Router User Interface (UI) Emulators Posted: 03 May 2018 10:05 AM PDT A SNBForums member has helpfully compiled and maintains a very useful list of router user interface emulators. They can be very handy when shopping for a new router to find out if your router supports X, where X can be either non-existent in product descriptions, datasheets or very hard to find information about for that specific device. This is especially the case for new routers and unlike user videos, they can be kept up to date with new features. For example here are some well-known router models and UIs:
And lesser known ones that illustrate there's a lot more out there than you may realize:

What modem should I get? I have Cable One's "Gamer and Streamer" plan (200 Mbps) Posted: 03 May 2018 08:28 PM PDT Which one of their approved modems should I get for my speed? Also, what router would you guys recommend? It is me and a roommate and we usually have like 6 or more devices using the internet at the same time. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Whole house loses internet when my desktop's ethernet is detected on startup/reboot? Posted: 03 May 2018 07:51 PM PDT Here's a fun one for you: Whenever my desktop PC either starts up or reboots, the router instantly disables the internet for our entire house, and it only refreshes when I power cycle the router. The setup in our house is that my desktop, another desktop, and two gaming consoles are all plugged in via ethernet to the Netgear R6700v2 router, which is connected directly to the cable modem. Things I have tried: What in the world would cause this to happen? If anyone can figure this one out you deserve a commendation to say the least. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 07:40 PM PDT Please excuse me if my English is not so clear, its not my main language. I want to have some devices connected to the internet so that they can be controlled remotely, the first solution would be to use a dynamic dns client + port forwarding on a home router. But the tricky part is to do it with a tethered connection from an android phone, how would you go about to solve this problem? Is there a service that could do something like the following: https://imgur.com/C5MuBsx. I have a travel router that supports openwrt and openvpn if thats of any help. I'm not asking to solve this task for me im asking for advice on how to go about it. Thanks for your time! [link] [comments] |
Wifi networking in the mancave Posted: 03 May 2018 06:34 PM PDT Hi guys I recently moved to my girlfriend's house and I'm lucky cause we decided to build a mancave in the basement. But I got some networking problems, mainly because it's too slow. I use to use Ethernet for my networking applications in my previous places, and everything was always fine. But now, I can't, and the mancave might be a bit far away from the router. Here's the actual setup : - In the office room : Asus RT-N54 router and my PC wired to it. - in the mancave (at the exact opposite of the house and one level down) : chromecast (first one). I have an Airport Express for listening music in the mancave but it's too slow. Also the Chromecast is slow too. Vids take a while to go HD and Plex is slow too. Movies and show take a while to fully load, even in 720p. So what are my options here ? A. Buying a more powerful router B. Buying a chromecast 2. I heard it's faster than the first one. C. Buying a wifi extender and put it in the middle of the house D. Buying a Mesh Wifi system. I like the idea but these little guys are really too expensive. I would have a feeling for B. But it doesn't help for Airport Express :/ So, any ideas from you guys ? [link] [comments] |
How to make multiple routers appear to be on same network Posted: 03 May 2018 04:58 PM PDT I've got an unusual home network setup which consists of 1 modem and 2 routers (you can see it in the network diagram). Network Diagram: I have a D-Link DIR880L (1) which acts as the modem and feeds one of its network ports to a Linksys WRT1900ACS (2), the Linksys unit is responsible for the 2.4Ghz WIFI network which connects all of the devices on the top floor. The WRT1900ACS feeds one of its ports to Linksys WRT1900AC (3) which sits on another floor and is responsible for the 5Ghz WIFI network. This sits next to the TV/consoles/PC which is wired to the router. Recently my partner and I have started playing coop games on in the lounge room. My partner plays on the TV which is connected to a PC. I've been using steam in home streaming to stream my PC (4), which sits on another floor, to my surface pro (5) in the lounge room. As you can imagine