Home Networking Setting up Network Closet in New Construction

Setting up Network Closet in New Construction

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:52 PM PDT

Hey, I am in the process of helping my parents as they build their new home. Currently I am working to try and find a place to put the switches, Sonos, cable boxes, a media server, and other networking items. I think we are going to put everything in a closet off of the master bedroom. It is large enough to house all of this stuff, but my question becomes ventilation. Directly above this closet is a storage area, which would easy to have ventilation piped into it. What exactly would be needed to properly ventilate a room like this?

Recommendations for high quality, short-range, outdoor wireless bridges?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:12 PM PDT

The local hotel has 2 buildings, located about 50 to 100 feet apart. Running a cable is not very feasible in this case, but a wireless bridge would be perfect.

The lower building is where internet comes in, and we need to extend it to the upper building.

Questions about implementing UniFi at home

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 08:49 AM PDT

Hello! I am about to move in to a new house. I will be getting 1gbps fiber through CenturyLink and am looking to build a solid wireless network. I have always had trouble in the past using consumer routers such as Linksys and Belkin so I have been looking into UniFi.

What exactly do I need to get UniFi up and working? I currently have a POE managed switch and an unused Raspberry Pi that I was planning on using as the CloudKey. Is all I need now APs? Do I need a USG? Do I need anything else?

From my understanding I will be plugging ethernet from CenturyLink's modem/router into the switch, from the switch into the Pi and APs?

Sorry for so many questions! Thank you in advance.

Looking for information concerning home mesh systems

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 02:00 PM PDT

So I need to upgrade my network from my 4 year old TP-link AC router. My wife wants me to keep it simple so when I am TDY or deployed she can still manage it pretty easily.

    Our house right now doesn't have cabling for wired backhaul but I will make sure the next one has proper in house networking. With this in mind these are the systems I am looking at;

    Eero gen 2 pro

    Google WiFi

    Linksys Velop

    Asus Lyra

I am leaning towards the Eero system or Google but I would like some opinions as to what you guys think are best.

I love the idea of Unifi but my wife wants nothing to do with learning how to manage the system should it happen to fail and I am not present so I think that's out of the question for now.

Any I formation provided is most appreciated!

Just wanted to clarify some things about MoCA

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:27 PM PDT

    Hey,

So I'm looking to set up a home theater in my basement, but my plex server is across the house on the 2nd floor along with the router/modem. I didn't want to break down my wall or use powerline adapters because it doesn't seem to be a good option according to this sub, so I am going for a MoCA adapter instead.

So I have 2 questions. Can I use this? I know it's not hundreds of dollars like MoCA adapters are supposed to be, but it's the top result when I searched MoCA adapter. I would like to save as much money as I can. Second, when I do get a MoCA adapter, I just connect the coax cable from the wall to the adapter, then connect an ethernet cable to the device I will be using for the home theater? I don't need it anywhere near the router/modem right?

[Quick Question] Is "Virtual Server" and "Port Forwarding" the same thing?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:17 PM PDT

I have a modem that's also a router from my ISP company, and in the settings all I can find is "Virtual Server" and "Port Triggering". So if I want to port foward something for example for a game on Steam to run properly, what do I do? A friend of mine said it's the "Virtual Server" option but I'm not sure, you guys probably have the knowledge so help me out if you can, thanks.

Router giving 100% of upload to first client to request upload

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:16 PM PDT

As said in the title, whenever a client is uploading data it will be given the entire bandwidth (0.5mbps, I know..), effectively taking all other devices offline as they can't even send a GET request to a web server.

First of all, is this normal and is there anything I can do without changing my router?

If not, is there a cheap router with QoS that would enable to me only ever give say 75% of upload bandwidth to a single client? I don't need 802.11ac as my download speed peaks at 10mbps.

    Thanks!!

Do VLANs + wifi require more APs or SSIDs?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 01:01 PM PDT

I understand VLAN tagging by port at a wired switch. But if I want some wifi devices on VLAN1 and others on VLAN2, does that require them to use different APs (or SSIDS)?

I imagine an AP or the managed switch it's connected to could put known MAC addresses on certain VLANs and others on a default VLAN. But do any do that? Or is the only solution different APs (SSIDs)?

I'm thinking about buying a bunch of Unifi gear and setting up VLANs for guest/iOT/primary/etc. From what I've read, they can do a VLAN per SSID, but you have performance issues with > 2? SSIDs per radio.

    RT-N66U -> Archer C7 Upgrade... pointless?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 03:02 PM PDT

I just picked up an Archer C7 for a great price but I haven't opened it yet. I am thinking about returning it because I am thinking it's not going to be a significant upgrade like I envisioned. I do have Gigabit Internet.

