    Simple Questions - March 02, 2022

    Posted: 01 Mar 2022 09:00 PM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is this too much thermal paste?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 06:54 AM PST

    Hello fellows,

First time I use this thermal paste: Cooler Master Mastergel Regular.

What do you think about quantity I used on this cpu?

I've been working on rebuilding my workstation for the past three weeks, and it's finally done, modulo a few cosmetic changes. Everything works now, where "everything" includes...an awful lot of stuff, filling up my CaseLabs Magnum T10:

    https://nick-black.com/dankwiki/index.php?title=Schwarzger%C3%A4t_III

This is my first machine with internal lighting, and also my first to use custom-designed parts (both mechanical and electric). I learned OpenSCAD and improved my 3d printing techniques during this build, and also extended my knowledge of electronics, cooling, and fluids. I furthermore developed a better understanding of power distribution. In that regard―and also with regards to the final product―I consider the build a complete success. I hope you'll enjoy my fairly extensive writeup, particularly the power complications.

What would you have done differently? Where do you see room for improvement? Thanks!

Would this build run Fortnite/Minesweeper or would I be ripping off some poor parent?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 01:48 AM PST

Hi guys, I've recently gotten a lot of help from this sub (through my own questions and finding previous answers on here) with a complete refurbishment of my PC.

I now have the following parts left as spare:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hyLVnt

** I don't have the SSD but would buy it rather than re-install the historic HDD that I was using to help speed it up a bit.

For those who can't click in those parts are:

    - AMD A6-6400 CPU (Part picker only listed it with K but I don't see that on the CPU itself, it has integrated graphics if that helps determine more exactly)

    - Asus A68HM-K motherboard

    - Crucial 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3L-1600

    - ATX 500 B PSU (Brand literally seems to be ATX, otherwise it's unbranded)

    - 250GB/500GB WD Blue Sata SSD (which I would buy specifically for the build

I would also buy a case and could add my old case fans to the build.

So, as the title suggests, would this run fortnite/minesweeper etc. for a kid/pre-teen with reasonable performance? The SSD would cost me about €60-65 so was thinking of selling it for $150-200 if it would perform. I don't want to rip off some poor parent and also don't want to buy a case and SSD that I don't need at the moment only to realise it's terrible. I would also install windows on it for them and just get them to buy the activation key for when they got home to set it up.

What you guys think Abort because it's not even capable of running those things for a kid? Or belt away and have fun doing a build with my old parts?

Edit: I have no clue how I managed to type minesweeper instead of Minecraft TWICE but I did it. My bad!

Advice on high refresh rate monitors

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 06:35 AM PST

Hello I currently have a laptop with a 60hz monitor, I'm getting a good deal on a 165 hz monitor. My laptop has a GTX 1650 and i get 144 or higher fps on my main games r6s and valorant. On my phone i have a 120 hz display and i can clearly notice a difference and it is way smoother compared to 60. Anyways should I go for the 165hz monitor?

NEW PC BUILD WENT DEAD after installing 2nd ram stick

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 12:15 PM PST

I built my first gaming pc ever but my experience went from very good to frustration now. I was waiting for ram to arrive in mail yesterday. When it arrived, I was so excited to bring my new pc alive. I installed the ram (crucial ballistic 16gb 3200Mhz X 2) separate from each other for dual channel. The pc opened very smooth, went to bios (MSI B550 TOMAWHAWK) and applied XMP profile for my ram but I figured out that one of the two ram sticks is not detected by the bios. I closed the bios and installed windows 10 and opened task manage to confirm 2nd ram working or no. I got similar result that PC only reading 8gb of ram not 16gb. I shutdown the pc and opened the case removed the be quiet pro 4 CPU cooler front fan to be able to reach the ram positions. I re adjusted ram positions and saw by luck that USB C stuck under the GPU (GIGABYTE RTX 3060 TI) so I detached the GPU and added the USB C in its right position and then reseated the GPU in its slot.

