    Strange Wifi Problem

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 11:55 PM PST

So my isp provides me with 8 mbps speed. Speedtest on ookla shows 8 mbps but on fast.com its 50 mbps, I get 50 mbps speed while downloading from google play and google drive and pretty much all google sites.

But while downloading on any browser (chrome too),download manager, torrent I get the stupid 8 mbps speed.

Is there any way to get that sweet 50 mbps on my downloads?

    Ethernet Cable Test Question

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 07:54 PM PST

Im crimping the router end of my houses ethernet cables (house builders didn't do it for some reason) and as of now the master bedroom is working but my room is not. The pinout is the same on the outlet jack on both the master bedroom and my room. The pin out is also the same on the router end of the cable. I tested the master bedroom cable and it flashes 1-8 but my room only flashes 7-8. Is replacing the cable the only way to fix my issue?

Edit: For my brothers room, ethernet works with 7-8 flashes on the tester but not mine.

2nd Edit: Ethernet for my brothers room stopped working, flashes at 1-3-6-7-8. Im going crazy at this point 😭

    Questions about Internet over MoCA

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 06:16 PM PST

    Questions about Internet over MoCA

I have an house from late 90s and decided to go the MoCA route to put internet in every room, so I bought this devices https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08ML1TSXC?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

I tried setting it up, putting one device where my xfinity cable modem is (connected both MoCA device and Modem to Coax by using the splitter that was provided), and connecting the ethernet side of the MoCA device to an Asus router that's connected to the Modem.

Then, I put another MoCA device in my office, connecting one side to Coax and another to my laptop via Ethernet, and it didn't work.

Today I went outside to open my Coax box, and I saw that only one cable is actually connected (see photo). I believe that the orange cable is the internet, and the white cable that's connected to it via a splitter goes to my home access point in the living room.

    https://preview.redd.it/y6aogvaj5hl81.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbdb40f37d0d677107db1cede60731a79d97c746

    My questions are

    1. It looks like I'll have to somehow connect all of the cables to each other to be able to use MoCA throughout my house, right? Will connecting more access points around the house could affect the internet signal?
    2. Which splitter can I buy to connect all cables to each other? will something like this do https://www.amazon.com/EXTREME-BALANCED-PERFORMANCE-HORIZONTAL-SPLITTER/dp/B00TNZ4J9Q/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=coaxial+cable+splitter&qid=1646446233&sr=8-8 ? are there many kinds of splitters with varying signal strengths?
    3. Given that my internet connection comes from Coax, how will it affect the MoCA signal? or otherwise, how will connecting multiple devices to MoCA affect the internet signal?
    4. If I'm able to get the pair of MoCA devices I bought to work, will I be able to extend the signal to more rooms by just buying more devices? Do I need an even number or it doesn't matter? (sorry if that's a stupid question)

    Thank you

    Upgrading internet tomorrow

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 08:02 PM PST

At present I have 200 Mbps internet with comcast and am upgrading to 1.2Gpbs tomorrow. My install plan is as follows:

    1. Swap modem and set up on app
    2. Make sure everything still works
    3. Upgrade to new plan from web portal
    4. Wait???
    5. Hopefully it switches over correctly.

My cable line is relatively new (about 5 years). Am I missing anything here?

Fanless 16 port managed switch that does VLAN trunking ?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 06:57 PM PST

I'm looking for a fanless 16 port managed switch that does VLAN trunking. LAG would be nice too. Trunking = 2 or more VLAN IDs on the same port.

The only small managed switch that I've found do to trunking is the Netgear GS308T. But it is only 8 ports.

What other small switches support trunking ?

    Thanks

High loaded latency with otherwise decent speeds (for me) with new T-Mobile Home Internet and MIMO antenna. MTU size change had great positive affect on latency with detrimental affect on speed.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 09:04 PM PST

So I recently purchased the T-mobile home internet and was pleasantly surprised with the download speeds of around 100 Mb/s (I live out in the middle of nowhere and was getting 15-35 Mb/s with my Att setup including external antennas and amp). My upload speeds were less than 1 Mb/s so I purchased a MIMO antenna and that got my upload speeds to 10-15 Mb/s (downloads didn't change much) which is perfectly fine for me. My unloaded latency is 40-60ms but my loaded latency is usually 1.2-1.7s, still way too high for any gaming. Ethernet connection vs WiFi showed no change.