Should I just return this? It feels like a pointless upgrade.

Is there a way to grant/ refuse wifi access other than use of a password?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 04:37 PM PDT

I've been changing the wifi password every day as a way to get my kids to do their chores, but it can be a royal pain in the fanny. I was wondering if there is a way to select which devices are allowed to connect without being too cumbersome of a process.

My home networking setup is a mess

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 01:55 PM PDT

Hello. This is my first post here.

We have the standard AT&T router and are unfortunately limited to 25mbps up/10mbps down in our area, the best they have around here. However, the results on my computer using the 5GHz band and 1.1.1.1 DNS are about 17 down, and 0.9 up. Not even 1mbps upload speed. Before using 1.1.1.1 it was at 10 down. There is a liberal estimate of 15 devices on my network, and it's painfully slow to use.

I have tried telling my dad to run ethernet cables but he refuses to do so because he is afraid of destroying a wire inside the wall going to an outlet or light switch. It seems like this house will never have Ethernet.

We also have the one router provided by AT&T in a closed-off, small room next to the garage, and cannot move it due to the AT&T guy putting the jack there. My mom is afraid of getting a new router or another router because "AT&T will be angry at us for not using theirs. I mean why would they provide an inadequate router?"

I'm kind of helpless here. What do I do?

Sometimes I stream on Youtube and different routers will yield different view numbers if I watch my own stream. Can anyone explain the technology behind that?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:12 AM PDT

Sometime I stream on Youtube and watch myself live. One is a secondary monitor for the picture, the other is a tablet for the chat.

I used to have a TP-Link router and even if I was my sole viewer it showed 2 viewers (assuming the monitor + the table).

I got a new router and now it shows only 1 viewer. So I was thinking what if I start watching myself on a 3rd device (smartphone). The old router showed 3 viewers but the new one stayed on one.

Mind you in all cases all devices are on the same network!

So I'm just looking for explanation that how does that work. I thought every "outward looking" (ie towards the internet) router has 1 IP address so there shouldn't be a difference but yet there are.

Thanks and sorry if that breaks some rules.

    PoE powered routers with pass-through

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 04:26 AM PDT

    Hi r/HomeNetworking!

I'm looking for a new router/AP since my previous setup died. Preferably, I'm looking for a solution where I can power the router via a POE injector/switch -- and the router should be able to power one additional device, e.g. a wireless access point.

(This is due to due to some poor cabling choices by previous owners. Essentially, I do not have power where my WAN comes in and where I would like to put my router and wireless AP (or combination box?). There is cabling to my living room from this point though, so I could put a (smaller) switch or injector there -- but I would rather not have any other equipment there. No place to put it. Dog chews on it, etc...)

So far, the solutions I've found appears to be either ...

    • Ubiquity EdgerouterX with passive POE passthrough (to e.g. an Unifi AP AC Lite)
    • Mikrotik hAP AC (passive POE input with built in wireless, though I cannot find any reviews of coverage)
    • Mikrotik HEX PoE (passive POE input, active POE output?!) + some wireless AP (Mikrotik CAP AC? Unifi AP AC Lite/PRO? Nano HD?)

Does Ubiquity really not have any other POE powered routers than the Edgerouter X? Are there any other choices/brands out there? What are your recommendations? If I go for e.g. a Mikrotik HEX POE, should I mix vendors and go for a Unifi Nano HD? Does anyone have any experience with Mikrotik equipment? I would prefer 802.3af/at support, but could settle for passive POE.

    Thanks!

Using 2 Internet connections at the same time?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:59 AM PDT

Hello, I've come across a problem at home where I need to use 2 internet connections.

What I want to do is, use my main internet connection (connected via an Ethernet cable) for my main applications and use its download, while connecting to my phone's internet (4G/3G) (via USB) and use its upload for a specific application.

    Is such a thing possible?

Thanks for reading have a nice day.

    Need a new router

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:32 AM PDT

Yesterday we added tv to our internet package from Comcast. Currently we had 25mbps now we are being bumped up to 100mbps and I feel I'm going to struggle even more than I already do.

Current: arris surfboard sb6141 linksys n750

I run two speed tests to compare results. The xfinity test and the normal Speedtest.

In a nutshell these are my results.. also these were done late at night when only me is using the internet.

30 in office (internet boxes are set up here) 21 my room 13.1 bed room 20 bed room

Peak times it drops big time.

Peak times, I'll be on my Xbox and it will lag. My wife will be streaming some stupid 2000s OC housewife shit, or something along those lines while on her phone on top of that.

