    1070ti being recognized as a 1060 6GB. Did I get swindled?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 01:41 PM PDT

So I ordered a 1070ti off Amazon and, upon installation, it's recognized as a 1060 6GB. Using Belarc Advisor shows the same thing and looking us the Ven and Dev values shows that it's a 1060 as well. Drivers are the latest version for the system hardware. Anyone ever run into a similar situation?

EDIT: I'm having suspicions that they either swapped backplates or just the stickers on the backplate and sold me a 1060...The box matches the serial on the backplate sticker, but that doesn't mean much.

EDIT 2: Thanks for the responses everyone. Looks like a vendor issue and not an actual technical problem. Case closed. I've issued a return.

Windows 10 - How to change login/sign-in screen image?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:57 AM PDT

I'm not talking about lock screen, I'm not talking about sleep, or hibernate, or anything of that sort. Its when you turn the PC off via power switch, and then boot it up again when you have no password set (meaning it boots you straight to desktop with no additional user input)

W10 will display some default background image during this process, mine is a picture of a cave. I want to change that picture of a cave to something of my own. Yes I know, there is a setting in "Customization -> Lock screen -> "Show lock-screen background image on the sign-in screen" But it doesn't work. I have googled this issue a lot but none of the proposed methods work. I have found the directory where W10 stores (atleast in some form) the default background pictures used in the log-in screen, and have located and changed the "Cave" one to my own choosing, but that didnt work either (still showed the Cave)

Is there a good 2018 guide to help people setup/secure a PC against threats for their non-tech parents/grandparents/kids/friends?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 06:27 AM PDT

I looked in the sidebar, but I didn't see a section for this type of information.

I found this from a few years ago, but I don't know if the information is still good.

Roommate blocked all other (4) roommates from wifi via mac addresses. Need ideas and help please!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 11:15 PM PDT

The roommate who has control of the router has blocked all 4 of us other roommates from using WiFi (phones, laptops, PC) and obviously he won't allow us to direct connect with Ethernet (router is in his room). There's no reason for him to do this aside from pure saltiness at us for who knows what. Confrontation/talking it out hasnt and will not work as it seems he gets a high off having power over us. We don't know the password for the router as he changed it nor can we answer the security questions for recovery. I don't believe he's very tech savvy as he blocked all of the mac addresses, instead of specific devices, aside from the Xbox (so he can play fortnite and watch Netflix). Luckily, 1 of the other roommates also has an Xbox so we can still connect to the internet through that. So my question is, what can we do to bypass this aside from a factory reset of the router (locked room)? If nothing, is there anything we can do to also kick him off WiFi? Or even destroy the router (not physically)? It's not his router, and the person who owned the router said they are fine with it being ruined. This is one of the lesser petty/disrespectful/cruel things he has done in the past few weeks as he is moving out. We would like our WiFi back but could honestly care less about it now; it's more about sending a message at this point as there is no reason for him to be doing any of this aside from trying to have control over us due to some unknown, top shelf pettiness, reasoning. Please don't suggest just taking the router back, as the router was one of few the owner had so he told the power tripper he could just have it over a year ago and this is not the effect we seek. Any other ideas you might have are welcomed and appreciated.

Transferred 2.5 TB of data from one HDD to another HDD but after the transfer finished the new HDD is short 15 GB of files. How do I find which data didn't copy over?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:19 AM PDT

So I bought a new 3 TB HDD in order to relieve some pressure on my bloated PC. I have a 3 TB HDD already inside the PC and it has maxed out its capacity a few times so Im afraid that it may suffer from some file fragmentation. I had the idea that I would move all the files from old 3TB HDD to new 3TB HDD. I would then format the old HDD and then move back all the files so as to perform a sort of makeshift defragmentation.

So after I moved the files over, there is a storage discrepancy. Both HDDs have a 2.72 TB capacity but the new HDD has 245GB of free space but the old HDD has 260GB of free space. The old HDD is a spare HDD just for file storage and doesn't have any partitions or any OSes on it. This is the second time I've done the transfer (took about 8 hours both times) and the new drive was empty both times. How could I have transferred over more data than exists on the old drive? Is there an easy way to check if there are any files that are on only one of the drives and not the other?