NOW THE FUN STARTS. I tried to start the pc but the PC or motherboard not getting any kind of power with no lights it is like completely dead with no sign of life, and none of the fans are spinning nor the PSU Fan. I checked every single cable on the motherboard (8 PIN CPU, 24 PIN MOBO, GPU 8 PIN, SSD, and FRONT PANEL CONNECTORS). I made sure PSU power cable connected and PSU Button in open position. I removed the PSU and tried it on my old PC, and the fans started to SPIN which means that power supply is working. I went very depressed after I could not get it to run again.

I ordered Microcenter diagnostic for $40 closed the case and took it to microcenter. The service team are not super friendly but all reviews said that they are super knowledgeable and they told me it will take couple of days to just diagnose and maybe extra if repair is needed.

    Full specs ( CROSAIR 4000D AIRFLOW, Ryzen 7 5800x, RTX 3060 Ti, 2 SSD, 2 X 8GB Crucial Ballistic 3200MHz, MSI B550 TOMAHAWK, 600W EVGA 80 PLUS PSU, Dark Rock 4 PRO CPU COOLER)

*Note: I was using the same PSU for 5 months in my old pc with the RTX 3060 ti

Sorry for making it too long but I just feel bad and I would like to hear your opinions about this situation guys. What do you think what have happened ???

    Overclocking/undervolting for dummies

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 12:04 PM PST

Let's first start with the fundamentals: the overall performance of computer chips will in general increase with the clock frequencies at which they are run. As most of you already know, clock frequency is the number of cycles executed by a chip per second. More cycles will usually mean more calculations performed per second, and thus more compute power/performance.

Now, voltage. To get a chip to run at a higher clock frequency, the voltage that powers the chip needs to be increased too. To achieve higher clock frequencies, you will need higher voltages. However, power consumption scales up with voltage, meaning that a higher voltage will increase the overall power consumption of a chip, and thus increase its overall temperature too.

Not all chips of the same model are made equal. Depending on their silicon quality, some chips will be able to reach higher clock frequencies than others with the same voltage applied to them. This phenomenon is usually referred to as silicon lottery, as the silicon quality of your chip is usually random unless it is binned.

When the stock/default settings of a certain BIOS are made, voltages will usually be overestimated to make sure that no chip will end up running unstable no matter its silicon quality. This means that you usually have some overhead that can be utilized to run higher frequencies on your chip with the same voltages as stock. This is why keeping the stock (unoptimized) settings of your motherboard/graphics card can be very much of a waste, although those settings will still give you more than 90% of the efficiency of your chip.

Leveraging that extra 10% of efficiency will be one of your main goals when trying to overclock your CPU/GPU/RAM. You will thus try to run the highest clock frequencies that you can reach without having your system become unstable at a given voltage. This is where trial and error comes into play. The more voltage values you can check the better, as this will help get your the most optimized settings to run your chip at. Do not forget to take note of the key clock frequencies with their associated voltage values in something like a spreadsheet if possible.

Once you have found the most optimized settings for your specific chip, you will generally want to aim for one of those three scenario profiles:

    1. (commonly referred to as undervolting) You will set your chip to run at LOWER voltages than stock while trying to keep SIMILAR clock frequencies to stock. Do not be afraid to test the performance of your chip at lower frequencies than stock, as the first few hundred MHz of lower clocks will usually impact its performance by a negligible amount. You will however reach a point where decreasing your clock frequencies further will start greatly hurting the performance of your system. It's all about finding the sweet spot for your specific chip. Undervolting will usually result in LOWER power consumption/temperatures/noise than stock settings while getting your SIMILAR performance (or a few percent lower).
    2. (simply getting the best out of stock voltages) You will set your chip to run at SIMILAR voltages to stock while trying to get the best clock frequencies that those voltages can give you. This will usually result in SIMILAR power consumption/temperatures/noise to stock settings while getting you BETTER performance (by around 3-5% usually depending on the silicon quality of your chip).
    3. (trying to get maximum performance) You will set your chip to run at the HIGHEST clock frequencies and voltages that the power limit of your chip will allow you to without having it thermal throttle. This will usually result in HIGHER power consumption/temperatures/noise while getting the HIGHEST performance (usually only around a few more percent than Scenario 2).