the quality is pretty poor. I'd like to be able to connect my surface (5) to the 5Ghz network (3) and still use the steam in home streaming service - however this service only seems to work when both PCs are connected to the same router (i.e. both connected to 2.4Ghz WIFI) - Windows file sharing also appears to stop working when the computers are not connected to the same router. Any ideas on how I can make it seem like the 2 routers are part of the same network? Edit: The reason of my wierd network is due to wifi not working on the DIR880L, too many devices were connected to the WRT1900AC - leading to constant dropouts. With the current setup i have no dropouts or speed issues. [link] [comments] |
Is there any way I can put my PC to high priority on my network? Posted: 03 May 2018 04:54 PM PDT My internet isn't fast, and also has a bad bandwidth. Unfortunately, this is the best internet package I can get where I live. (My internet speed average is 2.77 Mbps down and 0.55 Mbps up.) My main concern is when I'm playing an online game, as soon as someone loads Netflix or a YouTube video my connection gets destroyed and I inevitably get kicked from the game. Is there any way I can throttle all other devices or set mine to a priority? I've heard of QOS and have read quite a bit, but I just don't know where to start or what to do. I'm using Ethernet and my router is a Westell A90-750045-07. My connection is also Frontier. Any feedback is appreciated, Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 04:31 PM PDT My landlord got one of those cheap modem-routers ISP's deliver, it frequently maxes out it's RAM and CPU and seems like the wifi just disappears sometimes. Frequent high-pings directly to his router (over wifi). Right now I got my own router connected to his with a LAN cable, the high pings disappeared when I tested it so it's a rough assumption that it might be his router being too far away or the antennas not keeping up with the amount of devices connected to his router (15+ devices, phones, computers, rpi's, media clients etc.) So how do I optimally connect and configure my router to his? I hoped at least my router could be offloading his. Do I disable DHCP on my router or do I configure both routers not to overlap IP's. I heard there's a possibility to connect another cheap modem-router into bridge mode and then connect both routers to that one without much difficulties (no double NAT) which I eventually will try but can't do at the moment. Can't switch the routers around either. I'm not very experienced at networking so any help would be appreciated and I hope nobody will be too mad if something I say is wrong. Thanks! Improving network security of current setup Posted: 03 May 2018 09:56 AM PDT I have a decently-sized home network that I'd like to improve the security of, especially now that I'm adding more and more IoT devices. I'd really appreciate any advice on setup as well as anything you think I'm missing. REQUIREMENTS I'm particularly concerned about a simple vulnerability in one of the devices being used to access other devices on the network, as well as the usual external threats. In addition, I want to ensure that only authorized devices are allowed on the non-guest parts of the network, so MAC address filtering at a minimum is important (I'd prefer RADIUS for more sensitive VLANs and yes, I understand RADIUS is usually for users, not devices). I'd like to minimize the amount of information my ISP picks up and so ideally I'd prefer to use HTTPS wherever possible (or, better, connect through a VPN) but I also play a lot of online games where milliseconds matter, so added lag means I can't always force this. I'd like the more secure VLANs to use "proper" (and yet slow) recursive DNS lookups with local caching on the router but the rest of them can just forward the queries to 8.8.8.8 or whatever (I'd prefer to avoid my ISPs DNS server) PLAN My current plan is to create a VLAN for all of my IoT things, a VLAN for my kids, one for guests, one for my wife and I and then one that only allows traffic to flow over a site to site VPN (I use this last one for work since I need to access a bunch of remote servers behind the corporate firewall). I want to run Snort, although I've not used it in many years. I'd prefer actionable advice like someone is trying to connect to an internal wifi access point with an unauthorized MAC, or there have been more than X attempts to connect to a particular port from a specific ip etc. At the same time, I want to avoid spammy alerts that will get ignored quickly. A solid firewall is important, especially for access to