General, everyday use laptop for $800 CAD

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 09:30 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $800 CAD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Nothing refurbished or used.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would prioritize performance and battery life. I'm specially not interested in anything that's an Ultrabook or Chromebook unless you can really convince me, and I would prefer if the laptop didn't have anything like a touchscreen or anything too fancy.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not the most important. I'm not planning on travelling with this laptop, and if it's a little heavier and bigger, then that's that.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    I like a full-sized screen, 14" to 16" would be ideal.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

The most 'intensive' programs I'm planning to regularly use would be Microsoft Word and Spotify as well as having dozens of tabs open.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The laptop won't be used for gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like something with Bluetooth already integrated and built-in for the easy use of wireless headphones and earbuds, and a good quality screen. Beyond that, I'm specifically not interested in a laptop that has a touch screen or fingerprint reader if it can be avoided.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've had my old laptop—some nondescript, $400 CAD HP machine—for four going onto five years, and I'm looking for its replacement as a general, everyday use laptop. I'm hoping the new machine will last just as long or longer. I'd like something I could walk into a box store (Staples, Best Buy, The Source) and just get as opposed to something that needs to be ordered off of Amazon.

My laptop needs are basic, but I would still like something sleek and modern.

Laptop for 2D Game-Dev, Coding and light gaming

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 08:04 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I have around 1000€ available but would prefer to get something cheaper, for around 500€-800€
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
No, I would like to get a new one.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance is the most important for me. 2-in-1 would be nice, but probably too much to ask for at this price point. Battery Life does not need to be too high. 2-3hours should be fine, as most of the time I'll be next to some sort of power outlet. The build quality should be decent.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I will carry it around most of the time, but I am used to carrying my old 2.2 kg laptop. So anything around that weight class should be fine. It also does not need to be thin. I'm used to thicker laptops and do not mind that.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I am mostly going to use Unity (2D), Visual Studio, IntelliJ, PyCharm, and do some light gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mostly E-Sport titles like League of Legends, or some light games like Garden Story.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard would be great since I'll be typing a lot while coding.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I will use the laptop mainly while traveling by train, while being at the university, friends' places, or for LAN parties where we usually do not play any modern AAA games. Therefore, the battery life and weight are not too important. Also, I usually have a table or something to place the laptop on, so I don't have to place it on my lap.

    Looking for a school laptop

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:26 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
under 1000 eur, but might be able to go up to 1200 eur. I live in Finland, so availability of some laptops might be a bit worse
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
preferably not a refurbished or used laptop, it's really hard to find in Finland
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • battery life 2. build quality 3. performance. this laptop will be used for school, and I want to be able to use it a full day without it running out of power. As long as I can have a few light programs running, the performance is enough
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
it is important that the laptop is very portable
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14-15 pref, but 13 inch is fine if it's a resolution with more effective screen usage, such as a 16:10 res or if it is an exceptionally good screen 13 inch is fine
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      -
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
no mac, no Chromebooks. Battery, a good screen and a nice keyboard are important. A fingerprint reader would be cool. I don't really care if it is a touch screen. Longevity is somewhat important
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
right now the laptops im keeping an eye on is the lenovo x1 nano, and the acer swift x. Id buy the x1 nano if it was cheaper, and i am waiting for a sale. Pref 16 gb of ram for futureproofing. finding dell computers is pretty hard

    Wait or Not

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 09:09 AM PST

I actually need a gaming laptop this month or so. but I am having difficulty because there are no listings of the 2022 refreshes in my country. Should i wait for the listings of the refreshes? Is ZEN 3+ and DDR5 worth the wait? Because HP Victus 165Hz Ryzen 7 5800H, 3060 or Lenovo Legion 5 with similar specs are readily available.

Also which is better? HP Victus (165Hz 3060 model) , Legion 5 , Nitro 5... i heard there are memory issues (x16 vs x8) memory for Legion and i am not so sure about Acer as a brand. Legion is the most expensive (about 150$ more) and Nitro is the cheapest (about 100$ less) with similar specs. Victus lands between them at 1400$.. Should i consider these or wait as I asked previously.

