    Help Wanted

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 06:54 PM PST

I've been out of building PC's or diving into specs for too long, so I could use some help

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Up to ~$1,200USD, less is preferred

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, as long as its worth it

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Performance & build quality
    2. Form factor
    3. Battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not overly so. I currently have a Surface Pro 4 (the keyboard annoys the hell out of me since it consistently breaks connection and goes to tablet mode), and my work laptop is a Surface Laptop 4 which is fantastic.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

12.5-13.5". The surface Laptop is about the right size IMO

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use Sketchup frequently for planning out my woodworking projects. Otherwise my laptop is running fairly intense Excel sheets (current workbook that's open right now has 30,000+ formulas, and 50,000 cells of data) and Chrome. Almost nothing else.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I really don't need much, but would like 8gb of RAM or higher and high resolution (do a lot of video watching, especially when I travel) that can also support a 27" ultrawide monitor at 60Hz. Touchscreen would be nice as well. Don't need a lot of storage either as most of my stuff is stored or backed up online.

Best laptop windows laptop for under $1200USD

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 06:44 PM PST

I've been reading up on it and was just wondering which brands are best (Dell, hp, Lenovo etc) for a laptop in the 800-1200 price range. I assume most will be able to perform the tasks I'll be doing, and was mainly wondering if there's anything I should be well aware of and steer far clear of.

Acer Nitro 5 vs HP Pavilion Gaming 15

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 02:01 AM PST

    Acer Nitro 5

    HP Pavilion Gaming 15

Looking for a laptop for my brother who's going to be taking up engineering. Ideally, we want the laptop to last his whole time in college and into his working years. As much as I dislike gaming laptops, I don't think we have much of a choice for raw performance and upgradeability outside of this laptop type. The two models I listed above are the cheapest ones locally available with RTX graphics. Prices are exactly the same.

Specs for the two pretty much the same across the board. Only differences are:

    1. The Nitro has an i5-11400H while the HP has a Ryzen 5 5600H. From what I've gathered, these two prcoessors are pretty much neck-and-neck, but the Ryzen has better battery life.
    2. The Nitro has a slightly larger battery (57 Wh vs 53 Wh).
    3. The HP is slightly thinner and lighter than the easier.

That's pretty much it. I have no idea how the cooling systems of both fair in their respective SKUs, as well other differences that don't show up on specs.

Which do you think is the better buy?

Dont care about screen resolution, battery life, etc. Main thing I care about is pushing frames externally. I can slum it at 1080p for a few days now and then.

Currently have an Eluktronics Max-15 2070Super. Doesnt have enough ports to do 3 externals, and I'm not a huge fan of the company's support, but will go that route if it makes the most sense. Going to give this one to my wife so she can game more often.

$1500 Gaming / Music Production Laptop 17” preferred

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 11:47 PM PST

Used another forum for this format, but also want suggestions here.

    ◽️ Budget: Around $1500

    ◽️ Country: USA

◽️ Screen size: Must be 17" or 17.3"

◽️ Screen resolution: Flexible on this. I just want it to look nice.

◽️ Does battery life matter?: Nah

◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for: Gaming , Music Production

◽️ Weight: Flexible, I'd much prefer something lighter, but it doesn't have to be that light.

    ◽️ Any other important details?:

I'm looking for a laptop that can play some fairly easy to run games (Blizzard games like WoW, Overwatch, Dialbo 2 resurrected, etc). Games that are more graphically intense I do not mind playing on Medium settings.

Will also be using for Music Production so something stable with a lot of ports would be nice, and the larger the internal SSD the better. The most important factor to me is I NEED a 17" screen. Maybe I'd go for 16" if someone can convince me there's good trade offs or to get my budget more around $1500

Also, it would be REALLY nice if it had a numpad. I much prefer having a numpad to those internal laptop speakers on the side. The Acer Nitro seems like it's a fit, but unfortunately that screen is awful and DIM. I want a better screen than that.

    Razer or Macbook Pro

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 07:55 PM PST

I currently have a late 2019 Razer Blase Stealth 13" with the following specs Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.30GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with Max-Q Design. I am looking for some advice on a new laptop to buy a new laptop and was wondering which would suit my needs best. I like to play World of warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV and all three meet the minimum requirements for the game. I travel a lot for work so being able play on the road is a requirement, other uses are YouTube, internet browsing, and some Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. When I am at home my current computer is normally attached to a 34inch ultrawide monitor. The three computers I am looking at are:

    1) Alienware m15 R6 with I7-11800H (24MB cache, 8 cores, 16 threads, up to 4.60 Ghz Turbo), NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3070, 8 GB GDDR6 with 16GB, DDRA, 3200MHz of memory, 15.6" QHD (2560 x 1440) 240Hz 2ms with ComfortView Plus, NVIDIA G-SYNC and Advanced Optimus

Looking for smallish laptop up to ~$500, Intel gen 8+ or AMD equivalent (US)

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 06:34 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Up to ~$500. $600 hard limit.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

More than open, used or refurbished might even be preferable.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Performance & build quality
    2. Form factor
    3. Battery life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not terribly. I'd prefer it to not be an actual brick, but that's about it.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

12.5" (or whatever larger size fits in that footprint with thinner bezels).

