Are there any compatibility issues when saving Libreoffice documents in docx format?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 12:56 AM PST

I know Libreoffice Writer can handle the same formats as MS Word, but when I save in docx on Libreoffice, or odt in MS Office, I get a warning that says "This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in the currently selected file format". Does that affect the formatting in any significant manner, or can I just ignore the warning?

Nvidia 340.xx legacy driver issue with Kernel 5.8 and above..

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 09:56 AM PST

I've been trying to install Linux on Core2Duo, 6GB RAM and GeForce 315 for days. I meant for it to be a garage studio music box and internet browsing machine.

However, I have issue with this driver.. I'm unable to install any distro after the logo appears, screen just goes into "no signal" mode.

Is there any distro that I can download that has below 5.4 kernel and is it possible to limit kernel from updating further?

    Issues with Linux

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 10:35 AM PST

I've been trying to switch to Linux on my main machine for about 2 months now, I've tried multiple distros but I always seem to hit the same problems in each. I'm going to list my problems here in hopes that someone can help!

1). I use Avidemux to quickly edit videos in Windows, and it is sufficient for my purposes. Using the AppImage in Linux is easy as well, however a video that takes 10 minutes to process in Windows will take 35 minutes to process in Linux. Probably this is a problem with my Nvidia GPU settings, but I've adjusted and readjusted those settings multiple times and I have not found a way to at least match how 'fast' processing happens in Windows (it's a pretty ancient GPU, besides)

2). Fonts in general seem blurrier than on Windows. I've found gnome based desktops to be pretty much unusable as I cannot see words clearly, KDE is slightly better but still not completely what I'm used to with Windows. I've tried installing MS fonts, changing system fonts/sizes, and it's still blurry

3). I would like my browser (firefox) to open up in the same position and size when I open it. I'm not too fussed about other programs but I like my browser to open in the top right corner directly against the top and right edge, every time (as it happens in Windows). KDE again is slightly better than gnome at this, but even still, it bumps out the right edge like 50 or so pixels every time, which is a tiny frustration but that doesn't happen in Windows.

Is there anything that I can do about these problems? Besides the above, I've absolutely loved my time in Linux and it's already helped a little with my job too (web dev so getting around the linux servers has become easier the more I learn) I'm currently on Linux Mint, after trying Pop OS, Pop OS with KDE, and Kubuntu, and multiple distros through a virtual machine

Distrochooser recommended me to use Devuan, which I don't care or even know what systemd is enough to want to avoid it. I've tried Debian in a virtual machine briefly, and I thought it was fine (minus my issues with gnome above). I'm not too stressed about the actual distro anyway, probably something debian/ubuntu but really I'm trying to find the right desktop environment for me, or how to fix the issues above so that I can work with any of them. Thanks!

Ports aren't working, or I'm very dumb

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 10:57 AM PST

I'm currently trying to setup a pterodactyl panel hosted on an Oracle VM, and I'm having issues with ports. I've opened all of the ports I want to in Oracle's Network settings but only some of these ports are working properly. The ones not working that are needed are 25565 and 8080.

I'm also running on Ubuntu 20.04

(Linux mint) GPU driver doesn't open on start sometimes?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 07:59 AM PST

Every now and then my PC will start without nvidia drivers ( rtx 30 series). I have to restart it a few times so that my pc will randomly recognize it. How can I fix this issue?

Going to try to uninstall and reinstall drivers so maybe that'll catch a bug but want to know if there's a fix for this.

Use a Wine application as default app for file type

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 09:02 AM PST

Hello I use ApE (a plasmid editor). Its a simple portable exe app. There are .ape files that I want to open but I cannot get them to use ApE as the default app. I can launch ApE using wine "C:\Program Files\ApE.exe" and then open a .ape file from within ApE just fine. But I want to be able to double click a file.ape and have ApE launch automatically. I looked through the menu for picking a default app, but I cant find ApE. I see other default wine apps in there so I think its possible I just dont know how to add ApE to that list.

I even have a .desktop shortcut set up if that helps.

    [Desktop Entry] Name=ApE Exec=wine "C:\Program Files\ApE.exe" Icon=/home/eddie/.local/share/icons/ApE_icon_BG.gif Type=Application Categories=Wine;

    Please help.

