This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Pc blue screened while I was in VR. damn near shit my pants

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 10:14 PM PST

I just upgraded my cpu, motherboard, and ram in my PC. basically built a new computer.

I was playing no man's sky being blown away at how much nicer of an experience it is, when my screen freezes and a horrible buzzing sound blasts through my headset.

I take it off and see my pc counting down to restart with a blue screen. I was really startled so I didn't see an error code or anything before it reset, but now I'm at my windows event viewer log.

There are 21 events in the past hour and it had been on for an hour or less since turning it on for the first time. I kind of have no idea what I'm looking at here I assume only the most recent two events had to do with the crash.

Those events are: application error, event ID 1000, task category (100). THXservice.exe is the application.

The second one is Service Control Manager, event ID 7034, task category none. It also says THX service.

From what I gather THX service deals with audio. Which would explain the horrible buzzing noise I heard. My question is, how can I know if it is due to my new hardware, or if it's just a matter of updating a driver or something. For all I know it could've been a freak one time incident like a bit flip

    Memtest86 “Failed”

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 05:33 PM PST

Guys, this may not be the right sub… but I've been having issues such as random BSOD with so many different error messages and even my browsers crash occasionally and games just fail to load or crash randomly. So I ran Memtest on it… it found over 10,000 errors and then the program said "FAIL" because it found more than the program can handle. Do I basically need to just start fresh with a new build?

First full AMD build and it's Hackintoshed

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 09:10 PM PST

    Pictures first: https://imgur.com/a/s0O1aWn

    Parts are as follows:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600X (Will most likely upgrade to a 5950X next year)

Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite Wifi

RAM: Corsair Vengeance PRO RGB 16GB and 32GB CL16 3200 MHz (will be changing out 16GB dims for 32GB to have 64GB of RAM)

    Cooler: Corsair H100i Elite Capilix

GPU: AMD Radeon 6900 XT (nice)

PSU: EVGA 750W Supernova G2 (From previous build)

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C with dark tinted side panel

Fans: Corsair LL120 fans (Run surprisingly qiuet)

Finished building one of my dream PCs and it's amazing. I got lucky on my parts and luckily I didn't get scalped or ripped off for the stuff I bought second-hand. Mainly built this PC for gaming, video editing in Final Cut Pro, and some audio production.

As you can see I Hackintoshed this build and this thing is amazing. I currently own an M1 Mac Mini for reference and this thing absolutely destroys it in render times and all-around fluidity in Final Cut Pro. Did a real-world test with my own footage(1080 60p Sony S-Log3 rendered at 4k). Rendered a 1-minute 20-second video on both. Mac Mini completed it in 1m48s, Hackintosh rendered it in 24s flat. Having that extra RAM helps considerably when editing videos as I would use up all 16gb on the Mac Mini. This will be my main editing rig for the next 5 years.

Dual boot with Windows and this thing is a dream. Haven't had any issues gaming. From playing The Witcher 3, Warzone, Forza Horizon 5, Halo Infinite, etc.

    Upgrading 5700xt to 3080ti

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 09:14 PM PST

I stopped by Best Buy today and they had a 3080 ti in stock so I grabbed it. Now looking at my current build and doing some research, I'm aware I need to update a few components. I am looking at getting a Ryzen 5800x and a 750W PSU. Is there any thing else I should start looking at? TIA

Question about having 2 M.2 drives (No, not that question)

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 04:58 PM PST

I've looked around quite a bit for the answer to this question and I figured I'd just ask you awesome people! So I'm doing a big overhaul of my PC and this time I've got 2 M.2 NVMe drives I'm going to install. A 500gb for just Windows and stuff and a 2tb for the games. I know that the first slot on the motherboard has dedicated lanes and will therefore be the faster slot. I already know my other components can handle it, my question is this:

For optimal performance, which drive should go in the faster slot? Drive 1 because it has Windows and the drivers and such, or Drive 2 because that's where all the steam files will be?

I am installing a new PCI card tomorrow in my computer. I have liquid cooling.. can I tilt my tower to the side?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 10:10 PM PST

Hi all, I have the Hydro Series™ H150i PRO RGB 360mm Liquid CPU Cooler for my liquid cooling system. I'm going to be installing a PCI capture card tomorrow and was wondering if it's safe to tilt my case on its side.

Additionally.. if I wanted to change the water while I'm at it, is it difficult? I haven't changed the water since I installed it in January 2019 😬 iirc it was distilled water

    Did I fuck up?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 06:14 PM PST

Motherboard died, sent pc to a store and got a new motherboard, cpu and ram (msi b660m mortar, i5 12400). It came with the stock cpu cooler, so I took it off and tried putting in the bequiet cooler I was using before, but it wouldn't fit. I spent maybe 20 minutes trying to get it to fit, only to realize it was the wrong size. I put the stock cooler back and it has been working fine

I used a bit of force to try to get it to close, did I screw something up with the motherboard or cpu?

Which one should i buy? Gtx1650 or Rx 6500 XT

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 07:32 PM PST

I know this question was posted already an hundred times but from where i live this two cards are sold for a little over 200$ so, please don't recommend other card because they are way too overpriced.

