This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

What does power limit do in GPUs? Does it limit the power by 100% if I set it to 100%? What does temp limit do?

Is Getting A 10th Gen i5 Today Still Worth It? Or Should I Go Alder-Lake?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 01:01 AM PST

The title says it all. I was just wondering whether it's still ok to buy 10th gen chips in today's age instead of the new-fangled 12th gens.

Pre-come cpu cooling paste better than premium ones?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 06:51 PM PST

Let's say I buy an Intel i7 12700, including a corsair watercooler H150i. Is the cooling paste that comes standard with it better than a more premium cooling paste like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut?

Help diagnosing fault/splitting current PC into 2

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 05:49 AM PST

Sorry, this is a bit of a weird one.

I built my PC in 2014 thanks to the help of this sub. Some parts are unchanged (CPU, MoBo, PSU), others have been upgraded (GPU, RAM, fans, CPU cooler)

    Current specs are:

    • Case: Cooler Master N-Series N200 - USB 3.0 Micro-ATX

    • MoBo: Gigabyte B85M-DS3H

    • CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz 3.20 GHz

    • GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Turbo OC 8GB GDDR5X GV-N1080TTOC-8GD

    • RAM: 16GB DDR3

    • PSU: Corsair CP-9020047-UK Builder Series CX500 ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Bronze Power Supply Unit, 500 W

    • CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition

Basically it works fine for light/medium duty (e.g. pretty complex CAD, Photoshop) but when I put it under certain types of load it spontaneously restarts, refuses to POST and I'm forced to turn it off at the PSU and leave it off for a few hours before restarting. The type of load is basically any type of gaming, running even a relatively low intensity game (e.g. Age of Empires 4) causes it to (try to) restart almost immediately. Another interesting clue which must be relevant: even after fully reinstalling Windows on an SSD, it takes maybe 10s to POST which is far longer than I'd expect.

I've tried to diagnose where the fault is but I'm drawing a blank. I don't think it's the GPU as I've run FurMark for quite some time and it causes no problem. I've also performed CPU stress tests so don't think it's that. I've removed all USB peripherals, swapped my CMOS battery, remounted my GPU & RAM, thoroughly cleaned inside, done a full reinstall of Windows and installed only one game to test it - still the problem persists. My temps all seem pretty normal at the time of a spontaneous restart. I've basically exhausted my troubleshooting options for my experience level/hardware I own to swap parts out. Short of buying new components to narrow down the troublemaker, I'm stumped.

Question 1: Does it seem like I'm missing something obvious, or are there more tests I could do to narrow it down to a specific component?

Question 2: Assuming there's no easy fix... Seeing as though there's no problem until I push it too far (gaming), is it worth moving the only part(s) of any real value (GTX 1080) to a new gaming rig and keep the current PC as a light duty machine, e.g. as a Plex media server?

Sorry if I'm being dumb, any help would be greatly appreciated!

To anyone who got a new GPU, how much did YOU pay?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:29 AM PST

I've been out of the PC game for a while now, but am finally looking to build a new PC.
Was checking out the RTX3060Ti and the cheapest I found was $600 (Gigabyte, new)! That's just insane to me... Yet despite that, when I asked online if that price was fair I had people DMing begging for a link (went Out of Stock yesterday).

So I'm curious, to anyone who's recently gotten a GPU, how much did you have to dish out for it?

    Intel i5-10600k getting too hot

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:25 AM PST

    Hi y'all,
I recently built my first pc and am very happy with the outcome.
but recently im getting really worried because of the average temps that my CPU has..
On idle it has like 40-46°C and on load it even reaches up to 99°C

I repasted it but the temps are still the same

Can anyone help me out on this one?

Here are my Specs if anyone needs them

    Intel I5-10600k

    MSI Z490 Tomahawk

    MSI MAG CoreLiquid 240R

    ASUS HD7950

    How's my build?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:32 AM PST

    Link to build: https://imgur.com/a/np1Uj7u

I plan on using this pc for gaming (Minecraft and perhaps subnautica in the future), multitasking (having multiply applications open at once: discord, video players, YouTube etc), school work and video editing (Davinci Resolve 17 with the universal pluggin and more in the future).

    Extra questions:

    1. Is there anything that I might want to change to get better performances from the pc build for a similar price?

    2. What are strimers? Should I get them?

    3. Would using an i7 instead of an i5 benifit me more?(multitasking, gaming, school work and video editing)

    Thank you!

