Windows 10 laptop's headphone jack just stopped working for no discernible reason. speaker audio is fine, headphones work on everything else, but sound does not come through my headset when plugged into the jack.

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 09:27 PM PST

I'll make it as short and sweet as possible:

    • Downloaded the huge-ass Windows 10 "Fall (fuck the) Creators update" or whatever. Audio worked fine before it even though my laptop died half-way through updating a month ago.

    • Also downloaded and opened "Music Maker" from the latest Humble Software Bundle, which is when it stopped working, as the program opened.

    • I've tried just about every solution under the sun - headsets/headphones/earbuds don't show up in playback devices even though I've enabled seeing disabled/unused playback devices, tried reinstalling/updating Realtek HD drivers, tried troubleshooting and restarting my laptop at least 3 times, tried messing with Realtek's settings, tried messing with Music Maker's output settings, tried reinstalling/updating my headset's drivers (my Hyper-X Cloud headset doesn't have drivers and cheap earbuds also aren't working in the jack), tried disabling and re-enabling my Realtek HD audio device, no results.

I'm desperate at this point. I know it's not a headset problem, like I said, I tested multiple different headsets/earbuds and nothing worked on the jack but they all worked on my android phone just fine.

EDIT: I solved the problem but I'm leaving this post up in case other people have a similar problem: it took a bit of time for windows to stop freaking out, but I went to device manager, uninstalled my Realtek HD audio, and rebooted my laptop to allow it to redownload it.

Yesterday my laptop (MSI GT73VR) qwas fine, I put it in my laptop bag and qwent home from qwork. I got to qwork this morning, booted it up, and there's something a bit off qwith my keyboard, I think you can probably guess qwhat it is.

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 04:56 AM PST

Nothing got spilled on it, it didn't have any impacts firmer than "the laptop bag being set on the seat of my Jeep" and then "the laptop bag set on the floor by the front door qwhen I got home"

Noqw any W or Q keypress (I had to backspace that to clarify there..) gets me QW no matter qwhich I press. If I press and hold either I get qwwwwwwwww.

It's still under qwarranty so if it's something hardqware I can send it in for repairs (And it has other issues, but qwith the video card/screen, that it's likely going in for soon anyhoqw, so it isn't a huge deal to get them to look at tqwo things) but if anyone can figure out a fix that doesn't involve opening it that can help me out in the short term before I can get it in a box and on its qway home to MSI that'd be great.

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: I got home and took the air compressor to it. Oh my god the dust, I've only oqwned this for a feqw months, hoqw is there so much dust.... but no dice, keys are still funky. I put in an RMA reqwuest qwith MSI.

Oh also the touchpad doesn't qwork noqw and the Fn keys aren't responding so I don't knoqw if that's a simple driver error and I had the touchpad turned off and it stayed off but I don't care enough to look into that tonight

    Steam being blocked by Xfinity

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 06:14 PM PST

Got a new router that uses this app, and one of the options is labeled "Protective browsing" when i use it it blocks some of the steam formatting like Headers, fonts, footers, images (so basically it only shows normal black text and hyperlinked text in times new roman) but so far only noticed on like community (profiles, groups, community hubs, etc) and the steam store. But when i turn it off it works just fine. Is there any way we can like flag steam as safe so it doesnt block it but also keep "Protective Browsing" from potential malware and such?

Link to what it looks like is https://imgur.com/a/WLftu Note* it has the metro steam skin.

[PC - Windows 10] SSD suddenly disappeared, can't boot OS from it and isn't recognized in BIOS/Disk Management

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 02:34 AM PST

Gonna start from the beginning to give some context. Sorry for the long post. (Samsung 850 EVO - 500GB)

Tried logging into my PC. PC was sleeping before I tried. It just halted at my lockscreen wallpaper, never letting me input my PIN/password to actually get into PC. After 10 mins, decided to hold power button to shut it off. I turned it on again, but instead of loading up Windows, it went straight to the BIOS. Noticed that my SSD wasn't showing up in the BIOS. Tried new SATA/power cables and different SATA/power ports to no avail. Tried power cycling my SSD, which did nothing as well. Tried reformatting the drive with a Windows 10 installation USB drive but plugging in my SSD causes the PC to run really slow to the point where it takes 20 mins just to boot into the installation USB drive. After taking an excruciating amount of time to get to the part where it lists my drives, it shows up as an "Unallocated Disk" but I'm unable to format it/install Windows on to it. ('Delete' option is greyed out and 'New' option results in a message that says it can't make a new partition in SSD) So I decided to install Windows on to an old HDD I had lying around and I plugged my SSD into a hot swappable SATA port after loading up the OS in the old HDD. Then I tried to format the disk there, but I couldn't find it in Disk Management. It was recognized in Device manager though. Dunno if this helps but I bought the drive a year ago (May 2016)...

So that's the farthest I got. I honestly don't know what to do now other than try returning it, but apparently Samsung has a terrible RMA process in Canada, so if I could avoid having to do that, that'd be awesome.

Also, I'm not very familiar with Linux, but I'm willing to try it out if I need to.

