How do I install Mint to an external SSD? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 09:16 PM PST I have a SanDisk 1 TB external SSD I want to install Linux Mint to such that when the drive is plugged in, I can boot from it. I already have a USB I can install the OS from, I just don't really know what I'm doing beyond the live session, and I don't want to erase what I already have. I currently use Windows 10, and I want to be able to use either OS. I also haven't done a single thing with the SSD yet, not even installing whatever program came with it, if that matters. Or am I doing this completely wrong? [link] [comments] |
Can you boot on an SSD over USB as a main drive for the OS? Posted: 03 Mar 2022 01:32 AM PST Hy guys... It's all in the title... Any ideas?... Would like to use an external SSD over USB as a main drive, and then use my current sluggish hard drive for backup ans sync... (Ubuntu variant, with a KDE desktop). Would this work? Thank you in advance... Cheers! [link] [comments] |

creating a 64-bit virtual machine Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:08 AM PST Hi, is it possible to create a virtual machine with 64-bit architecture using gnome-boxes or virt-manager? I have to run Windows on it for software compatibility in school. VirtualBox might work too, but I'm personally not super familiar with it. Thanks [link] [comments] |
My PC crashes before the boot starts Posted: 02 Mar 2022 10:19 PM PST I am new to Linux and trying to dual boot my PC using a USB stick. I have partitioned 45 GB of space. Fast boot and secure boot are also disabled. I opened the boot menu and tried a couple of distros. When I press graphical install, it waits for a few seconds then immediately it shuts down. I couldn't find a solution online, can someone help me? I can pass more data if needed. my computer is: Casper Nirvana C650.8550-8D50X-S-F Intel Core i7 8550U 8GB Ram 240GB SSD MX130 Freedos [link] [comments] |

Samba permissions mess - can't write anything (from Windows) Posted: 03 Mar 2022 01:54 AM PST Hello, I have a game server running on my machine, and I often move files and folders around. So I decided to use samba (version 4.7.6-Ubuntu) to create a shared folder (which contains the game server) - and I can't write anything. The folder is located at /home/locale/Documents. locale is the username of the account I use to log physically on my machine, and is pretty much the "admin" account. (Note : they don't have root privileges, I'm not that dumb) To connect to that folder, I use another account, named John. (The username of my Windows account). I can connect to the share from Windows without any trouble, using the credentials from John (inputing the Unix password) ; but I cannot write anything. This is what I have in my smb.conf for the folder : I've seen plenty of people on the internet using 644 or 755 as a create mask - I don't want that. The directories set in locale/Documents are all set at 775, and I don't want to change that. John is of course part of the What I should do ? I am really forced to go full on 777 on my folder in order to make this thing work ? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Strange shapes and lines appear behind my window buttons in PopOS- what did I do to cause this? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 09:30 PM PST I'm 99% sure this is my fault: A weird red shape and some random lines are appearing behind my close, minimize, and maximize buttons in Pop OS. Can anyone help me find what's causing this? [link] [comments] |
I don't have the permissions to open a windows formatted external usb after switching, what do I do? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 05:57 PM PST Hello! I've got a shitty computer that I decided to switch to linux mint. Before uninstalling windows, I put all my stuff on an external harddrive. Now that I have linux installed I can't open it. Well, now I have but I can't view anything. Is there any way I can change permissions it or should I find a different method to put the data on? Cheers [link] [comments] |

Linux File Permissions (ACL), when changed, web server stops functioning! Posted: 02 Mar 2022 01:49 PM PST Hello! (THIS QUESTION IS SOLVED, PLEASE MOVE ON, OR READ MY SOLUTION IF YOU NEED HELP) I am running a web server inside of a docker container on Open Media Vault (OMV). The docker container is bound to a shared folder in the following directory: So, the folder httpd2daniel is bound to inside of the docker container. There are multiple user accounts. Mine: erik A friend's: daniel The site is supposed to be for my friend. Inside of OMV, I am in the admin group, he is not. It is supposed to be his page. He does not have the rights to create or delete a file within the webserver. Whenever I look at the httpd2daniel folder, these are the permissions I have on a test file: His permissions show: As far as I can see, they are the same. Yet whenever I try to create a file: This happens. Within Open Media Vault there are two ways to give people / users permission to access / view something. He and I certainly are allowed to view the FTP share, otherwise we could not have accessed it, this can be decided within this menu: However, there is also the "ACL" menu, which is a lot more complex. However, whenever I change anything here and press "apply", the web server (https://daniel.uden.ai/ ) will return a "permission denied" 401 error page. For example, if I do the following: The web server returns: Any idea on how to fix this? I think by giving myself and the other user account the permission of viewing the page, or rather making us the owner, we in turn remove the permission / ownership of the web server service, yet I have no clue how we can both have the rights to edit and view the files inside of that folder / share? Any idea? EDIT: Found the error. Within the ACL I removed the permission for anonymous users to view files (thinking this would be unnecessary, since I did not want any anonymous users anyway) which completely forgets that anyone accessing the webpage would be seen as an anonymous user. It was not the web service that was revoked permission, but rather every "anonymous" user which the ACL removed permissions to view / execute within that dirtectory. [link] [comments] |
Best way to "play games that wont run at all on linux" Posted: 02 Mar 2022 04:49 PM PST Basically, my pc some time ago started to become a bit laggy, and now its becoming worse and worse, but it only happens on windows -.- and im really starting to hate a ton on windows, but i have a problem that most gamers and crazy people have, compatibility issues, because in my case, i like to try stuff, like making some weird/useless program just because yes, learn game hacking, learn ethical hacking, learn modding, etc ,etc, the type of stuff where you have to download ton of programs and do a ton of search, and in most cases, this programs dont have a Linux version and some of them with wine/lutris/proton wont work at all, so my question is, is there anyway i can run them kinda "native" and with a good performance (since i want to also play a game on it)???? I know about setting up a Windows 10 VM with a GPU Passthrough, ive tried this before but i wasn't able to, and i still have to launch it everytime i want to do stuff like that (which is very often) and the only benefit of it, would be the disk space. I have a 240GB SSD + 1TB HDD (most common setup ever :V) and i have popos and windows 10 dual booted, but the space starts to be very "tight" on ssd i only have 20gb left, and on HDD i only have 190GB, and because i had removed some games. I dont know if what i want is even possible, but would like to know your solutions/alternatives. Thks in advance [link] [comments] |

Help me understand this awk one-liner Posted: 02 Mar 2022 01:15 PM PST awk '{$5="test" FS $5}1' FS=, OFS=, test.txt I use this to insert a new column with the value "test" into the 5th field of a CSV and push the remaining fields to the right. I understand the basics of awk. I know $5 is the field and FS is the special variable holding the delimiter. What I don't understand is the following:
