    Simple Questions - March 04, 2018

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 04:13 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Building small PC for children's dialysis unit.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 12:22 AM PST

So I've recently been working with a children's dialysis unit. These kids sit on the machines for 3-6 hours, they're bored and most of them are lower income so one kid having a switch or something becomes a thing of jealousy. We have two n64s and one GameCube but we have anywhere from 6-14 patients at a time. I talked to my boss and he said he's love the idea but I need to build kinda a proof of concept for the kids to use before he can approve funds to build multiples. What are the minimum specs for a small form factor pc I could build for them? A few of the nurses are willing to maybe chip in but we need to figure out a budget. Anyone willing to help me their together an idea of what I'm going to need budget wise for our first unit?

Is it really worth building right now or waiting until the prices settle down?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:52 AM PST

I have built a few PCs, but my personal machine, which was built in 2013 is getting to a point where it may need some catching up to price it up to spec. Specifically, a new MOBO, redoing the DDR3 into DDR4 ram and looking at possibly getting another GPU would be a smart move for me.

With the current prices due to mining and other various circumstances inflating the market, do you think that things will settle in the next 3 months or is this something that's going to linger for longer than that.

Is it fine to clean my cpu with Denatured Alcohol 96%?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:01 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

I am gonna clean my cpu tomorrow because I want to replace my Cryorig H7 with a Nzxt Kraken x62. But I have to clean my CPU first, I saw on the internet that using isopropyl alcohol 99% is the best option. But I can't find any isopropyl alcohol in my city. Is it fine to use denatured alcohol 96% instead of isopropyl alcohol? Or does denatured mean the same as isopropyl?

Can i make my PC not sound like a jet engine?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 08:39 AM PST

My PC is constantly noisy and even more when i'm playing demanding games. Here are noise producing parts:

    • Asus Prime B350 Plus Motherboard
    • Ryzen 5 1600 with stock cooler
    • EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW HYBRID GAMING
    • NZXT S340 Case with 2 intake in front and 1 exhaut at back.

I can't tell if any of the fans is making more noise so i'm not sure if it comes from the CPU fan or the case fans. I have set the fans to Silent in the bios and it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference.

Would there be any way to turn off fans and override the fan speed controller with a different one that would make less noise?

    Thanks.

    SSD really necessary?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 03:54 PM PST

I was planning on building a PC build, and someone told I should add a SSD to my build, but someone else told me it shouldn't matter too much, I know it's faster than a HDD, but is it really worth the 50 or 60 dollars?

To upgrade or to NOT upgrade for Video Editing?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 12:39 PM PST

Currently have a Dell XPS 8700 prebuild. It started out pretty basic, but I've made minor changes lately that have started to make a budget editing PC, but it's definitely getting old.

Ideally, I'm looking for better 1080p editing. Currently using Davinci Resolve to process my DNGs and Vegas to assemble the cut. As of now, Resolve is where my performance is terrible, as my GPU ain't all that good.

Current Specifications (all post-purchase modifications starred):

OS: Windows 10 Home x64 on EVO 860 250gb SSD*

    Data Drive: Seagate 1TB 7200rpm

CPU: Intel i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40gGHz, Quad Core

    GPU: NVidia GeForce 635

    RAM: 12.0GB DDR3* out of 32GB Max

    PSU: Dell Stock 385w

    Motherboard: Dell Stock

Is it worth it to upgrade to a new system so I can take advantage of DDR4, or just keep building off what I already have? Here's what I had in mind for my new build, which is very budget friendly for me, as I'm trying to get it under $850:

Provide any additional details you wish below.

He already has a Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB. I had a few questions. Is the processor overkill for 1080p gaming? Is there a cheaper (i.e. less features) motherboard which will work with this build? He wants to use liquid cooling, although I think air cooling will be sufficient. How difficult is it to install liquid cooling and how much work does it take to maintain it?