the IoT stuff. I want to be able to see logs clearly from individual devices if I need to dig into things. It would be good to see graphs of network usage per device and per-VLAN and generally be able to monitor the status of the network and add/remove devices when appropriate. Ideally this could be through graphana or a similar tool. EQUIPMENT Netowrking stuff: * pfSense router from netgate * 24 port unifi managed switch * 2x unifi AP Pro (I have a 3rd unused) * Unifi cloud key Devices: * 1x Ring Elite PoE video doorbell (with 2x chimes) * Seperate comcast security system with cameras (unrelated network) * 6x various Sonos speakers (2.4 Ghz only) * 8x Amazon Echo plus 2x Echo show * 1x Gaming PC (needs hardwired connection) * 2x Ps4 Pro * 2x Smart TVs * 3-4 laptops * 4 phones (iphone and android) * 4 tablets (all ipad) * couple of low-use servers * couple of wifi-enabled printers * (usually) my car in the garage * Planning on adding various other IoT devices like a nest, controllable light switches etc. I also want a NAS of some kind, ideally that can be streamed from the smart TVs (but I don't want the TV to be able to write to the NAS - should be read-only for that VLAN). The main issue that I worry about with all these VLANs is being able to appropriately manage them when I need to. A lot of the devices seem to want to exist on the same Wifi network as the phone or computer that set them up and some of them need to talk to each other (e.g. the Amazon Echo needs to be able to tell the smart TV to turn itself off, or stream music to the Sonos speaker) and I'm not sure if this is possible if they are isolated from one another. Ideally I'd prefer to lock down the IoT devices so that they can only talk to the internet, not each other - has anyone done this? If so, did it work well? Thanks for any advice you guys have! Cable modem not connecting online. Posted: 03 May 2018 02:59 PM PDT So as of 2 days ago, my wifi stopped working. I did a simple restart of the modem and router. Nothing. And at times the internet would go on. Then turn back off. All of my payments are up to date, and there are no outages on the area. If it helps, the modem is currently flashing downstream, then at times it would flash up stream. And that's the farthest it would go from there. I have comcast network. [link] [comments] |

Best setup for 4 person apartment? Posted: 03 May 2018 01:15 PM PDT Hi there, this fall I'm moving in with 3 other college guys and I'm looking for a good networking setup for all of us to have our personal devices (laptops, phones, etc) and smart home/entertainment devices (a Google home, Chromecast, Apple TV) along with a small media center computer I'm going to use for a local Plex server to keep some movies and music on. This is the first time I'm setting up my own network, I've heard good things about Ubiquiti gear, but I'm not exactly sure what router and modem I should get. This would be under a Cox 300mbps down, 30mbps up plan, not sure if that's related at all [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 May 2018 11:09 PM PDT Does anyone have a Ubiquiti network, if so how do you like it? I currently bought a USG, Switch 8, and AP-AC-LR. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 04:12 AM PDT I'm thinking about buying a new router to replace an older Belkin N150 that's started dropping connection every 20 minutes or so. The wireless is used for Roku streaming and my wife's tablet. For me a router doesn't need to be fancy, it just needs to work reliably and be trouble free. Emphasis on reliable as in I don't want to have to run downstairs to my man cave and have to power cycle the router every 20 minutes when I'm trying to watch HBO Go via Roku. Ideally, I'd like to keep this under $40 since we're poor. Here are the current candidates: $35 ARRIS SURFboard SBR-AC1750CE (new) $27 TP-Link ARCHER C1200 (refurbished) $30 Netgear AC1200 (R6220-100NAR) (refurbished) $34 Belkin AC1900 (new) The Arris Surfboard looks interesting but you can't network a wired printer to it, which would be nice, and who knows if it's any good. It's new and cheap, but is it cheap junk? The same question applies to that Belkin router (which you can network a wired printer to) but even more so and I hate their no light signals design. I'm not sure how the TP-Link and Netgear compare to one another though you can connect a printer to their USB ports. If they were new I don't think it would be an issue; you'd take either over the Belkin or the Arris. The thing about refurbished is that there's a reason why those items are refurbished such as dropping their wireless connections. For some reason I'm kind of smitten with the Arris Surfboard but wonder if it would be reliable. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 09:42 AM PDT Hi everyone! What is the best way to get access to your home network via VPN? Needs to be functioning on iOS. Raspberry Pi? macOS Server? Etc? What is my best option? Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 01:59 AM PDT Hi there, been trying to help my friend with his networking issues when researching the issue i came upon some questions myself.. long story short whenever we are in a game together he is kicked out or lags out one way or another.. we both have 50mbps+ connections so i'm sure the issue is networking. Regarding my questions I have an apple airport extreme router and i'm running an xbox one on my lan, i have set up a static ip and forwarded the necessary ports and put a dhcp reservation for my xbox... under the ipv6 section i have configure automatically ipv6 mode on native share ipv6 connection and block incoming ipv6 i'm assigned an ipv6 wan, default route and delegated prefix on my network. there's a slot for ipv6 lan address as well which isn't filled out automatically, what would go in this space? the default ipv6 gateway? does a user typically have to manually assign an ipv6 address for a device? can i make up whatever works? I have enable teredo tunnels and ipsec enabled as well.. From my understanding since my isp provides me with an prefix delegation can i just assume all the devices in my lan are receiving their own ipv6 address or are they all sharing the routers ipv6 address? the teredo tunnel thing is that redundant because i have a native ipv6 connection presently as well as ipv4? Is leaving this option on doing anything? since i have the option block incoming ipv6-- should i open the necessary ports for ipv6 as well? i've read that port forwarding isnt necessary in ipv6... On my friends network he's using a pace 5268AC as his router from att, we've tried to put his device in the DMZ which then disabled ipv6 connections... we then put him behind the dhcp server and then port forwarded the necessary xbox ports but it was still being weird with the ipv6 and he was still not connecting to very many people. finally we assigned a static ip outside the dhcp range and assigned the ports being forwarded to the same ip and it worked for a bit but still had issues i believe relate to ipv6... in ipv6 options he has static ipv6 slaac assigned to his xbox-- Should i look for a way to assign the network to dhcp for ipv6 as well? Any help would be appreciated as we both are scratching our heads about this issue... kudos [link] [comments] |
Are these stats good for VDSL? Is there a way to estimate the max speed I can get? Posted: 03 May 2018 09:12 AM PDT My ISP upgraded us from ADSL2+ to VDSL2 yesterday. I subscribed to the 100 Mbps plan and my ISP said that my connection sync speed will increase gradually. I started at 45 Mbps (SNR was 17.5 dB) at noon, then it improved to 70 Mbps (SNR 8.2 dB) early morning today. I wanted to know if these stats are good as I am still not familiar with VDSL stats and different VDSL band attenuation, etc. I also wanted to know if my line can handle 100 Mbps (theoretically). Force SMB share to work on fastest interface Posted: 03 May 2018 09:11 AM PDT Well, I'm stucked with the following. I have a host which is a KVM server for a couple of VMs. I'm using OpenVirtualSwitch instead of bridging interfaces. I'm getting speeds of more than 20 Gbits/sec when using the virtual switch and near 1Gbit when using a real phisical gigabit switch. So far, so good. I have a NAS server on one of the VMs and I want to route traffic from the host to the NAS guest trhough the virtual switch so I can benefit for the high transfer speeds. I guess my routing is ok, since when I use iperf I get the stated more than 20Gbits/sec speeds... but when I mount on the host a share from the guest, using SMB, I only get Gigabit speeds so I guess that traffic is going out to the phisical switch and back. Here is my routing table: 192.168.2.13 is my gateway. My host and my guests are on the 192.168.2.0 network so they should route trhough the Bridge interface (OVS). Anything obviously wrong here? This is the whole network diagram: https://imgur.com/a/Se5zNVw As you can see my LAN is still on the bridge interface br0 and the VMs are on the Bridge (OVS) switch. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2018 08:59 AM PDT There seems to be a lot of different ways to get to the same effect, but I'm having trouble getting things to work. I have a rpi2 connected via ethernet to my ddwrt, which currently is hosting an apache2 server that I would like to have all connected traffic visit upon connection. Once they enter a code on this server, I'd like to allow visitors to use the server for a certain amount of time preferably. That's a separate issue that I haven't researched yet though, right now I'm just trying redirect all the received traffic. With all the options (lighttpd, chillispot, httpdirect, dnsmasq, etc), which do I even go for? Most tutorials are for pi3's using the wifi chipset as an AP. [link] [comments] |
