Ruckus Unleashed and Google Nest 802.11 issues.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 02:53 AM PST

I been having lots of issues with Google Nest Cam and did some troubleshooting. The cam would loose internet connection every so often as if the WiFi signal was too weak. I have a Ruckus R510 that is feeding internet to 3 cams in the same area (all pointing to a different area zone of course) along with a couple of other wifi devices that are not having any connectivity issues.

In another area i have a second R510 to which my Nest Thermostat connects and although I haven't noticed any connectivity issues with that device, during my troubleshoot I did see that it is also logging the same error as the rest of the Nest devices around the house. The error is the following:

    802.11 Deauthentication ::: Reason: (code 6)Received class2 frame from non-auth STA

I am not sure what the error means and how to troubleshoot it. Although i did find some info that stated that the APs might be too close to each other and the devices are constantly connecting and disconnecting as they try and find the best signal available. Not sure if that can be it.

Is there a setting i need to play around with on my Ruckus? How can i lower the "reach" of these APs?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Monoprice Cat6 Punch Down Keystone Jack

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:44 AM PST

    Hello,

I was looking at the Monoprice Cat6 Punch Down Keystone Jack and I noticed that the page says "Note that the width of the RJ45 keystones is such that two cannot be used side-by-side in the same wall-plate."

This sucks because I was planning on using a 4-keysone wall plate and having four internet ports (PC, printer, laptop dock, and a spare).

Has anyone tried to use these side by side and had success? Is there a different product I should use?

Wifi speeds drop through access points. More details in post.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:14 AM PST

So, I have a 500 mbps connection, with wifi router provided by the ISP. I get ~460 mbps speed. I don't wish to use the wifi of that router. I have two routers (TPlink Archer AX50 and Archer C60.)

I am using both routers as WAP from the main ISP router and have turned off it's wifi. But now I'm only getting speeds of 200 mbps and 100 mbps respectively of 5 GHz and I have kept the channels separate too. Please suggest how I can get closer to 500 mbps.

Local-only SDN alternatives to Omada and UniFi?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 04:24 AM PST

I'm planning out a network for a new client's small business and wanted to see what else is out there. It seems a lot of the big guys have gone full cloud based now. Or they charge a ridiculous subscription fee. Or both.

Who else besides TP-Link and Ubiquiti offers a free, locally controlled SDN?

    Frontier Gigabit Internet

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 11:02 PM PST

I got a deal that I couldn't refuse today. Frontier stopped by and offered me 1Gbs Internet including router/AP's for the first year and guaranteed pricing of $65/mo for 3 years. Signed up last night and installed today. Speeds show 950/913 on https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat with their router with an A rating for bufferbloat. I was on Comcast spending more per month on 140/11 Mbs so this seems great.

The equipment starts with an ONT for fiber to Ethernet conversion. They then supply an Eero Pro6 mesh system (2-pack) which is a router/AP hub and an auxiliary unit. The AP's are 802.11ax which is better than what I have (802.11ac). The thing that I don't like though is the router -- it's only manageable via my Iphone and has limited settings that you can change.

I don't have great router options at the moment anyway but I still wanted to try them but failed. I think the ONT is tied to the MAC address of the Eero hub. This isn't totally unexpected but I thought that rebooting the ONT would allow it to utilize a new router similar to how a cable modem works but it didn't. The router never got a DHCP address. The routers that I have are the Ubiquiti ER-X and the ER-Lite. I believe the ER-Lite is capable of doing these speeds if QOS is left off and just wanted to do a comparison. I guess I'll try and assign the MAC address of the Eero to my Ubiquiti router and see if that's enough to get the ONT to talk to it. The only other thing I can think of is that the router just needs to be off for an extended period of time before a new one is added so that it no longer has a DHCP lease. I might try that overnight.

Should I even be TRYING to use something different if I can find a way of configuring the firewall rules/reservations/and NAT forwarding that I need? Connection speed and buffer bloat look good. I just hate the idea of configuring a router with a phone app. How could anybody think this was a good idea?

What's a good way to pull a cable using an existing cable?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 12:17 PM PST

The fish tape gets stuck in the far end of the conduit - right at the part in the floor where it starts to go up (It happens when I try from both sides). So I guess the angle there lost its shape over time. (It's an old building)

(I know it's weird that it doesn't get stuck at the same angle if I try from the other side but I guess that's because I have much more force when it's close to me. The fish tape is cheap, so maybe a better fish tape is more rigid and can do it?)

But, each conduit already has a telephone wire. I want to use this wire to pull an Ethernet cable. However, I still want the telephone wire.

*Edit: This is really small conduit, about 1cm in diameter

So I was planning to first pull an Ethernet cable using the telephone wire, and then, pull again but now the Ethernet and the telephone together. I'll do it with all conduits, and then at the end I'll remain with an extra ethernet cable. I'll make some patch cables from it

Max length of cable to pass is about 10 meters.

Would you recommend my method, using an Ethernet cable every time, or, there's a special cable which is even tougher and more tear resistant than that?

And, in any case, I will need to glue the end of the cables together before I pull - what is a good way to make sure it doesn't separate mid-way? (And if there's a specific tape for that job)

    Thanks!

How to bypass country-restricted website without using VPN extension

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 07:51 AM PST

Hi there, I want to build a system that will allow me to access the country-restricted site through my server. I know I can use VPN and currently I am using a VPN extension to access the restricted sites but I want my router to handle this without needing to add a VPN

    My idea is:
    - to build a node server (will be hosted on a service) that will have a table of the restricted domain name.
    - my router will request to my node server and see if the domain name exist on the table
    - if the name exist then it will use the OpenVPN to retrieve the site content
    - if not then use the normal connection

So my question is how do I make the router communicate with my node server first

    Thanks

Masking my IP - using the Oracle cloud to tunnel back home

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 11:36 PM PST

Call me paranoid, but I'd rather hide my home IP address as much as possible. All external services are proxied through Cloudflare which just leaves my Wireguard VPN exposed to the entire world.

Now, I should mention that my primary reasons for setting up wireguard are:

    • Making use of my nextDNS subscription for adblocking anywhere in the world
    • Getting access to internal resources for management

I've recently signed up for the Oracle free tier and have and established an IPSec tunnel between home and the Oracle cloud.

I'd like to do one of the following:

    • Establish wireguard in the oracle cloud, but use my local gateway so all WG traffic looks like it's coming from my home ISP
    • Continue to host wireguard locally, but use an Oracle VM to port forward the WG port to the local VM

Networking is by far not my strongest suit, so at first I thought I could just change up the default route in the Oracle VM like this:

sudo ip route add default via 192.168.1.1

Of course, that didn't work (Nexthop has invalid gateway) and it doesn't look like there's a way I define an external gateway in OCI via the IP-Sec VPN, so I think that rules out option 1.

So that leaves option 2, and I think it might be possible using iptables, but my problem is that I'm not really sure what I need to Google to get the right rules?

Want to hook my gaming computer to the internet but the router is in another room

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:53 AM PST

Want to hook my gaming computer to the internet but the router is in another room

The problem is that I have someone else in the apartment working in the room where the router is. I'm on the other side of the apartment which isn't too far, should I stick with wifi and hope I don't lose internet speed or should I buy another router for my bedroom, would that even work?

Also, the apartment was apparently built in 1993, just in case you wanted to know how old it was. it has landline outlets but I don't really think there's anything I can do with those, especially after they got painted over

Sorry if this doesn't really make sense, I'm sorta new to this kind of stuff haha

Edit: I do also want to mention that my roommate will NOT enjoy it if I string a cable from one bedroom, all the way down the hallway, to my bedroom.

Is the ASUS AX56U worth it in 2022 to keep 10 years?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:52 AM PST

hi im looking for a good router

one person suggested methe AX56U and i found discount on it for 90 euros

, its the AX1800 WiFi-6 model with quad core cpu

is it good coming from an DIR 869 Dlink , the dir869 is a 3x3 MIMO (no idea what it means)

will the range and quality better? i have 100 Down 40Up connection

i also have a problem that when a user upload ( or is live streaming) the connection becomes so buggy and ping skyrockets

with good support ( updates during the years)

and good control over the network like limiting time usage

blocking sites ( like reddit , twitter) and if possible controlling how much bandwith each device use

    i have TVBOX 4k , about 7 phones and 3 consoles pc

    thank you

Is connecting my PC to a WiFi extender with an ethernet cable viable? Or alternatives

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 03:04 AM PST

    Hello.

So, recently I was running a PCI-E card inside my PC which got good speeds (up to 300mbps iirc), but after upgrading GPU there's no space left for it so I have to look for alternatives. Connecting via ethernet to the router isn't an option since it's downstairs. As of right now I'm running a powerline adapter and getting 20 Mbps which is kinda pathetic considering our supplier gives us 1 Gb (+ 5 GHz option).

Since signal is not a problem in my room (my mother's laptop gets 400 Mbps, which is more than enough for me) I have thought about installing a WiFi extender (or repeater, whatever) and connect it to my PC with an Ethernet cable. I have also thought about an USB wifi adapter, but last time I had one it disconnected constantly, maybe it was because it was a cheap one, but I'm not convinced.

What do you think would be my best option? And any product recommendation if possible?

Thank you very much in advance!

Do I need 2 managed Switches?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:47 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

Kinda new to the world of prosumer networking. I'm purchasing an older (1880s) home so I'm in the planning phase of things right now. I'd like to run Ethernet throughout the house. Running Ethernet from the basement up to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd story is going to be a little difficult, so I'd like to run two switches - one in the basement to run an AP and Ethernet to the first floor and another switch in the attic to run Ethernet and an AP down to the 2nd floor.

Ideally, I'd like to run some VLANs to segregate IOT and rate limit certain devices. I'm not sure if this whole plan is ideal, but here's what it looks like right now:

Tplink ER605 Router to both Switch -> AP and Ethernet Switch -> AP and Ethernet

    OC200 SDN Controller

I just have unmanaged switches right now. Do I need two managed Omada switches or just one to accomplish this?

