Posted: 03 Mar 2022 05:56 AM PST Hi, I've been mostly happy with my TP-Link Deco E4 setup with the exception of the firmware's inability to resolve local hostnames. It apparently works in Windows, but not on Linux/Mac, and in general the UI and admin options are limited. I now need a replacement as my internet speed's jumped to 400Mbps, and the E4 doesn't have a gigabit port. Which mesh system will let me rename clients and allow them to be pingable, and have a decent web UI rather than just an app? I used to use Tomato-flavoured firmwares on my old Linksys but its wifi was useless in our house. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Lost connection to my NAS after factory defaulting my networking equipment Posted: 03 Mar 2022 07:17 AM PST I know what you're thinking, and no, my subnet did not change after restoring to factory defaults. My NAS has a static IP of 192.168.1.33 set to it on a 192.168.1.0/24 subnet. Long story short- I lost management to my Unifi equipment so I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the unifi controller and factory defaulting everything to gain management back. After factory defaulting everything and getting everything set back up I logged into the unifi controller and made sure that DHCP was set up and using a pool of 192.168.1.34-254. I do not see my NAS on the device list. My switch and server both have blinking link lights as if they're transmitting traffic. I tried SSHing into my switch to check the MAC table, but the unifi switch I have (US-8-150W) doesn't seem to have the capability of showing the MAC table (I hope I'm wrong though). In addition to the Unifi switch I also have an AP-AC-Lite and a USG-3P, and all are running on their latest firmware versions. My NAS is just an old tower running on xpenology but in addition to just being a file server, it also hosts PLEX. I was hoping to be able to avoid this because of how much of a hassle it would be, but if needed I can drop xpenology for ubuntu and switch to sambashare. But does anyone have any idea of what might be happening here? Any suggestions on what I can do to restore connectivity? [link] [comments] |
Not getting speeds client is paying for Posted: 02 Mar 2022 09:22 AM PST I'm the home automation guy at a job who also set up their internal network. These guys are paying 1500 a month for gigabit speeds here in Montana, and had fiber ran to the house. Directly out of their adtran 5660 into our laptop, not even going in through our internal network, we are only pulling speeds max 350 mb/s, but ranges from that all the way down to 40 mb/s. CenturyLink (the ISP) brought an iperf box that they connected to directly from their side and said they are pulling 950 mb/s, then pretty much told us there's nothing they can do. Unfortunately we were the ones who got stuck with the issue, as the client thinks it's our fault, but even bypassing our own network and going to their adtran hardwired, we're still only getting 45-350 mbs. I think CenturyLink is bullshitting us, any suggestions on how to handle this is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Two routers connected in series - lower throughput and higher latency, is there a better solution? Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:11 AM PST Hi guys! My desktop is currently connected like this: Fiber cable -> ONT -> Ethernet cable -> PPPoE Router -> Ethernet cable -> Netgear Router configured in AP mode -> Ethernet cable -> my desktop. The Ethernet cable in bold is the one connecting my living room to my bedroom. This is because the fiber cable comes into my living room and my desktop is in my bedroom, and I wanted an Ethernet connection for better performances. I notice that I get lower throughput on my desktop (750 Mbit/s) compared to my server which is directly connected with Ethernet to the PPPoE router (950 Mbit/s). Could my Netgear router (an old D6200) be the bottleneck here? I was thinking of trying with connecting my desktop to a switch (which is connected to my PPPoE router), bypassing the Netgear router which might struggle with my gigabit connection, especially when maxing the connection from my desktop (lower throughput and latency goes pretty high, which doesn't happen on my server). Is there a better solution here? I don't think I could connect a switch directly to the ONT and then use two PPPoE routers, because I don't think I can have two PPPoE connections simultaneously. Would a simple, unmanaged "dumb" switch be enough in my bedroom? Does specs even matter for a switch, as long as it's Gigabit? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2022 05:16 PM PST So my issue is that i'm trying to host a Minecraft server for all my friends, for some reason the server requires to open the port 25565 specifically (apparently, because if I use another one it wont even let me connect locally) (tried other ones but it seems to fail when binding the port to the server idk why and i'm still unable to open them successfully for some reason according to port checker tools), so I port forward the port on my router's page, allow connections through that port trough the firewall (even tried with firewall off) (you can see the config of both inbound and outbound on the post) and it lets me connect locally to my server, but my friends can't connect from the outside (through public ip:port) and port checker tools say that the port is closed (regardless if the server service is running or not) and I really can't think of what could be causing this issue, could anybody help? Home Wifi-Network is not acting like it should Posted: 03 Mar 2022 06:09 AM PST Let me preface my question by saying that I just moved into a new apartment with roommates a few months ago. One roommate already had a 1GB Fios plan (house is wired for it) so we just took on half the cost and have been using that. However, his hobby is home networks, and he's done a lot of customizations to the network. From what my unexperienced eye can tell, he's ported his Fios router into a Dream Machine, and has the network setup behind multiple ports and clients. This is great for him, as he has the router right near his room and has run Cat-6 ethernet cable throughout his room to his computers. He reports speeds near 1gb up & down. However, I like to game occasionally on a console, and whatever he is done seems to have metered the connection speeds. Due to our apartment placement, my console is placed ~20 feet away from the router with no wall or furniture obstructions between. My console reports speeds of ~75mb down and ~45mb up; gaming is laggy. Holding a personal device such as a phone or computer right next to the console and running a speed test yields speeds of ~400mb down and ~380mb up, much more inline with what's to be expected for the internet plan, connection type, and distance from the router. I've moved the console to test it right next to the router, as well as running a separate test when it was hooked up via an ethernet cable– no real change was observed in up/down speeds. I've gone through the help program with my console maker and they wanted me to try porting my console on the router, but he refuses to do it citing security concerns. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would buying a separate router help? Can you have two routers running at the same physical location in a house or would that cause interference? tl;dr **Roomate has heavily tweaked the network, and something he's done is blocking and/or slowing down my console's connection speeds while favoring other types of devices. Usb hub with ethernet crashes home network. Posted: 03 Mar 2022 05:52 AM PST New to posting on forums but this really threw me off and there's little information online about this subject. I bought a usb hub for my Chromecast with Google TV and wanted a usb hub so I could connect to ethernet and also plug in camera for Duo and usb storage and so forth. When i plug my ethernet cable into the hub, my whole network crashes and won't come back up until I unplug the cable from hub and restart my router. When I 1st plug it up, it works fine for several minutes, shows a usable IP address and works like it should and within 3-10 minutes my whole network crashes, WiFi and LAN device. I'm so lost. I even unplugged everything and reconnected all my devices one by one to make sure that this usb hub is the issue. Does anybody have any insight? I know I could just keep using wifi or even return the hub and try another one, but I really want to know what would cause this to happen and would love if someone could help me find a solution so I dont have to return the hub and keep hunting for a compatable hub that works with Chromecast. I did research before purchasing this hub and alot of people recommended and claimed it worked for their Chromecast as long as you use a bigger power brick to power the hub + Chromecast. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME! MODEL: VEMONT Premium 5-in-1 Type-C Hub (#VE-3108) [link] [comments] |

Alder Lake + Mellanox CX-3 10 GbE NIC = Weird Happenings Posted: 03 Mar 2022 05:13 AM PST Some background: I decided to upgrade from my old system to Alder Lake. Like many of you I use a DAC to connect to my home server for faster transfers. I've been using this admittedly older but still fully functional Mellanox CX-3 on my previous system for several years w/o issue. Issue: For reasons I can't explain, if this card is installed in my system and all of my CPU's cores are active I'm met with continuous BSOD's regarding thread exception errors. Now, if I go into my BIOS and disable 2 E-cores, the system boots perfectly and the Mellanox card functions normally. My troubleshooting that brought me to my concussion:
Successful boot with 2-Cores disabled (CX-3 card is working normally as well)
Successful boot (all cores active) w/o Mellanox card installed:
So what then, is this purely a case of legacy hardware being incompatible with Alder Lake due to driver limitations? Did I miss anything? Maybe it's just time for a new card? Any input is appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2022 04:50 AM PST I'm not sure what the best course of action is, I have alot of smart home devices hooked up to my router plus 2 people at home and it crashes during peak usage. Would a second router help or what can I do to stop this? [link] [comments] |
Do all cat6 cables support 10Gbps at less than 55m? Posted: 03 Mar 2022 12:48 AM PST The title pretty much sums up my question. I am planning to buy this dlink Cat6 cable: https://its.dlink.co.in/product.php?ref=9 The product page and spec mention that the cables "Comply with Cat6 specifications". But they also say that "CAT6 UTP Cable supports Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Base-T) standard". I tried contacting their customer support regarding my query but they were unreachable. All my end devices are within 55m of wiring range of the next hop device/router/switch. Is it safe to assume that this or any Cat6 cable under 50m length can do 10gbps with the appropriate routing/switching hardware. Thank you for your help. PS: noob here. [link] [comments] |

Guest network prevented from access critical server Posted: 02 Mar 2022 08:04 PM PST Am looking for a clever way to limit my guest network access, but still allow them to get to our Pi-hole server. First... my Pi-hole server last octet is .3 That's how I have the network, and then it dawned on me why our work computers, configured to connect to the guest network, can't get DHCP addresses or resolve hostnames. The wireless router is doing was it was told: don't let those dirty malware-ridden guest computers access any computers on the network (and the guest Wi-Fi password is WAY easier to enter than the regular Wi-Fi password). Aaaaaaand that would included .3, the Pi-hole DNS/DHCP server. So, computer connects to the Wi-Fi router (easy), but when it sends out a DHCP request, it is met with silence. No DHCP assignment and no DNS. This really is a case of me shooting myself in the foot, networkingly-speaking. Now I'm going to need to figure out if there is a clever way around this (at the moment, I'm doubtful). Anybody have any elegant solutions for this? [link] [comments] |
Turning on PC remotely outside the home network Posted: 03 Mar 2022 03:10 AM PST I've been trying too set up remote wake on lan from outside of my network for a couple of days now but keep running into walls, i have port forwarded port 9 udp on my router and set it too my pc's local ip, using the android wake on lan app and set my MAC IP and domain IP. Noob question: What's the actual danger of exposing port 22 to internet? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 12:53 PM PST So I want to access my Windows machine via SSH from outside my LAN. I port-forwarded port 22 on my router. On my machine, I started up Windows' in-built OpenSSH server, I checked that my firewall allows it through port 22 (although idk how to check if anything else is allowed through). For added safety, I disabled password authentication so I'll only be able to use keys to authenticate. My question is: Does this pose any intrinsic security risk? Everyone always says "never expose port 22 to the internet," but if SSH has strong authentication, then that risk is neutralized. Is there anything else bad actors can do with access to port 22 that I should worry about? [link] [comments] |
Raspberry Pi over SSH not working after a while Posted: 02 Mar 2022 04:35 PM PST I set up a headless raspberry pi with my macbook using this tutorial. I'll exit ssh, leave the pi on overnight, and ssh won't work the next day. I'll type "ssh [pi@raspberrypi.local](mailto:pi@raspberrypi.local)" and it'll just hang on a blank line. The only fix is restarting my macbook, where after it'll immediately work. This makes me think the problem isn't with the raspberry pi. Specs below: Raspberry Pi 4B, running 64-bit Raspbian 2015 Macbook Pro, MacOS Monterey (same problem on Big Sur) [link] [comments] |
Need a recommendation for a good modem and router Posted: 02 Mar 2022 09:43 PM PST Hey there, I'm moving to Tulsa in the next couple of weeks, and I'm in need of a recommendation for a good modem and a router. I'm planning on getting Cox's gigablast internet, and mostly plan to use it for gaming and streaming (both watching things like Netflix and Hulu and doing my own streaming on Twitch). Wanna get a router as well for my phone and tablet, only do light gaming on that if anyone has any recommendations there as well. [link] [comments] |
Would Orbit mesh router be good for my house? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 07:29 PM PST
