WORK and PLAY [US] [$800-$1000 USD] MUST SHIP TO JAPAN

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 09:30 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Up to $1000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Looking for a 360 display.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not an issue.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Planning on doing illustration down the line, and some photo editing here and there. This is all new to me so I'm not sure what is out there.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Games are secondary (see below)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Thunderbolt 3 or 4 will be a must.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm looking for a computer that can double as a gaming PC for when I'm at home and a work laptop when I'm on the go. I plan on using an eGPU at home (eventually). Challenge is, I'm having trouble locating a laptop with a 360 degree display that's also advertised with having Thunderbolt 3 or 4. Other than Thunderbolt and a 360 display, I'm pretty open. I'd prefer an i7, but compared to what I'm using right now (7th gen i5), it will be a major improvement. One other catch, while I'm purchasing this in the US, it will be shipped to Japan, and not all sellers ship to Japan. I'll try to handle this, but I want to mention it just so it's out there.

Starting Uni this year, need a laptop, nothing too extensive.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:03 PM PST

Basically, I'm starting Uni, and all I really need is something that will be decent for office work type stuff, not die straight away, and last me a decent while, if possible. The course is a bachelor of social work, so its not anything tech related.

**Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**
Australia, Probably around 1500 AUD is my utter max, but I'd rather something under that, if possible.

**Are you open to refurbs/used?**Not really.

**How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**
Just something that'd be good for basic uni work, lectures, office stuff, that sort of thing. A long battery life is good and it lasting a long while too.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**
I'd rather it be light, as I'm gonna be carrying it around a lot, but its not the most important thing in the world to me.

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**
    N/A
**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**
No, nothing like that. Just basic office stuff really.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**
    N/A

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**
As long as it works and lasts, I'll be happy. a nice keyboard and everything else is just a bonus. But I'd rather NOT have a touch screen, if possible.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Firstly, I'd rather they'd be able to be picked up from a store, than delivered, but that depends how long it'll take to be delivered, lol. I start Uni late this month. So something like Officeworks or JB-HI-FI I'd prefer, if possible. Not a must, though. And I have found a few I'm considering, but I worry they're a bit bad because they're so cheap, and the reviews are either very positive, or saying they had an issue that couldn't be fixed lol. They're these:

    • Asus E410 14" Full HD Laptop (128GB) [Intel Celeron]
    • Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 1 Notebook 14" Celeron/4/64 GB
    • Acer 14" Swift 1 Notebook Celeron 4/64GB Gold

    Thank you.

Looking for work laptop [US][1000-1500 USD]

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:41 AM PST

    Budget:

    $1000-1500 USD, open to refurbs

    Form Factor:

I don't want something thin and light! I'll gladly accept a heavier/chonkier laptop rather than sacrificing thermals and battery.

    Build Quality:

Don't need something rugged but the laptop will be used almost exclusively on the go (meetings, travelling, etc). Noise is also not a huge concern but I don't want something that sounds like a helicopter trying to take off under moderate loads.

    Screen Size:

I prefer around 14", 15.6" is a bit too big for me and I almost never use numpads. I don't need 4k, 1080p is more than adequate.

    Performance:

Mainly will be using it for programming and maybe some VMs. Ideally, I'm looking for something that can run Linux without too much finaggling with drivers. A must-have is RAM up to 32 GB minimum.

The tool I use the most is Xilinx Vivado, which uses a single thread for most tasks but I do want at the very least 4 physical cores. I don't plan on doing any gaming on it.

    Specific Requirements:

A good keyboard is a must; SD card reader would also be nice to have. I don't really use touchpads in general, I prefer to just bring a mouse with me. Also don't need a touchscreen but if it's an option I'd be okay with it.

    Finishing Thoughts:

I've been looking at the Thinkpad T15 with the Ryzen 5 5650U since it has better single threaded performance than the option with the Ryzen 7 5850U. The Intel models are attractive but a bit pricy and I've heard the thermals are not great. I haven't had a Thinkpad before but the Trackpoint looks really cool since I hate taking my hands off the keyboard and reaching for a mouse.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Need new laptop for my dad-- lost his in a power surge

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1000USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Not preferred, but if it's a significant plus I'd consider it
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality, performance, battery life, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very important, but lighter is nice
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15"+
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Minor use of photoshop, nothing too intense
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No gaming except some ripping games of Freecell
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
No touch screen needed or wanted! SSD / nvme and DVD drive preferred
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This is for my dad, he was a power user 15 years ago and hasn't moved on since then. So it doesn't have to be anything too exotic or powerful, but he does like to view photos and uses it for some basic photoshop stuff (cropping, color adjustment, etc.)

    Thanks!