TLDR; SSD disappeared, can't format even though PC recognizes it in Device Manager

Cat jumped on my keyboard while I was video editing, touchpad no longer working

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 10:11 PM PST

So I was video editing and my cat jumped on my laptop and something she did shut off the touchpad. I have an HP EliteBook 8440p with Windows 10. I've tried rebooting the laptop, the touchpad works fora couple of minutes before a logo appears on the screen with the touchpad with a slash mark through it and that sound that you hear when a USB device gets unplugged plays. I've tried going into my computer's mouse and touchpad settings, there's no option to re enable it. Double tapping the top left corner does nothing.

I was getting close to finishing the video, too. And I've been spending the past hour trying to figure this out.

Kindle Fire HD8 Prime Music Issues

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 04:08 AM PST

    Hello all,

Just got a Kindle Fire HD8.

Everything seems to be working but there's one exception.

If you scroll to the music tab the music app will not boot at all.

At first it was opening but not displaying any content. So I went into settings cleared cache and data and now the app just doesn't open at all.

OS is fully updated and tried updating Music via Apptoide.

Anyone got any ideas or possible solutions?

    Thanks in advance! :)

My monitor occasionally flickers when a second display is connected

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 04:04 AM PST

Basically my monitor (Acer XB240H 1080p 144Hz) works normally until I enable my second display (a 4K TV running at 60fps). If I do that, the Acer monitor will flicker once every few seconds or sometimes even a minute or so. It tends to happen more when I'm doing something like moving the mouse or scrolling weirdly enough. It might be a very minor problem but it's really annoying me and I can't find any way to fix it. I'm on Windows 10 and have a Geforce 1080ti GPU. Can anyone help please?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 05:24 PM PST

This probably has something to do with temp files getting stored, but am not quite sure.

    Any help?

    Router lying?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 03:52 AM PST

Okay, so we have this old cisco router, n120wrt or something. It says 10/100mbit.
I know, that our data plan is 100mbit, and that is 12,6MB/s. When I connect a device to the modem it goes up to that speed, but our router only gives us 2.6. Why??????

How to set a keyboard key to perform a mouse click?

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 03:51 AM PST

Is there an option to move the mouse cursor over something as normal, but then press a key on the keyboard to click it instead of the mouse button? I tried the Ease of Access settings in Windows 10 but couldn't get it to work.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 03:47 AM PST

So I usually get around 170FPS in CS:GO but whenever I move my mouse, it drops to 120. What could be the cause of this?

    Specs: i3 2120 @ 3.3GHz MSI GT 1030 4GB DDR3 RAM

I heard that it is because of something because of stij.exe, but I can't find it in my Task Manager. Please help :/

I'm currently using the methods listed in this article. So far no good.

Any suggestions? I haven't updated drivers, did nothing with the BIOS, checked for updates but obviously there's no internet connection so I can't.

Picked up a virus while torrenting, can't log into my computer now.

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 03:44 AM PST

While I was torrenting I picked up a virus on my computer. When I realized it I downloaded Malwarebytes and Hitman and ran full scans to remove any part of it and after that I restarted my computer. I then tried to log into my computer I typed in my PIN and it didn't go through so I restarted it once again only to find myself at a blank screen staring at one of the wallpapers Microsoft has preset. I can't login, my WiFi is down and every time I hit the power button in the bottom right my screen refreshes and I'm at square one. I tried entering safe mode by pressing F8 during start up but it didn't work, along with pressing SHIFT and restart. I would like to do a fresh install of windows 10. Any help is appreciated!

Periodic modem wifi problems every other week, needed a modem reset to make it work again.

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 11:19 PM PST

Cable Modem: Arris Surfboard SBG6580, ISP: Spectrum, customer owned device.

It seems every other week my modem's wifi will stop working and the only way to fix this is to reset the modem via the reset button in the back of the modem. This is seen on all of my connected devices, 3 at the moment, phone, ipad, fire tv.

Ive had this modem since May 2015, This may have been happening longer but has been noticeable in the last 3 months after subscribing to streaming tv service.

Only wifi is affected, I can still internet on ethernet connected devices.

Already have a Spectrum owned modem ready to be activated(they sent it to me when I switched from TWC to Spectrum a year ago.) and am looking at wifi routers should I need to replace my modem.

I have hard reset the modem maybe a month ago and this still happens.

Headphone extender not detecting mic with splitter

    Posted: 25 Dec 2017 03:03 AM PST

Sorry to disturb anyone on Christmas day, but this has been annoying me and I can't seem to fix it.

I'm using Philips Fidelio X2 headphones, but instead of the wire that came with them, I've connected the V-MODA BoomPro microphone. However, the cable with this is too short.

Thus, I've connected the end of the mic cable to a 3.5mm extension cable. That 3.5mm extension cable is then connected to a splitter which is connected to the green and pink ports on my PC.

When I connect the mic cable directly to the splitter, I can hear audio and my mic works. However, when I connect it in the way described above, I can only hear audio- and the mic doesn't work.

What is going wrong here and how can I fix it? For the record, Windows detects the mic but it doesn't pick up anything. Am I just setting it up wrong? Do I need the splitter?
