Posted: 28 Jun 2018 10:30 AM PDT I see there are a couple updated versions out now and wanted to see what people felt/experienced with their choice for mesh routers. I'm looking to buy one soon and could use the feedback. **Adding onto the post because im a dumb dumb and should have provided some more details. I run a plex server that supports about 12-15 users, i do download a decent amount of torrents and share them, and lastly, the main reason I'm trying to go another route on routers is because my Arlo Pro basestation and my current Netgear X4S has to constantly reset. The Arlo base station is causing congestion/drops. I was thinking mesh would be better to clear the frequencies up a bit for my Arlo base to run wild. I'm so close to dumping these cameras because since day 1 my network has suffered. Currently i am using FIOS gigabit as well. [link] [comments] |
How do you secure your home network? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:45 PM PDT I'm curious how everyone secures their home network, this is what I've done so far.
I thought about blocking outbound WAN traffic for the IoT VLAN and Sonos VLAN using a Bind+RPZ, and port restrictions, but that seems really cumbersome to pull together the port lists for each device and also the DNS address list. I probably could turn on firewall logging and create a Bind9 server for a period of time automate this. [link] [comments] |
Questions building a basic home network Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:45 AM PDT First off I'll start with the issue that it causing me to fix the wifi. I live in a house that is 3800 sqft. Our ISP is spectrum and we have the modem that you rent from them. The service we have is capable of 200mbs. Long story short the modem is downstairs and there is a huge drop off in mbs upstairs and I would like fast wifi throughout the house. I have looked into a modem on the list spectrum allows which is the Netgear Cm600. The router I have looked into is the TP-Link Archer C7. Can answer all questions the best I can, but would like some help figuring this out! Thanks Edit: I'm looking more towards no wiring due to circumstances limiting that option. I appreciate all the help I have received!! [link] [comments] |
Xfinity gigabit internet: use Netgear C7800 or Linksys wrt1900acs? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 07:46 PM PDT So I reupped with Xfinity because they offered me a new promotion that includes gigabit speeds which is a upgrade from the 250Mbps I had. I bridged the docsis 3.0 modem they included (free modem rental) so I could buy and use a Linksys wrt1900acs which offered superior speeds and connection strength for my apartment. This was 2 years ago and we all know how fast tech advances. Anyways I got notice that Xfinity is sending me a Netgear C7800 docsis 3.1 mOdem gateway to replace my current docsis 3.0 In order to utilize the full gigabit speed. Again this will also be a free rental for the term of the contract. I'm looking at the specs and it seems on par or even better then my 2 year old Linksys wrt1900acs but then again this IS a Xfinity backed device so not sure how effective it is. Does anyone have experience with Xfinitys new modem? Should I bridge it and continue using my Linksys or eliminate it and have 1 less device on my table? [link] [comments] |
Use My Own Router with ATT Gigapower Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:08 PM PDT Hello /r/HomeNetworking! I'm moving into a location where I can get ATT Gigapower internet. From everything I've read, and all my experience with other ISP, the provided networking hardware sucks. I currently have an edgerouter 4 and several uap-ac-pros and was wondering if it were possible to use my edgerouter with ATT's service? I've read conflicting forums that describe how to do this. Anyone have recent experience that can lead me to helpful resources? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Tips on planing a new house already thinking of setting up a central networking room Posted: 28 Jun 2018 06:41 PM PDT For the past couple years I've been saving up some money in order to build my own house from scratch. I'm interested in build a loft for myself only, and since lofts aren't exactly known for the abundance of walls, I really wanted to plan ahead. I want my loft to be totally wired since, in the future I plan to invest in smart home devices and build a NAS as well. Does someone here have experience with setting something like this? It can be for small businesses or your own home, like me. I just want to share experiences so that I can make the least mistakes possible, cause I'm a little short on money. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jun 2018 06:06 PM PDT Hi, I'm new to home networking and have what might be a newbie question. I just installed AdvancedTomato on my TM-AC1900 (after flashing it to RT-68U) and was curious about the real-time IP traffic monitoring. I only have one device connected to the router and had no other internet activity other than streaming a video. I thought the choppy shape of the graph was unusual. https://imgur.com/U5g1ofS As you can see from the picture, the ip traffic seems to drop to zero or near zero every 2 seconds. Is this normal, or is this a sign that something is wrong with part of my network? Btw, I'm on xfinity cable and speedtests show around 95 mbps down and the video does not pause to buffer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Need help with some