    Internet speed drops

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 01:31 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

Currently in the proces of switching internet providers. While doing a speed test i only got about 2-3 mbps (should have around 150) so i called the help service. They couldn't find any problems and after restarting the modem my speed seemed fine (around 140). Soon after problems started again so i did some tests as i haven't stopped my other internet connection yet. So when i do a speedtest with an internet cable on my laptop directly connected to either modem i have my full internet speed (88 or 140) but as soon as i connect my 24 port switch to a different port on the modem and i do another speedtest directly connected with my laptop as before to the modem my speed drops to a couple mbps (happens to both modems. So i'm wondering could it be the ethernet cable from the modem to the switch or one from the switch that goes the different places in the house or could it be the switch itself causing the problems? Thanks!

    Bad Cable Router

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 01:21 PM PST

Old sprint averplus gate to a old looking Linksys router but it's cabled in to my direct TV boxs. I want to upgrade my router but keep the cable. Most the good deal and affordable routers I'm wanting seem to be missing the output for cable and I've heard you can make the old router a access point. Can I do this and have Internet run to the old router cable output and have it work?

    Split 10 gbps port

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 01:13 PM PST

Hi there. My current internet plan is 1.5 Gbps down, my router only has 1 10gbps port that I would like to split and share between two computers. Is Ethernet, any way to do this, allow for both computers to pull up to 1.5 gbps. Only need a two splitter, I've looked online but can't find anything that would work.

    Thank you!

    Location for network panel

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 12:56 PM PST

Our house is about 20 years old (~1999 build), so a few phone lines and a fair amount of coax (to all three bedrooms as well as the living room and family room), one ethernet jack from the ISP, and a separate ethernet jack from the TV provider (same company actually). No structured wiring cabinet.

I'm looking at a couple potential locations for a network / wiring cabinet. Thinking either a structured wiring cabinet, or maybe a 6U or 9U enclosed rack. The office is out, due to low/negative wife-approval-factor. Might be able to negotiate for a spot in the laundry room... maybe. The attached garage would be easy enough, but the temps can swing a bit when the doors open/close. Possibly more of a concern in the summer with temps over 100F? Lastly there's access under the house via a 'crawl' space (~6ft ceilings, dirt floor). We don't live in an especially humid region, but it's generally more so down there than anywhere else.

As far as distance goes, it's kind of a toss-up between the crawl space and the others. About half or two-thirds of the cable drops would have to go down through there anyway, but a few will have to go up through a wall to the attic areas.

Thoughts on going with one location versus the others? Or using a SWC in the garage or laundry room vs. an enclosed rack? While we aren't planning on moving for a while, this isn't our 'forever home' where I don't care what the next buyer might want.

    Thanks!

Help picking new router for home network

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 12:44 PM PST

hello im trying to upgrade my router, im currently using a Qotom-Q555G6-S05 as my router with an install of pfsense 2.6 on it. it handles my dhcp addressing, openvpn for local access and is my main gateway.

im looking to upgrade because my internet plan (xfinity) has been upgraded to their 1200mbps plan. my problem is that the device im using now isn't able to route faster than 550mbps. i can get 960 mbps with iperf to and from the gateway but if it needs to route to another interface its not that fast.

i was looking at the ubiquiti dream machine pro since its pretty affordable and has 10G ports and i may want ubiquity APs in the future. im just not sure if it can be an openvpn or wireguard vpn server.

i would prefer to stay with pfsense since i enjoy the fact that im familiar with its setup and configuration. and the device im using it low power. but am willing to move to a new environment if the features i need are there

is anyone aware of a device that can route more than a gig and has 2.5g or faster network ports?

my modem is a Motorola MB8611 and has a single 2.5g port. i would prefer not to spend more than 600$ for it.

How to improve WiFi in certain rooms?

How to improve WiFi in certain rooms?

How can I improve WiFi in rooms 2 and 3 as shown in the image? The total area is about 100 sq.m. or 1,100 sq. feet. My router is shown by a cross and doorways are the rhombuses. Nominal speed is 500Mb/s, but I only get 48-50Mb/s in rooms 2 and 3.

I'm considering adding powerline units in rooms 2 and 3.

How to prepare for 2 gig frontier installation

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:58 AM PST

I have ordered 2.5 switch, along with 2.5 wan port rog Asus ax11000 gaming wifi router, and 6 cat6 cables off Amazon. How would I install in a way that is properly set up? Any other advices? I'm currently on 1 gig plan, and I've been using old Asus ROG ac gt 2900 gaming wifi router. It reaches up to 900+ download and upload wifi speeds without any issues. I haven't done switch yet, so obviously I need some sort of advice how to use/set it up properly. Can I do this way: ont to switch to moca adapter to wifi router? Using this configuration, and using ax11000 with 2.5g wan port, will I be able to hit little under 2 gig over wifi speeds? What will be actual expected wifi speeds using these configuration?

    Mesh WiFi for Downtown Tower

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:44 AM PST

I live in a tower with a lot of other towers nearby and it's basically WiFi congestion hell. My WiFi 5 Orbi was mostly reliable until the router bricked last week after years of use. I bought the Asus XT8 and it's been terrible so far - constant disconnections, all devices connect to the router instead of satellites (unless I bind them - annoying), daily required reboots of router & satellites, etc. My unit is only 1600 sqft but the congestion, steel, and concrete are challenging for mesh networks.

I thought a WiFi 6E backhaul would allow me to avoid all the congestion but the Asus ET8 seemed worse than the XT8 in some ways, so I went XT8.

I plan to return the XT8. Should I even bother trying the ET8 or will I just have the same reliability issues I saw with the XT8? They seem nearly identical in most specs.

I picked up a 2.5Gbps MoCA kit so I can do "wired" backhaul to a satellite that is furthest from the router.

I'm even considering the Orbi RBK963 because my past experience with Orbi has been good… even if it doesn't support WiFi 6E backhaul and is ridiculously overpriced. I work from home (software dev), have a lot of WiFi devices, have a 250TB Plex server, etc. I need something more capable and reliable than the XT8.

I wanted to go Ubiquiti but unfortunately need a viable solution ASAP so it's a no-go.

Should I try the ET8 to see if a WiFi 6E backhaul is helpful or just spend $1400 on the ridiculously overpriced Orbi and be done with it?

Passthrough 3 separate WANs -> TP-Link Omada 7206 Router -> UniFi Dream Router

    Posted: 03 Mar 2022 11:24 AM PST

I have three routers bringing internet to my mobile trailer: - Starlink (satellite disconnected atm) - T-Mobile 5G (works via Ethernet only) - Peplink Pepwave Max BR1 cellular (can connect to 2 access points)

Originally I was going to have it all go through my Pepwave router and use the speed fusion bonding to unify the connections, but I am 1 WAN port short.

Has anyone successfully pushed through 3 separate WAN connections into a TP-LINK Omada Router (7206) then into a final third router?

Side note: If I connect my T-Mobile via Ethernet and Starlink via Wi-Fi, I technically don't need the Omada 7206, but I'd love to have 3 hardwired WAN connections.
