How to add Ubuntu 18.04 to Hyper-V?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 09:47 AM PDT

    Hello all.

I have turned on Hyper-V to make my main machine a Type 1 Hypervisor while running Windows 10 Pro with 1803 update as a guest... in hopes that the much anticipated/talked about Ubuntu 18.04 support would be available. However, 4 days later and I am still not seeing the quick create option to choose Ubuntu 18.04.

There are tutorials on getting Ubuntu 16.04 to work. I am not, however sure if I use the ISO image of Ubuntu 18.04 if it will pick up the enhanced capabilities that Hyper-V and build 1803 introduce.. e.g. better mouse/gpu support, drive redirection, etc. As I understand it, each guest OS in a type 1 hypervisor will run as if it is on bare metal.. nearly as fast as if the hypervisor wasnt managing it. Is that the case or am I missing what a type 1 hypervisor does for guest OSs?

Anyway, I just want to get Ubuntu 18.04 running already, but assumed since all the hoopla around it was with regards to using the quick create gallery, that possibly I had to wait for it to be released there before it would pick up the extra enhanced features... or if the ISO includes it and it will work just as well?

System Audio changes sides. (Left becomes Right, Right becomes Left)

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:54 PM PDT

So I am finding randomly while doing tasks or gaming, my audio flips sides. My left ear cup on my headset becomes my right audio, and vice versa.

I have my Astro headset plugged into my Blue Yeti (Black Out Edition) into the playback port. So this uses the Blue Yeti's onboard audio chip for my playback device in Windows 10.

Now, I'll notice this happen in a game like Fortnite or Counter Strike specifically, as they are games where knowing where sounds came from is important for further success in the match.

To give you an example in game, I could be playing Counter Strike. The bug has happened or just happened, I am hearing audio out of my left ear cup and position my self for the engagement on the right side of where ever I am. Only to find out they came from the left side, which I was unaware of because my audio had switched sides.

It seems the only quick and temp fix has been unplugging my Blue Yeti from my computer and plugging it back in. This fix may hold for anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours.

Just wondering if anyone has had this issue or knows of anywhere online to help address the bug. I've tried looking around but I dont seem to find my specific issue.

    TL;DR:

Left Ear Cup Audio becomes Right Ear Cup Audio (and vice versa) on a system level. Anyone know a perm fix?

Rear Panel Headphone jack volume issue

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:25 PM PDT

So my front panel is constantly causing a buzzing noise in my headphones, so I decided to switch to the back panel, the buzzing noise stopped however, the volume is extremely low, no matter how high I set the volume up in windos or on my headphones, its always really low.

I googled some fixes for this, one of them was to change the the input from Speakers to Headphones in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, while it worked for alot of people it hasnt for me.

Does anyone know why this fix isnt working? and/or if there is a better/different one.l

Swapping out just a motherboard in a build, how do I clean install/transfer product key properly?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 10:33 AM PDT

I have a custom build that I plan to swap out my old motherboard for a new one - I'll probably need to clean install and also transfer my product key.

How would I go about doing both? For reference I have a Windows 10 Education OS that I got for free from my university.

Would it be possible to clean install whilst keeping apps/data/files? Do I have to contact support to transfer my key? I came across this article that says I can go into cmd prompt and uninstall the product key that way.

My (bad) experience upgrading from Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB to Current Branch Build 1803

    Posted: 03 May 2018 04:08 PM PDT

I've been using Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB since it's launch, 2 years ago. We all know Microsoft says this version is not for the "casual user" (aka, if a machine have Office, Photoshop, Steam or any other "common software" installed, LTSB isn't for you). Instead, they say it is aimed at "critical" systems like PoS, ATM, machines inside an Operational Technology (OT) network etc.

There I was, happy with my 2-year old system without a single issue (no BSOD, no freeze, nothing). Updates were fast and smooth, after all they were only security or bug-fix updates, no new features are installed on LTSB as you guys know. Then, Microsoft launched Build 1803. I read about the new features and only those caught my eyes, in order:

    1. OneDrive Files On-Demand
    2. Ability to untick "show app list in Start menu" - this way only the system icons and pinned apps appears. Making the Start menu thinner/smaller
    3. More Microsoft's "Fluent Design" elements, like the hover effect, new "texture" for the Start menu and taskbar etc.

Basically, that's it. From the 100+ new features I just wanted 3, all the rest was garbage for me. Out of those three, the one I REALLY needed was OneDrive Files On-Demand, as I could live without the other two for a little more.

I checked and my backup was OK, so I proceeded to do an in-place upgrade from Enterprise 2016 LTSB to Current Branch Build 1803. The upgrade went OK and after some time my computer restarted into the all new CB Build 1803. I got the amazing OneDrive Files On-Demand and the other features I needed, and of course some 100+ other features I didn't give a f***.

Then, I immediately faced some issues that I shouldn't find in a "final" product and I remembered WHY I used LTSB:

    • Bunch of trash software pre-installed by Microsoft
    • Since 1709 the "Default apps > Select defaults by app" sent you to a TRASH window where you had to choose the formats one by one. You had to rely on some alternative terminal commands to open the old "default by apps" window
    • On 1803 Microsoft did us the favor of entirely removing the option to access the old window, now you are stuck with the ridiculously dumb "default by apps" window. Not only that, the "Default apps > Select defaults by app" is broken. It's a known bug. I tried the fix, but it didn't work for me.
    • I gave a change to the default Mail app, and it is also broken. I configured one Outlook, one Gmail and one iCloud, but only Outlook account is showing. There is a dirty workaround for this, which didn't work, again.
    • MKV files lost their thumbnails, again a known bug.
    • The "OEM Partition" is not hidden anymore as it gets a letter addressed to it (known bug, what a surprise...). At least this one I could fix.

