Forcing G-Sync/VRR on windowed applications [Arch/KDE/X11]

    Posted: 28 May 2022 05:23 PM PDT

I have no issues using G-Sync with fullscreen games but can't seem to find a way to get it work with a particular game that I play (OSRS/Runelite). I booted up a Windows partition and confirmed that its possible there as the Nvidia control panel has a flag for it.

Is there anyway to force VRR/G-sync with windowed or borderless fullscreen games?

Unable to set global Bash variables from inside a function

    Posted: 28 May 2022 02:23 PM PDT

Hi guys, attempting to use getopts to process command line switches passed to a Bash script:

    #!/bin/bash declare RECURSIVE_DIRECTORY_SEARCH="false"; declare VERBOSE_SUMMARY="false"; process_switches() { while getopts "rv" option do case "$option" in r) RECURSIVE_DIRECTORY_SEARCH="true";; v) VERBOSE_SUMMARY="true";; esac done } process_switches

This doesn't work, and I'm not sure why.

If I ditch the function encapsulation - it works.

I think what's happening is that this function is setting new variables with the same names at function level scope, then when the function ends - they're deleted.

Hence, it's not really acknowledging the global level variables at the beginning of the script, but I'm not sure why.

what linux distribution works best for you?

    Posted: 28 May 2022 05:32 PM PDT

For the last 2 months I've tried zorinos, Ubuntu, manjaro kde, manjaro xfce, manjaro gnome, kubuntu, popos, fedora, linux mint, arcolinux, arch Linux and none of them seem to workout for me.

my favorite so far has been manjaro xfce but when I try to update the system I keep getting the error about some pgp key.. the same for the other arch based distros. I updated the keyring and it was still the same. on kde it worked fine but the one main thing I do on my laptop I couldn't do.. which is to play Minecraft I installed every java, jdk, jre and the launcher I use which is tlauncher would just crash, does anyone here know a good free/cracked Minecraft launcher for Linux? with the Ubuntu distros I get into Minecraft but I play for a bit and then it just crashes shortly after. What am I doing wrong? I can't seem to go back to windows so I'm stuck jumping between distros every few days.

I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad yoga 12 pro.

    Nautilus Copy/Paste broken

    Posted: 28 May 2022 12:57 PM PDT

    Hi all!

Recently started having a problem in Nautilus (up-to-date Manjaro Gnome) where I can't copy, cut or paste files within Nautilus. Either ctrl+c/x or just rightclick and selecting copy doesn't do anything, I can never even paste from the right click menu. Only thing that does work is selecting copy to... from the right click menu but that's really inconvenient. Copy/paste works in basically all other apps like terminal, text editor, office, etc. I tried to reinstall nautilus from the pamac GUI with no result.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Dolphin Explorer Search Returns Nothing everytime..

    Posted: 28 May 2022 08:51 AM PDT

I am trying to use the search feature for my music libraries... I click the search box, type in the artist or song I am looking for... and I am certain its there.. I copy and past the artist name, and the song same from the file to see if it will find it. However it returns nothing every time..

I am currently running Debian Kernel 5.16, I never really used this feature much as I am pretty organized with my most of my folders and filers. however This would be super nice to figure out how to get it to work correctly.

is newer kernel uses more ram ?

    Posted: 28 May 2022 12:07 PM PDT

i have just installed alpinelinux 3.16 and realized that is uses ~ 412MB on cool boot (with xorg and monsterwm and st to run free -m command ) but when i used to install the version 3.15 of alpinelinux it used just ~ 230MB of ram on cool boot (with xorg and monsterwm and st to run free -m command )

it is a newer version of the distro so it uses newer kernel

not only on alpine but it is on other distro like debian and other ?

is there any thing that i can do with that ? is that normal ?

maybe i am missing something after installing all these distro?

imagine after one year of kernel updates the system will use 900MB on cool boot

Best way to sync files between multiple devices.

    Posted: 28 May 2022 07:39 AM PDT

I currently use a laptop and a desktop for taking notes for my profession. I use Mint for its stability on both, although I am in my distro-hopping phase with my desktop right now. I generate a ton of .odt files from note taking, and I need to ensure parity with all notes across both devices and my phone.

My current method of doing this is to use warpinator to transfer the files from my laptop to my desktop, where I plug in my phone. I then use rsync to compare my warpinator folder to my notes folders on desktop and phone.

This is the best method that I have come up with. Can anyone tell me if there are problems with my method or if there is a more efficient one out there?