    Ryzen 3800X temps

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:23 AM PST

I have Gigabyte X570 I Aorus and Ryzen 3800X cooled be NH-D15. I have a problem with ramping up fans and temps.

First a question, there is huge difference between temps shown by Ryzen Master and temps shown by CPUID HWMonitor:

    https://imgur.com/a/EQabKbf

    Is this normal?

If so would it be bad if I set fans to ramp up from 75℃? Fans speed is tied up to temps shown by HWMonitor and they are constantly jumping up and down.

Which route to take for upgrade? (Gaming/Streaming)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 04:06 AM PST

I have been browsing non-stop and I just want a straight up answer so here I am.

To start I'm going to post my current PC build:

    B450 Tomahawk Max
    4x8 32 GB DDR4 3200
    Ryzen 5 3600
    GTX 980
    850w Gold Corsair PSU

    Now for the post:

My issue is that I want to upgrade my GPU to a current generation card, but I want my PC to be able to both play games, and have the luxury to be able to stream nicely whenever I want. My first thought was to just upgrade my GPU. But the problem with that is that the Nvidia tax that scalpers and miners have on the 30 series cards is still too high for me to justify spending money on them. This made me look towards the AMD route, but I discovered that AMD's AMF encoder is terrible and should be avoided at all costs (the 6900xt was beat out by last-gen Nvidia cards encoding-wise). This leads me to the only two solutions I can think of, but I don't know which one is better, because I have little to no knowledge on how PC hardware functions when it comes to video encoding. All I have been able to deduce from my countless hours of research, is that Nvidia's NVENC encoder is the best, and CPU encoding is not far from it, but AMD AMF encoding is a no-go.

    Here are my two options:

The first route is to just wait to upgrade to an Nvidia card (I am looking at 3070ti - $950 total is roughly the best price I have found recently)

My second route is to upgrade my CPU to a Ryzen 7 and get a 6700-6800xt card and encode with my CPU. (These two upgrades combined would only cost me $80 more than the first option at $1030 total)

I don't want to upgrade with the intention of achieving a rig that can manage both gaming and streaming, and making the completely wrong decision. I don't know whether it's smarter to upgrade just my GPU and encode through that, or upgrade both components, which would then allow me to have a current-gen GPU while having the ability to encode through my CPU.

Any and all information on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and have have a great day!

Stuttering in games with beefy PC (please help!)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:32 AM PST

For the last year i've struggled with occasional stuttering in games. Some games more than others...e.g. from most stuttering to least Gears 5 > Apex Legends > COD. About 15 fps sudden drops, then it bounces back up quickly but i feel and see the stutter. It sometimes happens when i'm moving around in a map, zooming in, etc. I really am at a loss - no matter what i try, it doesn't fix the stuttering.

    NOTES:

    • All hardware is new except RAM, PSU, and an older SSD (but these are only about 1 year old too).
    • Temperature for GPU and CPU are completely within normal operating ranges (e.g. GPU Hotspot 75C, and CPU max 85C).

    PC SPECS:

    1. CPU - AMD Ryzen R5 5600X
    2. MOBO - ASUS TUF X570 Gaming Plus (wifi)
    3. RAM - XPG Spectrix D60G 16GB
    4. MONITORS - Dual G27Q 27in WQHD 144Hz freesync (connected via displayport)
    5. SSD 1 - Western Digital SN550 M.2 PCI-E NVMe (brand new). Note: Has OS and all games installed on it.
    6. SSD 2 - Samsung Evo 850 (old drive). Note: Has just backup songs, movies on it. No OS or Games.
    7. PSU - RMx Series™ RM750x — 750 Watt 80 PLUS® Gold Certified Fully Modular PSU
    8. GPU - GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming OC 10G

    TRIED SO FAR:

    • Switched video cards, same issue.
    • Tried one monitor at a time
    • Used DDU to reinstall video drivers.
    • Did fresh installs of windows (win10 and 11)
    • Tried with Gsync/freesync enabled and disabled. Vsync on and off.
    • Literally changed every PC component except for RAM, PSU, and an older SSD (i had i5 10400F before, with diff mobo etc. and had stuttering then too).

TESTED WITH CAPFRAMEX (See photos in link below):

    https://imgur.com/a/imEwUeH

I'm at a loss, extremely frustrated. Please help!

    Dual monitor setup

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:39 AM PST

So this might not be the best sub for this, if so i'm sorry and i would love to hear the best sub to ask this question.