    I messed up the GRUB.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:32 AM PST

I dual booted Una Cinnamon successfully then changed boot order to windows first using grub customizer because I have some users using windows and now I am left with this. It worked fine when I forced restart the first time. Is there something I can do to bring the original back?

    nvidia gpu + amd igpu

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 03:40 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am using EndeavourOS on a hp omen 15 laptop with an amd cpu/igpu and a nvidia gpu (rtx3060).
But i can't make them both work, it's either only my laptop monitor (amd) either only external monitor (nvidia). $ lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GA106M [GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile / Max-Q] (rev a1) 07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cezanne (rev c5) it shows the two $ lsmod | grep nvidia nvidia 39129088 11 and depending on my /etc/X11/xorg.conf it's either one or the other but I can't make the both works. Actually when there is no xorg.conf it's my amd igpu by default

    any idea ?

edit : It was working "before", I don't know what changed to make it not working anymore

How the heck do I get rid of this bell sound on tab autocomplete?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:47 AM PST

Hello, everyone. Pardon my language but what the heck.

Whenever I do tab auto complete in my terminal, the loudest noise possible plays in my ears. I've checked pulsemixer and it refers to itself as a 'bell' sound

I use the kitty terminal with zsh as my shell. I've tried sourcing a file called inputrc with the line "set bell-style none" but that hasn't changed anything.

I also tried creating a file in my home directory (.inputrc with the same contents), as well as editing the config for inputrc in /etc.

None of these appear to work. Any thoughts?

    Preload alternatives?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 02:21 AM PST

Hey all! I'm looking for something like preload where I can choose which apps I want preloaded. There are only a few apps that I open frequently so there is no need to have everything preloaded. Is there something like that out there? Or can I configure preload to only cache apps that I choose?

I can`t format or create partition table when trying to install system

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 03:32 AM PST

I have 2 hard drives. On drive 1 i have Windows, on drive 2 i want to install Ubuntu Mate. Both drives work perfectly under Windows. But when i`m trying to install Ubuntu installer tells me that partition creation fails. When i`m using Gparted, it tells me that i don`t even have a partition table. Tried searching for bad sectors, under Windows everything is ok and under Ubuntu...

I installed linux mint over ubuntu and now I can't boot into ubuntu

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:56 AM PST

So I have a desktop PC with a 3600x and B550 motherboard. I finally figured out if I download the edge verison of Mint it'll support my motherboard and it did.

I installed Windows first on my ADATA drive and then I later installed Ubuntu onto a separate SSD.

When I wanted to boot into Linux I would hit F12 for the boot loader and I would select ubuntu

I decided to try out Mint and since I had nothing on my ubuntu install I simply overwrote what was on the Ubuntu SSD in the Linux mint install. Linux Mint appeared to install succesfully.

But when I go back the boot menu by pressing F12 I don't see Linux mint as an option but Ubuntu. I click on Ubuntu and it doesn't load. I think the boot manager is expecting to find Ubuntu but it doesn't because I wrote over it with mint.

So I thought maybe I just boot directly to the SSD but when I do that I get MBR error.

So I booted back into windows and came here.

Why is the terminal command running a different version for software than the one installed with apt?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:51 AM PST

Hi everyone, Linux noob here. I'm trying to find out what I did wrong when installing then updating a program using apt (FreeCAD).

I installed the program FreeCAD from the apt repository (sudo apt update && sudo apt install freecad), then found it was an old version (0.18.4), so followed the instructions on their site to install a newer stable build:

    1. Add the PPA to your software sources:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freecad-maintainers/freecad-stable

    1. Retrieve the updated package lists: sudo apt update

    2. Then install FreeCAD along with its offline documentation: sudo apt install freecad freecad-doc

However, when I try to run FreeCAD with the command freecad, it's running the old 0.18 version. When I run apt-cache policy freecad, I can see that it shows I have the right version (0.19.2) installed. Could anyone explain why this could be happening? Could apt have installed 2 different versions of freecad and somehow the PATH variable is screwing up getting the right one?

    terminal flashes and disappears

    Posted: 24 Feb 2022 06:53 PM PST

I'm on xubuntu. I linked a script to a keyboard shortcut to hide the bottom desktop panel.

Would like to make it so when I use this shortcut, I don't see any terminal window pop up and disappear.

here is the command for the shortcut I'm using:

    xfce4-terminal -e /home/user/bin/hide_xubuntu_panel_2022.sh