Need to record/edit audio, run some heavy statistics, and play a game or two

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 01:43 PM PST

Hello! I am not a very computer-savvy person and I have been looking into options. Right now I have an original surface book and I really love everything I can do with it. It is very versatile, but it sucks for recording audio and it slows down a lot when I am working with it. I just got a chunk of change and I am excited to buy a new laptop that can do more. I am going to be doing a lot of research and need a computer that can handle running statistics programs (sometimes many at once) and also can record two tracks at once (microphone and computer audio). I really would like to play some games, too. I usually use stadia but I want to buy xbox game pass and play some games there, mostly older games like Fallout New Vegas and maybe a few newer games like Dead by Daylight and newer Bethesda-style games. I also would like to stick with Windows 10 if possible.

Anyway, I have been considering the Legion 5, and the Omen 16t-b000. I've also been considering the new Surface Book, or trying to find a Surface Book 3. I'm open to suggestions or any information about those options that you think I should know! Thank you!

Ill post the specs down below and please tell me if this is a good bang for the buck or if there are better options? (Ps I play league of legends so if this could run that fine that would be great)

Choosing between two Acer Aspire 5 models

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 01:31 PM PST

Hi Folks, This is an offshoot of a pervious thread. Can anyone help me choose between these laptops? Other than the obvious price difference, they differ in CPU (i5 vs Ryzen 5) and WIFI (wifi 6 vs wifi 5). I prioritize screen, speaker quality, fan noise, keyboard, and battery, in roughly that order.

My usage will be primarily video conferencing and web applications.

    A515-56-53J0

    I5-1135g7, 12GB RAM, 512GB SSD, WIFI 6, $650 CAD (Canada Computers)

    A515-45-R5LN

    Ryzen 5 5500U, 12GB RAM, 512GB SSD, WIFI 5, $770 CAD (Best Buy)

    Feedback welcome 🙂

$800 - $900 United States lightweight laptop for parent

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 09:41 AM PST

Hello everyone. I thank you in advance for your assistance in helping me find a laptop for one of my parents.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $800 - $900 in the United States

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No. Prefer new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Looking for a lightweight laptop with decent battery power. The laptop will be plugged in for 95% of its use. But when it is unplugged, it would be nice if it could hold a charge for a solid hour or so.
Also looking for a laptop that doesn't look like a spaceship (no weird colors or weird cover designs).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Somewhat important. The laptop will be sitting on my parent's lap (e.g., not on a desk) for everyday use. Do not want anything heavy or anything that gets hot or has fans that are loud.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Laptop will primarily be used for web browsing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Looking for something that does not get hot. This is important. Also don't want a laptop with fans that sound like a plane engine the whole time the laptop is on.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Looking for a basic but well made lightweight laptop that does not get hot that will last for 3 or 4 years.

Is this usable for web browsing? (12 yr old toshiba, t4400, 4gb ram)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 12:54 AM PST

Okay, so, unfortunately, my laptop might break soon. I have this option that is free, (needs a port repair, kinda complicated, takes a while, but not like extremely hard, and I could probably do), which will cost $7-$15, after taxes, shipping, etc. for the part. Anyways, it is a Toshiba Satellite 17.3 inch released in 2010, with a Pentium T4400, and 4gb ram, 250gb hard drive, I understand & fully expect it to be slow, but not like, 2007 netbook slow, like, it supports windows 10, I think, I've seen computers with the same cpu, and older ones on windows 10 just fine. I'll just use it for youtube, discord, reddit, roblox at 720p minimum settings, on lighter games (light for roblox) with nothing else running, 5-20fps at least, I hope. I mean, I am very broke and if my laptop breaks I do not want to buy a new one. it's rather bulky and I would rather buy a $60-$100 new 11 inch chromebook on a good deal, but I don't really know that I can afford it or not, but I can make do with the size, (I need a laptop, since sometimes I just can't be at my desk), as long as web browsing is not impossible. It's also a 1080p screen which is better than my 900p 19.5 inch desktop screen, so hooray, lol. Although I might run at a lower resolution, just to get better performance on roblox without having to change the settings to 720p natively (roblox does not allow you to change resolution) every time I play, hopefully 900p/768p is ok. Also don't wanna get used to 1080p, smaller screen, which will get my expectations higher, and make the 900p display look worse. I'm not sure how bad this cpu is.

I'm coming from a pentium silver, 4gb ram, at least the screen and storage (64gb vs 250gb) are an upgrade, but I know everything else will be pretty bad and worse in every way, just hoping for something ok. The low end games I'm talking about I get 40-60fps (capped at 60fps) on my laptop, different lower end games vary though. For perspective, I can run those games on minimum settings on a 480p smartphone at good enough performance, on a Qualcomm snapdragon 210 with 1gb ram, cpu released in 2015 as a low end cpu, I bought this for $15, 2 years ago.