I started playing with mtu packet size through command prompt and was able to get the loaded latency to 150-300ms with values between 1400-1418 down from 1500, but my download speeds went down to 3-20 Mb/s and uploads went down to 4-7 Mb/s. I don't want to manually change mtu size just to game and then change it again for every day usage so I'm at a loss of what to do.

Also, when changing the mtu size back to the default 1500 I had to release/renew ip, disable/enable my wifi device, and restart my computer before I was able to get back to the good download speeds I had beforehand and I definitely don't want to have to do that every time. I'm not sure if that was a fluke of internet congestion, my ignorance, or what...

I've ordered a router that plays nice with T-mobile and it allows you to change mtu size which I'm hoping will solve the issues, but I was hoping you guys could steer me in the right direction or divulge some insights. Thanks in advance!

How to use a friends internet speed remotely?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2022 12:11 AM PST

My friends have gigabit Ethernet at their house. I have permission to use it because they only browse the internet. I have like 25Mbs. How can I use their speeds to download things? I have thought about a seed box with an rpi, but I don't know how make one or to set it up. I'm not even sure how I would search these terms. I believe I can use some sort of webUI to send emails back and forth for notifications about downloads but I also don't want to put their network at risk. I will be using it for private trackers mostly.

Need help setting up iptables on a Raspberry PI gateway

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 11:05 PM PST

I am trying to run a home server that I want to be accessible from the Internet. I have two ISPs and a Ubiquity Edge router that can load balance between them. I want my server to be accessible through both ISPs and do DNS load balancing. The problem is that one of the two connections is T-Mobile Home 5G which uses CGNAT. So my plan became the following:

    • Get a Raspberry PI and connect it between my Ubiquity router and the T-Mobile Gateway. It has the following interfaces:
      • eth0 is connected to the Ubiquity router with my home network behind it
      • eth1 is connected to the T-Mobile Gateway and the Internet behind it
      • wlan0 is connected to a Wi-Fi access point on the Ubiquity network so that I can ssh into my Pi wirelessly
    • Route all standard Internet activity from eth0 to eth1. I did this by:
      • iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE
      • brctl addbr br0
      • brctl addif br0 eth1
      • in /etc/dhcpcd.conf: denyinterfaces eth0, denyinterfaces eth1
      • in /etc/network/interfaces: auto br0, iface br0 inet manual, bridge_ports eth1 eth0
    • So far so good, I can connect to the Internet now.
    • Set up a cloud WireGuard server and connect my Pi to it, the interface is wg0.
    • At this point, I can run an HTTP server on my Pi and I can access it using the cloud server IP address, after forwarding requests on the server with:
      • iptables -t nat -a PREROUTING -p tcp -d public_iface_address --dport 8080 -j DNAT --to-destination pi_vpn_client_address
      • iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING ! -s 127.0.0.1 -j MASQUERADE
    • So finally I need to forward traffic from wg0 to eth0 so that it can reach my home server. I thought I could do it similarly to how I did it on the VPN server, but the issue is that eth0 does not have an IP address assigned, so --to-destination does not work. How can I accomplish this?

Does more MIMO mean less range for a Wi-Fi router?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 10:37 PM PST

I know that the maximum allowed EIRP for a home router is 30 dbm or 1W. From my research, this seems to include all antennas/spatial streams.

So does this mean that if you have a router with 8x8 MU-MIMO to take an extreme example, it's going to be limited in range, because each of the antennas can only broadcast at 1/8th the amount of power compared to a 1x1 AP or 1/4th compared to a 2x2 AP, etc.