I already know the deal with PCIE 3.0 so i will face this problem with my specs, however from benchmarks seen on yt the rx seem the better options. Here my relevant specs: CPU: ryzen 5 3600 GPU: rx550 2gb Motherboard: b450m steel legends Ram: 16gb 3200mhz Display: The one i use support AMDSync, dunno if this is relevant

    Thank you!

Would these upgrades be a good pick for the price?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:40 PM PST

    Current PC:
Intel i3-7100t (Inadequate, I play many CPU intensive games)
GTX 1650 (Gigabyte 1710mhz version, overclocked to 1950mhz)
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB CL15 3000mhz (I know 32GB is overkill, running at 2400mhz)
    Asus H110i-plus
    Samsung 850 evo (C: 500GB)
    Corsair Force 3 (D: 120GB)
    Thermaltake H17 (I should've bought the H18 instead)
    Corsair VS 450 (Gray label)

    Upgrades:
Intel i5-12500 (I plan to use the better iGPU for some light tasks, it's also only like $15 over the 12400)
    Asrock b660m pro rs
    1x Arctic P12 , 2xArctic P14 (If the current fans are loud)
Be Quiet Pure rock 2 (If the stock cooler is inadequate/too loud)

    CPU overheating alert

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:21 PM PST

After a 6 hour gaming session (Valorant,) I had to restart my pc because it became laggy. After restarting, i got a "CPU overheating alert" at startup. Went into BIOS, saw my CPU is idle @ 60C. My AIO and all of my fans were working. Is re-applying thermal paste the next step? What other things should I look out for?

    PC Stuttering

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:08 PM PST

I recently built a Pc with a core i7 10700k, rtx 3070ti, 2 8gig sticks of ddr4 3600mhz Ram, 850 watt power supply, MPG Z490 Gaming Edge Wifi, and a 1tb Samsung EVO m.2 SSD. I previously had an rx550 to tie me over until I could get the rtx 3070ti and it was super smooth albeit quite weak. Once I got my hands on the 3070ti my pc began to stutter. Its small but really annoying. I have tried reinstalling Windows, Reinstalling drivers with DDU, changing nvidia control panel settings, going back to previous driver versions, enabling and disabling vsync/gsync, and nothing works. Anybody have any fix I havent thought of yet?

3070RTX/Win10 sudden black screen shortly after startup with minimal/idle load.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 08:01 PM PST

    Had the 3070 since DEC2020, has worked flawlessly the whole time. *nothing* has been changed in the case since. As of yesterday when you power the PC on you have anywhere from instant black screen at the Windows login screen to maybe 10 minutes of use before black screen. I haven't even tried to boot a game in several weeks, this all occurs either at complete idle or with nothing more intensive than Firefox running. Heres what I've tried so far;

Have updated the driver via GeForce Experience to 511.79 (did not fix issue)

Disabled GSYNC and HDR. Tried multiple monitors including HDMI and DP (did not fix issue)

Card is not nor has it ever been overclocked or had the voltage altered in any way, honestly before 30 minutes ago I never knew how to do any of that and still don't care to do it unless it'll fix the problem. I have MSI Afterburner installed now to see if something is reading out of whack. Seems normal, just 5 tabs on firefox and nothing else going on its been holding 35-40c which I understand is fine, temp problems generally arise above 90c

In Windows Event Viewer I have a ton of Event 34 errors which describes as the following:

"Idle power management features on processor 7 in group 0 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware."

There are 8 of them in a row, all saying the same thing except its for processor 0-7 in no particular order. I have absolutely no idea how to interpret this data, I'm borderline illiterate at this level of PC diagnostics. I also don't want to go down a rabbit hole of chasing my tail with an unrelated issue. Anyone got any advice?

    Opinion on this build?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 06:45 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZQGBPX

The 3070ti is just a placeholder. By the time I have enough money saved up, prices will most likely have dropped, so I'm going to search around for a 3080. Only need 16 GB of RAM since I'll pretty much only play games on it, and only 1 TB of storage since I usually only play games that either have tons of replayability or don't take up a lot of space. I plan to work for this build this year, and make it the pride and joy of my high school life!

3070 TI won't work in computer. PC was running fine before new GPU.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 07:36 PM PST

Hello, I just purchased a founders edition 3070 TI. After disconnecting my Asus ROG 3060 and connecting the new one my computer will not post. I tried holding down the reset button on my case to reset the CMOS. I tried booting without the GPU and I don't think my CPU has onboard graphics, because that didn't work either. After powering everything on my keyboard does not light up and the motherboard information light stays lit on VGA. I have a DisplayPort cable plugged into my GPU and a HDMI plugged into my motherboard.

    RYZEN 5600X

    RAM: Corsair 2x 8gb (16gb total)

    PSU: 650 WATT EVGA

    MOBO: B550 pro wifi

Do i9-9900k CPUs ever come boxed with a stock cooler?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 08:46 PM PST

I bought an i9-9900k a month or two ago off of Amazon and it came in a plain cardboard box with one of those tiny 3-4 inch round coolers. I was under the impression that this CPU never came boxed with a cooler because I've read that a bunch of times when poking around the internet. (it's on the internet so it must be true!) So it threw some flags for me worrying that it wasn't a factory new CPU but rather a used one thrown in the box from some other CPU.

I'm sure it's fine, but I'd love to hear some reassurance that I'd heard wrong from someone who knows for a fact just so I can stop wondering.
