    Samsung S22 Ultra first impressions

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 10:07 PM PST

Hopefully I can keep this short, but I came from a OnePlus 9 that broke because of my stupidity and love that thing to death and decided to give Samsung a try (a third time) and see how it'd fare out. I got to say, i'm very impressed, but not without a few nitpicks.

    The likes:
    - Screen (with a caveat) is absolutely stunning and that peak brightness allows me to enjoy content I wouldn't be able to otherwise on other displays

    - The general design of the phone. It's sleek and looks great in matte black and without that camera bump which I personally didn't like. The rounded edges also allows one handed holds to feel comfortable in the hand.

    - The battery life. I was skeptical at first because I came from a phone I could panic charge and would last a long time after the fact. However, the sheer battery life on one charge alone is enough to make me rethink fast charging as a whole. The 45w fast charging is definitely enough for me

    - The camera. Damn, i'm a photographer by hobby and this thing really stands out even against my own camera. The zoom capabilities far outmatch any other phone in the market right now and makes it convenient for travels where I don't want to be burdened by my camera and tripod.

    - The s-pen. I got the S22 Ultra because of the camera, but now I fell in love with the pen. Not only is the experience super smooth, you can do a lot of things with it that I wouldn't be able to do with any other phone. Like take photos remotely with the s-pen, which is something I personally adore.

    - OneUI. I came from OnePlus and Apple and those were really barebones and nice experiences. OneUI seems to be almost as good as those two if not better in some aspects and I can respect that.

    The personal nitpicks:

    - The display leans over to the warm side even if the the white balance slider is all the way towards the cool side. I personally never liked yellowish tints and idk if it's my display but it makes skin tones in various pictures look very "yellow". It's a stunning display, but I wish I did have more control over the colors a bit like I did with OnePlus. Even a saturation slider or a broader white balance range would be a huge step up personally.

    - "bloat". Love how they managed to make the bloat not intrusive, but many apps just shouldn't be there at all like the wearables app. Once again, JUST a nitpick. This hasn't hindered my experience with the phone.

    - Curved screens. I just don't like curved screens, that's it. However, compared to the OnePlus 8 I had before with a curved screen I like the way Samsung did it compared to how they did it.

I went a bit more in depth about this in a video I made but I shouldn't self promote so i'll leave it as is.

As for what i'd like to see in the future it's really just the display configureability. the OnePlus 9 had an "AMOLED wide gamut" mode which I thought was pure eye candy. While many people do not like oversaturated colors there are people who really like that added amount of flexibility as to what you can do with the colors of your display. Otherwise, aside from skin tones looking really yellow on my screen compared to other phones i've used, this is an exceptional phone.

Galaxy S22 pre-order perk redeeming expires few days after phone is expected to be shipped

    Posted: 26 Feb 2022 01:01 AM PST

Tl;Dr Just want you guys to know that some offers included in your pre-order may expire before or right when your S22 product arrives, so be sure to redeem any pre-order offer products as soon as possible!

I live in Denmark, and here we are promised a pair of Samsung Buds Pro with our S22 pre-order. But the promise comes with an expiration date set to the 31st of March, and my Samsung Galaxy S22 has just been delayed to the 22nd of March. This is the third delay announcement I've gotten, and I fear another will be coming. I just spoke with customer service, and they do not know if the offer will be extended yet - which means that I have a very small window for ordering my Buds Pros... If another delay is announced, the free Galaxy Bud Pro offer may expire before my phone arrives, and I need the phone to unlock the buds.

So, just a heads up: if any offer like the Samsung Buds Pro is promised with your pre-order, be sure to check when the offer expires!

Link to the offer with expiration date (in Danish)

Motion blur still exists on S22

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:02 AM PST

    Dx0mark review clearly highlights this.

This will give horrible results for kids/pets indoor.

Fyi, issue not happening on iphones and pixels.

Let's wait S23 to see if this is fixed...

Samsung Brand S22 Series Screen Protector Release Date?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:48 PM PST

Does anyone know when the S22/S22+ Samsung screen protectors will be released? It comes up as available on their website, but is unable to be added to the cart. Best Buy also offers it, but they're backordered.