product terminology Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:04 PM PDT Hey everyone, I'm going to be setting up a new network from the ground up in my home, and have decided to move up from the standard router/gateway combo. I'm somewhat familiar with many of the device types -- I know the general purpose of a router, I know what a managed vs unmanaged switch is, etc., however when looking at some of the products from companies like Ubiquiti, I'm seeing all sorts of new terms I'm not familiar with and unable to find clear definitions for. For instance, I'm not sure what the difference between an "edge router" and "edge switch" is other than the obvious router vs switch bit. What's the "edge" bit about? How does an edge switch differ from a managed/smart switch? What about "core" vs "edge" routers/switches? My current loose plan is to have a network that's setup something like: internet -> edge router -> (edge|managed)? switch -> patch panel -> rooms/WAPs I think an edge switch will work, but again, I'm not clear on what exactly the term means in this context vs a managed switch, and my worry is that it might not like being used as a managed switch if it differs greatly. So, all that said, could anyone provide some clarity here as to what these devices add over their non-edgy counterparts? [link] [comments] |
Switch is getting 2x the speed of my router Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:20 PM PDT Is this normal? I was hardwired from ethernet to router and getting around 50mbps and when i moved over to the switch that jumped to 98 consistently. [link] [comments] |
Just moved into an apartment and need a router Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:07 PM PDT So just a few days ago I moved into my own apartment with my girlfriend and the day after I got my gigabite internet setup from comcast and am renting a router from them currently. I am looking to get my own router and send theirs back and am looking for advice! I mainly PC game and just my secondary monitor to watch videos or live streams. My girlfriend might have hulu or Netflix up on the living room TV, so that's another device that might be running. I also do have multiple consoles in my gaming room that typically won't be running all at once. I'm likely only getting wired connections for my ps4 and PC, everything else will be wireless. Mostly that'll be my xbox, switch and then me and my girlfriends phone. Don't really have a budget, if it's too expensive for me, hey now I just moved in, I'll just keep an eye on it until a sale happens! Hopefully I described enough to get some help and if I need to list more please just ask! Thanks! Edit: I do want to make it clear I'm a huge gamer and want the most out of the wired and wireless internet I can get. I want the lowest ping and the best reaction internet I can get. Huge gamer and want the best out of my router. The one I'm borrowing from comcast gives me 50 down and up on wireless and 800ish down and 55 up wired [link] [comments] |
Ran out a thousand foot box of cat 6 in and around my thousand square foot house, now what? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:36 PM PDT Took the opportunity to put a bunch of Cat 6 in my new house as I was rewiring the electrical. I have a bit of knowledge on the subject but not much and would appreciate some advice on what to buy, management software and how to hook up properly. Emulate dual monitors on TeamViewer (server) Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:34 PM PDT Hi guys not sure if this is the best place to ask this... but I have a server that I want to emulate dual monitors on so when I TV into it, I can see both monitors on TV. I know about the HDMI dummy plug - but wouldn't that be only 1 Monitor? So do I need to buy an HDMI dummy plug and also a DVI dummy plug? This server is running Windows 7 btw, so the "Windows 10" trick won't work (I tried). [link] [comments] |
Archer A7 (C7) vs Netgear R6230 Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:20 PM PDT I am getting an apartment soon so I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive home network. I'm mostly concerned about AC performance because it's an apartment and the 2.4ghz band will be reserved as a backup for incompatible devices. Currently these routers are both on sale on amazon $56 for the netgear and $60 for the TP link. I understand the TP link has higher theoretical throughput but the netgear is a much newer router considering the A7 is basically a rebadged C7. Is there anything the netgear has that the archer doesn't (such as a faster cpu) that would make me want to choose the netgear? [link] [comments] |
Re-purposing spare ethernet ports as hub/switch Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:19 PM PDT I have a home email, web, and file server I built running Scientific Linux 7.5. The motherboard I used ( A1SRi-2558F ) has four ethernet ports, plus a dedicated IPMI port. One regular port is connected to my router, along with the IPMI port. All of the LAN ports are now occupied on my router, so I would like to figure out how to convert the three spare ports on the server to act like a hub or switch. I'm not sure how to do this, with iptables or bridge-utils or what? I've tried searching Google and I'm not getting anywhere. I'm a networking dummy, so if you could be as detailed as possible, I would be grateful! Thanks! The ports appear as: enp0s20f0, enp0s20f1, enp0s20f2, enp0s20f3. enp0s20f0 is the connection to my router, and I am using DHCP on my router. I want whatever I connect to the spare ports to appear on the same subnet as everything else, 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0. [link] [comments] |
