    Powertoys Peek Windows Help

During a hack week at Microsoft, some coworkers and I teamed up and decided to build a lightning fast file preview feature for Windows. We integrated it into Microsoft Powertoys and called it Peek. This is just a prototype, but we would very much like feedback from the community. Cheers!

Why are there so many windows programs like this

    Posted: 07 Apr 2022 01:39 AM PDT

Windows 7, Developer Preview and 10 mixed together fits better for Windows 10 than the box-ish UI used in 10... It just looks good in my perspective.

Looks like the latest update broke File Explorer. All I did was press Ctrl+T...

Are there Tiling Window Manager that works as windows in Visual Studio?

Microsoft really needs to fix this. It honestly feels like they don't give a crap about the Feedback Hub.

Old Windows memory - strange icon (XP or 95)

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:45 PM PDT

I remember digging in system32 files and stumbling upon an icon file, which was this googly eyed cartoon face with a wide smile showing teeth, looked pretty derpy. It seemed to have been built in the system, not an addition for another program, was pixellated rather than the more recent XP design hence thinking it might date back to Win95. Any info?

[EDIT] looked something like that : https://i.imgur.com/PoNHNSY.png

    Disable High-Contrast for certain apps

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 05:23 AM PDT

Hello windows enthusiasts, i found a really good looking high-contrast mode on the internet, but i want to disable it on certain apps because high contrast messes with the interface (im talking about the figma app specifically).

I dont want to disable High Contrast entirely when i open a certain app, i want it to not apply to a specific window basically.

Is it possible to deactivate High contrast for certain apps/services?

Why is paid micro extensions a thing now? (e.x. HEVC Video Extension to play mp4 files)

    Posted: 06 Apr 2022 10:31 AM PDT

Just paid £0.79 for the above extension to play mp4 files I had recorded on my GoPro.

It's not a huge amount of money that's not the problem. I just wonder what else I will have to buy as a model for such a huge player like Microsoft it seems odd to me they're charging such insignificant amounts of money for basic functions.

I just never remember paying for seemingly small but very foundational pieces of software to do basic things like watch mp4 videos?

Since when has this been a thing?

My last computer was a work laptop for years so it was already set up etc.

    Added:

Microsoft are competing against the likes of Apple and Google both of which are making their products as user friendly as possible so that 'anyone' can use them seamlessly. Then you have Microsoft charging 79p for something that feels like it should be included already.

I can imagine someone less tech savvy being completely turned off by this. My iPhone and Google Chrome are set up pretty seamlessly now to fill in contact details, card details etc. and this felt like going back in time.

I've always supported Windows, but this sort of thing makes me think Microsoft aren't taking their competition seriously.

I got an old laptop with activated windows 8.1 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10 with the Media creation tool but it failed so I'm going to use it to make a usb drive to install 10, but will my 8.1 product key still activate the 10 installation?

Auto Brightness: constantly changing, no option to disable

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 03:46 PM PDT

I've disabled it before in windows 10, but after a fresh install of 11, I can't disable 'auto adjust brightness when lighting changes' because the box just isn't there. There's no expansion arrow on the brightness bar at all.

It get's crazy dark every time I open up a game, and even when I'm typing the screen is constantly adjusting brightness because there are variable lights in the room, and it's driving me up a goddamn wall. I just want to have a dark, comfortable room, but still be able to see my screen. I have an HP Pavilion for gaming; is there some sepcific reason that would disable the feature?

Is there a catch with this Office 2021 "lifetime" license deal?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:45 AM PDT

I usually use LibreOffice because it's free and Office licenses are typically very expensive. Also, I refuse to move to a subscription model for office apps.

But I saw this deal today: https://stacksocial.com/sales/microsoft-office-professional-plus-2021-for-windows

$49 for a lifetime license for the Office 2021 suite. What's the catch? It seems too good to be true.

I am NOT associated with Stacksocial or Microsoft. This is not an ad. I just want to know if this deal is legit.

Basic Malware-Free Bloatware-Free Windows Fax App

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:34 AM PDT

I'm looking for a simple, reliable fax application that isn't going to also fill my computer with junk or dual route my fax to China or Belarus.

I need to fax one-page doc to my former city's tax department. This is the first time I've needed to send a fax in probably 3 years and I won't likely need to fax again for another 3 years. . .if ever.

Seems like there are many options out there but it's so hard finding trustworthy reviews these days. The Reddit post I found about eFax (or was it iFax?) only had responses that were from apparent spam profiles. Maybe the software is legit but I didn't love the idea that it was getting friendly comments from fake profiles.

Thanks very much in advance for your help!

(Opinion) Windows 7 or Windows 11

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 06:50 AM PDT

    Hi Windows Users,

I am using Windows 11 at the moment, i have no lag issues in terms of the system, never encounter a bug at the moment. The thing is that i always loved the Windows 7 experience.

I am planning switching again to Windows 7 just because its a windows that was already patched many times in bugs and funcionality in the past years.

Windows 11 is a good concept of modern and easy to work system, but i really miss the legacy experience that we had one Windows 7, all the sytle of the taskbar with the windows Aero, wich was a problem with my computers at the time, because i didnt had a device that runned good graphics cards and all the time disable this Aero for perfomance.

This is a post just to have opinion about if i shoud i switch or not.

Do you think that Windows 7 is still a good system operative in 2022?
