Is there any benefit to installing Microsoft Office with Wine? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 01:24 AM PST This article has me wondering whether I am just wasting my time. I am using Linux Mint 20.3 (dual-booted with Win10), and I've spent two days making unsuccessful attempts at installing Office 2016 and Office 2013 Pro Plus Retail. I have an Asus laptop with an Intel Core i7-4500U CPU. I've tried various steps from the Wine AppDB notes and AskUbuntu. I've tried both Wine and PlayOnLinux. Every installation attempt ends with an Office error message. The one method that I thought would work just results in a black installation window. According to the LifeWire article above, even when it's successfully installed it's not all that reliable. Is Office Online all around a better approach in Linux? I've also considered creating a Windows 7 virtual machine. I've used LibreOffice here and there, but I'm trying to work on my resume which is an existing .docx file that doesn't format correctly in LibreOffice Writer. The Microsoft Office suite is probably the only thing keeping me from booting Linux 100% of the time. It would be really nice not to have to boot into Windows for it. Edit: Open Office > LibreOffice [link] [comments] |
Issue with Fractional Scaling. Posted: 06 Mar 2022 12:27 AM PST System info: Hi, I'm using Endeavour with Gnome 41.4 on the Wayland display server, and due to the nonexistent server side decoration support on Wayland, i want to switch to Xorg. Now when i switch to Xorg, i need to have fractional scaling set to 125%. To do this i did the following: One thing to note is that the default is Wayland. However, after using both these commands and restarting, the fractional scaling options on Gnome with Xorg do not come up. Any help with this will be appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |

Converting filenames containing full width characters? Posted: 05 Mar 2022 11:22 PM PST I've noticed some of my files (mainly Japanese TV rips) that have English text in them look weird, as if they have a space between English letters, yet in fact they do not. For example I have "ï¼ï¼´ï¼¶" in some of them instead of "MTV". So I looked it up, and "ï¼ï¼´ï¼¶" character names are the same as for "MTV", except they all have this "fullwidth" prefix. Is there some tool that would convert these characters to normal ones? [link] [comments] |
Is there an idiot's guide to using scrcpy wirelessly? Posted: 05 Mar 2022 06:21 PM PST I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff, and I can't figure out how to use this app, even after reading a few guides. I'm wondering if there is a simple hand holding guide that can get me to use this app. Thanks [link] [comments] |

How to drop folders in kvm/Qemu VM? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:35 AM PST I've installed spice guest tools and i can drag & drop files, but is there a way to drop even entire folders? I'm using mainly Windows 10 guest. [link] [comments] |
I'm almost giving up on Linux, can anyone help me? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:34 AM PST Hi, I don't know if is the correct sub to post it, but it is my rant * title * - I'm using a PC Gamer with an old video card, and now the nvidia-340xx legacy driver crashes in new kernels (even patches didn't work for me) and I have to use nouveau which crashes mine DE when I use something graphically heavy, sometimes opening a graphics program (it doesn't have to be heavy) takes me back to the login screen if I don't use "DRI_PRIME=0" (I'm using 2 HDMI slots monitors, one NVIDIA, the other Intel, looks like it bugs with nouveau graphics) - I was using Kubuntu and suddenly my internet stopped working after a update and I had to use my smartphone to search about it and I found on StackOverflow a solution that I had to activate my internet manually discovering the interface by a command. - Krita and some others don't run with acceleration, even it being made for Linux (KDE?), but Krita runs on other systems better with it enabled and other software detects the card even sometimes not being able to use it because of CUDA 1.2 (Blender 2.75a for example, which still detects old cards) - I was forced to switch between Manjaro and Kubuntu as I am learning programming (for games especially) and I love using static libraries to make executables without dependencies, but Kubuntu provides static libraries and Manjaro does not, but Manjaro has updated software and some great packages by community or AUR. Kubuntu runs games, Manjaro gives me an error called IOT restricted (core dumped), I realized it happens when a game, exported by Unity3D for example, needs to open a window before the game. - Other systems runs game better, as I'm developing games, I don't think it's a system for me. I've had some good experiences with Linux, but I think it's time for me to leave it behind. What do I do? - sorry for my english, not a native - [link] [comments] |
How to access windows partition while using Linux? Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:24 PM PST So, I'm kind of new to Linux. Somewhat recently i learned that i can use live Linux usb to access your windows partition or do the same on a pc you are dual booting. This seems to work on my old laptop like a charm, but my current one only shows me the second ssd i have on it when i try to access from Linux. The primary ssd that hosts the windows OS and program files doesn't show up anywhere! Any suggestions / solutions? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |

Dual Boot - Windows 11 and Linux ( Ubuntu) issue Posted: 06 Mar 2022 01:20 AM PST I was installing ubuntu on my windows laptop but encountered a hiccup. https://www.xda-developers.com/dual-boot-windows-11-linux/ - I followed this guide. I did manage to install ubuntu when my usb drive was plugged into the computer. But now I can't access it. When I open the computer's UEFI/BIOS settings and try to change or select the boot order for the installed ubuntu OS , it doesn't show the ubuntu OS option alongwith the Windows option( Windows Boot Manager). Instead it shows ' disabled'. I did install ubuntu using an installation media ( usb drive) and also had partitioned the main storage drive of my laptop before. Should I select the 'disabled' option to make the ubuntu OS load up first? Or is there an issue if I do that? The ubuntu version is ubuntu-20.04.4 . Windows is Windows 11 Home , x64-based PC When i checked the disk management option in windows. It still shows that the 24 GB partition that I had created for Ubuntu exists. Does that mean Ubuntu is still on my laptop? Or do i need to somwhow uninstall this ubuntu version.. and reinstall the latest one? .. I read somewhere that I need to check whether Ubuntu was installed in UEFI or Legacy option. Please help out! [link] [comments] |
Any Good Multi-Platform Guides to Offline Repos? Posted: 05 Mar 2022 06:15 PM PST What's up guys? I have an extended relative in Finland asking about which distro is best to put on his 8th gen Intel Core i7 laptop with a 2TB SSD and how to have an offline repository that syncs with main repos whenever he has internet. In case anyone has a "emergency laptop" in their "go bag/escape kit": how do we do what is mentioned above? Never know when you need to install a utility for something, but can't because of no internet, etc. So for like Arch/Manjaro, Debian/Ubuntu, Void, Alpine, etc: any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