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do light to moderate amounts of photo editing as well as music recording/editing/etc., sometimes really pushing my current CPU.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A solid keyboard is a "very good to have", but I have tempered expectations.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've already looked around at listings for T480s and X280s, I'm curious about similar laptops that I haven't thought to look for or don't know much about (i.e. Dell's lineup, HP's lineup, etc.) which might be better value.

Razer Blade Advanced 2020 vs 2018

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:43 AM PST

Looking for a stable pc for Uni. I was wondering if it would be worth it to go for the 2020 model instead of the 2018 model. The price difference is big (2018 is half the price of the 2020 model). I'm not looking to play AAA games on it (I already have a desktop). I'm just looking to play smaller games (Minecraft, Trackmania, and the kind).

Would also appreciate other suggestions, but I'm pretty keen on having a Razer pc :)

    Which is better?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:28 PM PST

Would you rather have a 15in gaming laptop with a 3070, 16GB ram, 512gb SSD and 144hz screen, OR a 15in gaming laptop with a 2080 Max-Q, 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD, and 300hz screen? lower refresh rate with the newer graphics card and smaller storage, or older graphics card, more storage and a faster refresh rate?

edit: I saw the Form recommended by the modbot, but I don't really think it applies to my situation since I've narrowed it down to two different configurations and just sort of want an outside perspective.

Is legion 5 with Ryzen5 4600h and 16gb of ram good enough for heavy multitasking

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 08:45 AM PST

Hi everyone , I wanted to know your opinions about legion5 laptop.

Currently I'm using a desktop with 16gb ram and Ryzen 5 1600 but it often gives me errors Example of my work volume : I need to have 10 to 15 tabs of chrome open while editing a vector file in Adobe illustrator then exporting the layers to Photoshop and later to after effects plus some messaging app like telegram for sending the works to my clients

My current PC usually crashes specialty while working with Adobe after effects and I have to close an reopen some apps which slows me down

My second question is are laptops in general fine and suitable for several hours of intense work and multitasking because that's what I'm going to do with one.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for studying/casual gaming notebook and want some of your recommendations

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 01:19 PM PST

I'm brazilian and computers here cost about 10x more than in the US (accounting for the minimum wage, taxes, etc), so buying an rtx 3050 here can buy you a 3090 in the US. Well, my brother lives in Australia and will bring me a notebook since they are a lot cheaper there, and I've been wrapping my head around several times in the past few days in which one to choose. I want to play games like CSGO, rainbow six, gta 5 and lost ark while having a good screen, not so loud fans and a great battery life (also enough performance . My choice so far has been the HP envy 14 with an i51135G7, 16gb of ram, 512 gb of ssd and 32gb of Intel optane and most importantly an gtx 1650ti, that will helo a lot on the gaming part. I don't want the i7 version since it doesn't add to the performance when you factor in the extra cooling it needs. It costs about 2000 aussie dollars, about 1450 USD. My budget is something around 1500 USD, but it would be nice if I found something cheaper. What are your recommendations?!

    [600-900 €] [Netherlands] Suggestion for CAD/FEA/Programming laptop

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 01:02 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      600-900 Euros, Netherlands/Germany
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life > performance/build quality > form factor. See end of post for reasons.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 - 17 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
CAD: Yes, (CATIA v5 or 3D experience, NASTRAN, Abacus). Gaming: no. Video/photo editing: no
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I like watching gameplays more than playing games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I travel a lot with my laptop and am clumsy. So, a robust, good quality built is almost as important as performance. Good quality keyboard and precision touchpad (I have had to use CATIA without a mouse sometimes). Touch-screen, finger print reader are not necessary. An optical drive will be good to have but not strictly necessary.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am a structural engineer. I am looking to replace my 7 year old Toshiba which crashed this Friday. I will be using my new laptop mostly for entertainment but also for learning, i.e. practising 3-D modelling, finite element analysis and Python programming related to 3-D parametric modelling and generating reports from analysis of data from large databases. I am away from my desk often. So, a good battery life is very important.

Re-edit: Post was not showing up on the subreddit. I must have done something wrong. So I deleted the old post and resubmitted it. I hope the automod doesn't reject it this time.