I use a laptop for my study and when working from home i use a second monitor to connect to my laptop. I would like to have a desktop with icons and a layout. Thing is, when i disconnect the monitor all these icons jump bak to my laptop, making everything cluttered. Google isn't of much help here because everyone is having the opposite problem where the icons jump to the second screen unwanted. I don't want to set the monitor as the main screen because then the laptop will not have any icons and i want icons on both screens.

If someone knows a good way to fix this i would love to hear it

I need a new case, but I'm not ready to give up my front 3.25", 5.25" bays. What does everyone do nowadays without those slots? Hubs, with wires everywhere? Reach around to the back of the PC all the time?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 05:24 AM PST

My case is fine, but I would like one with better airflow. All the good looking cases don't have any options to add front USB panels, or are terribly ugly. I'm not ready to give up my front USB options. My PC is under my desk, so plugging something into the back is kind of a pain.

I'm also curious as to why all the top selling cases don't have the slots for USB panels, but the MOBOs still have a ton of connections for front USB.

I get that people just either don't use CD/DVD drives anymore, and could get an external one. But I'm just totally lost about the lack of front USB options these days.

So do people plug all their USBs into the back? Does everyone get hubs, with ugly wires going around the PC?

3080 FTW3 Ultra fan ticking at low RPM. Only notice it in less demanding games.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 04:57 AM PST

    Hello all.

I've had my 3080 FTW3 for probably about 8 months or so and not too long after I got it, I noticed the faintest and quietest ticking when I would play Skyrim. I ignored it because it was so quiet that it was hard to care about. Fast forward to today and I notice it again. Just as quiet as ever but I decide to figure out what it is. I narrowed it down to my 3rd GPU fan. If I set that specific fan to a speed below 40% but above 10%, I will get this ticking. It does not occur at any RPM above that. Its ticking at a bpm of about 109 and it usually goes (1 2 3 4 ----- 1 2 3 4) so basically my point is it's a slow tick and it's not constant. It's also so damn quiet that no normal person would ever hear this, but I have an ear for shit like this.

So, it's worth mentioning that I have no issues with the card, it runs well and cools well. I also figure that it's been doing this since I got it, but it took me a while to pick up on it.

My question is, should I even bother with RMA'ing this card? If all it did was this quiet 109bpm click in less demanding games, I would not give a rat's shit about it, but I wonder if this is a sign that it could get worse down the line.

    What do you guys recommend?

I spilled Soda over my PC

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:44 PM PST

I accidentally knocked over a bottle of soda and some of it flew right into my PC (I have an case which has holes on the top, but I had a small magnetic dust catcher, which probably blocked a bit of it). I got a green screen and turned of and unplugged the PC as quickly as I can. The only place where liquid landed was the motherboard and I carefully dried of as much as I can with paper and microfiber towels. I later started the PC and everything worked fine. Is and will everything now be fine with my Computer? I heard that I should clean it with an alcohol swab, but I don't have one now and can't get one, because today is Sunday and everything is closed. Should I clean my Motherboard? If yes, what is the best way to clean it?

I ordered parts to build my first PC - could some check if I didn't fuck anything up?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:22 AM PST

    Here's the list: https://www.x-kom.pl/lista/fzamjkqja

Sorry for not using pcpartpicker but too many parts are missing on that site.

Things not listed in the list above:

GPU - RTX 3080 from PNY

    CPU paste - Gelid GC-Extreme.

As far as I was able to research, everything should be compatible in my build, but I'd be glad if someone could confirm.

    3070TI vs 3080TI

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 10:29 PM PST

Ok so prices have really dropped where I live, practically 35 percent since I blinked and check last so finally going to buy one to build our PC

3070 TI for about 1,100 USD and 3080TI for about 1,500 USD

I'm sure it's much cheaper in the US but here it has been a drop.

My question is the 3070TI going to give longevity? Will it cover everything I need for my sons PC I doubt he will go above 1,440p in the near future...

My logic tells me but the 3070TI that's better than anything he needs, then in a few years when 3070TI is outdated, prices will probably have adjusted and we can buy a new card?

The second question is for same 3070 TI (and 3080) I'm seeing much more expensive cards - are they really tuned that much better? I'm focusing right now on:

Gigabyte 3070 TI cheapest version I found) 3080 TI Ftw3 (that's cheapest version)

What if I got the 3080 v2 OC instead it's the same price as 3080 TI

Used to be a lot easier to know which card to buy 10 years ago!