    Network Transfers Limited to 100mbps

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 01:00 AM PDT

I have 2 Windows 10 PCs connected to my gigabit switch. I have created a file share on one of them. The transfer speeds are capped at 100mbps. I have checked the network settings and both PCs are recognizing it as a gigabit connection. The hard drives aren't limiting the speed either. Why aren't the files transferring faster than 100mbps.

    BIOS update bricked my laptop

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:47 AM PDT

I have a Toshiba Satellite that had BIOS version 1.0 on it and I wanted to update it to v5.3. I went onto Toshiba's website and downloaded the installer. The battery on my laptop is crap so I use it more as a desktop by taking the battery out so the installer insisted I plug it back in. I did so but Windows wasn't detecting it so I did a restart. Should have been a simple enough task but instead of restarting, it made a noise that it only makes when I need to force a shutdown by disconnecting the power completely so I am assuming it lost power even though it had the battery and mains power. I didn't think much of it as Windows was now detecting my battery and logged in and ran the BIOS installer again. It unpacked some files and restarted without a hitch and started installing the BIOS. Once it finished, however, I assume it went to reboot but it again made the noise like it lost power and didn't boot back up. "Strange..." I thought and I powered it on but now it says "error: failure reading sector 0x0 from 'cd0'." and boots into the GRUB command line (I had it dual booted with Windows 10 and Linux). I have a recovery USB and when I boot from that and go "Use another operating system" there are 6 Windows 10 (on volume 5)'s.

Also, I can get into the BIOS and it did in fact update to v5.3.

Keeping / Increasing Laptop Battery Lifetime (plug or unplug?)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:37 AM PDT

So atm I am using only my Laptop and I was wondering what is the "healthiest" for my battery? Currently I am doing this:

    • fully charging battery -> plug out -> let battery run to 10% -> recharge

Is it better if I dont use my battery at all, except for when I go outside?

Living nightmare, having to restart dozens of times just to get into Windows. Think it's power supply?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:33 AM PDT

Alright so basically I've been having this problem where if I turn off my computer and turn it on again, I need to get lucky to get back into my operating system. Blank screen, Windows boot issues giving me automatic repair screen assuming I make it that far. More often than not it requires 20+ restarts and that's assuming my monitor powers up and my drives power up correctly and put me into Windows.

First system, used for about a year without issue until this started happening around a month ago

    • i7 6700K not overclocked + Cryorig H7 cooler
    • Gigabyte Z170 Gaming-3 motherboard
    • EVGA 1080ti FTW3 graphics card
    • G-Skill Rip Jaws DDR4 3200mhz CL-16-18-18-38 1.35v 8GB memory x2 (16GB total)
    • PNY 240GB SSD + Crucial 750GB SSD + 3TB 7200rpm hard drive, no idea what brand
    • EVGA SuperNOVA 750W Bronze rated power supply

    New system, built today.

    • Ryzen 2700X not overclocked + Cryorig H7 cooler
    • AsRock X470 SLI motherboard (tried both 1.0 and beta 1.10 UEFI BIOS)
    • EVGA 1080Ti FTW3 graphics card
    • G-Skill Rip Jaws DDR4 3200mhz CL-16-18-18-38 1.35v 8GB memory x2 (16GB total)
    • PNY 240GB SSD + Crucial 750GB SSD + 3TB 7200rpm hard drive, no idea what brand
    • EVGA SuperNOVA 750W Bronze rated power supply

    Shared hardware between builds

    • The case (Fractal Design Define R5)
    • The drives (unplugged those, doesn't solve monitor issue)
    • The monitor (HDMI input works on other devices every time, can't test DisplayPort)
    • The power supply (EVGA SuperNOVA 750W Bronze rated)

Compounded with the fact that my memory isn't running at the advertised speed and my overclocks restart the computer, this really sucks... Impossible to test overclocks and if my computer turns off for whatever reason, I spend 15+ minutes turning on and turning off my computer while unplugging DisplayPort/HDMI cables just to get a screen. Strange thing is, the computer ALWAYS turns on and my USB peripherals seem to get through POST almost every single time since I see them light up while the screen is blank.