Scenario 3 is very hard to recommend for regular PC users as it will give you very bad thermals and very noisy fans for not that much better performance from Scenario 2. It is used more by enthusiasts that are trying to break performance records than regular people although it remains an option if you have extremely good cooling or are just trying to have fun with your hardware. I would usually recommend Scenario 2 if you have good/quiet cooling on your chip, and Scenario 1 if you are trying to get the best power efficiency out of your chip or have subpar/noisy cooling on it. Most of the time though, it is about finding the sweet spot provided your chip's silicon quality and your cooling.

Hope that helped anyone that was confused about the subject!

Thoughts on my pretty-much-final PC parts list? First time builder.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 03:26 PM PST

I'm a first time PC builder. I've been doing all the research I can the past month on building my first ever PC after years of wanting my own for some mid-range gaming, nothing heavy, but I'm still fairly in the dark with things and would love some advice/thoughts on the parts I have listed! Nothing's 100% final, but I feel like I'm confident enough with these parts. Thoughts? I still need a monitor, but with my budget nearing max I need something pretty cheap if anybody has any recommendations on that, too.

    Upgrading from Ryzen 3600. 5600X, 5800X, or don't bother?

First build with R5600x + 6600xt and low expectations, do I even need this?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 02:27 PM PST

    Hi all,

This is my first PC build pretty much since 2004, so I'm very behind on technology and getting to grips with all that's out there at the moment. I intend to use it for gaming and general purpose office work, very occasionally running some complicated stats or large GIS visualisations in RStudio, and I'd to play around with VMs and maybe learn a bit of music production/DJing.

When I say gaming, I'm not super up-to-date with games and I'll generally pick up games several years after they've come out. I'm also generally thrifty, preferring to buy 2nd hand whenever possible, though I'm opting to go for new here, not knowing anything about the current 2nd hand market for pcs/components (I have a suspicion with the chip shortage it's easy to get scammed).

E.g. at the minute I sometimes play No Man's Sky & Subnautica on a friend's PC from 2013 or so on Medium settings, but I'd like to play them on a bigger screen with high settings (and on a PC that belongs to me, for starters!). I'd like to try Fallout 4, Outer Wilds, RDR2, maybe whatever the latest GTA is at this point (5? 6?), some Dark Souls for example, Cyberpunk 2077 maybe. Basically I think I have low expectations and low requirements, but I'd like to spend my money well and keep this machine usable for a long time. I understand future-proofing is a bit of a lost cause, but I'm not future-proofing against future high-end games, more against general OS-/software-bloat that happens over time.

My budget is ~£1250, including a screen - I've put together the following on pcpartpicker (I need to figure out a better motherboard & case pairing, the current combination doesn't have enough headers to use the USB-C port on the front of the case):
EDIT: forgot to say I don't want any RGB on this, thanks, and silent running would be a plus!

My questions at this point are:

    1. is this the right kind of ballpark to aim for? Is it overkill given what I want (and should I seriously consider getting an older used rig instead?)
    2. Any thoughts on the screen? I've seen recommendations to avoid specific models, but the one I picked above feels like a good price-quality ratio.

Help - PC turns on and off every 2 seconds

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 10:23 AM PST

When I try to turn my 2 year old PC on, the lights, fans all come on and then they go off after a second then come back on after 2-3 seconds then this process repeats till I turn off the main power. I thought this might be a PSU issue even though mine is only a couple years old. There is also a clicking noise like a switch that I can hear in the PSU everytime it turns on and off. Any thoughts?

    Specs: i7-9700k 2070s 32GB 3600 ram 750W Corsair PSU

    Update - FIXED!

Thanks for everyone that suggested a way of fixing it, the culprit was indeed the RAM I merely took all my sticks out and put them back in and my PC booted up again.

    Optimal fan layout - Corsair 5000D, 4 Fans and a 360mm AIO

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 05:53 AM PST

    Hey all!
I have all my parts ordered for a case swap (coming from an Alienware prebuilt) and I was wondering how I should orient my fans.