    ASUS AX86U wired speed issue

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 04:08 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

Hoping someone can help me out on here, I've been having issues with my ASUS router AX86U wireless is fine and great but wired is not so great, really bad in fact.

So basically I'm hard wired to my Xbox and I've purchased some over kill cat8 Ethernet cables to connect my fiber connection to the router and then from the router to the Xbox and I'm basically only getting 90/100 mbps sometimes it'll jump up to 160/170 mbps but not stay there. I pay for 200mbps. I've reset and set up the router from scratch many times but no fix and it's running the latest update from ASUS not merlin.

So when I run a speed test on my phone from the ookla app I get 160/170 all the time no problem even when I'm not next to the router. When I run the test on the asus app which is powered by ookla also it's capped at 130 it'll spike to 170 and then drop and stay around 120/130 like it's being bottlenecked by something.

To make sure it's the router I went to my mums and borrowed one of here deco m5s to test and the deco m5 out performed the ASUS router under the same test condition same cables and same devices add to the network. So when I run a speed test on the deco app it always gets 190/195mbps compared to the capped 130. When I run the ookla Speedtest on the app it gets 165/180 compared to the 160/170. Most importantly when connected with the wire to the Xbox it's far more stable and gives me a consistent 150/180 mostly 170.

Are there any settings I need to change that's causing a bottleneck or should I just sell and get another router. I'm abit disappointed as I saw so many good reviews about this router and the Wi-Fi speeds are great it's just the lan which I'm having an issue with

    Any help will be appreciated

    Help with switch/ethernet

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 03:55 PM PST

So, I just upgraded to ATT's 2 gigabit plan, and my switch/splitter and ethernet cables do not go up to that much, so I'm topping out at about 900 megabits download and upload, I will be upgrading to 5 gigabit soon too, so I want to find a splitter/switch and cables that will go up to that much. I have a wired connection from the modem going through my walls into my living room where a switch is that splits between me and my brothers room. So, I need help finding a switch/splitter that can support two computers at once up to 5 gigabits preferably, and some cables that can support that speed too. If you guys could recommend me some switches and ethernets on Amazon I would appreciate it a lot, thanks.

Closing on House in a Month - Need some feedback on planned network setup and NVR

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 04:57 PM PST

I'm closing on a house in about a month and would like to get some feedback on my planned network setup. The home is about 3300 sq ft split between 3 levels (basement, main, 1st). The main level is the largest of the three, followed by the basement, and then the 1st floor. I plan on installing 1 ceiling-mounted PoE AP for each floor. All wiring between infrastructure (i.e. APs, switches, cameras, etc) will be CAT6.

    Network Proposed Equipment

    • TP-Link OC200
    • TP-Link TL-SG3210XHP-M2, Jetstream 8 Port Multi-Gigabit L2+ Managed PoE Switch
    • TP-Link TL-SG2218, 16 Port Gigabit Smart Managed Switch, 2 SFP Slots
    • TP-Link EAP225 V3

    A few notes:

    1. Opting for two switches because the SG3210XHP-M2 supports 2.5GB connections and I think that will be useful for future network expansion.
    2. The TL-SG2218 might be overkill since I won't be using many of the ports. I'm estimating that I'll need to use ~8-10 ports for the entire network depending on how many drops I have in the house.

    NVR Proposed Equipment

    • Amcrest NV4108E-HS
    • Seagate SkyHawk 6TB HDD
    • Armcrest 5MP IP5M-T1179EW-28MM

    A few notes:

    1. Opted for the 5MP camera since the quality appears to be very good and the lower resolution should allow for more footage stored on the single 6TB drive.
    2. I really don't have any idea what NVR solution might be adequate, but I think the above should suit our requirements.

