Samsung S5E9855 is likely Tensor 2/GS201

    Posted: 28 May 2022 08:36 AM PDT

Back in October 2020, Ice Universe tweeted about Samsung developing two SOCs named S5E9925 and S5E9855. 9925 was revealed as the Exynos 2200 and people speculated 9855 would be Tensor 1. But as it turns out, Tensor 1 is 9845, a close relative of Exynos 2100 (9840).

I dug around the Android kernel repo and discovered a commit for Pixel display hardware which adds several files under a new samsung/cal_9855 package. The commit's headline says the following:

drm: samsung: add initial updates for GS201

So I think it's safe to say that 9855 is Tensor 2. To further solidify this assumption, there's also an older package called /samsung/cal_9845 for GS101/Tensor 1 devices.

The model number discrepancy between Tensor 2 and Exynos 2200 might be alarming i.e. Exynos 2200 jumped to 9925 from 9840 while Tensor 2 only jumped to 9855 from 9845. Shouldn't Tensor 2 also have a 99xx number since it's a 2022 SOC? Looking back at Samsung's naming history, a small model number delta can denote a generation change; Exynos 2100 jumped to 9840 from 9830 (Exynos 990). So I would expect Tensor 2 to come with many of the typical 2022 improvements i.e. Cortex X2, A710, A510, Mali G710. If I had to guess, Samsung went with 99xx for Exynos 2200 to denote the huge change in GPU implementation with RDNA2.
