A few questions about fiddling with the insides of laptops. Posted: 04 May 2018 07:50 AM PDT 1) Do you add RAM by just popping it into the free slots on the motherboard and reactivating Windows? No praying to God that the system will boot, that the extra ram will be recognized or that it will run in Dual Channel? 2) Do I need anything other than a SATA cable and screws if I want to add a SATA HDD or SSD? 3) Can I repaste by just doing what I'd do in a desktop? Like, make a little ball of thermal paste in the center of the CPU and GPU and just close the laptop (after cleaning the old paste of course). [link] [comments]

student/gamer Wondering what laptops right for me? Posted: 04 May 2018 01:43 PM PDT Let me first start off with my current laptop, The Dell Precision 7510 i7-6820hq and Nvidia Quadro m1000m, I hate. Its heavy big bulky and just enough graphical power to piss me off. The CPU is strong but is getting old, and I've used 400gb out of the 1tb it has for storage. I'm a college student by day and a gamer by night. My dream laptop would be a super thin ultrabook with fingerprint sensor 7 hour + battery life and a 1050 ti. IM NOT LOOKING TO ONLY GAME ON THIS LAPTOP! I have a desktop with a 1080ti and 6 core i7 that I play AAA games on 90% of the time. This laptop will be mainly for college typing notes in class and watch videos, the games i play are Squad, PUBG, GTA 5, Hitman 2017 and Escape from Tarkov. The gaming aspect comes in if I go back home which is 4 hours away and want to play games. My main concerns in a laptop are portability, weight, battery life, thinness, and graphics power, a fingerprint sensor in that order. The laptops I'm looking at is the Razer blade 2017 i7 7700 HQ and GTX 1060, and the Asus Zenbook 13 ux331un. I don't care about screen size as long as its 12" +, nor do I care about resolution as long as its around 1080p or higher. Thanks for reading my super long post any help/advice/insights are appreciated! Question about lenovo legion y520 battery life Posted: 04 May 2018 10:10 AM PDT To all Y520 owners, I know the laptop typically lasts 4-5 hours unplugged, so how much longer does it last when you put it to Nvidia Optimus? Is it a substantial increase? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2018 10:06 AM PDT So, I'm considering stepping into the Gigabyte world with the new Aero 15X, although does anybody know when the release date for the 4K model is going to be released? This website Says that it is "coming soon". So does that mean the 4K model laptop is unreleased and if so when will it be released? If it is already released and this is just an issue with the website can somebody tell me where I can view and purchase the 4K model? Thanks a ton. [link] [comments]
Hey I need buying help on the HP Pavillon 15, is it any good for my purpose? Posted: 04 May 2018 08:54 AM PDT Hey guys I'm looking at the HP Pavillon 15-ck070nz with (i7 i7-8550U, NVIDIA GeForce 940MX (2GB GDDR5), 16GB RAM(2133 MHz) DDR4-SDRAM (2 x 8 GB) and 256GB SSD. I work with a lot of tabs and softwares open so I need the Ram. I also have to use it for graphic design. There I don't know. Is the display and graphic card enough for graphic design, mostly Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and InDesign? [link] [comments]
Planning on refurbishing my sisters old laptop, any advice? Posted: 04 May 2018 08:52 AM PDT I need a laptop and my sister has an old one she doesn't use. I have a usb drive with a new operating system that I plan to use after I wipe the hard drive. Hardware should be good. It was just slow because of all the extra stuff she put on it. anyone have experience in doing this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2018 08:24 AM PDT Hi, I need recommendations for a laptop that I can use for gaming titles-rainbow 6 seige, overwatch, wargame, pubg and that's decently mobile under 17" screen. I am in nursing school and also need to use it for school, battery life isn't that important, but can't use a desktop because my job is mobile. I tried origin pc and they're customer service and replacement parts. Trying to stay around $2k -2300$. If you could give me like 3 recommendations that would be great! [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2018 07:07 AM PDT Hi, I am relatively unfamiliar with laptops, but have been searching for a decent one under £550. I've been trying to look for 8gb/ i5/ full HD screen but understand those specs are probably a bit over budget. Does anyone have any suggestions of decent laptops for under £550? I would be very grateful! [link] [comments]
I don't see what's wrong with the trackpad being to the side of the keyboard. Posted: 04 May 2018 07:06 AM PDT When you type both hands are on the keyboard, and with a desktop your mouse is not bellow your keyboard like it is with laptop trackpads & keyboards. [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 May 2018 06:31 AM PDT Hello was looking to buy a laptop but am fairly clueless about the laptop and its market etc so was looking for suggestions. I am kind of familar with building PCs, specs etc but need a laptop for university and gaming (not extremely high end 60fps gaming though, something that can get the job done) and editing jobs (again not too high end). My budget is around $1000 so if anyone had any recommendations please let me know [link] [comments]
Upgrading an MSI GS65 wifi card? Posted: 03 May 2018 11:53 PM PDT Hi all, I just got my new laptop (the MSI GS65VR-050) a few days ago, and am loving it. Coming from a MacBook Pro, I'm able to enjoy more games at higher FPS just a few days in! (It doesn't replace my main desktop, of course, but it gets the job done.) I've run into a bit of a snag, however: my room is the farthest point from the location of the router in our house, and the wifi card in the GS65 (in my model it's the Intel AC-9560) has very low signal quality in my room. fast.com is marking me at about 1.2 MB/s on 2.5 and 5GHz, while closer to the router is a markedly improved 65 MB/s. From the same location in my room, my MacBook Pro was easily getting 50 MB/s. My question is, what PCIe card can I replace the 9560 with that would allow me a stronger signal when further away from the router? I'm rather surprised and a tad disappointed that a laptop of this high-spec is having issues like this. Thank you! As a side note, for comparison, I have an ASUS PCE-AC68 AC1900 in my desktop and have no issues with WiFi connection from that computer in my room. [link] [comments]

Keep Aero 15X order or cancel for GS65 Posted: 04 May 2018 12:13 AM PDT I ordered the Gigabyte Aero 15X from Xoticpc on the 13th and they said they're waiting for the promotional items to arrive before they're allowed to start working on it. Something I think is rediculous, but they assured me that they have to wait before they can do anything with the machine. They also have zero ETA on them arriving. My question is, should I just wait on my order for who knows how long, or buy the MSI GS65 from Gentech? I'd like to stick to xoticpc, but the GS65 is so expensive there. Also, how are the LM repastings from gentech? I feel like a lot of the LM repaste jobs from these websites aren't really all that good based off of what I've seen... I know no one can really answer this since the GS65 isn't out yet, but I'd love to hear some opinions. Thanks guys [link] [comments]
Old laptop suitable for media center/browsing. Posted: 04 May 2018 03:00 AM PDT Hello r/laptops I'm in the market for a used laptop with the basic aim of being able to play media files and music / youtube on my 60'' inch tv and browsing the internet outside on a sunny day or around the house , I have a usb external sound card already from my old media center so sound doesn't have to be amazing on the laptop and I already have a ssd for faster storage, I'm basically looking for something around $250 usd second hand off ebay the only prerequisite that I have is that the laptop isn't prone to overheating and is of decent build quality. So what laptops from yesteryear would be decent for what I require? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Question regarding 2 different Acers Posted: 03 May 2018 08:44 PM PDT I'm in the market for a new laptop and have been browsing around for a while trying to decide what to get. I constantly see the Acer Aspire 5 recommended and to be honest it has all the specs I'm looking for (8th gen i5, MX150, and an SSD) at my price range. I would have bought it by now but I really don't like the thick plastic bezels it has. [link] [comments] |