    New laptop for home

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 01:12 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      Between $600-$1,000

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Fast—any personal computers I have bought always feel so slow compared to my work computer. Also, I have an old iPad that I don't use as it is super slow but I would like a laptop that would be as easy to use as an iPad.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not very important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Not very important as I have a separate monitor I can connect to

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I would like to be able photos I take w/ my camera but this is a hobby & not something I'm looking to invest a ton of money in. Same with video editing—what would I need for basic editing?

I limited my budget at $600 but I could go higher if I understood more of what I was purchasing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      N/A but I'll probably use a mouse & not a touchpad

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Last computer I bought was an HP laptop about 6 years ago. I rarely use it as I can't stand how slow it is. I use it for filing taxes & if I need to write a letter.
I use a Microsoft Surface for work & that is so much faster—I truly don't understand what makes a computer faster. I could increase my budget up to $1,000 but I'd have to know that I would be using it more frequently to make my life better.

Uni laptop (Business - Accounting/Finance) maybe gaming

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 12:33 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
    • $1000-1300 CAD, Buying in Canada. Could go higher if it's also a gaming one, but I hear gaming laptops are not that good
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**
    • Has to be a killer deal for refurb, No Used
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**
    • Build Quilty is the most important, as it will be moved around every day at Uni. Performance needs to be good, as I want something snappy, alongside a decent battery(View PDFS, Youtube and Spotify for 8 hours+)
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**
    • Don't really care, but I'd like to stay around average, not something crazy
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**At least 15", maybe 17"? I hear in Uni you can get away with a 17", but I don't know. Needs to stay portable.
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**If I can get into a gaming laptop that meets the battery and portable limits requirements, that'd be sick.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**
    • I usually play competitive games, like CSGO and Valorant. I've only ever played these games at all low settings around 60fps, so I'm not nit-picky, but if I do get a gaming laptop, I'd like to run the games at atleast mid settings and a steady 70-80fps.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**
    • Reliable build Quilty is the most important, I want something that will last. Good Keyboard. Upgradeable Ram. has a built-in blue tooth and an aux port.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**
    • If it's not a gaming laptop that's all good, as I want a good laptop first, the rest would be nice. I value build quality a lot, so if it's metal that would be nice, not cheap plastic.

looking for a laptop under $2k (preferably around 1.5k at most though) for undergrad!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$2000 usd, again would prefer 1.5k at the most - 2k is just the ABSOLUTE MAX
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
from highest to least: performance, build quality, form factor, battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
very important. i want it to be light and portable
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14-15. 13 at smallest
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
i definitely want the capacity for coding programs, photoshop, video editing programs, digital drawing programs. dont want a device that'll burn up and die the second i open any of these programs
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      no gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
definitely need touch screen. im also not the best with keeping my devices untarnished so build quality is important. a good pen is a plus. also i keep a lot of tabs open at once, and i definitely want a device that can handle that and stay FAST. also, i know i put battery life as my lowest priority, but i definitely want it to have at least a ~8 hour battery life. i always keep a charger handy so it's not the biggest thing, but i just want the battery to last in general lol

    Need a long-lasting laptop for future CS student - Price < $2000 - USA

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:51 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $2000; United States.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes, but I prefer new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
From most to least important: Battery life, performance, build quality, form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important at all.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13-14 inch with 16:10 or 3:2 aspect ratio.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Computer science stuff. I will probably compile programs.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
If I do game, it only needs to run esports titles. Not very important.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Because I'm coming from a Thinkpad X230T, the keyboard is very important. It also needs to have a metal build and some sort of biometric like IR or fingerprint. As long as the touchpad is not tiny, I'm okay with it. The battery should last over 8 hours doing word processing and web browsing. I would like to have an 8 core CPU too. Finally, it needs to stay cool enough that I can use it on my lap. 16GB RAM minimum.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I had a Zephyrus G14 2022, but it got too hot, and I had to return it. It might have been defective though, so I'm thinking of ordering another one. That device met all my requirements except I couldn't use it on my lap. Note that it has a dedicated GPU, but that is not a requirement. If I can have better battery life, I can live without the dedicated GPU just fine.

(United States) Looking for a gaming laptop for my girlfriend! [$1100 - $1300]

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:45 AM PST

Hello! As the title says, my girlfriend is getting more into gaming, and so I'm getting her a gaming/general use laptop for her birthday. Here's the form info.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1100-1300 USD, I'd prefer to keep on the lower end but I'm okay with splurging!