Can you guys identify what kind of patch cable this is? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:04 PM PDT So I've recently discovered that my house has some species of patch cable hidden away in its walls. All behind blank faceplates about 8' high on the walls. I'd never know there was network cable in there if I hadn't opened one up trying to install a power outlet. I've also found a central box with 11x cables coming out of it so once I get the right RJ45 connectors on these I've got some tracking to do since I've only found 3x ends throughout the house. The text on the cables reads "BRAND-REX 1989 CM 24 AWG SHIELDED (UL) LISTED" The cable is definitely some kind of shielded Ethernet (Orange/Green/Blue/Brown/4x White variants) but the house was built in 1995 so I have no idea if the previous owner put this in after the fact or if the cable is some ancient variant of CAT3/CAT4/??? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:47 PM PDT Hello, I am very new to networking and recently bought this setup for my apartment: I have the USG plugged into the wall and right now that is plugged into my desktop. But when i try and plug the AP to the USG it doesnt turn on. Does this have to do with PoE affects? Thanks for any help [link] [comments] |
Help for setting up a network in my apartment. Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:45 PM PDT The setup for this apartment is not good for a home network at all. The internet is included with our rent (which means they get us the cheapest package possible, probably sharing it with our neighbors). To make matters worse, only one of the ethernet jacks is connected... in the bedroom in on the top level out of three. We lived with slow internet all of last year but hoping to improve it this year. I was thinking maybe string a 50 foot cable so that the router can be on the main level, which will help some, but I was wondering if anybody had some other tips that would help us out? I've thought about switches or range extenders but I'm not sure how much that would actually help. Obviously using cables as opposed to Wi-Fi would help but I'm not sure if that is a possibility for everybody. [link] [comments] |
ASUS RT-N66U - Max Download Stuck At 120Mbps Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:40 PM PDT I recently upgraded my internet to 500Mbps down and while I know I need a new modem to support the full 500, my current Arris SB6121 should get me CLOSE to 170-200...but I can't seem to get higher than 120. I'm running the latest stock ASUS firmware, have disabled QoS and rebooted several times. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Jun 2018 09:28 PM PDT You could call me a veteran and knowledgeable Windows user (a programmer with OS experience going back to the DOS days), but networking has never been my thing...so forgive the weird mix of ignorance. I'm trying to get a home-business office network working again. There's three computers: two new Win10 desktops, and one Win7. They're all wired up to a router with internet access. Both the Win10 machines have the same Microsoft account associated, with the same local account name and password. One of the Win10 and the Win7 computer had a common workgroup name. The other Win10 was brand new and had "WORKGROUP" as it's workgroup name. The network was working okay, right up until I foolishly decided to change the workgroup name of the new Win10 to match the other two. Then all hell broke loose and they stopped communicating properly. I can ping the IP of any of the computers from any other, but they're intermittently seeing each other in the network (in Windows)...and, again intermittently, when I go to access another computer I'll often get an error saying Windows couldn't find that computer name on the network. After a lot of fumbling around and banging my head on the desks, the computers are acting randomly. At one point I had them working with each other, but in the middle of testing the network with an Access file, they randomly stopped talking. Sometimes one Win10 machine will see all three computers on the network, but it's always the case that the other Win10 machine won't see anything but the Win7 machine. And sometimes it won't let me open even that. Sometimes none of the computers see each other. But, it's always the case that the Win10 machines won't mutually see each other. There had been some consistency from the Win7 machine flawlessly seeing and accessing the two Win10 machines, but now that's dead in the water, too. I should emphasize that these changes are seemingly random and don't correlate to me fiddling with settings (although I'm probably to blame anyway). The only correlation I can see is that these changes seem to happen consistently with reboots and the order that I boot up the computers. Does anyone have an idea of what the heck is going on here? Between the two Win10 computers, it almost felt like one would register all the computers on the network and that would somehow keep the other machine from being able to see or interact with the other two. Is there possibly a guide out there that will tell me how to bring all three computers back to an "unnetworked" state, then show me how to properly set this thing up from scratch? I'm almost embarrassed