Looking at using my own modem and router, any help is appreciated. Posted: 03 May 2018 04:38 AM PDT So, I am going to be moving soon and will be having to switch back to Comcast. Quick rundown on the house. Overall its about 3,300 + SF total. The above grade is 2,284 SF, and that's basically split between the first floor and second floor. So that's about 1,142 SF floor plan. The basement has 4 rooms each walled off, the first floor is pretty open, and the second floor has 4 bedrooms. Okay, so I hate (and when I say this I mean I truly utterly with all my might hate) Comcast. I've dealt with them for years and their bullshit. When I previously had Comcast, I wanted to use my own router. Well, they block access for you to put the modem into bridge mode. I had to call 4 times to get someone to understand what I wanted to do to the point that the almost made me pay an extra $25/month for that. So, I'm tired of them. Unfortunately the only option I have at our new home is Comcast for high speed internet, nothing else as good. So, that being said, I'd like to get my own Modem and Router. For the modem I was looking at buying: ARRIS SURFboard SB6190 32x8 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem. I already checked and this would be compatible with Comcast. Now for the Router; I would like to get a router where I preferably wouldn't need another AP. I can't remember but I'm pretty sure the house is not wired for me to use another AP. I could get it done, but if I can get away with one router I would prefer that. I have a friend who recommend the Ruckus R510. On their website they call this a wireless access point, but is it also a router? Anyways, I'd basically be connecting 3 apple tv's, 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 2 iMacs and a PS4 (which depending on where the location of the router is I would like to hard wire it). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Which Ubiquiti Networks AP would be best for me? Posted: 02 May 2018 09:47 PM PDT I have a 1,900 sq ft, two story, colonial home with typical timber framing & sheet-rock. All of my heavy devices are hard-wired. My main need is continuous coverage throughout my house AND yard. My current setup is an EdgeRouter ER‑X that serves 5 wireless N routers set to AP mode. This setup results in too many dead spots and a very weak signal outside. I'd like to replace all the wireless N devices with Ubiquiti Networks APs. I'm trying to decide between the UAP‑AC‑LITE, UAP‑AC‑LR or UAP‑AC‑PRO. I'm open to installing as many as needed. I just don't know which ones would be ideal. [link] [comments] |
Probably a stupid question, but I need help setting up a network switch Posted: 02 May 2018 08:16 PM PDT I'm having to run internet from the modem to the router, and then back to the network switch. I think this is causing all of the wireless devices to have higher priority and more bandwidth than the wired devices attached to the switch. Is there a way I can connect my modem to the switch directly and then plug the router in through that? I think I read somewhere that I need a smart managed switch, but even then I'm not entirely sure where to look. Any advice would be helpful. We currently have 4 desktops, an xbox, and a steam link connected through the switch, so we'd need about 16 ports minimum. Currently using: Xfinity 400mbps internet Netgear CM1000 modem Netgear Nighthawk X6 Router Netgear GS324 Gigabit Switch [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 May 2018 07:52 AM PDT I recently got my attic converted and i asked the electrician to run an ethernet cable up into it. I assumed he would run up multiple and terminate them in the wall with somethong like a 4 port rj45 wall socket. He didnt There is just 1 cable coming through the wall but that isnt enough. I have 3 devices that need a wired connection. Would a switch work for this problem I was think i could plug the wire that comes through the wall into the switch and then plug everything else into the switch and have my wired connection. Would this work? [link] [comments] |
