Posted: 03 May 2022 10:23 AM PDT I mean, it's pretty random to have the file manager app to also double as a core component of Windows. This has pretty much been the case since Windows 95, when the shell as we know it was introduced. The shell was explorer.exe, which was also the file explorer. To this day, this has been the case. In fact, Windows 10/11 rely heavily on it, as without it, UWP apps seem to break. But my question is why the file manager? Why is the File Explorer also the shell (or vice versa)? Is there a special reason these two were combined? Thanks for any responses, have a great day :D [link] [comments]

Coming back to windows after 10+ years using Linux Posted: 03 May 2022 08:20 AM PDT So, because of work I need to start using windows again, details are not important, Im a software developer, Im used to awesomewm as a window manager, I think it can be somewhat replaced by Fancy Zones, and other power toys things look useful too, and I also catched word of chocolatey as a kind of package manager. So the question, any other tools programs you can tell me that would make my transition/life on windows easier? [link] [comments]

Windows 11 de-bloating for User Interface. Advice? Posted: 03 May 2022 07:16 PM PDT
This user interface basically takes the worst things from macOS and GNOME and removes the ease of Win10. Ugh... How did Microsoft employees let this ship? [link] [comments]

What's going on with MSN News as of late? Posted: 03 May 2022 02:48 PM PDT Over the past two weeks or so, MSN News has apparently decided I'm so obsessed over celebrities and royal families that I could only see tabloid-quality celeb news on my start page. While there are still some "normal" news in the main carousel, the rest of the page is filled to the brim with news like "Famous Celebrities You DIDN'T KNOW Were Related" and "The Most SHOCKING Royal Deaths". I've double-checked my news preferences on MSN and it doesn't look like I've enabled celeb news - yet it seems like MSN really, really wants me to know what haircut did Princess Diana have on the day of her death. Did Microsoft acquire /r/savedyouaclick and accidentally made it its sole news provider? [link] [comments]

Any devs here to explain why windows changes boot priority or overwrites grub when you dual boot? Posted: 03 May 2022 11:55 AM PDT I didn't realize an OS could change bios settings but turns out windows can. Windows doesn't change boot priority when USB is first but it does when linux is above windows. Any devs want to discuss the mechanics? [link] [comments]
I heard You can't use recovery software of SSDs, unlike HDDs? Posted: 03 May 2022 02:08 PM PDT so i have a laptop with an nvme SSD as my main drive. I was thinking of adding a second drive for data drive. I Was going to add another NVME for the speed, however i heard that you cannot use data recovery software on ssds because of the way it stores data and the way is it designed? If that's the case, i would have to settle for a slower HDD as the data drive, just in case anything happens, i can still run recovery software to get back data Edit: when i say recovery software, i mean like Recuva, photo rec, easus data recovery, etc...not Backup programs [link] [comments]

Link to windows (Copy & Paste) Posted: 03 May 2022 01:20 AM PDT The Link to Windows/Phone Link has been a great addition to productivity using both a Samsung phone with a Windows laptop. The features available is awesome from screen sharing, to notifications to calls and messages and there is less need to having the phone close by for better focus on task at hand in the laptop. The most important feature that exists on this integration is the copy-paste function. This is the most useful feature that demolishes the barrier between phone and laptop, the glue of an ecosystem. However, in my experience, it works only one way. I can copy from my phone and paste on my windows without problem. I cannot copy from my laptop and paste on my windows, which is a great disappointment. My search for a solution indicates that it should work both ways and every imaginable solution has not worked - perform a clean uninstall on both OS. The search for redemption continues yet I grow weary on this hopeless journey and I concede defeat as I approach my fellow redditors for help. For reference, I use a S21 5G 128/8 Exynos OneUi4.1 with a Windows 11 Laptop. [link] [comments]
Windows 10 kiosk mode with Edge browser an tab rotation Posted: 03 May 2022 12:10 AM PDT Hello, think some of you know the so called kiosk mode in Windows 10( Set up a single-app kiosk on Windows 10/11 - Configure Windows | Microsoft Docs ) We want to use the kiosk mode for a few monitoring PCs with big displays connected to it in an industrial hangar. Currently we have 3 different monitoring dashboards from different monitoring solutions. Which means we need to open different 3 tabs. At the moment we are using a standard user which gets automatically logged in, opens Edge with a tab rotation extension installed. But we want to use something safer... for this we thought about the above mentioned kiosk mode. But it looks like we can't install/use any extention in this kiosk mode browser? Maybe someone know another good solution? [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 May 2022 02:36 PM PDT Hey guys, [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2022 02:31 PM PDT So just started a new job working from home... And the computer they provided me with is LOUD. By that I mean I have volume at 1% and it's still a bit too loud for my liking. I tried googling how to fix this and the only thing I can find that would be applicable would be to download a third party program to regulate volume (Which obviously I don't want to do on a work PC, especially when working with sensitive data). Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 May 2022 02:11 PM PDT I've been using MS Edge for several months with no problems until about a week ago when it started crashing for no apparent reason. I've tried installing it several times since. It downloads, but when it starts installing I get the Error code 80 that installation failed every time. I uninstalled Edge and tried reinstalling it, but that didn't work either. I also restarted my computer which made no difference. I use W8.1. Thanks for any replies. [link] [comments]

Suggested Solutions I've Tried So Far:
The only verifiable way to fix the issue is to put my PC to sleep and wake it up. I don't shutdown often so it's not the end of the world, but it is a problem that I'd like to fix nonetheless. [link] [comments]
