Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:15 PM PST My admin settings are wpa2+wpa3, and I set it to hidden. I obviously set a password. Because I recently changed the settings I had to log back in on my computer and it didn't require a password. I'm concerned also because a while ago I had a friend over and his phone, computer (which wasn't open or used) were all added to my network. I'm not sure whats going on and it's stressing me out, I thought making it hidden would help. Edit: okay, I may have jumped the gun. It said I had wifi but when I went to use it I had no connection (until I actually put in my password) I'm still worried about why my friend could get into my network, I know he didn't even try to get into it. I only found out because I'm with telus and it gives me an app that shows me what's on my network [link] [comments]
Nftables and large IP lists for blocking. Posted: 06 Mar 2022 12:30 PM PST I recently spun up a new VPS and made a restrictive rule set. I then made a script that gets the IPs of all attempted ssh connections with wrong usernames, as well as the IPs of all incoming connections trying other ports then the ones I have opened. The script then adds this to a file that I include in my nftables configuration. All the IPs are then blocked at the ingress hook. Over the last 3 days this list have hit +8k IPs, and it doesn't seem to stop expanding. So, I have become a bit concerned about two things, that I hope the users of this sub can answer.
Also, should I even do this? All is IPv4 btw. If anyone is interested in the script and relevant nft config, I will post them here. [link] [comments]
Can I get 500 MBPS speed without having a gigabit powerline adapter? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 10:25 AM PST I've got 500MBPS vodafone wifi, a 600MBPS powerline adapter from TPLink and 2 cat5e cables from my modem to computer. however, I'm limited to either 100MBPS on windows which is not what I'm paying for or 1000MBPS which can't be supported since I don't have the powerline adapter speeds for it. Can I limit to 500MBPS on windows instead of 1.0 so I can get my full speed? [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Mar 2022 12:20 PM PST I have a few servers, some running multiple services (with different port#'s). I have port forwarding on my router directing random port numbers to the internal IP and the actual port for the service I'm running. (yes, I know, not the most secure solution--I don't keep this active all the time, only for when I'm testing or messing around). At the bottom of this is a breakdown of what I'm running. Note: I consider myself reasonably intelligent with this stuff, but I can't seem to wrap my head around this. If this isn't the best sub to ask, please let me know, and I'll reach out somewhere else. What solution do y'all recommend so I can get to all servers & ports from my domain (I have a legit .com and a duckdns domain forwarding to my IP, both of which dynamically update if my IP changes--which isn't frequent). Ideally, I like the idea of using sub domains (pihole.mydomain.com, motioneye.mydomain.com, etc.), but not sure if/how that could be done based on what I have. I'm certainly not married to that idea, though. Just any simple suggestion to be able to access each of those five services, externally, via HTTPS. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Newbie to home ownership and networking. Will this set up work? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:51 PM PST Hello there! I am new to home networking but have some knowledge. I want to set up a network that is fairly inexpensive at the moment but with the ability to upgrade in the future. I am moving into my first house and will be running Ethernet to a few spots in the house and want to ensure that the set up will work and be efficient but have upgradability in the future. Basic set up is that I will have fiber from AT&T coming in. The spot it comes in is terrible to use the router/modem combo. So I will put the combo there but disable the Wi-Fi. Then run Ethernet to my office. Have a 16 port POE unmanaged switch there. Then run cable to a few spots through the house. Then I would have one WAP upstairs and one WAP downstairs. So my questions. 1) can netgear WAPs work on an unmanaged switch? It seems like they can but I want to be sure. 2) will 2 Wi-Fi 6 WAPs cause any interference is a 2 story approx 2500 sq ft house? 3) Am j in missing or overcomplicating anything? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:42 PM PST My ISP does not allowed me to change the DNS on their modem/ Router. I connected to their router an Apple Time Capsule and set it up on bridge mode and created a new wifi network that works all around my home and I changed the DNS on the time capsule to the cloud fare DNS. My question is, is my ISP still able to see my browsing ? If yes how can I take control? Thanks [link] [comments]