Problem: The router is in the garage and thus WiFi connection is so bad - I get between 15-35mbps via wireless as opposed to 100mbps vis wired connection. Therefore, I'd like to set up a mesh router for better wireless reception. My questio is, 1) which mesh router would you recommend? 2) someone recommended that I should use Orbit. Can Orbit master be connected to one of the LAN socket in the room? Or shall I put it in the garage connected to the NBN box directly? I'm concerned that I wouldn't get good speed if I put the master in the garage. 3) the other person recommended Google Nest Wifi.. again, can I connect its "master" to the LAN socket in the room, rather than in the garage? I need help finding an internet provider that will work for my needs. Posted: 02 Mar 2022 09:16 AM PST So first off I'd like to begin by saying that I am a 3D Environment Designer and general internet freelancer and require a stable internet connection to both work and provide income. My current internet situation is edging on unusable. I live in an area where there aren't many providers who service my address (even though I've seen xFinity trucks less than half a mile down the road), if I had to explain my address, it branches off the main road for about a quarter mile (there's only one other property on this road) and probably won't see a fiber or broadband connection for the next 50 years. The advertised speed for my internet plan is 10 mbps but in reality I've found that to be much lower. Simple files take 5+ minutes to upload, online gaming is impossible, and if anything else is on the network using bandwidth - whether it's my roommate, or the home office gets a phone call, my connection pretty much drops all together (and yes, I'm connected directly to the router through ethernet cable). I have been pretty much unable to do business for the past several months and have lost a lot of potential income as a result, I can't do video calls or group meetings, even VoIP on platforms like discord does not work. I have been looking for alternatives for the past several months. Due to my general situation and the housing market - moving simply isn't an option for me. I have looked into 4G LTE home internet services from providers such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and all of them say that internet is unavailable at my address, which makes no sense to me because their hotspots should be able to connect to their network anywhere there's a signal. I looked into Satellite internet, but with 700+ ms ping I'm still not able to conduct business (and starlink says it won't be available here until late 2023), and while I do have my mobile hotspot I'm only given 15 GB of usable data (before they throttle my service to 600kbps) and because I can't directly connect my phone to my computer, I still have severe ping issues. I'm at a point here where I don't know if there are any options for me to get a stable and usable internet connection. I can deal with an abysmal download speed, but what I can't deal with are major connection drops and lag spikes at a less than 5 minute interval. Are there options I haven't explored yet? Or is my best bet to contact my provider (CenturyLink) and beg them to stabilize my connection? As previously said moving isn't an option for me and I desperately need some advice on how to get some stable internet at this address. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Getting 1/4 the speed on secondary node of mesh setup at home (Wireless backhaul) Posted: 03 Mar 2022 12:15 AM PST Main Node: 40-50mbps DL Secondary Node: 10-20mbps DL Hell, I even get higher DL speed connected to the main router in the same area as the 2nd node. More info: Living in a concrete house. The 2 nodes (Tenda Nova Mw3) are 1 floor apart. Is distance between the 2 nodes the reason for such difference in speed? If so, is adding another 1 node in between the two help? Note: I'll only consider ethernet/wired as last resort. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Mar 2022 12:08 AM PST I'm currently using my ISP's router (Hitron CGNM-2250) and looking for a budget upgrade. My logic is to upgrade the wireless AP since I assume that's usually the bottleneck. I understand that ethernet or even powerline is the way to go but unfortunately due to building restrictions, I am unable to do so. My idea is to buy a wireless AP that will deliver a better signal from the ground floor to upstairs. I chose a wireless AP over a repeater because the router is directly above my room and I've heard bad things about repeaters degrading performance, ultimately not making it not worth its salt. Ubiquiti's AP (Amazon) seems to fit this criterion and sounds like it would be a decent upgrade. Any suggestions/feedback would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to speed up my home internet service? Posted: 02 Mar 2022 11:16 AM PST I live in a rural area, so connection is very costly while my internet performs less than 30% of the national average. I hate it because I pay upwards of 100 a month for 10 mbps while I never get the full 10. It tests at a measly 6-8 mbps on a regular. But when I check my phone, I see that I can possibly get 65 mbps but I believe the router that is provided by the company has a limit set. Is there a way around to speed up my internet anyway possible without shelling out more money? Also sorry ahead of time if this isn't the place for this type of post. [link] [comments] |