Does this sound like a power supply issue? I've never dealt with a power supply failure before.

Bluetooth headphones not pairing (with eachother)

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:31 AM PDT

My bluetooth headphones wont pair/sync with eachother anymore. On my phone and laptop they show up as two different devices (left side and right side). I can connect to them separately, but my phone only allows to connect to one device at a time.

It's been over 3 weeks and I've tried nearly everything, tried googling, but that didn't help, because all of the results are about connecting to your phone.

New HDD making a weird noise

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:28 AM PDT

So, I bought a 2TB HDD a few days ago to replace my old one.

Ever since I installed the HDD, It's been making a weird noise that sounds very similar to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPS78wX5ztY (It's not a repeated sound like in the link, it's one clicking sound each time)

The sound occurs atleast once a minute (sometimes several times in a minute) or when the drive has been idle for a while and I use my PC
(my windows installation is on an SSD) My old HDD didn't have this problem so this troubles me. Should I RMA it?

Pc thinks i keep connecting another monitor.

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:09 AM PDT

Hello, so basically the problem is my pc thinks that I am connecting and disconnecting a 2nd monitor. When this happens my mouse and keyboard starts lagging. This doesn't let me play/work on my pc and it's very troublesome. When this happens there is a usb disconnect/recoonect sound playing too. I assume its the pc thinking that I am connecting and disconnecting a monitor. Also in my display tab in AMD settings, i see that my TV(which i have been using all this time as a monitor) is no.2 meaning there is another monitor connected. Problem us I have never ever connected another monitor or TV to my pc. Also in device manager under monitors tab, there is a Generic Non-PnP Monitor registered. I don't know what that is but it keeps disappearing and reappearing when the problem happens. Also under USB controllers there is a Unknown USB device ( Device Descriptor Request Failed ) with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. I don't know if it's related to it or not though.

    PC Specs :

    OS : Windows 10 64bit Ram : Team Elite Plus 8GB 2400MHz DDR4 Processor : Intel Core i3 6100 3.7Ghz Motherboard : Gigabyte H110m-S2PV (DDR4) Hard Drive : Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM PSU : FSP Hexa+ 450W

Any suggestion is appreciated. THANK YOU

Android notifications of an application not stacking up and clogging up the notifications

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 03:03 AM PDT

I'm using a Moto G 1st gen phone that is running on Android 5.1. I have a security camera application installed that gives me a notification whenever the installed camera senses any kind of motion. Previously, it was only showing the most recent notification and was discarding the previous ones automatically. Lately, for the past few days every individual notification for every detected activity just stays there and is clogging my notifications. I now have to manually discard each and every one of them.

Is there any way to either revert back to how the notifications were being handled before or to stack up the individual alerts into a single notification that can be discarded with a single swipe?

Is there a utility to scan my home WiFi to assess what devices are using it and how much?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 07:31 PM PDT

About a third of the time I try to do anything on my home WiFi (stream video, play Xbox, etc) I experience very poor network performance, for no obvious reason. Is there a way to determine where my network resources are being allocated to see if it is something on my end, rather than a bad incoming signal?

I work in IT so I'm open to something more complicated than a user-friendly GUI if need be.

    network drops shortly

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:13 AM PDT

I've recently bought a new laptop (Lenovo y520) and I've got some networking issues but I cant figure out the origin of the problem.

The following symptoms: while gaming (rainbow six siege, over LAN) I sometimes get disconneted from a match this is once maybe twice a night. The network setup is something I cant manage because its in a student house where all network stuff is managed by an external company ( I can however give them a call to ask for changes in the router). As far as I can see the internet goes trough a modem than a firewall device thingy (juniper srx100) and then the router.

The strange part is when I get disconnected, windows (10) doesnt recognize it as a disconnect it says its still connected also discord voice chat just keeps working.

Rainbow six siege is my first game on pc/laptop, I normally game on my ps4 (same game) which doesnt have the networking issues.

