This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Is a 12100f enough for a 3070?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 10:08 AM PDT

What would be the perfect cpu to pair with a 3070? I was thinking 12400, 12600, 5600x but saw some folks suggesting to pair a 12100 with 3070. Would the pairing of a 12100 with a 3070 bottleneck the gpu?

Do I have to buy an Anti Static Wrist Wrap

You helped my daughter now it's my turn

    Posted: 26 May 2022 11:22 PM PDT

I'm a 56 year old woman. My husband has always built my PCs but many years ago I bought a Mac. When it gave out, I didn't have money to get myself a computer so I took hand-me-down laptops from family. I miss having my own computer. Now that we are doing pretty well financially. I want to build my own computer for the first time. A little about my wants and needs: I do like to game. I play Final Fantasy online and I have Steam account but I rarely game because old laptops suck and are so slow. I also am an artist and enjoy digital art. My budget is flexible because I told my husband I would buy items piece by piece. I will need monitors and all peripherals. Without killing my bank account and still having a cool set-up, where should I start?

About to build your first PC? Come see what it was like for me. A veteran? Come laugh at me. This was my first build experience.

    Posted: 26 May 2022 07:44 PM PDT

Get the build out of the way:

Mobo: Asus Prime Z690-p Wifi D4
    CPU: i7 12700k
    Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black
    RAM: Team T-Force Vulcan 32GB 3600 Mhz CL18
    GPU: Gigabyte Eagle OC 3070
    SSD: 1TB WD Black SN850
    SSD2: 1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus
    SSD3: 1 TB Samsung QVO
    PSU: MSI MPG A-GF 80+ Gold 850w
    Case: Lian Li Lancool 215

Time taken: 5 hours and 13 minutes from opening first box to to POST, including break time and time contemplating why I was doing this to myself, and snacks.
Times I pressed the power button when nothing happened: 6
    Verbal "What the fuck"s: Uncountable.

I followed this video from techsource: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXaLc9AYIcg

I was super nervous before this build. Never done anything like this before and was convinced I was going to break something. I had all the parts for two days before I built up the courage to do anything about it.

The process: First accident was I stabbed myself with the motherboard taking it out of it's static-free packaging. Didn't realise they were so sharp and the way it was packaged made it impossible to take it out without touching a bit of the back. What followed was attaching the CPU which I was most nervous about. That lever on the side you really need to push more than I thought and I felt like I was going to break something. That didn't happen, though. The CPU fell into place a lot easier than I thought.

NVME SSD: Was easy. Have done this before with Laptops and it's the exact same. Just plug it in and screw it down. Stupid Moment: Was screwing down the SSD and noticed it was bending. That's not right, I thought. Turns out, Mobo comes with a standoff that goes below the m2 attachment screw. Felt stupid.

Next: RAM. Was easy. Literally lego. My problem was that every video I watched beforehand said to undo both clips on either side of the RAM housing. On my Mobo, only one side opens. I spent a good 10 minutes trying to work out why the other side didn't open. Mobo manual indicates only one side opens. Felt stupid again.

Cooler time. I looked up a separate video for this because the NH-D15 looks intimidating as fuck. I used this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuaPF_aUa9g. It was still difficult. I applied too much thermal paste i'm sure but cooling has been excellent so i'm not too worried. Don't overthink this part. Just put a bit in the middle of the CPU a bit bigger than the size of a pea. I used about 3 peas and it was too much. I was expecting the actual cooler install to be more difficult than it was based on complaints from other videos. The only complaint I had was installing the LGA1700 mounting bracket. I spent an hour on this, and this is where the majority of the "what the fuck's" came from. Installed the plate on the back of the mobo so the pins can come through, and my mounting brackets wouldn't fit. It wouldn't fit the holes it was meant to. I tried everything. An hour later I realise on the back of the mobo, there's two holes for pins for mounting brackets. I used the inside holes when I needed the outside holes. Magically everything slipped into place. But nobody mentioned this - not the Cooler installation instructions, not the Mobo manual, not either of the videos I watched. Nobody mentioned this could be a possibility so I didn't think of it. There's two holes. Felt stupid again, although I think this is less my fault and more bad instructions.