    Existing Equipment

    • Protectli FW6D (OPNsense router)
    • Synology DS420+ with Plex server

A few questions on the proposed setup:

    1. Should I get a TP-Link EAP245 or 265HD for the main floor? This will likely be the floor with the most wireless traffic and it is the largest (as I mentioned previously). I'm opting for the cheaper EAP225 for the other floors because I plan on upgrading once WiFi-6E becomes widespread. Or should I just opt for 245 for all floors? The 245s are only $20 more expensive per AP.
    2. Is the NVR setup a good choice? Ideally looking for something that is reliable, relatively easy to setup and manage, good quality video, solid motion detection, and has a good app for Android that can be viewed remotely
    3. Should I give consideration to using a Synology Surveillance station instead? I would probably move my existing setup to a higher spec'd Synology since I can probably use the expansion for my Plex server and then just run the Surveillance station on the existing 420+.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Can you get a wired connection from a mesh router to a device? When the router isn’t wired to the main router/ONT?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 08:39 PM PST

I just ordered a 3 pack of the deco x55. One for each level of my home. Only the one in the basement will be wired and that's from the ONT to the x55. The other 2 will be wireless (I know I can wire them together, I just don't have a good way to do it yet).

So my question is can I have the top level x55 connect to something like my ps5 using Ethernet? Is it possible? And if so will the speeds even be any different? I feel like it's not possible/if it is probably not worth it. But idk for sure how it works. Figured I'd ask here.

    Cisco or Tplink rack mounted?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 07:54 PM PST

Hello, im your average normal user and I need around 8 ports gigabit, I was getting a server rack for my stuff and I thought of upgrading to a rack mounted switch.

I found 2 switches, a cisco catalyst 3750 24 ports gigabit and a tplink 8 ports gigabit for 10$ more than the cisco.

Which one should I go for? the cisco seems suspiciously low in price, help me decide if I should risk for that cisco or go safe with a tplink

Also note, I never bought a rack mounted switch. Considering the amount of ports and the 50$ price tag, its suspicious for me, I don't know if that's legit or not.

A tricky one. Going to need a wizard to figure this out if possible.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 03:56 PM PST

Recently at work we got updated internet and a new provider (Cable). It came with a arries cm8200 modem. I connected a spliter to it, one ethernet cable going to the company's firewall souter and the other to my laptop, thinking cool no problem. Wrong... no internet access.. will only give access to company computers. It's driving me nuts that I can't find a way around this. Anyone got ideas?

    Device cap on Nighthawk AX4300

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 06:07 PM PST

I'm thinking of upgrading my Google mesh router to a Nighthawk Ax4300. It seems to be an upgrade in most regards, but my only hesitation is that I have 60 devices in my household and potentially more in the future.

Google claims up to 200 devices while the Asus spec sheet says 25. I have seen conflicting information from Asus saying they support more, but not sure if that blanket applies to all of their routers.

    https://kb.netgear.com/24043/How-many-WiFi-client-devices-can-my-NETGEAR-router-support

reccomendations to a complete newbie to NAS - PLEX server question

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 10:28 AM PST

I am brand new to the world of NAS.

I have two reasons for wanting one:

    1. I have a new baby and my wife and I take a billion pictures/videos. So we want someplace to store them.
    2. We use Plex media server alot. all our content is usually 4K, and if possible, the audio lossless (high quality TrueHD or DTS).

I think this matters: We will only use plex at home, on our home network. not remotely.

    What NAS does anyone reccomend?

My google research keeps pushing me into a Synology DS220+. Is this overkill for my needs? I don't want to spend a lot of money.

    Thanks all!

Need help with man cave networking.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2022 05:52 PM PST

Building a man cave in the basement and I'm struggling to visualize how I will get wired internet down there without trying run wires through the vents.

Our router and modem are on the 2nd floor of the house and the coax point is in the basement. I have access to more spots on the coax box thing so can I run a cable off of that into another modem? I've also seen talk about moca. Could I just connect that to the coax box and run off of that? I'm putting ethernet port outlets in the walls near where my computer and ps5 will be so id like to keep whatever i end up using on the backside of the wall i have access to and then run ethernet into those ports on the wall.

The alternative is moving everything to the basement but then I'm worried the wifi will be weak on the 2nd floor. Sorry if I didn't explain everything super well. Any help is appreciated. If you need pics or anything let me know. Thanks!
