    XP VM vs XP Dualboot?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 12:10 PM PST

Alright so, I have a good question. So my PC has full XP driver support. I need modern software so, what is better? I can do an XP dualboot, or a VM. A VM would work, but my hardware isn't the best to do that. The only downside of dualbooting is that Windows XP (obviously) doesn't support UEFI, so I would need to use legacy boot on Vista+

    Which would be better?

Updating windows 7 enterprise to windows 10 education

Updating windows 7 enterprise to windows 10 education

I'm trying to upgrade my windows 7 machine to 10 without clean-installing it, as it would be a huge pain to reinstall all work related apps

Normal windows update does not work since the machine is running an enterprise version of windows, and the normal windows media upgrade only supports home/pro/etc versions

after googling it up i found out that enterprise supports upgrade to education, so I got an education license and iso, mounting it however only gave a clean install option, no way to keep apps.

Is there any way to upgrade windows 7 enterprise to 10 without having to clean install?

No TPM 2.0 on Windows 11

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 12:31 PM PST

Hiya! I recently updated to Windows 11 though I didn't actually have the required hardware for it. I used an alternative way to get over the TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirement. At the time I didn't really know that Valorant's Anti-Cheat can detect what Windows version I am using and it is forcing me to switch them on in my BIOS. I wasn't able to find any fix for it and I've already been looking for a long time, do you guys have any idea on how I could fix it? Thanks in advance!!!

Should I switch to Windows 11 after using OS X since 2017

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 11:35 AM PST

I bought a Gaming PC yesterday to try out Windows, I like it but the big question is if I should completely switch over from OS X? I like MacOS 12 (and Apple in general) but it feels pretty limited (i.e: most games are not compatible with OS X, it feels really basic, and for games that DO work on Mac, there's almost never controller support). All feedback is appreciated

Why does Windows still have old interfaces?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:39 AM PST

I noticed whenever I do Alt+Enter with Cmd on Windows 10(to make it fullscreen), I see a very brief glimpse of the Windows 7 UI(y'know, the blue, nostalgic one?). Is this just Microsoft being lousy, or is this an intentional thing? I also saw how there was Windows-95-ish UI in this vid: Secret "Session 0" In Windows although that channel was using Windows 7. Man, no wonder there is so much bloat...

What was your experience with Windows Vista like when it came out?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 08:09 AM PST

I'm sure this question has been posed a million times by now, but as someone who never used Vista at the time I'm curious as to what the people on this subreddit thought of it at launch and the years afterward.

I'll start with my dad's Vista experience: He liked it, but it was slow.

Lockdown Privacy looks to not implement a Windows version, so is there any Windows-oriented alternative?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 03:47 AM PST

Not to imply anything, but just like how iOS and macOS have Lockdown Privacy and Android has DuckDuckGo's App Tracking Protection, but if there's a Windows-oriented one, I'd love so.

And I mean system-wide, not just within a browser like Firefox and uBlock Origin.

Windows 11 22000.493 by the way.
Or do I just use Windows Subsystem for Android and DuckDuckGo will be able to run its App Tracking Protection effectively on Android and Windows too?

    Wipe-disk and reinstall Windows 10 Pro 21H2

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 11:43 PM PST

I bought a HP Probook with Windows installed. Since I'm doing some touchy partition work, I want to have media ready to reinstall in case I screw things up. From what Google told me, I can get the key using the OA3xOriginalProductKey wmic command, and I can download the Windows10 ISO using the Microsoft media creation tool.

My concern is that this Microsoft post from 2017 implies I need the EXACT edition, not a generic edition. And further dictates that the edition must come from the OEM systembuilder?

The media creation tool never gave me a "backup media" option, just "Upgrade this PC" or "Create media for another PC". The edition selection didn't have "Home" or "Pro" or "OEM" just "Windows 10". So will the "Windows 10" media work or do I need "Windows-10-Pro-21H2-OEM-Systembuilder.iso" for my key from OA3xOriginalProductKey to work? I'd go ahead and just try it, but it's a $200 price tag if I screw it up.

So anyone ACTUALLY try a OA3xOriginalProductKey key with a media-creation-media?

BTW, last time I tried an OEM key (sticker on laptop) with downloaded media it was about 10 years ago with Windows 8. It didn't activate so I had to buy a new copy. I tried the activation phone support, but they accused me of being a pirate and threatened to "turn me in". Not the best experience.

Win 10 - How can i disable Defender's automatic updating?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 01:23 AM PST

I created inbound and outbound rules in order to block every .exe in C:\Program Files\Windows Defender. In task schedule i disabled automatic scan and verification for defender because i saw somewhere that defender updates before automatic scan. But it updates after pc launch too. Defender moves my firewall rules into quarantine although i added keys and 32dword DisableRoutinelyTakingAction (yes, value is 1) in registry to disable quarantine.

Will i be able to delete updated files (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates) after i enter value 1 for DisableAntiSpyware?

    Update Windows machines centrally

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 01:23 AM PST

Hi, I'm a sys admin in my office. I manage about 20 Windows server (2016 and 2019) virtual machines and 20 Windows 10 workstations. I've tried to manage it centrally with MS SCCM but it is a pain and don't works at all.

My expectations was a tool that enroll all windows machines and update them (both windows AND every Microsoft product) ASAP, I don't care of "bad updates" (we backup every machine). It should be done periodically (1 time a week for example) or manually with a "single button" feature.

Great Reddit community, any suggestion? Of course also paid products, better if with lifetime license.

    Thanks!

Could all these signs point to a virus?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 01:15 AM PST

I've had this old windows 7 laptop since 2012, of course it runs slow now but still managed to work with the basic programs (office, chrome etc). I came home after some time, turns out my little brother was using the pc and suddenly nothing works. What is meant by that?

Windows explorer doesn't work, randomly restarts

Moving files crashes after some time, claiming there is a problem with input/output devices

IN SAFE MODE everything seemed to run fine, but then I started getting an error saying "windows must now restart because the DCOM server process launcher terminated unexpectedly"

Booting takes forever, I am always met with just black screen for several minutes.

Cmd takes years to run because epxlorer lags so much

dskchk found issues, but couldn't resolve because it was in read only mode. Scheduling a disk check after reboot did nothing.

Literally everything points to a virus in my opinion (I found some apps such as free robux hacks etc so yeah, I'm murdering my bro later on), but I can't even run antivirus or a scan using internet browser.

    What do?