At this point I installed the Mobo. Was easy, although heavy because of the gigantic cooler I had installed. This made it nerve-wracking getting the mobo onto the standoffs without scraping the back of the mobo. The final screw in the top-left corner of the case behind the cooler was a DOOZY. Glad I had an extended magnetic screwdriver.

Case fans: My case came with two 140ml front fans and one 120ml back fan already installed and plugged into a fan header at the back. All I had to do was attach the fan header to the PSU, but that happened later, at the PSU installation but props to Lian Li. One less fiddly job.

PSU Install: This was the worst part for me, and what ended up causing the most problems. I had way more cables than I needed and sorting them out was overwhelming for a noob. It's a fully modular PSU so it was bonkers with about triple the amount of cables than I needed. If i could do the first time again, I would go with a non-modular PSU. Or semi-modular. Biggest thing about this process is that these cables need to be pushed in HARD. WAY harder than you think, at least for me. And this was the main problem later on, one of the cables wasn't pushed in far enough. The ATX Power cable on the PSU side kept coming out so everything would get no power. I had to wrap a towel around it and JAM it in, because the amount of force required to get it in was too much for the tips of my fingers without pretty severe stabbing pain. I am fairly sure this is due to the fairly low quality of the cables I used, which felt cheap as hell. I definitely would spend more on a PSU if this was less of a problem with other ones. PSU installation itself was easy. 4 Screws.

Cable Management: I didn't bother a lot with this at first, but i'll probably go back now that I got it to POST, but it's not terrible from the front, but the back panel is a total Medusa.

Plugging everything in: This was fairly simple and things go where they need to go. But it is FUCKING STUPID that in 2022 we are still fiddling with cables as small as the single pin system panel cables (power button, reset switch etc). This needs to be fixed ASAP. This can't be the most efficient way of doing this. This was one of the most fiddly parts, and I don't even have fat fingers. If you have some sausage fingers you'll struggle here. The video also said these went into a JFP-1 header but my mobo doesn't have anything like that and the manual calls it a system panel so originally i had plugged them into the only other 9 pin slot (i didn't turn it on). Do you know which one?. Everything else was fairly easy except plugging in the CPU cable next to the obese cooler I installed. That was difficult. Everything else, easy.

GPU install: Easiest part. Probably easier than RAM. Took 20 seconds. Nothing difficult.

So I got to this point, plugged the power cable in, flicked the switch, pressed the power button and....... nothing. Not lights, no fans, nothing. Weird. Checked the PSU cables, and my outlet swithces. All fine. No power still. Weird. Opened up the case again and made sure all the cables were plugged into the motherboard properly. They were. I even unplugged and replugged the system panel plugs and reseated the RAM. Several times, nothing from the power button. Uninstalled the PSU and checked - the ATX mobo power had become unplugged from the PSU side. This is where i discovered just how much force this cable needed into my PSU which seemed crazy as it was so much more than the others (yes, it was the right way). It eventually went in and the clip popped over the lip and.... instant POST.

So really the only problem I had was with a cable and everything else was relatively smooth but still.

What problems did you have with your first build? How close was your experience to mine?

    How not to waste $1600?

    Posted: 25 May 2022 08:43 PM PDT

Edit 3: To everyone saying I should sell it, or that it wasn't smart to get if I wasn't gonna use it, you are neither answering my post or being helpful. I understand where you're coming from but it is only gonna make other people that find this post feel worse for doing something that they wanted to do.

TLDR: I built my first PC about a month ago and have barely used it since, what are some of the infinite things I could do with it?

About a month ago, I put together my first computer build, mainly to game on, but there's so much you could do with it. I was very excited and nervous to do it but I made it through and have a great machine. The only problem is I have barely touched it. I use it here and there to browse but I barely play games anymore. I've noticed that it's partially from lack of motivation but that's something I'm changing.

    I know that there's an insane amount of things that you can do with a machine like this, but I don't know exactly what, and even if I did, I wouldn't know where to start learning. I have basic computer and video game knowledge and that's about it. What sorts of things do you do with your PC? What's something you've been dying to teach somebody? I'm open to whatever it is, I just need to actually use this so I didn't waste all that money. These are some things that I'm interested in but have no idea where to start;

App development Game development (mobile/cross platform) Home server Home automation Coding/programming in general Web development And more than I can think about right now...