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

    The Unluckiest Builder

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 09:08 PM PST

Hello everyone. This might be a tad on the long side but I hope it helps someone that might be feeling down on their luck. I've had the most terrible luck as of late regarding my dream build. A little backstory before I begin. I won't bore you with details or anything but things have been terrible for me for quite some time now. My biggest joy was getting online at night and relax playing games with my buddy. Unfortunately, as my luck would have it, a few years back, my old PC got fried. So over the course of a year and some change, I've been saving up what little I could for a new gaming PC. My dream build consists of:

Both the GPU and PSU were given to me by my best friend, while some other misc stuff was brought over from my old build (i.e. mouse, keyboard, over saturated monitor). I actually received the final part I lacked, the GPU, early on Friday. I tried my best to not show it, but I was ecstatic knowing that I might be playing Battlefield and Vermintide 2 this weekend. Big ol' smile everywhere I went.

That Friday evening, I picked up my daughter from the movies and headed home in anticipation for my 2nd computer build. I put on some smooth music and got to work. Now, here is where I begin my descent into madness and depression.

While enjoying some jams, I decide to begin with the somewhat intimidating, ROSEWILL BLACKHAWK 117. I knew it was going to be big and intimidating, but I had no idea it thirsted for blood. There I was taking the massive thing out of the box, when suddenly I feel a warm sensation oozing down my hand. A small gash had appeared where I had gripped the case seconds ago. I tend to the wound and continue onwards thinking nothing was going to spoil that evening for me.

After spending about a hour sorting cables and dealing with the case's unending hunger for my flesh, due entirely to its razor sharp edges which kept inflicting paper cut like wounds all over my hands, despite my carefulness. I get started with the Motherboard hoping for a more normal experience. As I dug through the contents of the motherboard, I slowly backed up into the case, which was at an angle. I honestly thought I was stabbed by, due to the location of the wound, my neighbor's kid who was roaming around the house playing with a cousin of mine. The culprit was, of course, the damned case. I decided to move the case the corner of the room with a sheet covering it.

I then continued with motherboard; tried to wrap my head around all the new stuff I had missed out on over the years. I pieced together as much as I could and moved on to the CPU cooler. It was a breeze to figure out and therefore moved on to the next items.

Once I had everything in order, I decided to bring out the vicious behemoth and try to tame it. At first, everything was going fine. Part after part fell into their appropriate spot with general ease. For the most part, it was like putting Legos together. Despite the smooth sailing, I didn't let the continuing cuts and nicks put a damper on things.

I noticed that it was pretty late and contemplated going to bed to start fresh in the morning, but despite the war wounds, I felt invigorated knowing I was nearing the end. I had hoped to surprise my friends that night, but unfortunately, my terrible luck had reared its head. It began with me stubbing my toe on the case. Then, I noticed I had made an error mounting the CPU cooler and had to redo the mounting process; tedious mess. Afterwards, I proceeded with adding the GPU to my build, and testing it out. At this point, it was around 3 AM, but I was still somewhat giddy with excitement.

First thing I notice once I turn on the PC, is the red lighting enveloping the case. "How ominous", I say to myself as I marvel at my handiwork. This is when the crippling problems start. No image on the monitor. I start troubleshooting in an effort to figure out where I went wrong. After a while of reading and testing stuff out, I find out that I had to reset the CMOS. No dice. Several minutes later, I notice a small led screen at the bottom of the motherboard showing off an error code. I quickly gather my wits and proceed to figure out what it all meant. CPU issues. No biggie, I thought. I try various things and finally, I get past the error message. Unluckily for me though, another error message popped up. Some time later, I somehow fixed it and moved on to a NEW error message. At this point, I feel the anxiety kicking in as feelings of depression start to slowly envelope me.

At this point, I was completely lost in troubleshooting madness and when I finally look at the time, It's 7 AM. I sadly message my friend, knowing he was up by then, or at least close to waking up. I inform him of my terrible night and decide to throw in the towel. I head to bed in defeat.

Several hours later, I wake up sore and bruised from my untold battles with the Blackhawk case. Despite feeling lost and saddened, I eat lunch and decide to give the PC another go. By this time, my friend had messaged me several times and provided a bit of help.

