Windows 10 installation media is not reproducible Posted: 24 Mar 2022 11:43 PM PDT I am using Windows Media Creation Tool to make an USB installation media, and every time I make it, the checksum of two files change: install.esd and boot.wim. It makes it really hard to check the integrity of boot media, and honestly, there is absolutely no reason why the checksum of the files should change in the first place. Can anyone shed some light as to why this happens? P.S. Yes, I know I can download the ISO and use Rufus, which will give me a 100% reproducible installation media, but I do not understand why the official tool creates a media that is not reproducible. Posted: 24 Mar 2022 08:09 PM PDT I have a laptop (Lenovo Legion 5) with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H and RTX 2060 graphics. I use them mainly for programming and music production(Cubase). Based on your experiences, I just wonder is it worth upgrading to Win11 on my laptop right now or should I just continue using Win10 for now? Also, I don't have any reason to upgrade to Win11 other than the excitement to try it out lol. Win10 run just fine for my workflow on this laptop. [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Mar 2022 02:16 PM PDT Hey Do you know any way to change the date format and language/keyboard selected icon, so they aren't cut and hide under screen? Windows 11 using the registry thing to change the taskbar size. [link] [comments]
Posted: 24 Mar 2022 02:12 PM PDT For a few years I've been digging through the Linux rabbit hole and I would say I know the system just about inside and out: Daily driver on Gentoo, custom kernel, self-developed Portage overlay, terminal warrior workflow, everything short of literally contributing to every single program I use. I do however still need to interact with Windows for work environments and I've come to notice that apart from a few things (like the magic SysRq or some Event scheduler candy) both systems are likely capable of fairly similar stuff administration-wise, they just work differently. My problem is finding the right buttons to push. What are some good resources for advanced Linux users to get an equally advanced, deep handle on Windows for administration, configuration, development and other power user purposes? On Linux I'm used to the manpage system and Arch Wiki, but the MSDN often doesn't cut it for similar concerns. [link] [comments]

Posted: 24 Mar 2022 09:14 AM PDT Possible daft question, about to get my first Windows PC for a long time. (Quite excited haha, Windows 11 looks pretty clean!) For silly reasons that are irrelevant, I'd like to have a space in the PC name to allow it to match a theme with my other devices, but it seems like Win11 still doesn't allow spaces or even hyphens/underscores. Is there a reason for this? Android/macOS/iOS seem to get on fine with networking when device names have spaces in them :O Is it just dogma or is there a practical reason it still isn't supported? Is it legacy support (eg. not naming a file 'CON' to keep compatibility)? [link] [comments]
Do Windows Explorer replacements handle the File>Open dialogue from applications? Posted: 24 Mar 2022 12:54 PM PDT This thread has a pretty good summary of Explorer alternatives: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/6wseq1/is_anyone_using_an_explorer_replacement_fulltime/ Is the File>Open>(File Explorer) behavior a standard feature that is handled by some of these alternative apps, or is that a core function that can't be altered? How do I force close every Window Posted: 24 Mar 2022 08:12 AM PDT The only way to trigger this seems to be by shutting down the Pc and hitting Cancel when the Window pops up warning you that some Programs are still running Any way to trigger this without hitting shut down? [link] [comments]

Edgebar must be a joke, right? Posted: 24 Mar 2022 03:21 PM PDT Let's try reposting this here, because a bot removed it on the windows 11 subreddit. ------ Saw edgebar as an option in my taskbar today. Funny, I didn't buy windows 11 for $100 with this, guess Microsoft decided I want this for me, thanks for that. Opened it, and imediatly disgusting. Bing is default search, bing is pinned to the top, can remove other things, but can't remove bing. Can't remove news either. Okay, so i figure I'll give it a chance, I go to switch my profile to my personal account, it crashes, and takes down every edge browser I have open with it. That was a joke right? April fools! Uninstall please? [link] [comments]
Second hand PC, clean out and reinstall Windows Posted: 24 Mar 2022 06:56 AM PDT Discussion about buying a used PC - I bought a used PC, with windows already on (legit license), but want to clean up the hard drives and make sure there is nothing suspicious or anything dodgy on them. Do I create an installation USB, format the hard drive and then reinstall using the installation media? Will this ensure anything that was done to the PC in its current state is gone, and everything is now fresh? I have also read that flashing the BIOS is recommended - what does anyone else do in this case? [link] [comments]

Is it possible to get the Windows lock screen image ("Windows Spotlight") to change more often? Posted: 24 Mar 2022 08:22 AM PDT I like seeing different photos on the Windows lock screen, but for me it changes very infrequently - only once every week or two. Is there a way to have it happen every day instead? [link] [comments] |