Note 9 user switched to S22 Ultra after 3 years. Advantages and disadvantages between the two phones.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 12:14 AM PST

These are some of the things I've noticed within my first few days of owning the phone. I know a few of these are features that were updated in previous S/Note phones, but they're still upgrades to Note 9 users like myself so I'll include them. Feel free to let me know if I'm missing anything

    Pros:

    WiFi 6

    5G

    120 hz display(adaptive)

4 Cameras (Ultrawide is nice to have. Was something I felt I was missing when the Note 10 came out. And all the other photography improvements)

    Screen (brightness/color/size)

    5000mah battery

    45W fast charging

    Reverse power share

    S pen latency

Facial recognition is much faster/more reliable

    Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

    Adreno 730

    12 GB RAM

    No bixby button

    Lost features:

Rear fingerprint on Note 9 was great! It was really fast, and I could have my phone already unlocked before it was even fully out of my pocket. Swiping down on it could pull down notification drawer. The Ultrasonic under display works well, but I kinda feel like Samsung did it to flex on Apple that they could do it first. All phones have empty real estate on the back and I thought it was a really smart use of it on the Note 9. Just my 2¢

Edge lighting (custom colors per app, the key word thing doesn't work the same)

    No Notification LED

No expandable storage: (this isn't a huge deal for me because I opted for the 512GB vs my 128 GB Note 9 so I got plenty of space now, but it's still a lost feature)

I can't customize vibrations within Textra anymore

No headphone jack. Didn't really use it that often, but always liked that I could flex on iPhone people with it. (Pour one out for the homie)

Didn't there use to be a heart rate monitor?

P.S. Obviously very happy overall so far and the "lost features" aren't that big a deal to me. I'd say the biggest one is the notification LED, which I knew it would be. (aodNotify is working very sporadically for me, but maybe just need to tweak the settings)

Anker nano II 45W charger is NOT compatible with S22 Ultra

    Posted: 26 Feb 2022 02:56 AM PST

I've read on reddit and forums that users have bought this adapter hoping it was the same as the original Samsung 45w (not the older 45w for older note lineup)

Bought it to test, and could find any improvement over my existing 25w charger, so I plugged the anker nano to a watt meter and found out it was only maxing at 25w. Tested with depleted battery to 100% and a few times from 20 to 80 percents : same

Don't be scammed like I was, and buy the official charger instead...

    Grip Attachment for Case?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 12:04 PM PST

I've been using my S22U with an Otterbox defender. Love the case. Want to keep it. Just curious if anyone has experience adding a grip attachment ( pop socket, straps, elastic and finger holes ), some of which can double as a kickstand. Anyone have a favorite? Would love some opinions!

Cases vs Galaxy Z Flip 3

    Posted: 26 Feb 2022 01:19 AM PST

Z Flip 3 owners, Do your cases stay secure on your phone or is it like mine and slip off? I just wanna know if maybe I bought the wrong case/type of case or if this is actually a issue, if it's an issue I've got a idea to fix it, DIY style 😜✨

It's frustrating having the cases start slipping off with every little movement and in my option it's so the only downfall of the phone I've had.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 12:44 PM PST

I've had my 22 Ultra for a few days and I assumed the new wallet app they announced would be released with the phone or on launch day. Still nothing on the Galaxy Store. Anybody know when it's supposed to launch?

Paying less now for an unlocked S22 Ultra 512 and earlier shipping than during pre order time.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 09:05 AM PST

I had purchased the Tmobile S22 Ultra 512 gb green phone during the last days of the pre-order promotion. With my trade in of an S21, I was paying over $800 and it said get it by April 8th. Now with the new promotion an unlocked S22 Ultra 512 gb green comes out cheaper and it has an earlier delivery date. So I cancelled my pre-order one. I don't really need the extras, I would rather pay less and have an unlocked phone.

New promotions are up on the Samsung US website (some good, some bad)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:13 AM PST

So with the pre-ordering period being over Samsung has updated their deals and in some cases the S22 deals might be better for some people than the pre-order deals, especially if you don't need the extra storage or bonus accessories.