Manjaro Plasma (KDE) not showing in on my pc bios and boot screen

    Posted: 27 May 2022 11:46 PM PDT

Hello! I am trying to boot up Plasma on my PC with this flash drive that I flashed with etcher I'm not even gonna talk about all of the issues the flash drive had for some reason with formatting but a video helped it out. But basically I'm migrating from windows on an Acer Nitro 5 and every time I go to the boot menu the flash drive doesn't show up despite me following the exact steps of this youtube tutorial. Any reasons on why this is happening?

I need some guidance and suggestions.

    Posted: 28 May 2022 10:42 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm using EndeavourOS with KDE playma for couple of months now but I'm still a noob in linux world. I configured my enviroment to my needs and I don't want to loose that :)

    I have few questions.

    1. Soon I will buy me a new notebook and I'd like that notebook will be a "mirror" of my desktop. If I install all needed programs on notebook and then copy home folder from my deskop... will this transfer all tweaks and settings I changed on my KDE enviroment and other programs I use?
    2. Currently I backup only my home folder, is wise to backup something else to restore OS faster in case of some failure? If I'm not mistaken, home folder holds only config files of programs I use and my personal files.
    3. I preffer to use Krusader over Dolphin. For my work I need to connect to various servers over sftp. Is there a way to create some kind of shortcut that will work in krusader and dolphin? I can easily create a bookmark to SSH location in Krusader but I can't use that in Dolphin. I can create a shortcut to SSH in dolphin with extension ".desktop" but that doesn't work in Krusader because Krusader opens it with text editor.

help with gnome builder and Rust

    Posted: 28 May 2022 08:47 AM PDT

I have started a new project on my laptop. My laptop is running fedora 36 and gnome builder as a flatpak. When I opened a Rust project for the first time it asked to install all the SDK tools for Rust automatically. that was nice and good.
Now I am at my desktop PC running Pop!_OS 22.04, also with Gnome Builder 42.1 and i think the popup asking to install Rust SDKs never came. I also uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still it just does not show up.

I also googled a lot already but I just got more and more confused.

How can I identify why certain thumbnails aren't getting generated in Thunar? Preferably I would love to run tumbler in some verbose mode on a certain folder to see, what it does and doesn't.

    Posted: 28 May 2022 03:57 AM PDT

I have the issue, that not all thumbnails get correctly generated in Thunar. Especially pdf just doesn't work at all (even though it is enabled in tumbler.rc and tumbler-plugins-extra is installed). In other programs like nemo, it works fine (and after it got generated in nemo, Thunar just uses that picture).

So I would like to see what tumbler does to each file in a folder. What it identifies the files as and which thumbnailer it decides to use and if there are any error messages etc.

Is there any way to call tumbler from the command line to generate thumbnails for a specific folder? I couldn't find anything like that online.

    need help with partitions

    Posted: 28 May 2022 07:18 AM PDT

I'm new to Linux. While installing Ubuntu I faced an issue that had to do with my drivers (unable to read driver), so I tried to manually install Ubuntu but things went wrong and it ended up running super slow on my laptop. What's the proper way of partitioning a 2GB RAM/ 500 GB HDD laptop? Thank you in advance.

    Virtualbox installation issues on Linux

    Posted: 28 May 2022 06:56 AM PDT

I'm trying to install VirtualBox on Fedora 36. I keep getting this issue when installing:

This system is currently not set up to build kernel modules. Please install the Linux kernel "header" files matching the current kernel for adding new hardware support to the system.

I've looked around for a solution, but nothing I've tried installing so far fixes the issue. The installer is no help either as it doesn't hint to any sort of solution.

Is there a way to set a non-printing char as separator for GNU file?

    Posted: 28 May 2022 06:25 AM PDT

    Hi guys, trying to use:

    https://linux.die.net/man/1/file

    with:

-F, --separator separator Use the specified string as the separator between the filename and the file result returned. Defaults to ':'.

Doing something like (separating fields by tab):

    file --mime-type --separator '\t' <file>

But file regards it as literal '\t',

Is it just not possible with GNU file utility, or am I just using the shell incorrectly?

    Thanks

Linux does not boot from USB Drive

    Posted: 28 May 2022 06:13 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm trying to boot Linux Mint / Zorin OS from an USB stick on my Acer Swift 3 SF314-41 (Ryzen 5 3500U), but it's getting stuck on booting/loading screen.

I already tried using different distro, usb sticks, iso boot software, switching safe and fast boot on and off and nothing works.

Do you know what might be causing the issue?