This is kinda ridiculous, having to deal with this kind of thing in a "final" product is depressing. I'm still using the obnoxious Build 1803, but I can't stop thinking about going back to LTSB as it's just a single backup away.

My only real concern is what will happen to LTSB in 2019 (the year Microsoft is supposed to release the new version): will Microsoft put all those BS features into the new LTSB or just the essential ones? What if Microsoft decides to completely remove some "production" features from LTSB, because as we know, it's not really intended for "casual use".

What do you guys think? Anyone here who did the same, LTSB -> CB 1803? Clock is ticking... depending on the replies I might revert back to LTSB in a snap, rsrsrs.

Xbox one controller as mouse and keyboard

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:46 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have Xbox one controller and wireless adapter for it. I am searching for a way to control windows with it, like the mouse and keyboard.

I have searched and the only solution I have found is steam / steam controller or third party software.

So what I am wondering is has windows facilitated this type of function or the above solutions the only way to go?

Trouble with renaming folders and creating them too

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:30 PM PDT

I can actually create and rename folders and files, the issue is that I have to leave the current directory and come back to see the change. I right click in windows explorer, create new folder, nothing appears. I hit the back button, then the forward button and bam there's my New Folder. I right click and select rename and type ind Jargon and its still called "New Folder". Well I go back and go forward again and bam its now called Jargon. same thing with cutting and pasting files and folders and dragging them into other folders. What gives? Is this some dumb setting i accidentally turned on/off? I have the latest Windows 10 updates. Thanks for the help

What's up with my 60+ parents and malware?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 12:22 AM PDT

Let me give you the rundown: My mother has gotten hit with ransomware that required a reformat of her hard drive - since she didn't know how to reformat her hard drive, she just bought a new computer. My father had a software problem, took it to a repair shop, they did a reformat - the same day he gets it home, he gets hit with malware as well.

Now, I use Mac for software development, Windows for gaming, but I don't have nearly the same types of troubles my parents have with malware and the like trying to get onto the system. What's going on? Why are my parents - who are just doing basic web browsing and the like - getting hit so often when I'm using my Windows computer a lot more and not having these problems.

I have a working theory -- don't laugh -- but my parents tend to be conservative Republicans, and I'm thinking that maybe malware tries to get on via the conservative websites they visit, and I don't. But other than that theory, I have no clue - they're not heading to crazy parts of the internet. I'm pretty sure they don't even know HOW to get to the crazy parts of the internet. And shouldn't Windows Defender be picking up these threats?

I've also really trying to get them to switch to Mac. Not that macs are in any way better for what they're doing (and lord knows they're expensive) but they don't have quite the same malware problems or penetration. I don't think they get that the damage that malware can do to a person goes beyond "It can ruin your $600 computer" to "It can drain your bank account if you get hit with a keylogger."

I'm going to TRY to get mom and dad to switch to Linux OR to buy Mac when I next visit -- but that'll likely fail, they're stubborn. If you can maybe help me figure out the root cause of why they're getting attacked so often, though, I might be able to harden their Windows install a little bit.

    Windows 10 Update freezes

    Posted: 03 May 2018 08:20 AM PDT

Downloading works fine, but when I'm going to restart Windows to update, it works until 33%, then it crashes, after cold restart it continues until 54% and after another restart it continues until 82%. After the next restart it says the last Version is restored, because a Windows update failed. The Percentages are Everytime the same. After Windows is on the older Version, it says in the Update-History that something failed. Right now there are ~30 failed attempts. I already reinstalled Windows, uninstalled every Update and tried again, but the results are always the same. I don't know any further. The PC works fine, Photo- / Video editing, Gaming etc., everything runs fine.

The PC is an ASUS Prebuild, I don't know the Name, but I'll post it in the comments when I got it.

Looking for some help with windows 8 media creation tool

    Posted: 03 May 2018 12:45 PM PDT

Simply put windows 8.1 media creation tool doesn't work I consistently get the error message Download did not complete successfully The download task did not complete The parameter is incorrect

I've gone into Microsoft files looking for the web setup folder to delete but it doesn't exist as this was one of the suggested fixes. I've downloaded the tool fresh across multiple computers but the same error messsge occurs weather I opt to create a iso file or boot drive. Interestingly enough the windows ten media creation works just fine) but that doesn't do me any good as I'm trying to xfer my copy of Windows 8 to a new motherboard . "To my knowledge as long as you deactivate your windows 8 key there shouldn't be any issues using the same key on a new fresh install of Windows. Still though this is a major hiccup making me wonder is it just Microsoft's tool that's broken.

    Triple monitor set up

    Posted: 03 May 2018 12:44 PM PDT

    Evening All,

I'm looking to set-up a triple monitor. Currently there are two monitors the same model and a third a different model and resolution. This should be solved by Tuesday or Wednesday as I've purchased a new one.

I'm wondering whether anyone can give me insights or links to useful articles that look deeper then just background optimisation.

Windows 10, I've read doesn't like more then one monitor in terms of a lot of features were written out.

    Wondering whether Reddit can help?

    Thank you

But if i would close a window or minimize it, or even just get a message on steam or discord, it will pop up even tho i haven't told it to. Is there any way to fix this? Also i'm using Windows 10.