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help. I appreciate it.

    Edit: Thank you to everyone that gave helpful comments, and I understand those that left less than helpful comments. A few things to clarify to give better perspective;

    • The title was mainly to catch peoples eye, which worked. I know that this PC is an investment and the fact that it will last me plenty of years is proof it's not a waste. The main reason I made this post was for me *and everyone else who runs into this common problem* to get ideas of what we can use our PCs for. I want this to be a place for PC builders to get ideas of how to use their new PC.
    • The reason I don't play games is the reason I don't do a lot of things. I've been in a bit of a depressive state but I've been working on that separately and actually forcing myself to do things will help.
    • I did not build what I needed, I built what I wanted***.*** At the time it was mainly to play games but I also understand that if it can play games it can do plenty of things and I want to use it for more. My problem, like I imagine others face as well, is that I don't know all of those things. For example, I didn't know that AI made art was a thing until a few days ago, and I have no idea where or how to start learning how to do it.
    • I know that the PC I built is overkill for 95% of things normal people do like researching and web browsing, and the oddly prominent comment thread of adult uses haha, but that doesn't mean we can't still do it.

Edit 2: If it helps people feel better, I didn't buy it outright. I found deals, and used credit cards so I can pay over time. You don't need $1500 to build something similar, you just need to be able to make payments. Do your own research and make sure you can afford it, and always look out for hidden fees and blah blah blah. I'm not your parent but some people are upset with how I use my money.

    Upgrading RAM

    Posted: 26 May 2022 11:38 PM PDT

So my pc currently has 8gb of RAM, and I want to upgrade it to 16gb, but I need some advice on how to do this. I know buying 2 fresh sticks of 8gb each is probably the simplest option, but it's a lot more expensive!

At the moment I have 2 4gb sticks in it, so I believe buying 2 more 4gb sticks (as I have 4 slots) would be suitable. But I'm worried as I heard that mixing and matching RAM can sometimes cause problems? And the same goes for compatibility with the motherboard. So my question is, should I go for it and buy some RAM that I can find (for example, on the Currys website), or should I spend more money and just get 16gb of Corsair RAM?

It's been a while, but I think my motherboard is the intel B560. Advice appreciated, many thanks :)

I have a few NAS newbie questions, I want a NAS to act as a shared media drive over LAN. Looking at a Synology NAS, or would a JBOD box be better?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 11:57 PM PDT

It would NOT be used as a back-up method, instead it would be used solely as a means to have a shared media drive on the LAN. Would a Synology NAS be overkill? Should I look at a JBOD box with ethernet instead?

Looking at Synology on YouTube you need to do some initial configuration in an admin panel running on the internal hardware to set it up. Is the included admin panel that you need to configure simply there so the hardware in the box understands the file structure so it can facilitate file transfer?

What I'm trying to get at is: if I were to later take the HDD out of the Synology NAS box and plug it directly into a PC (either internally via SATA, or externally via a dock), would Windows still be able to access the files normally?

RX 6600 vs RTX 3060 at this price range:

    Posted: 26 May 2022 11:51 PM PDT

    RX 6600:$338

    RTX 3060: $478

I know they're rather expensive. But this is just how the prices are in my country. I'm only gonna plan on playing Elden Ring for now. If I buy the RX 6600, I would have the money to get a better CPU as well (R5 5600 compared to R5 3600)

EDIT: These are second hand prices btw

Gone over budget. What would you recommend I change on this build?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 02:31 PM PDT

Hi all, I am hoping to build a pc in the next month or so and had a £3,000 budget however I have gone over it a bit! What would you suggest I change on this build to bring the total cost down a bit?

The main use for this new pc will be for gaming (RDR2, Ark, Squad etc) and I'm not too fussed about overclocking.

    Thanks so much in advance!