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but it would need to be like new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Nothing fancy needed, it will probably be plugged in wherever it goes. Prioritize performance over graphics, though a screen with a high refresh rate is a must for gaming.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

She likes a bigger laptop, so it is not an issue whatsoever

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

N/A, but high refresh rate and a larger screen is probably better for gaming

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, she going to be playing games like Overwatch, Elden Ring, Genshin Impact, Minecraft, and modded Stellaris

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

See above for games list, but she has told me she prioritizes performance over graphics. Preferably at least 60fps on good settings, but if that's not possible then prioritize performance!

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'm going to get her a separate (probably wireless) mouse, so the only thing would be a good keyboard.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Her favorite color is pastel pink, and she has said that she would REALLY love a pink and white computer! Perhaps a white one with one of those configurable backlit keyboards? Laptops are a bit out of my niche for what is possible, so please let me know if you want more information, or if something I've said isn't possible at my budget.

    Thank you so much!

ASUS E210MA vs. HP Stream 11? + other questions.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:11 AM PST

Hello. I haven't had a laptop for years, but now I found myself needing one. My needs are fairly simple. What I'm looking for is:

-1. Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, and two USB-A ports to connect to my old hardware.

-2. Built-in or free to download word processing and spreadsheet programmes.

-3. Longevity. My last laptop (which was my first) was by a now defunct company, which I managed to make last 8 years (with one system repair). I found one shop offering the ASUS with a free 2 year guarantee.

-4. A bit of space (not on cloud) to store a few hundred photos and short videos, perhaps to do some basic photo editing, and to be able to play Roblox with my nephew.

-5. Affordability, preferably well under £200 (new).

-6. To be able to simply browse online, stream videos, and do some online banking and shopping.

Product specifications can be found here and here

    Other questions:

    a) I was considering buying a Chromebook, but I was afraid of being very limited with what I can run and download. These laptops come with Windows 10 S, which I read is restrictive. Can S mode on these laptops be turned off (easily)?

    b) One thing that made me consider a Chromebook was not needing to buy antirivirus and office subscriptions? Can I make do without these? Are free versions sufficient for my needs?

Please do not recommend laptops costing more than what I can afford or not sold in store in the UK. Thanks in advance.

Need a laptop with a $900 CAD budget. I want to run games like minecraft, ds and 3ds emulator, and maybe valorant.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:04 AM PST

I need a laptop or a pc with a budget of $900. I want to be able to run games like minecraft, and Nintendo emulators. I also wanted to try valorant as I play games on console however it isn't necessary. Currently I have a 2012 MacBook Pro and it is completely dying out. The battery only last one hour and it is very slow. I want something that is less heavy and has at least 4 hours of battery life, while also being able to have 30-60 fps on games. If there is anything like this within my budget please let me know!

A (partial) replacement for a workstation.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 04:36 AM PST

So I had to leave my home due to the war in Ukraine, and left my PC workstation there, and I need some sort of mobile replacement. I'm not aiming to match my workstation in terms of performance but hoping the machine would be able to run simultaneously an IDE (Emacs), a couple of browsers with a ton of tabs, and say 2 VMs without hassle.

I'm looking for advice because I don't really have much time to do a proper research now, as everything is still in a crysis management mode here, while I need a machine ASAP since much of my life, both professional and personal, is locked to it. I'm not doing anything super intensive, mostly programming and web dev. And I'm not going to play games.

    My requirements:

15 inch screen. I want some decent quality, but I'm going to use it mostly with an external monitor.

AMD CPU and no Nvidia as I'm going to run Linux

    SSD

    16GB RAM

    4+ USB ports

Battery life is not terribly important.

Weight and thinness are not important either.

Don't care about any bells and whistles like touch screens, finger-print readers, etc.

I'm not willing to go over $1500 for this, but I have no idea whether this is a realistic budget for my requirements. I also realize that due to the chaos in the country it might be difficult to get the exact model or parts, so it would be great to have a range of options.

In any case, I'd appreciate any pointers and recommendations. Thanks.

Looking for laptop that will run Sims 4, all expansions + CC & Mods

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 07:46 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      Up to $1500

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Not really, poor past experiences.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life isn't a make or break for me. I'm a dog trainer, so anything that has additional dust protection would be ideal.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I need a decent amount of portability to bring to training seminars to take notes.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Larger than 13.4"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Sims 4, all expansions, CC & a decent number of mods

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Would prefer to run at Ultra (60+ FPS?)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Would prefer Windows OS. I also have quite a few videos of training to upload from my phone, so storage is key.

