Why did HTC become a footnote so fast in smartphones after helping Android (and Windows) reach mainstream appeal?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 05:18 PM PDT

HTC used to be a big deal in the 2nd transformative phase in the Smartphone Industry. We were going from Palm Pilots, PDA phones, BlackBerry and Win mobile phones, to faster more simplified designs, less complicated Uis, and an even bigger focus on Apps, which were more of a side bit for most smartphones prior outside Win mobile.

During the early Android days, HTC was there, and they were among the most notable brands that helped popularize Android (and windows). They created slick products, created gimmicks like dual lens cameras for glasses free 3D (which did about as well as 3D tv's but still), introduced seamless unified UI with sense, and introduced break throughs in tech like the 1080p then breathtaking Droid DNA, leading up to the HTC One in 2013 that introduced Beats Audio to the mainstream.

From there, we see HTC drop the ball and continue to fail to appeal to consumers, and now, while they do still surprisingly make hardware, barely anyone buys it, or know about it.

I'd wager more people are buying Blu and Cubot phones than HTC phones these days. The company as a whole has been on thin ice for years now.

But why did they fall and become irrelevant so fast?

The only consistency I see over the years about HTC phones, is that SenseUI became and stayed horrible. But otherwise people have reviewed their last several releases as good over the last 5 year's or so.

They used to be the third wheel to Samsung and Apple, now they can't even lick Sony's feet.

Oneplus devices are restricting high refresh rate to pre-approved apps

    Posted: 05 Apr 2022 05:28 AM PDT

After much debugging trying to get videos to play at 120hz on a OnePlus device it seems that they are locking in video playback to 60hz...

When a video is below a certain size it will happily play at 120hz:

However if the video is too large it lock in at 60hz:

Oneplus devices will ignore all calls in-app to play using high refresh rates via the API unless you manually change the package name to one on their pre-approved list (e.g. org.mozilla.firefox).

So if you're like me wondering why videos are making your device feel sluggish, it seems like it's a deliberate choice from OnePlus.