    Ryzen 9 5900x 4800mhz ok?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 10:00 PM PDT

So I am playing the new sniper elite (5) and my cpu listed in title 5900x is running at 4600 to 4800mhz at less than 70 degrees is this something I should worry about? I just installed it I have a evga rtx3080 that runs fine with it just want to make sure I'm not shortening the lifespan by extreme numbers. I assume it's stressing it because the cooler I have (DEEPCOOL AK620) is cranking mostly full when in big areas etc). But yea just want to make sure this is normal and is not going to cause issues sooner than later as I want my stuff to last. Also highly recommend ak620 I even watched a video comparing it to a noctua cooler of equal size and it just beat it and it's 30 usd less so I can't complain it was the only cooler large enough they had when I purchased it at micro center. Cheers n thanks for any input.

Unable to Boot From SSD After Installing Windows

    Posted: 26 May 2022 09:23 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am trying to put a clean install of Windows on my NVMe drive using a Windows 10 Installation Media Tool. After the installation process when it says it is going to restart, it simply boots back up to the first screen of the Installation Tool. If I unplug the external drive and restart, it just boots back up to the BIOS.

The drive shows up in the BIOS, but it does not give me the option to boot to it unless I enable CSM mode. It then shows up, but tells me to put in a bootable drive or whatever after restarting. It will not let me install Windows on the drive without CSM mode disabled.

I've tried absolutely everything and am desperate to get this working. I know for a fact that the SSD works just fine; it is also the only drive connected. Any and all help would be appreciated.

    3070ti or 6900xt

    Posted: 26 May 2022 09:45 PM PDT

    I can either get a.

-MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GAMING X TRIO 8G or a

-Sapphire NITRO+ AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB

and the prices are really close; I know that the 6900 xt has more raw power but there a number of concerns:

1: Is that particular model (Sapphire nitro+) of the 6900 xt good in cooling and build quality? (I want to keep it for 4+ years)

2: Do AMD GPUs still have driver/crashing issues?

3: Are AMD GPUs weak in rendering compared to ones of Nvidia? e.g. in the program "Blender"

Sorry if some of the questions are stupid; I'm not an expert when it comes to amd gpus. Thanks.

Acer Nitro XV272U (Pbmiiprzx VS Vbmiiprx)?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 09:11 PM PDT

I've been looking at the stickies and posts regarding best options for a budget good-spec monitor. I'm gathering one of the best options for value is the Acer Nitro XV272U, but there are several different models.

On Amazon right now, the XV272U Pbmiiprzx model is ~$340, and the Vbmiiprx is ~$280, but has some different specs (better?) such as OC refresh of 170hz (vs 144), .5ms response (vs 1ms), AMD FreeSync (vs G-Sync).

Does anybody more knowledgable about these know any reason why might prefer spending the extra money for the Pbmiiprzx. The Vbm doesn't have a single review on Amazon at the moment, which makes me wary.

    Upgrade from i7 6700k

    Posted: 26 May 2022 11:15 PM PDT

    Hello,

Ive been using my i7 for a long long time now,

And I am actually not sure if and to what I should Upgrade which kinda gives a good Performance boost.

I still have a rtx 2070 super and 64gb ram and actually its fine with me.

    I don't play 4k, I don't use high settings I just go for fps.

Also im a kvm User which means I play via Linux on a windows vm.

And I really love that I have igpu due to my linux using igpu and my vm guests use my main gpu, but its not really necessary if the Performance difference is really big, I still have a old 1060 Laying around which I could use for my Linux host.. but for that I need a new PSU aswell...

My Budget would be idk around 500 euros including everything...

All I need I think is probably New cpu, mobo and maybe psu...

Thank you guys in advance :d

    AIO for 5950x

    Posted: 26 May 2022 09:00 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Just after your thoughts on what size AIO I should utilize on a 5950x running at stock speeds?

The case I am using is not to good for air flow (Fractal Design Define xl configured in storage layout).

Reason I ask Is I don't want to over spend but am also a lil concerned about temps with the front door shut especially during Australian summers.

On a side note, thoughts on a 1000w psu for the 5950 cpu, 3080 series gpu and 6 10tb w.d red hdd's? Would that be more than sufficient to power the system?

    Thanks in advanced.