For example before they offered $700 trade-in for the S21U towards the S22U and now it's $850. You no longer get the bonus storage upgrade or $250 eCredit but you do get a $100 Google Play credit.

On the other hand Tab S8 trade in prices have plummeted with $200 the max trade in value for a Tab S7/S7+. I would guess this is more to due with the insane backorder going on with them but still surprised to see the values drop so much so soon.

    Samsung A52 Question

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:28 PM PST

Hello! I'm planning on getting the A52 4G variant 128gb/8GB. I don't know much about phones as I usually only use them to play random games, watch YouTube/Netflix, scroll social media, listen to music, read manga.

I'm also in a bit of a budget, so I'd like to know what your overall impressions are with the phone and also it would really help if these questions were answered!

    1. How's its gaming performance?
    2. Can you transfer apps to the SD Card? Since I'm planning on getting the 128 internal storage variant and just getting an SD Card.

S22 Ultra case: clear, durable, vertical kickstand. Does it exist?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 10:04 PM PST

(I posted this in the S22 Ultra sub, but between the sub's requirements of at least two levels of "flair" and then getting very little in the way of advice, thought I'd give this one a shot too.)

Tl; dr - ISO thin-ish clear-backed case that will keep the phone safe from impacts/scratches - including the camera lenses - with a built-in screen protector since I don't use fingerprint. Waterproof and vertical kickstand ideal, but not necessary. Add-on kickstand recommendations welcome

On a quest to get a case before my phone arrives on Monday, and I have a few picked out, but I welcome insight on some of these brands (or even whether there's just no option that covers this whole list). I like the built-in protector on the front of my current Merit a lot because I don't use fingerprint, and have had bad luck with separate screen protectors due to the phone-deadly combination of young pets and tile floors. Spidercase, Meritcase, and a couple others all seem pretty identical, so I may just go with one of those, but it'd be great if there's something that fits this whole bill.

    Necessary:

    - Built-in screen protector. That's my #1, along with the next one.

    - Can handle a drop that could be either face-first, corner, etc. (Young pets and tile floors again. They're like toddlers, they will find a way to break it while you're in the bathroom.)

    - Protection for camera lenses. No way I'm leaving those out in the open to get scratched. Would rather buy a new case than replace a lens.

Stuff I really want, in order of most to least important:

    - Clear. Solid edges are fine, I'm just a cheap bastard who's upgrading for the first time in almost eight years from a Note 4, so I want to show it off a little. My cheap-bastardness does not extend to the cost of the case, so I'm not gonna balk at a case that's like $40-50 or a little more.

    - Horizontal/vertical kickstand. That's the only thing missing from the ones I've seen, and I love the one on my current case. I work remotely, so meetings happen on my phone as often as they do on my computer. Recommendations for good aftermarket stands I could stick to the case or something are welcome too.

    - Waterproof, but it sounds like that really isn't a huge deal with an ip68 rating. I do live in Houston, where this phone is guaranteed to get caught in at least a few torrential rains at the least, so I'm taking that into consideration.

    - Not enormous. I already am guilty of the Costanza Wallet, so not having a Costanza Phone would be helpful with a phone that is already gonna be gigantic. I don't spend a lot of time hiking in mountains or around heavy machinery, so I don't need a military-grade case, just one that is durable enough to keep this large investment safe (yep, I'm a cheap bastard).

    Any recommendations appreciated.

HDR Content better on S21 Ultra than the S22 Ultra

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 01:23 PM PST

Does anyone else notice that HDR content looks better on the S21 Ultra than the S22 Ultra? I've compared them side by side using the Jacob + Katie Schwartz Youtube channel and the difference is very noticeable, even after aligning the brightness settings and turning off adaptive brightness.

    Maybe a software issue?

    Preorder fail

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 02:10 PM PST

The order was supposed to arrive on the 22nd. Even though I pre-ordered on the 10th, I have yet to receive any updates. Customer service tells me that they're overwhelmed, the live chat tells me something else and I honestly don't know what to do. Does anyone else have the same issue? (Canada) I would have been better off pre-ordering it from Costco or Bestbuy instead of the website.

Preorder: order (an item of merchandise) before it is available, with the understanding that it will be shipped later.