    Preschool teacher/graduate student/light gaming

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 05:07 PM PST

I am a preschool teacher and a graduate student looking for a very portable laptop that I can also do some light gaming on

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
-$1000 but would love to stay well below that
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -sure
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
-My top priority is that it be lightweight and super portable. I also need it to be durable, have a long battery life (10+ hours), and I NEED it to have at least 1 USB port. I really like the idea of a 2-in-1 but don't know if that could handle the games I want to play.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-Very important. I need something lightweight and relatively compact.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      -14 to 15 inch screen
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-This machine will mostly be for word processing (writing research papers and lesson plans) but I also will be using it to play video games (Sims4 and Skyrim), browse the web, and watch youtube.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - Sims4 and Skyrim, medium settings 60FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-I need a good keyboard since I'll be using it for lots of typing. I'd like to have a touch with a good stylus for drawing and note taking.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion
    • I am currently using a Lenovo Yoga laptop from 2015 and I've liked it but it's too bulky and in rough shape. I really like the look of the Microsoft Surface Pros but doubt that they can support The Sims4 without overheating (let me know if I'm wrong) and I'm unsure about how durable they are.

School laptop that can open up websites without taking 3 years to load.?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:12 PM PST

As cheap as possible preferably. But not so cheap that its the same as my Chromebook. Never going to game on it, i have a PC at home.

I want it to open websites at the same speed as my 1200$ PC, but ofc it doesn't need to run games the same. If i notice a difference in website loading speed, ill end up just doing all my work at my actual PC instead of the laptop

no macs, i prefer windows 10

Seeking recommendation for a durable gaming laptop

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:58 AM PST

Looking for a long lasting (4-6 years) gaming laptop.

Budget- Max 1350 USD. Region- India Requirements- Rtx 3060 minimum. Core i7 10th gen minimum. Any core(i5/i7) of 11th or 12th. 512gb or more SSD. No hdd required, but if available then it's cool.

    Any proper Ryzen-Radeon alternative appreciated.

Hello. I'm looking for a laptop to game on, and I require 6gb vRAM minimum. My budget is not yet fixed, but it will surely be around 1350 USD.

I'm unable to get a Legion 5 around this price in my region due to ridiculous amounts of import duties.

I'm planning on using this laptop for 4+ years, so I need it to be able to last that long. Any good suggestions?

Basic but upgradeable laptop wanted for about £300 in the UK

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:41 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Up to £350 in the UK. Can go slightly higher if needed
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and ability to upgrade memory, maybe CPU. 15 inch HD screen preferred
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      It's not
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14 inch or higher, 15+ preferred
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will be switching to Linux, probably Ubuntu. Light photo editing and light gaming would be nice
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mostly retro games, maybe some older RPGs
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
HD screen and the ability to upgrade memory if it's got less than 16GB. The ability to upgrade the CPU in the future would be nice.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I currently have a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850, with an i5 3230, 8GB RAM, and an SSD. It does most of what I want, but the screen size and resolution are not the best. It's also getting to the age where it's a little sluggish.

I've found a Dell Latitude E7470 on Amazon Renewed for £360, and it seems to be ideal. It's an i5-6300U with 16GB RAM and a 240GB SSD. The main worry is the screen resolution. It's listed as 1280 x 720 in the description, but the seller states that it's 1920 x 1080 in the questions.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-Latitude-E7470-Laptop-Black/dp/B07V9NB2ZS/

There are also some decent laptops on ITZoo, but with a 1366 x 768 screen, and they're starting from £150. They've got the i5-7200U, but only 4GB RAM. The £200 difference is more than enough to upgrade the RAM, and there are some i7 chips and boards on Ebay if I wanted to upgrade the CPU, but I'd be stuck with the smaller screen.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or maybe a better option?

    Thanks for your help :)

Looking to buy a new laptop with good gaming capability

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:37 PM PST

    Hi Everyone,

I had purchased a laptop in 2016 based on a suggestion of one one of the community members

    https://www.reddit.com/r/SuggestALaptop/comments/4zig4t/1200_or_less_new_york_no_screen_size_preference/

    The above link is the post and I ended up purchasing the following;

Dell Inspiron i7559-2512BLK 15.6 Inch FHD Laptop (6th Generation Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 8 GB SSD) NVIDIA Gaming GeForce GTX 960M

I was very pleased with the laptop but I feel like its time for an upgrade. I would like something similar to the laptop I currently have, but with newer specs that are more in line with the current requirements for gaming etc.

