How does bash handle keyboard input while running a shell script in the foreground? Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:59 AM PST Let's suppose that you run a shell script in the foreground that does not take any input from the user, a simple example being downloading a file using wget: From my understanding, when a shell script is run in the foreground it will share stdout with its parent shell, so the user can see the result of the commands that are being run, but the actual processing happens in a separate child shell with its own pid. So, for scripts like my example above, even though keyboard input is echoed in the terminal, it shouldn't affect the processing in any way (excluding special button combinations like Ctrl+z, Ctrl+c etc) unless it expects user input from stdin. Is my understanding correct? If user were to input another command (e.g. ls -al) while the wget script was still running, would that new comment be scheduled by bash as a job or is there some other mechanism that bash uses to remember that it's supposed to run something else as soon as currently running script is done? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Can i just make two partitions? Doubts about dual booting. Posted: 05 Feb 2022 10:59 PM PST Hello, I want to do a dualboot on my computer, but the only way is installing windows first and then my distro would have a special installation for both, but can't i just split my disc in two partitions and install the OS as if those were just two separate disks? because i want linux and windows occupy half of of my ssd each one and i dont know if the default way would let me select the desired partition space. And if i can, what are the advantages of the "standard way"? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Feb 2022 04:12 PM PST switch to linux? hello hello, i have been trying linux on a virtualbox for a while, i would like to switch to linux on my new computer. mainly because I like that it's open source and that Microsoft isn't stalking me. Which distro do you recommend, and are there any performance drawbacks if you use an Intel Alder Lake CPU? In general, I see that a lot of programs (that I use) also work on many linux distros, but I saw that Adobe creative cloud programs (like photoshop) do not work. Is that correct or is there a way. I hope someone can answer my questions, thank you so much!! [link] [comments] |

For Some Reason No Linux Distro Works On My PC Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:27 AM PST So about week ago I got a new gaming pc. And just in case this can help with my issue I will be listing the specs: i9-10900KF, RTX 3070 TI, and MPG Z590 gaming carbon Wi-fi/z590 gaming force motherboard. After I unboxed and got it all setup and the first thing I did was download a Manjaro iso flashed it and booted to the live cd then went trough the setup and Installed It. This is where the issues start to happen so, this applies to every Linux distro I've tried and this is the /old/root error. After I finished Installing every distro on this list and rebooted back to the OS I always got this 'cant umount /old/root/ which from my research is some Nvidia error which Is strange because I've seen other Linux Nvidia users not have any kind of issue like this. Anyways, I'm having this next Issue on both Manjaro and Pop OS (they both have the same issues for me) so, besides this old/root error the other issue I'm having with Manjaro and Pop OS Is when I play games there Is no audio on any games I play (besides some faint fuzzy audio in hitman blood money) but, I didn't just play hitman blood money I played around 4 other games I think on Manjaro and Pop OS and those had zero audio whatsoever. I tried looking for solutions for a couple hours and nothing worked. The next distro I tried was Linux Mint and for Linux Mint It didn't detect Wi-Fi only Ethernet which, I couldn't get actual Ethernet so I used my phones "personal hotspot and connected it to my pc via the phones USB charger and after doing more research I tried to install the drivers via this Ethernet connection and after all way done nothing worked. And finally, I tried Ubuntu and I couldn't get past the "would you like to play around in the live USB or install it" My mouse wasn't dead, It just wouldn't let me click and I from what I remember I couldn't find anything on the Internet about this. I want to use Linux I don't know If It's a BIOS issue or I need to Install some drivers that Linux doesn't Install automaticity I've been switching between Windows and Linux and I'm currently on Windows and I don't know what to do and It's stressing me out. Please Help, -Numerous [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:23 AM PST My wi-fi keeps disconnecting randomly and appears to be unstable. I am using a USB wi-fi adapted as the built in wi-fi on my motherboard doesn't work at all under Linux. Does anyone know how to fix this issue or can someone recommend a wi-fi adapter that works better? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:03 AM PST After creating a bootable pendrive and installing the Ubuntu version on my notebook, it still asks for the bootable device everytime I try to turn on the notebook, then it starts a checking and the installation setup interface, then I close it and finally I get to the desktop. Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:39 AM PST I'm a longtime Linux user at work, where I don't get to do and have support for hardware. Making the jump to using it at home and I'm having trouble with my new PC build. I'm pretty inexperienced at the hardware/kernel level, so it's entirely fair to assume I may missed basic steps. I bought a new Motherboard which only had 4 SATA slots, and thought I could compensate with this pci->sata expansion card which supposedly works with Debian 11 according to linux-hardware Computer boots once. Once? Yes, once. If I leave the card in and boot a second time, it shows the bios screen noticeably too long, until it reboots (rinse/repeat). The very first time it comes all the way into Debian 11.3. If I restart the machine with the card removed it comes all the way up which is the only way I can boot a second time, I need to remove the card, get at least to GRUB screen, before I can replace the card and boot with the card installed again. I suspect that it's a driver problem, and the kernel claims to have a module (ahci) but it doesn't report a loaded driver. (had to go with the unstable build because my graphics card is not yet on the AMDGPU driver list). lspci -vvvk

