    VoIP Engineering Interview

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:54 AM PST

I currently work as a Telecom Engineer for a fairly large sized enterprise. I am looking to get a new job because the pay isn't that great.

I have an interview with a law firm for a position doing basically the same thing that I'm doing now, but for nearly double the pay.

My question is, what kind of material can I bring to the interview besides a resume? I have been involved in several large scale projects and am solely responsible for the telecom operations at my current job. I'm just not sure how to show the hiring manager any kind of physical document. In my mind I'm thinking network diagrams but what would he care? Any advice is appreciated. If there is a better sub for this, please let me know.

I have 2 network engineer Interviews coming up and got a few questions

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 11:09 AM PST

    Hey Everyone, good day.

I have 2 network engineer interviews coming up. One is a senior role. I am a Network+, CCNA, CCNP, with 4-5 years in networking experience. Most if not all of my jobs don't use routing protocols, and I wouldn't really consider them "enterprise" level. I do work with layer 3/2 switches, firewalls, large wireless systems etc.

However, I see these roles have things like EIGRP, F5 Load Balancers, OSPF, etc. type of info. I had the intro interviews and while I think I did pretty good, there is a few things I just dont have experience with. How do I answer the "do you have experience with OSPF in a enterprise?" question? Sure I'v labbed it a thousand times, i get the concepts. I just havent had a role with it.

Same with f5 load balancers (though i did a bit of research on this, dosn't seem that hard honestly). As well as a few other technologies. I mean, do I lie, or uh "fake it till you make it"? I hoenstly could figure this stuff out, im pretty sharp and skilled. But when they ask do you have experieince with X right now im saying "i have had some light experience with X and have ran through this in many labs, etc. I am a quick learner etc".

But how do I go about nailing this without having the yes answer to all the experience?

I'm really trying to break out of my underpaid pay scale right now, and appreciate any feedback.

250m (800ft) Cat5e run - originally installed for intercom - can it be used for LAN?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 11:51 AM PST

A client of mine has an 800ft Cat5e run, burried under concrete. It was originally intended for an analog intercom, but was never used.

Now, the client wants his LAN extended to this building for security cameras and WiFi.

There's trees blocking line of sight, so WiFi is impractical. There's concrete everywhere, so fibre is impractical.

Can I do anything with this Cat 5e run?

I've been looking at VDSL extenders, but they seem pretty pricey for poor performance. Do I have other options?

    Looking glass for VyOS?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:44 AM PST

I'm looking for a looking glass that can work with the latest version of VyOS.

The problem is they've disabled shell access for operator users which means most (if not all) LGs don't work anymore. This also applies for EdgeOS (EdgeRouter).

    Any ideas? Thanks :-)

IP Addressing Schemes: Dividing address space by location, or role?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 03:40 PM PST

What's your preferred method subnetting a private address space? Do you prefer to divide it up by site/location (ex: Site A gets 10.1.0.0/16, Site B gets 10.2.0.0/16), or do you prefer to divide it up by logical role (ex: All end user data subnets are provisioned from 10.0.0.0/13, all voice subnets are provisioned from 10.8.0.0/13)?

Cisco ASAs: Forwarding Traffic via S2S through another S2S VPN

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 11:46 PM PST

    Hi,

I have a problem which I can't get solved and I'm unsure, if the Cisco ASA is capable of give me a working solution.

    Problem (see graph):

    • 3x locations with Cisco ASA as edge router
    • each location with a different internal address space
    • locations are connected via S2S VPN in a "row" = loc1 <-> loc2 <-> loc3
    • Client No. 1 of loc1 can reach servers in loc2 (of course)
    • Client No. 1 cannot reach servers in loc3 (of course)
    • CANNOT share encryption domain between ASA No. 1 and ASA No. 3

    Not-working solution:

    • NAT on ASA No. 2 like "OUTSIDE, OUTSIDE <Client No. 1 IP> <Server No. 2 IP> <Port> <Port>" do not work
    • NAT on ASA No. 2 with virtual-IP from ASA No. 2 network does also not work

    Thoughts:

    • "not work" means, I can see connections building up on ASA No. 2 but they are not reaching ASA No. 3
    • NATed traffic tries to exit via default gateway from ASA No. 2 to the "internet" and not being send through the tunnel

    Working solution:

    • setting up a DNAT on Server No. 1 from Client No. 1 to Server No. 2 is working fine

    Graph:

     +-----------------+ +-----------------+ +-----------------+ | ASA No. 1 | +-------------+ | ASA No. 2 | +-------------+ | ASA No. 3 | | | S2S | | S2S | | | ext 1.1.1.1 | EncDom: | ext 2.2.2.2 | EncDom: | ext 3.3.3.3 | | int 10.0.1.0/24 | 10.0.1.0/24 | int 10.0.2.0/24 | 10.0.2.0/24 | int 10.0.3.0/24 | | | 10.0.2.0/24 | | 10.0.3.0/24 | | +-----------------+ +-----------------+ +-----------------+ + + + | L2 | L2 | L2 | | | + + + +-----------------+ +-----------------+ +-----------------+ | Client No. 1 | | Server No. 1 | | Server No. 2 | | | | | | | | loc 10.0.1.2 | | loc 10.0.2.2 | | loc 10.0.3.2 | | | | | | | | | | | | | +-----------------+ +-----------------+ +-----------------+
