[DEV] I'm working on a Reddit Client that allows full control of how content is displayed. What do you think?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:59 AM PST

    Hello there,

I've been wondering if it is possible to create complex, interactive apps that satisfies everybody's tastes. So I made Flex for reddit, a client that aims to provide an extremely flexible and customizable interface for reddit.

When I first released Flex, it focused on customizations for text. But I wasn't satisfied, I wanted full layout customizations; think KWGT-levels of customization with a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor for customizing how content is displayed. Don't like the default list or card layout? Change it! Don't like seeing post flairs? Hide it! Think the title font is too small? Enlarge it! That's all possible with Flex.

In this update, users not only can control how the content is displayed, they can also control what and where content is displayed.

Here are some things you can do in Flex.

Flex's customization engine is complex. So I created a website to document its features. Check out website for more details. https://flex4reddit.github.io/flex-for-reddit/

If you have any comments or questions please let me know in the replies. If you're interested in receiving regular development news & updates, please head over to r/Flex4Reddit; that's where I'll be posting and discussing regularly.

    Get Flex for reddit

Currently, the app is only available in Closed Alpha. To enroll in the Closed Alpha, please join the "Flex for reddit Closed Alpha Google Group", otherwise you'll get an "app not found" error message when you try to download the app. I apologize for the hassle, but it is the only way to scale a closed alpha.

    1. Join the Flex for reddit Closed Alpha Google Group
    2. Join the Flex for reddit Testing Program
    3. Download Flex for reddit from Google Play

    Closing Words

Last of all, I'd like to thank you for just having a speck of interest and opening this post, and I appreciate every single one of you for going through the hassle of downloading & installing it.

    Hope you enjoy your weekend.

Anyone have some experiences on how Huawei and Aurora store handle paid apps?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 01:39 AM PST

I got a good deal on a Huawei device but I'm still considering as idk if Huawei with Aurora store installed can handle paid apps of Play Store at ease. Me in particular use some apps like Moon+ Reader or my launcher that keep checking on purchase license every few days. Idk if a phone without play services can handle it? Can anyone help me on this one, thank you in advance!

    Syncthing/Syncthing Fork: Devices not connected?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 09:28 AM PST

Hi, added 2 Android devices via device ID qr code.

Both are in same WLAN, Syncthing is running. In my WLAN devices are allowed to communicate (Fritzbox router). But the devices won't be found in Syncthing. They are always shown as "disconnected".

    Any idea?

camera app that geotags and shares photos publicly, separate from default app

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 09:15 AM PST

I have geotagging and automatic uploading of photos turned off on my phone, but for work I would like to be able to tap a separate camera app or widget to take photos that will be geotagged and uploaded to any photo sharing service that will make them public. Basically looking for a way to save me the trouble of going back and finding specific photos on my phone and sharing them individually without compromising the privacy I have for personal photos. Don't really care how complicated initial setup is, as long as I can tap different apps/widgets for personal/work photos and share accordingly (without using separate user profiles on android)

Plain-text note-taking for simple backup on PC / durable editing

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 04:45 AM PST

I'm looking for an app that creates plain text files in a specified folder. I'm tired of Evernote's impossible export conditions, Samsung's inaccessible note files or weird .memo format... There are so many apps (txtpad, not-in-the-store apps ...) so it would help me save time if you already have an experience with it.

    • Creates plain text files in the folder without having to manually export
    • "Friction-less" experience: shortcut to existing note / new note on home screen, keyboard opens up, note is saved when out of focus.
    • Launches instantly
    • Works offline (it goes without saying)
    • (Ad-free option)

    Thank you!

Moon+ Reader doesn't track time spent reading accurately

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 05:44 AM PST

Been using Moon Reader for years now, very happy, great ereader. Finally upgraded to the pro version a few months ago, works much faster without the ads, it's great, love it.

EXCEPT. I have a habit of checking the Book Information of the book i'm currently reading so that I can track how much time I've spent relaxing that day, and lately I've been noticing that I feel like I've read for quite a bit longer than it tells me I have. Sometimes it feels about right, other times I'm absolutely certain it's wrong (reading a 90k book in 4 hours? ha, no), but mostly I can't really tell.

It's really important to me that this information be accurate (maybe five-ten minute variation, if it absolutely cannot be avoided) as I'm using it for an incredibly effective CBT technique that involves earning and spending relaxation time and therefore I need to know how much time I've spent, y'know, relaxing. It would be one thing if I could know that it consistently leaves out one third of the time I've actually spent reading (which sometimes feels about the right ratio) and I could adjust the math accordingly, though it would be a pain. But I'm *not* sure it's consistent, and I'm *absolutely* sure that something iffy is going on, and it makes me not trust the app at all, and I can't really tell whether this started around the time I switchd to pro or later (or earlier), and basically I don't know what to do.

Is there some setting that could be responsible for this? Some glitch in my device? I'm on a Lenovo tablet with Android 6.0.1. (bought in 2018). I haven't yet checked whether this is an issue on my phone as well. It doesn't seem like androids that old have a screentime tracker built in, so I was considering getting another app to track how much I use Moon+ Reader, but then a bunch of reviews on most of them said they also didn't track super reliably, and like I said, I need as small a margin of error as possible. Worse comes to worst, I know my average reading speed is roughly 4k in 20min (which is somehow both faster and slower than the app tells me? like, you'd think if I read 90k in 4 hours I'd have a crazy reading speed, but no, it tells me it's 79 words per minute or something like that), but that doesn't really account for books that are absolute page-turners or ones that are slogs or if I ever like a scene so much I go back and reread it. I much prefer tracking the time actually spent reading, but I sometimes open books for just a few minutes and other times spend 5 hours in one sitting (and sometimes get distracted in the middle of reading and turn them off for a while before picking back up) and it's not really feasible to manually keep track of all that.

Basically, any advice? This has been driving me *crazy* the last few days and all I want is to not have to think about it at all.

VR (3D) to 2D Video Player

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 11:41 AM PST

I'm looking for an Android video player that can take a 3D VR image and convert it to a 2D image. More specifically, I mean the ability to browse the 3D VR image in the form of a 360 2D video, without requiring the need for a VR headset. This app comes close but cannot support any 4k videos: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snack.vr

If anyone knows of a better app please let me know, the current selection of apps in this category either don't support video streaming or are just fake apps that bombard the user with ads.

Hiding 'Active' status for a single person on Messenger

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 01:49 AM PST

Is there a way to hide active status on Messenger for just one person through the mobile app?

I noticed there's a way to do this on the desktop version, however I'm not sure if fixing the settings on the desktop will do the same for when I'm using the mobile app?

    Blocking WhatsApp calls

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 10:06 PM PST

I want to completely block WhatsApp calls without blocking people. WA has some problems because of which even if I set a blank (no sound) ringtone, it'll automatically change it to a common notification alert tone my android (POCO F1) uses. So, any app that lets you configure who to block like a (blacklist/whitelist), when to block, etc.?