Currently, I'm thinking about attaching my 360mm AIO on the top as 3 exhausts, using the 2 Arctic P12's I ordered as intake on the front alongside one of the stock fans, and finally the second stock fan as an exhaust in the back. Is there anything else I should consider? Any help would be appreciated!

Pre-Built PC instead of Steam Deck

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 01:20 PM PST

Hello, I am currently Q1 in the steam deck que and I was debating heavily if I should buy a PC instead because of the longevity and overall general use that suits my needs.

I live in Romania and I found a prebuild on one of the more popular stores that specializes in PC hardware and was wondering if the 1100 euro price tag is worth it. Below are details but you can also see more on their site:

    CPU: Ryzen 7 5800

    GPU: RTX 3060

    Motherboard: AMD B550

    PSU: 550W

    Storage: 512 SSD

I want to point out that I do not know the quality of the psu and the brand of the GPU and will ask for more info 100%.

    Thanks in advance!

    1440p first pc

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 01:24 AM PST

So I configured 2 pc's and I have the choice between a 1100€ pc with a rx 6600xt i5 12400f or a rtx 3060 ti with a i5 12400f 1250€, so that I don't overkill my budget. Everything comes with 16 gb ram 3200, 1 tb ssd, a 500 Watt be quiet pure power 9 psu and a b660M PRO RS. My budget normally was a 1000€ but that's not realistic for 1440p. I would play games at high settings on a 144hz monitor. The rtx 3060 ti is 150€ more expensive, worth it? If I pick the rtx 3060 ti, nothing is bottlenecked right? I'm from Europe btw.

Keep 3060 or downgrade to 1660S?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 07:31 AM PST

Hey guys, my R9 290X recently started struggling with games, such as giving me 17FPS on Halo Infinite on the lowest settings at 720p lmao. So I upgraded it to a 3060 for MSRP but have the opportunity to trade it for a used 1660S + $200.

I don't have a high refresh rate monitor, and I don't play a lot of triple A games. I'd be ok with 60fps on high or even medium settings but I do want my GPU to let me game at 60FPS for a long *long* time (as the 9 year old 290X can attest to). The most graphics intensive thing I do is VR with an Oculus Rift CV1, so it's not crazy high resolution, but 90hz.

Would it be best to grab the 1660S and instead invest in a newer CPU/Mobo/RAM, and then upgrade to a XX70 or XX80 in a couple years? Currently have a 6700K with 12GB DDR3 RAM.

I just kinda feel the performance (and money) is wasted seeing how I'm not playing at either 1440p or 144hz.

Budget Used PC, is it worth the money?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 12:18 PM PST

Hey! Me Student was about to build himself a PC when accidentally came across a used one which is as follows:

    AMD Ryzen 3 3200g

    16 GB DDR4-3200 MHz

    500 GB SSD, PCIe Kingston

    AMD Radeon Vega 8, 2GB

    Asus Prime A320M-K Mainboard.

    For 250 €.

My use case is mostly everyday and office tasks. I do want it to somewhat futureproof for the price.

Thanks a ton! Haven't been in PCs for a long time and am a little bit overwhelmed.

    USB Disconnecting Sound

    Posted: 02 Mar 2022 03:53 PM PST

So every like 2 seconds my PC makes the USB disconnecting sound. And I've tracked it down to something called like Port_#0005.Hub_#0002 and the description is generic USB hub. I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I've tried unplugging a bunch of things and plugging them back in, deleting the driver, reinstalling the driver(through windows update because I don't know what the device is. I'm losing my mind trying to figure this out. It makes it so hard to play COD because it's constantly going off in my headset. And I don't want to mute it and ignore it because theres obviously an issue and I'd like to fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated. P.S. I've tried alot of things I found on google and none of them helped.

    Specs-

    Asus Crosshair VIII Hero

    Ryzen 5950x

    32GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 4000MHz CL18

    GB 3080 Waterforce

    Samsung m.2 980 Pro 1TB (OS Drive)