Double NAT issue for Nintendo Switch Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:35 PM PST I did everything I could that I can understand from DMZ and Portforwardsing, asked for help with people on discord but I still can't get rid of my NAT D. Then a few weeks ago, someone said that my problem maybe due to having 2 router?? modem-router that makes me have a double NAT. Is there anyway I can fix this? Should I just call my ISP and say to put it into bridge mode? I'm not really techsavy so I'm not really sure what to do. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:35 PM PST So we all basically know that soho routers/switches are basically at cost, so if you need anything like that you should just get it since it's so cheap. Is there anything else you guys can think of that you could include in that list, incase I'm just being cheap about something that might be really useful in a home setup that I don't have? Obviously that would involve me just listing out everything I own but I'm thinking the list of stuff could be useful for anyone thinking about which things they should just go for and buy instead of holding back. Personally I can only come up with router/switch/ETH cable, but also I want to include stuff outside of networking as well as long it's tangent-ly related like computer speakers. I just got a 2.1 speaker setup for my computer after being cheap for like over a year not wanting to buy one and I really should've just bit the bullet a long time ago. [link] [comments]

Coaxial Outlet Price? and Who to Find For. Posted: 06 Mar 2022 03:06 PM PST I've been debating for awhile to actually use ethernet throughout the family house with a network setup, but to make this simple. I'm going to get a coaxial outlet in my wall and just move the modem. Just curious on the price range and who I would call to do this. [link] [comments]
Why not move my BGW210 gateway to outside my house? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:14 AM PST ATT recently installed my fiber Internet connection. Because the ONT must be placed outside my house (see Outside Panel), they gave me a BGW210, which is installed in my laundry room structured media enclosure (see Inside Enclosure). This takes up a lot of room in the media enclosure. I'm planning for: ONT to BGW210 to 16-port POE switch to (2 unifi APs + multiple POE cameras + multiple bedroom LAN ports) Any reason that I can't just turn off the WiFi on the BGW210 and stick it outside (with the ONT) to free up space inside? Our alarm system works off of our WiFi, but a burglar could just as easily unplug the ONT. If outside is feasible, should I request a BGW320 or doesn't matter? I'm only using a 300mbit plan. Trying to sort out double NAT with Eero router and ATT Fiber IP Passthrough Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:51 PM PST I have AT&T Fiber and a BGW320-505 residential gateway. I am trying to get this thing to do as little as possible and let my Eero router handle everything. I don't want the RG to be able to see anything on my network. I've tried putting the RG into IP passthorugh mode, but I think I'm still getting a double NAT, since a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 shows two 192.x.x.x hops: first to the Eero, and then to the RG. These are the steps I've taken, and I would greatly appreciate any help!
I'm pretty lost here and I'm not sure how to proceed. [link] [comments]
Netgear Nighthawk R6700v3 range extender. Posted: 06 Mar 2022 11:04 AM PST I have a net gear nighthawk R6700v3. I was wondering if it would be possible to use it as a repeater or extender. Where I live currently there is a router everyone connects to. I'd like to use my router to have my own WiFi connection where I also can adjust settings to my liking. I don't have a laptop but I can install custom firmware if needed. [link] [comments]
Wired internet not working, WiFi fine, Ethernet switch...? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:34 PM PST This setup worked for months and recently stopped working, but in ways where all my troubleshooting has come up empty. I'm set up modem > router > Ethernet switch > devices. Some devices go router > devices w/o switch and are fine. My wired devices off the switch can't draw internet. If I bypass the switch, they're fine. I replaced the switch, thinking it was a hardware failure, but the new switch didn't solve the problem. Any thoughts for next steps? I've tried different cables, using different ports, power cycling, etc. with no results. The most confounding part is this setup never changed. [link] [comments]
