Serial number working between different versions of windows (7, 8, 10)?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2022 02:47 PM PST

Hi. I have had that licensed windows 7 x64 pro. Now, I got a Ryzen 2200G system and was unable to run windows 7 anymore. So, I downloaded windows 10 x64 and used my old serial number, and to some my surprise it took it and successfully activated.

Now, I had another old PC. It used to have XP, but previous owner upgraded to 8 (serial numbers are different). I wanted to try to upgrade it with Windows 10 usb from under Windows. Ran setup.exe, but when it asked for serial and I have put 8's serial it didn't accept.

So, when can I reuse my windows serials? Does it depend on year (7, 8, 10) or version (oem, home, pro)? What if I do clean installation on windows 10 on my 8 machine? Would it accept 8's serial? Is it legit according to Microsoft license?

    Swapping boot Drive letters

    Posted: 08 Mar 2022 06:18 PM PST

I just cloned my C drive to an external SSD drive and I would like to instead of going into the BIOS setting my external SSD drive as my boot up Drive just make my SSD drive my C drive. Is this possible and if so can anyone Point me into the direction where I may find instructions on doing it? I've tried changing the letter in Disk Management but I keep getting a message saying that it was unable to perform that action.

Docker under Windows / how to run Checkmk on Windows

    Posted: 08 Mar 2022 08:32 AM PST

    Hi folks,

I spent new year with my parents and wanted to see, if get Checkmk to run on an old Windows laptop. It actually works, and I wrote a tutorial about it that finally got published: https://www.howtoforge.com/running-checkmk-under-windows-in-a-docker-container/

Checkmk is Linux-based and for larger Windows-only environments, probably the Checkmk appliance would be a better choice, but for a test run, this turned out to be great. Thus, I wanted to share that with you and hear your thoughts.

Do you guys use Docker under Windows? Does that work for you?

Does someone know the name of this old Windows software?

Does someone know the name of this old Windows software?

It was popular in the late 90s to early 2000s. It was something like a network/internet monitoring software. It showed all the internet traffic of the PC and it was showing like colored bars for each file that was downloaded or uploaded and I think the download speed. For example, if you were opening a website, it would show like progress bars for all the files that were loaded for that website, with the name of the files shown in those progress bars. The bars looked something like on the image and were shown all the time, either on the top or the bottom of the Windows interface (I can't remember exactly). The app had a darkish/black interface.

New user coming over from MacOS, what should I expect?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2022 07:43 AM PST

I've used MacOS since 2017, and I've recently switched to Windows 11 because I felt like a change and I love it! Now what should I expect?

I've already transferred my data, installed a good AntiVirus. And if you say I'll miss the wallpapers from OS X, it's not like there's plenty of images of the default wallpapers.

My PC specs: RAM: 2 64GB RAM sticks, meaning 128 GB of RAM Graphics Card: nVidia Geforce RTX 3080 (not the Ti) Storage: 4TB SSD (2 more than my M1 Max Macbook)

Can I copy Windows 10 Updates to another computer?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2022 07:29 AM PST

So the use case is. I am given multiple laptops that have windows 10 and need the exact same updates. I have built 5 laptops and updated via Wifi which all kill the bandwith and I cant help but think that I could download the files from a finished laptop and just paste them onto the unfinished laptops and save myself a few hours waiting for all of them to download slowly.

I have 20+ more laptops to build. The first 5 took about 6 hours just waiting on the exact same windows updates

Is this possible? I think transferring from a USB would take minutes for each laptop and save me so much time waiting for each laptop to slowly download. There is no difference to the configuration of these laptops

    Thank you for your help!