I honestly don't even remember how, but somehow, after battling the case all night, accusing my ram sticks for being faulty, left wondering if something was wrong with the GPU and/or CPU, I finally see a flicker of hope. The Bios screen. Within 20 or so minutes, I update the bios and install Windows 10. Finally!, I thought to myself as I moved on to what I thought was going to be bigger and greater things.

"Time to update Windows and go on from there," I told myself out loud. "Nay", said an ominous voice nearby as the PC shuts itself off. I assumed it was due to the infamous windows 10 update feature that garners a lot of hate. I restart and attempt to update the GPU drivers. This is that start of a new nightmare for me. Hours upon hours later, I conclude three things:

    1. The Motherboard wasn't registering the existence of the GPU in none of the PCI E slots.
    2. The GPU itself was problematic (Fans would speed up and then halt completely; no image; made clicking noises a few times).
    3. Screw the Blackhawk 117. It's a ferocious, monstrosity hellbent on wiping out the human race, or at least me.

After all these turn of events, miserable and depressed, I attempt to salvage what I can. The GPU is likely not going to work, the case is DEFINITELY getting refunded, the ram sticks were luckily in working condition and the motherboard...

Luckily, or so I thought, I bought into what I thought was an awesome deal. A 4 year warranty plan! I look up the information and find out that my device is covered by SquareTrade. I do all the necessary hoop jumping in an attempt to get a new motherboard since mine was problematic from the start. They have me select through a selection of options what best represented my situation. They all sounded similar but I chose what I thought best represented my scenario. DENIED reads a message after I completed the asked questions. I start to panic at this point due to having the case closed off. Fortunately, I find an option for a live agent. Within minutes, I'm talking to a gentleman with a thick Indian accent by the name of Steve (I think). He tells me that I was denied due to my problem not being one of a mechanical nature, but rather man made. I carefully explain my situation and all he does for me is point me towards the manufacturer and wishes me luck. All I can think at this point is FML since I know I won't be able to afford a new one anytime soon (too many debts and bills).

All in all, I've had a terrifying roller coaster ride of a weekend. All I wanted was to play some games with my friends, but now I'll very likely be waiting a long time. I'll try my luck on Monday with ASRock. No need to mention the GPU situation. Will be on the market for a new case too someday. At the end of the day. I hope no one has to go through this torment, but if you do, you can feel a bit better knowing some random cat out there is having it worse.

TL;DR Fuck the Blackhawk 117 and my bad luck.

How much of an improvement is the gtx 1060 over the gtx 760?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 01:03 PM PST

I built my pc in 2013 and I installed a gtx 760 at the time. Last summer I had the chance to upgrade my motherboard, cpu, and ram (read: the motherboard died and it was as good of an excuse as any to buy some new stuff). Now I have the itch to upgrade my gpu but I dont know how much of an improvement I would see.

What's the best bang for the buck 1440p monitor to pair with a 1080 ti and 8700k these days? I should be able to get good enough fps to support 1440p I would imagine. My budget is $300-$450. I'm just totally lost on the new monitor technology.

Edit: Mainly using it for gaming. 24" or 27".

First time builder. Want to make sure everything is alright.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 04:32 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, streaming(watching) and browsing YouTube, Reddit, Twitch, Netflix etc.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

First build, so I'm not really sure.
The screen I'm buying is 1920x1080 60Hz so I would want to utilize that as much as I can.
60fps is what I'm going for since it's still better than I'm used to. But is it fine that the monitor is 60Hz and that I would (hopefully) play at a constant 60fps?
And if I were to find another monitor with more than 60Hz, would I be able to get more than 60fps from my build? (In the pcpartpicker link)

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around 1000-1200$

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Denmark

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Original PCPP

I'm making my first budget build. I've been a console player my whole life but want to make the switch.

I want to know if there's anything else I need to do. Get some additional cords for something?
Maybe I need a better video card or maybe I could save money on other/cheaper RAM?
    Will everything fit?

I chose MicroATX since, from what I can tell, it's just a smaller form factor and I don't have much room.
I already have Win10 OS code and a G403 Prodigy mouse.

Can we talk about high end CPUs?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:06 AM PST

So, I'm building a computer in a couple of weeks (for about £3000 UK). This is my first build ever and I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm putting in build requests here and watching tonnes of videos to see how it's all put together. Hopefully, I won't mess it up.

However, I've seen a lot of contradictory information regarding CPUs with regard to which one will be right for me.

First and foremost, the computer is intended for content creation (filmmaking, video editing, VFX, compositing, photo, some 3D work, etc). Programs I'll like be using a lot is the Adobe Suite (Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, Audition), Da Vinci Resolve. Red Giant's Magic Bullet Suite. 3D graphics software such as Blender, Maya, 3DS Max and Cinema4D.

Secondly, I do want to play badass games too (sometimes for myself, and maybe also recording gameplay and commentary for youtube videos).

The content creation has to come first, but some killer gameplay would be sweet.

I've got about about £3000 to spend, so I think I can put together a good system overall (likely a 1080 graphics card, 32GB or 64 GB RAM, etc), but I am hopelessly lost on the CPU, and I seem to hear different things from every person I listen to.

I think it comes down to a couple:

Either the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950x or Intel 19 7900k?

Or maybe even the little brother to each of these: Threadripper 1920x or 17 8700k?

Obviously, I'd like to spend as little money as possible, but at the same time I don't want to skimp out on one if these as it's probably the most important part of the build.

What are going to be the real world differences between the AMD and Intel processors?

For instance, one guy on youtube, Max Yuryev (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PphEQqI1Nck), created an incredible 8K video editing machine (with a threadripper 1950x). It looks like a power house and he seemingly got this computer to work even though Linus Tech Tips did a more expensive build (without a threadripper) that couldn't match it.

So, the answer is Threadripper, right?

Well, the same guy, Max Yuryev, later posted another video, stating that Ryzen has fallen, and instead uses an I7 8700K. It's a lower budget build, but I think he was saying Intel was kicking it's ass.

I don't know, I'm far from an expert, but I just see everyone saying different things to each other and I don't know what to do.

    Can you guys advise me?

Is this GPU better than intel integrated 520?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 05:32 AM PST

I recently built my first pc. It has 8gb of ram and intel 520 graphics. I found this GPU here and I am wondering if it will be a improvement for gaming then the integrated graphics. I am aware I won't be able to play newer games or max settings. I play CS:GO, unturned, tf2, Minecraft type games.

In these times of Evil Miners™, I attempt to build a pc

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 03:21 PM PST

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

My expectations for this build are for it to handle high-performance gaming, but I'd appreciate some information on how viable it'd be to stream the games at 1080p60(or 720p60 if 1080 is overkill). The games I'm likely to stream are Fortnite/Runescape/WoW.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    1440p, 70-100 fps, High/Ultra

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

1500-2000 not including a monitor but going above wouldn't be impossible.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

I've been watching videos/reading forums trying to get a decent list established. Here is the pcparts link : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/V4RWZR Provide any additional details you wish below.

I would love any opinions on parts you think are a great idea, aswell as anything you think is absolutely moronic and why. None of the parts are set in stone. As far as the Graphics card, I'm hoping to find a deal on newegg/massdrop/ebay so I don't have to spend 800-1000 bucks on a card. From my limited understanding i feel a 1070/1070 ti would be ideal for the performance I'm aiming towards, but I'm all ears.

OH, and I'm trying to build around this monitor : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4ENDXR/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Best way to switch nzxt s340(or any other tower) front panel mic and headphone ports.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2018 12:47 PM PST

I bought a Sennheiser HD579 headphone, for some reason, it uses a 6.5mm audio jack in stead of the regular 3.5mm, but it comes with an adapter. When plugged into my front panel mic port, it feels a bit loose. It rarely gets recognized unless pushed really hard or at certain angle. When it does, it loses connection easily when touched. My other headphones work fine because the jacks seem to be plugged in a lot firmer. Here's a video demostration.
Is it easily replace the physical port. Because I tried to do it in software using my audio driver Realtek Audio Manager. I can "retask" the mic port to be headphone, but when I do, it recognizes it speakers instead of headphone. minor inconvenience I know, but I still would like to know the best way to fix this. Also I don't really use a mic.