    I have filled out an updated form below;

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    • US - Preferably $1200 or less
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Would prefer a new laptop but if its a one day used laptop or refurbed because the box was just opened, idc.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would like a laptop with a solid battery life but not at the expense of too much performance. Maybe better battery life at the expense of not playing a new game on ultra, but not to where its significantly impacting what the laptop can do.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I dont want a brick of a laptop. I do want it to be portable, but I'm not expecting a macbook air.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Current screen size is fine for me, I beleive its a 15.6'
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No video editing but I would like to game here and there. I would like the laptop to be able to handle most games, but it does not by any means have to be on the highest level (ultra graphics etc). I can play the witcher 3 on my laptop and it pays fine on normal. I do most of my gaming on console and not terribly often on PC, but I would like to be able to game. I just dont want to be shut out from playing a big title because my laptop cant even run it on normal. If i can swing it id like the laptop to be able to perform on higher level graphics etc. Im just not going to pay $2000 for that. The amount I game on my laptop is minimal in the scheme of things.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Settings arent terribly important, as long as I can play them and I dont have to dumb the graphics down to something that not even enjoable. Basically I want the laptop to be able to run on normal or high on most big titles.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Dont care about touch screen, would like a nice keyboard and touchpad. i want a reliable build so it doesnt get beat up so easy.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Basically want a solid laptop that will serve day to day needs and also allow me to game confidently when I want to. Does not need to be marketed as a gaming laptop. I believe my current laptop was not marketed as a gaming laptop. It was a solid laptop which would allow me to game as well. I would like to stick to the same type of thing.

    Laptop Suggestions for Thermals

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 11:46 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Around $2000-2500

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm open to it, obviously prefer new ones

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factor unimportant, build quality moderate, performance and thermals are the most important, battery life is not an issue, I'll carry a charger

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very. Im gonna use it for school so i have to carry. less than 5 pounds if possible

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 or 15, to save weight

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

blender(rendering as well), genshin impact, final fantasy xv, streamlabs, autodesk inventor,

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    FFXV - 1440p or 4k High 60fps

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Im more worried about thermals than anything

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I only have a 4k external monitor, so I would like 4k/1440p gaming cause the 1080p mode is really bad. And dont AMD cpus run cooler because of power usage? Ive heard that, so im heavily considering something 5th gen Ryzen 9. And a RTX 3070 seems best for the amount of gaming and 3d Modeling/Rendering im gonna do. Ive got this mapped well, Id just like some input on what laptops are portable and have good thermals. the new 2022 Razer Blade 14 looks good

      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and battery life. I really need something that can handle tabs and word documents open at the same time without slowing down a ton.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Would prefer it to be on the lighter and thinner side
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Not tiny but no preference

Maybe some photo editing such as lightroom and photoshop
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not a priority at all, would be a bonus if it could handle indie games

      No
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I just want something with good performance for writing and reading online documents and switching between different programs. I use Word and Chrome/Edge a lot and my current laptop can not handle it well. I also usually have Spotify running and my laptop right now can be slow to load it. I have been looking at the Acer Aspire 5 on Amazon that is currently $426 but I need advice please. Thank you.

Battery Life Oriented (~2500 USD Budget)

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 10:12 AM PST

Hey guys, so before I start, I must mention that I do have a beefy gaming PC at home. (i9-12900k and 3080) so whatever laptop I'll be getting won't be my "main PC" per se. However, I would like to have a "powerhouse" with me whenever I am not home. I may or may not be gaming on it. I can't really say for certain.

However, the most important factor for me is portability and battery life, since as mentioned, this will be my "outside" PC. I've considered getting a Macbook Pro 14" but I am honestly torn between Windows/MacOS -- since if I want to game outside, MacOS, as it stands right now, is quite problematic. But also the battery life and overall performance of MBP is certainly undeniable. (Including gaming)

Looking forward to what you guys suggest.

    Recommend a laptop please

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

2500 euro , Country is Malta, but can travel within eu to buy.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    -fill here, remove dashes-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I need to be able to use blender for modelling animating etc,,, and also play games like league of legends, warzone, mmorpg's like elder scrolls online and final fantasy14 and wow, also maybe triple A games like God of war , but most importantly MMORPG and league

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Any MMORPG like I mentioned above, league and warzone, alsol triple A games . For MMORPG's and warzone would like at least 60 fps at high settings, for anything else 60 fps at any setting.

Vietnam - looking for a work-from-home non-gaming laptop for my wife for approx $1100

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:49 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:

Vietnam (Hanoi) - about 1100 USD or 25,000,000 VND

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    No strict priority here.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

My wife would like a light laptop for heavy load work from home, as well as teaching online and to carry with her for teaching in the classrooms, but apart from that no other requirements.

Do you have a preferred screen size?

Definitely not too small, as she often likes to watch movies there. I'd say the average would be best.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No gaming, no video editing. Photo editing, lots of PowerPoint, zoom lessons (she is an online teacher) and other standard office suite apps.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Everything standard + a back-lit keyboard, if possible. Wife likes to draw sometimes with a drawing tablet, but that's not too important and I don't think there are laptops that have that feature built-in?

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've done a bit of research and found that Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 13 would probably be best, but I couldn't find any being sold in Hanoi so that seems to be out of my reach. My second best potential choice so far is Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga, which is available in my area, but I'd still love to hear if there any better suggestions.