Reliable use of 2 VPNs at once? Posted: 06 Mar 2022 02:14 PM PST I'm about a year in to a tech service job working on databases, websites, etc. My company has a couple of sites I occasionally have to go to which can only be accessed using their own VPN, however I need my own VPN too as I need to make sure it looks like I'm in my home country at all times... My fix for this has been to set up a VM and connect to the VPN through there as the virtual network card uses the IP address of the physical one however I only seem to be able to access any of the sites around 10% of the time, I constantly need to restart my laptop/the VM to get it to work. Is there something I could do to fix this? Are there any better options? I'm using windows 10 Home on the VM via virtualbox btw. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Mar 2022 10:05 AM PST I have an Asus ROG AXE-11000. The router is very good. For entire coverage in my 420sqm home, I have 4 XT8 mesh points. This works very well for me. However, I'm currently in design and drawing phase for new house construction and I would like to continue to use the AiMesh setup. However, with concrete walls, I need a mesh point for both the roof Terrance on the 4th floor and one on the ground floor where the pool and car park. In my search, I haven't seen any AiMesh compatible outdoor weatherproof nodes. I'd stay on the same network with auto switching so Sonos won't have any problems outdoors. Does anyone have any ideas that can help me with the outdoor component of this network? [link] [comments]
Home network wiring and Amature radio concerns. Shielded vs unshielded reading request. Posted: 06 Mar 2022 07:42 AM PST Hey folks, I know this question has been asked a ton of times, but I believe this may be a little different in the respect of Amature Radio ( Ham Radio), then again, maybe not. I know its a longshot, but wondering if anyone had a before & after reading of RFI when using shielded vs unshielded? I'm about to run cat 6 in my house, Network will include the usual pc & laptops, IoT devices, along with wireless APs, POE switches, and cameras. My plan was to run unshielded cat6: Logic: 1) Cheaper and easier to work with. 2) I don't believe the shielded would help reduce the RFI in the house since I will have wireless AP's. 3) There are other ham's and GMRS operators within a mile or 2 radius that are running bigger stations / much higher PEP (I'm only running 50 to 100watts max). For VHF & UHF there really isn't a concern since most of my operations are FM & Digital (C4FM). My concern is HF, and honestly, the noise floor in a suburban neighborhood is moderate to high depending on the band and time of day. One thought was to run fiber instead but would get costly really quick. Not sure if the juice is worth the squeeze for either, running fiber or unshielded. Any thoughts or insight is appreciated. Thanks. [link] [comments]
Remote Plex Server & X60 Deco Port Forwading (help) Posted: 06 Mar 2022 09:47 AM PST
So I recently upgraded my wireless router to the X60 Deco (3 mesh) and looking to use the port forwarding feature but I can only specific one device such as AppleTV to use the port but I have 4 more devices that uses Plex. I'm a bit confused on how to proceed on to choose all the media devices On my PC when I stream a 4K file on Plex - I always got buffering here and there but when I implemented the port forwarding the buffering stop and played right away. Port Fowarding Settings on Deco
Will it be possible to have all 6 devices to use both port? [link] [comments]
Reducing Latency over wifi using bridge or mesh nodes Posted: 06 Mar 2022 12:47 PM PST Apologies if this has been asked, but I can't find an exact answer to this question. I have Google webpass coming into my apartment near the front door and I want to get the fastest speed/least latency possible in the office about 30 ft away. Measured speeds at the eero router I have currently (using direct Ethernet connection) is 350 down / 250 up with 9ms latency I'm wondering if plugging my gaming PC into a mesh node via Ethernet or using a wifi bridge would be faster than just using the wifi adapter on my PC. Also any suggestions for products that would also allow me to prioritize the PC over other wifi connections to reduce latency would also be great. Appreciate the help! Thank you in advance [link] [comments]
2 routers stopped playing nice Posted: 06 Mar 2022 12:39 PM PST Hi All, here is my set up which was working great for over a year and now is being wonky. I have a nighthawk router (router A) connected to the internet in one building (building A). All devices in building A are connected to the A WiFi network. In another building (building B), I have a second nighthawk router (B) with a separate wifi network. This network has B building devices which need to talk to each other full time, and guest users that need to access the internet part time. I have a cable connecting one B router LAN port to one A router LAN port, in order to provide internet access to B. At some point the B router was powered off and on a few times, and now devices on both networks are sometimes (but not always) assigned addresses in the 10.0.x.x range and cannot access the internet. At other times, devices are assigned addresses in 192.168.1.x and can access the internet. Why is this happening now and not previously and can it be fixed? I am a total network dumb dumb (obviously), but could this behavior be caused by both routers acting as DHCP servers? The benefit of this current configuration from my perspective was that guest users cannot access the A network, and I can air gap the internet to the B network at any time without interrupting the B Wifi network inter-device communication. This seems better to me than a guest Wifi network across both buildings but maybe it isn't? Open to any thoughts / guidance on this. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