I feel distance is my issue. Possibly an outdated router? I have had it for quite some time. I also notice that the current 750n has no external antenna. I've looked at a few AC1200 but do I need to go bigger?

    Thanks everyone

What is the correct name for this setup?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:16 AM PDT

Hello all! Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I am trying to set THIS kind of setup at home. Router 1 is my VDSL2 mode/WiFi access point. Router 1 is a Fritz!Box and has a very weak signal. So I was wondering how I could set router 2 up so that it provides the same signal upstairs as downstairs but I wouldn't have 2 different WiFi networks even though the SSID is the same. I have specific IPs assigned to specific MACs and I want the rules to apply whether the device is connected upstairs or downstairs. I guess it's a repeater/ WiFi extender, but the house conveniently has ports all throughout and I just want a wired connection from router 1 to router 2. If this is "bridged mode" can someone explain that to me like I'm 5? I'm just having difficulties understanding that. Router 1 is a Fritz!Box and router 2 is a Linksys DD-WRT router.

If someone can just tell me what kind of set up this is called I can do the research on my own.

    First home network

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:14 AM PDT

My wife and I just bought our first home last month and I want to plan out a project for my home network. I understand networking and stuff to a certain extent, but definitely could learn more. I'm currently using a TG2482A provided by Suddenlink, paying for 400mbps connection. I'm only using their router for now since my modem was incompatible with these speeds and it's included at no additional costs for the first year. It works well and I haven't really had any issues with it, but I'm looking to do a little more than what this device currently offers.

I am looking at hard wiring ethernet into each of the rooms. My home is a little over 1200 square ft. I currently have six devices that can be wired connections and eight wireless. This of course could expand in the future, so I want to be prepared for adding devices to the network. I'd need hard wiring in three bedrooms and the living room. My biggest concern is my main PC which also runs my Plex server and other utilities (SABnzdb, Sonarr, Radarr, etc).

I'm a little confused on wiring, should I run cat5e or cat6? I know my speeds are currently 400mbps, but 1gbps is available in my area and I may switch to it in the future if the costs continue to lower.

And of course, how much should I budget for this project overall? Don't want to break the bank, but also want to set up everything correctly. Will this be a feasible project for me to do myself or should I look into hiring someone? I will have to run all wiring through my attic.

For what I am looking to do, how big of a set up will I need? Should I go with a managed or unmanaged switch? And I've always used regular routers, but should I use APs like Ubiquiti instead?

    Wifi?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 05:09 AM PDT

I avoid wifi whenever possible so I have ethernet in the walls of every room.

My logitech smart hub is the only thing that does the job and it won't take an ethernet connection. It sits in the corner of the living room and the router which cannot be moved sits in the corner of another room. I have solid brick walls so the signal is very poor.

Any time I try to do something with the hub the connection is flaky so I do need to add some kind of wifi connection to the room.

I don't want powerlines. I don't want something that extends wifi by accessing it by wifi.

I just want something that plugs into an ethernet port and allows wifi connections and when I try to find it I find all sorts of other shite that isn't what I'm looking for.

I don't know a great deal about wifi but I do know that all I'm finding is routers, extenders, repeaters, powerline adapters etc.

New House - WAPs everywhere, need help on how to manage it.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 04:16 AM PDT

So, new house is coming wired up pretty sweet. Ethernet lines to each TV location, and we have 3 Access Points (Ruckus R510) in various points. I know the modem/router from AT&T will need to be installed in the box where all the WAP line are ran, but outside of that I'm lost.

I have an office with a computer and phone that runs off VOIP. What would be the best way to have these directly wired in? I have an ethernet port in the wall in the office, but it's just one port. Will a splitter work to run to the computer and the phone? Or is there some sort of wireless device I can just set on the desk that they can both plug into to get them running via wifi?

Also, how can I control wifi access? Is there a way to have certain devices not accessible after certain times? I know some aftermarket modems have this option, but does that work with WAPs, and how does it work since I'll need to have AT&T's modem to get internet?

    Thanks for ANY help!

    4G router with bandwidth control?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 11:57 PM PDT

I plan on getting a 4G SIM card which has Internet access because it's cheaper than an ADSL and offers much greater speeds where I live.

I will need to limit the Internet speed of clients on my network.

For example, I want everyone to have a Internet speed of 1Mb/s besides me who has 10/Mb/s.

I tried looking online but manufacturers advertise bandwidth control but they limit how many gigabytes a user can use per month.

Does anyone know any routers that support this?

This would mean a lot to me.