Another symptom is when I'm at my Internship/work I need to do a lot of research on the internet (I use chrome and this is over wifi) sometimes when I open a new webpage or tab chrome only shows half a page or a white page but chrome thinks it's done downloading the page and I need to refresh the page myself in order to get all the content.

I just cant seem to find a similarity between these internet problems. The only one I can think of is something with this laptop.

It happens on different networks (at home or at work). So it cant be the network, right?

It happens with different network cards(LAN vs WiFi). So it cant be the hardware, right?

And it happens with different applications (R6 Siege vs Chrome) But not with discord which runs at the same time as siege. So it cant be the service or an application bug, right?

Anyone knows what can be the source of this problem. Or does anyone know how I can find the source (monitoring software?) Maybe someone with the same problem? Because it is getting anoying and maybe I'll give up pc gaming again bacause of this :(

    USB device not recognized

    Posted: 25 Apr 2018 02:10 AM PDT

I am really confused about why my DAC won't work on my laptop.

Devices: win 10 thinkpad, wyrd (a glorified powered usb hub), a DAC (schiit gungnir). Also for control I have a surface pro (win 10) and a set of SONY speakers with a DAC (CAS-1).

What I am trying to do: connect the laptop to the schiit DAC and play music with it, via the WYRD or not.

Problem: The laptop won't recognize the DAC if connected directly, as in it doesn't even show up in the device manager as an unknown device. It just doesn't show up.

If I connect the laptop to the WYRD, then connect the WYRD to the DAC, the laptop reads it as an unknown device.

In more details. When the usb is plugged, the laptop pops a window telling me the USB device is not recognized, and suggests me to reconnect it (which obviously doesn't work). And in the device manager, it shows up as "Unknown USB device (Device Description Request Failed)". In the events the device is not started, the configured (usb.inf), then not migrated.

But things got more complicated here.

If I connect laptop to the wyrd then to the sony DAC/speakers, it works perfectly fine. So the wryd should be performing normally.

If I connect the DAC directly to the Surface pro, they work perfectly well too. So the DAC should be fine.

But if I connect the surface pro to the wyrd, and the wyrd to the schiit DAC, the surface pro reports the exactly same problem the laptop reported when it was connecting to the wyrd then the DAC.

And for control, the laptop and the surface pro work with the sony DAC, with or without the wyrd connected in the middle.

Edit: while I am typing this, the laptop->wyrd->sony DAC connection failed. It now displays a little red circle with white cross in it on the sound symbol. Removing the wyrd and connect the laptop directly to the sony DAC made no difference.

    Things I have tried:

I have disabled fast startup, and tweaked the usb power management so that it doesn't shut down by itself. I downloaded the driver for the schiit DAC, but it won't install because it cannot detect a schiit device (either connected directly or via the wyrd). (The surface pro has a working schiit driver.)

I have tried to update the driver for the unknown device in the device manager, but it told me that the "unknown device ((Device Description Request Failed)" is the best driver for me.

I have re-installed the chipset update provided for my laptop and the realtek driver, uninstalled and re-installed drivers for all the usb hubs, updated the BIOS. The win 10 system is also up to date.

I have tried to use the registry method provided by Schiit, but I cannot find the "EnhancedPowerManagementEndabled" item.

I have also turned off the laptop, unplugged it, and let it sit for ~2 minutes. I plan on doing this again for 15 minutes after posting this and fixing the just occurred sony DAC problem.

    END

Please help, I am running out of ideas of what to check. I am not even sure which device is malfunctioning here. Any input will be appreciated.

    Random numbers calling everyday

    Posted: 24 Apr 2018 07:24 PM PDT

I know it's normal to get calls from random numbers sometimes, but I've been getting multiple random number calls a day from all over the country. Sometimes from different countries. I never answer, and I think it's a bigger problem than people accidentally calling the wrong number. Is it possible that someone else in the world has my same phone number? I know this sounds stupid but it's getting way to frequent almost creepy. I have been blocking every number that is calling me. It's not the same number calling, just so many different random ones. Sometimes from my state sometimes places I've never been. How can I stop this?