I can't get this simple Windows network to work right. Update 1: I followed instructions in the link provided by TheEthyr. Function Discovery Provider Host was enabled on both Win10 machines, but Function Discovery Resource Publication was not enabled. I set both of those services to Automatic (delayed start). After a couple reboots, all the computers seem to reliably show up in explorer. The only problem is I still get the error "Windows cannot access \\THATCOMPUTER" when I double click on the other Win10 machine in explorer...but not all the time. Every now and then, I can get into the other machine, but it'll randomly say I can't access it again. I'll literally wait a half hour without doing anything and suddenly not be able to get in. For what it's worth, I tried to add a Windows credential for the other machine, but that didn't make anything any more reliable. The only thing that worked for was the Win7 machine. The Win7 machine, at the moment, is reliably showing everything on the network and can access all computers. [link] [comments] |
[Help} PlayStation and Phone connection issues Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:13 PM PDT So currently we have around 21 devices connected to the router, which 4 of them happen to be PS4's. One of the kids PlayStation's loves to fail to connect to the internet. When it's not doing that it loves to not connect to PSN's server, however the other PS4's connect just fine. My phone also as of late randomly disconnects and reconnects to the WiFi. I have tried many different things with my routers settings and the PlayStation. I even decided to try to forward ports on that PS4's IP and I went ahead and changed the DNS to Cloudflare and Google. I tried switching the band to 5GHz since most of everything is on 2.4GHz and alas the PlayStation is still not consistent. I should throw in that it does connect, it's just not consistent, it also doesn't like to be in a party chat and a game at the same time. Any help or suggestions would be great! The router specified is a ASUS RT-AC68R Modem: ARIS TM822 with a 8x4 channel. I also have the list of devices on the network if needed. And can provide Router settings. I also posted this in r/homelab EDIT: I also tried connecting it to the 5ghz band and nothing will connect to the 5ghz band only to the 2.4. It always says check the security settings. Access point that looks good sitting on a shelf or desk Posted: 28 Jun 2018 07:26 AM PDT I have an edgerouter x as my home router and am looking to add an access point to my set-up. Normally I understand the unifi ap-ac lite would be the default recommendation, but I'm looking for something that doesn't look out of place sitting on a desk or a shelf. The unifi APs look unfinished if they're just left sitting out, like the installer was too lazy to mount it on the wall or ceiling. Is there another option around the same price and performance as the ap-ac lite? [link] [comments] |
Help with moving Xfinity WiFi? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:57 PM PDT Hello!

Internet frequently cuts out for ~30 seconds then comes back on its own Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:37 PM PDT I've been dealing with this problem for 2+ years and haven't been able to come up with a fix, so would appreciate any help. My problem is that my internet will randomly cut out for about 30 seconds, during which time I have no internet access, and then without me doing anything, the internet will come back. When it is working, I'm able to get 80 Mbps + consistently. Every time the internet goes down, I notice that my WiFi signal indicator on my iPhone or iPad will go from 3 "bars" to 2 (it never goes to 1). I have Comcast Xfinity, and have worked through their troubleshooting process, including having a tech come out and measure signal strength at the coax into the modem, run speeds tests, etc. Of course when he was here, it worked perfectly. I also measured the signal strength against the guidelines here (www.dslreports.com/faq/comcast) and I was in spec for everything. My set-up is as follows: Coax -> Arris Surfboard SB6141 (modem) -> ASUS RT-N66U (router) -> D-Link DGS-108 (switch) -> Netgear WNR-2000 (access point) The router is the main wifi network, and the access point is in a part of the house that gets poor wifi signal. This problem pre-dates adding the switch + access point, which I added thinking that the wifi signal may be the issue. It is not; I can sit next to the access point or router and still have this problem. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Hard drives connected to routers USB ports, through a hub? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:28 PM PDT I asked this on /networking and was referred here. My router (Netgear NightHawk AC2300) has two USB ports. I have two USB external hard drives, could I connect both, through a USB hub, to the USB-2 port on the back of the router, would that actually work? These drives are powered by their own bricks btw. Posted: 28 Jun 2018 10:42 AM PDT Hey, we just switched internet providers and finished with the on site installation. The new modem is up and running but when connected to the Nighthawk router we have, no internet connections can be found. (I'm hardwired to my desktop at the moment with no connection). I opened up the Netgear genie software to see what the problem was but it's seems to be way over my head. Anyone think they might be able to walk me through this??? [link] [comments] |