Thank you in advance for input! I have not purchased a laptop in 10 years so I'm a little overwhelmed by the options.

Need a Gaming laptop around $1300

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 07:36 AM PST

Budget $1300, purchasing in the US Mainly needed for gaming, content consumption etc Size : Anything from 14" to 17" is fine Battery life isnt much of a factor Resolution : Would like a high refresh rate screen even if that compromises resolution, might buy a bigger 2nd monitor later which would probably be high res lower refresh rate Weight : Not a factor, can be heavy Build Quality/Warranty should be decent, Ill be purchasing this from the US but having it brought over to my country, my previous laptop had a hinge issue that bit me in the ass, its now just a flat pc basically, and I cant use the keyboard or screen Thanks in advance!

    Laptop for data science/bioinformatics

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 07:18 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    <=$1500 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Possibly if sig savings/good lifespan

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life is important but not everything (I am honestly used to just sitting plugged in).
Build quality is very important, I want something sturdy that can travel and that will last a while.
Form factor is less important. It would be used as more of a traditional laptop.
Performance is important to me, especially because I deal with big datasets/computations. A lot can get done on the cloud, so more moderate-sized data science-y stuff (think datasets ~1.5-5Gb) with LOTS of R code is what I do locally.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lower weight is nice, thin-ness I don't really care

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Less than 16 inches I think for more portability, but open to larger sizes.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Coding = sublime text, Rstudio, Python, Office software, Cloud stuff (docker/google cloud/possibly AWS), Command line stuff. LaTeX. Writing. Lots and lots of PDFs. Web browsing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not gaming

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is nice. USB3 / C inputs are helpful. Reliability is most important. An ethernet port would be nice so I can upload datasets faster to the cloud but not super important.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Just used a macbook pro that was souped-up and bought with grant money for the last 6 years. It is on its last legs. I'm open to a non-mac for sure, and I would probably make it a dual boot with Ubuntu to -make my life easier informatics/coding-wise. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Laptop for Home Business & AutoCAD

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 06:54 AM PST

Hello, Looking to start a home consulting business and need a new laptop for mainly AutoCAD. Also might be used for gaming at some point.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1500-$2000 USD, US. Understand if I need to go higher

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Would rather buy new

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Quality/performance probably highest, then battery life, then form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too important. I would rather it not be super clunky though.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    ~15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

AutoCAD would be the main program, along with a bit of gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I think 60 FPS would be fine. Games like rocket league, borderlands, etc.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

good keyboard and build quality are desirable. touch-screen/finger-print reader is not too important. Shouldn't need optical drive. Would probably be used with a mouse mostly.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I priced out a nice Dell XPS but it was almost $3,000 USD and I'd like to get something a bit more cost effective.

Need a Laptop in the range of 600€-1000€

    Posted: 06 Mar 2022 06:34 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

600€-1000€ (Might increase if the value of the laptop is good for its price but might increase by 200€ at most)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Don't prefer it but ,Depending on circumstances, might.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • battery life isn't an issue, not cheap built quality (need it to last a long time), performance should be bangs for its bucks (nothing too crazy but as long as it works fine compared with similar priced laptop, it is ok), mostly considering the processor ofc. RAM is secondary to my usage. IDC about form factor as long as it works.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

They are not important. Ofc not a Boulder either.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Coding is the priority here ofc since I need it for my university. However... I do play a LOT of games, mostly games like Doom eternal, valorant, Nintendo switch emulator (Yea Yea I play Pokemon so plz no bullying), Plasmaphobia with friends, borderlands 3, Hitman trilogy.... Damn I play too much games and I haven't finished yet :(

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Doom eternal at 60 stable FPS (need to see the demons die a painful death firsthand) and plasmaphobia at 30-25 ish FPS.... it's enough

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Nothing that I can note no

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • I am using this for my university so nothing too flashy (tho i do like to impress my friends) but that isn't a priority. Also, my mom does hate me having a Gaming Laptop so if it looks too "Gamey", I'll be crapped (hopefully if it is then I'll be able to smooth talk it out since i got her to pay 30% of the money and I need her approval) but it isn't a priority too. Lastly, I do have a cloud gaming service so it might not be necessary that it is a gaming laptop but then again a gaming laptop would be nice to have...