Need help to understand a guide in Linux mint Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:31 AM PST The following paragraph is from a guide I am using to enable hardware accelerated video decoding. *If you are on Ubuntu 20.04 or non wayland sessions you can still enable this feature, however, you may need to complete a extra steps (in addition to the above instructions). To enable the feature on xorg append: export MOZ_X11_EGL=1 to /etc/environment To enable the feature on wayland append (not needed on 21.04): export MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 to /etc/environment * I don't know what they mean by export. How do I do this? [link] [comments] |
Question about User/Group permissions Posted: 06 Feb 2022 01:58 AM PST Tonight I was working on a project and my task was to grant Apache permissions to a couple of specific folders. In order to do so, I had to run a "chown" command and it in essence gave Apache permissions as if it was a human user? I'm still a newb, but a video I watched on Udemy said that the permissions are indicative of users, groups, and others. If I gave Apache user/group control, does that mean that applications can be given permissions to files/folders just like you'd do a human user on a network? I know in the image apache only appears for groups. But the video I watched the instructor had apache in both fields for user and group. The concept in general is just a bit confusing. Hope that makes sense. [link] [comments] |

Password prompt even after adding NOPASSWD: to visudo Posted: 06 Feb 2022 05:04 AM PST I'm using latest ZorinOS. What I did is file currently looks like this (x is the username): I go to Software app and whatever app I choose to install it gives a dialog "Authentication is required..." and x as a username below. How to disable this prompt? Ideally, I would like if it was possible to mimic the prompt on windows i.e. get the prompt, but don't have to type anything, just click OK button or something, but if it's not possible, then to disable the prompt all together. Posted: 05 Feb 2022 03:01 PM PST Hello, I'm a noob... I ditched windows and installed cinnamon on my pavilion d7 laptop. When I plug in my HDMI to watch a movie a second screen is created and the movie is on a second desk, which is not on the TV. If I try to put it full screen then only part of it is shown.... I have no other screens and don't intend to use other screens, so can I just deactivate multi screen option and have everything happening on one desk??? Is that possible? Thanks for your help :-)) Guy [link] [comments] |

Audio has random clicks when recording in Audacium Posted: 05 Feb 2022 11:50 PM PST I recently made the jump to linux and am trying to record a podcast using my usual set up but am noticing I am getting intermittent clicks in the audio. In doing some research I am finding that these might be Xruns. I am wondering what are the settings to put to avoid this in Audacium (audacity). I am using a Shure SM7B->Fethead->Audiobox 96 USB->pc PC is Ryzen 5700g w 32 GB of DDR4. I am using the default setting in Audacium. Audio Host: ALSA Recording/Playback are set to my interface.