Expanding a network using an old router

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:24 AM PST

Hi! I recently purchased fiber, and got a new router to go with it. (The Icotera i4850). Since it cannot reach all the way through the house, I decided to utilise my old router as an extender, since the house has built-in Ethernet ports in almost every room.

I connected an Ethernet port to the fiber router and the other end to the old router. (The D-Link DWR-953).

I've connected the Ethernet cable to the WAN Port on the old router, and an Ethernet cable to the LAN port of the new router.

The old router doesn't appear to be connected. I've put it in bridge mode, yet it still gives no internet. When I power it on, the POWER, 2.4GHz and 5GHz LEDs turn on, and the WAN and INTERNET LEDs flicker. After some time, the INTERNET LED turns off and the WAN LED keeps being green.

I'd really appreciate you helping me, otherwise I have to live off data 😩

    Getting (re)started after Deco m9+

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 06:20 AM PST

In an attempt to 'be done with it' I purchased a 3-pack of TP Link Deco m9+ for better wifi. It sort of works. For ethernet backhaul in AP mode I have to Daisy chain them to the node that's closest to my modem/router. I cannot freely connect them to my network using a switch or whatever, it all has to end up at that main node, limiting my options. Connecting my pc to a free ethernet port on my furthest node with ethernet backhaul (I do have a cable running to the top floor) gives me slow loading websites (though up-/download is fine).

I want to connect through ethernet where I can, and add wifi for everything else.

In hindsight, I don't think I made the best decision here with the Deco's. Time to educate myself on the subject. I don't think I need mesh, and the most advanced stuff Im doing is forwarding ports.

Where can I start my search for wisdom? Any articles or pointers? Would a drawing of my network topology be useful?

    3 Routers - Endless Heartache

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 12:20 AM PST

Hello kind networkers. I have found myself in some difficulty and I cant seem to figure out a fix. VERY SHORT VERSION: dl and ul speeds drop by about half each time I connect to a new router in my home. (yes - I have tried changing out the LAN-WAN ethernet cables :) ).

Background: I recently moved out of the US to a country with far lower levels of industrialization on the west coast of Africa. The ISP here provides fiber service at various tiers ranging from 10Mbps - 100Mbps. There is no offering greater than 100Mbps, and the 100Mbps service costs about 250USD/month. The house that I live in is constructed entirely out of cinderblocks, concrete, and tile - conventional WiFi is ROUGH. Mesh WiFi with a few nodes works great though. Finally, because of the nature of the country I live in, VPN is an absolute MUST. Ideally, I want my router to have VPN onboard.

Current situation: The ISP fiber box connects in the utility room. CAT5 cable runs for about 200' to the ISP provided router. LAN-WAN (3') into my Asus RT-AC68U with VPN in place and functioning. LAN-WAN (3') into google mesh WiFi router. Speeds from the ISP router (before I got them to put it in bridge mode) were clocking in at 100Mbps dl/10Mbps ul (exactly what I'm looking for). Speed tests from the Asus will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-20Mbps regardless of wired connection, wireless connection, nothing plugged into LAN ports, wireless modes on or off...seemingly any permutation. But wait - it gets worse! If I connect to the mesh, network, the speed drops again to a whopping 3-8Mbps.

Solutions that I have already tried: 1) every. single. combo. of starting and restarting every component. 2) bridge mode enabled on the ISP router. 3) VPN router wireless mode disabled. 4) skipping VPN router and connecting to Mesh Router. 5) different Cat5 cables everywhere in the chain (except through the house...but we know that one is fine because of the initial speed tests through the ISP router). 6) 12+ hours on the phone with my lovely ISP tech service They did something on their end with my MAC address and IP address...not entirely sure. 7) bonus round: ISP personnel and I don't speak the same language, so we are going through lots of google translate.

Help requested: Does anyone have any ideas for things I can try at this point? Is there some rule I'm unaware of that every time something goes LAN-WAN speeds drop by a factor of 2-4? Is there some setting I am unaware of? In the states, I wouldn't really care because I could get much higher speeds coming in, but 8Mbps is just...it's just too slow for my work.

Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!!

Need help accessing a solar panel API through a VPN.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 05:54 AM PST

Hi, As an analytics student I would like to access the data from my parents solar panel inverter API remotely through a VPN. The inverter is connected to their Wifi and the API is accessed through a local IP. Eg. 192.168.x.x/solar_api/...

I'm pretty new to networking so now I'm wondering which steps I should take to get access to the API. I am considering starting with setting up a WireGuard server on an old PC at my parents place and use that to gain access to their home network. Then I would probably have to do some port forwarding or something to access the API from the local IP.

Does this sound doable? And could someone in broad strokes explain the steps/requirements of accessing a local network through a VPN server, so that I know where to start researching this stuff.

    Big thanks in advance!

FTTB/DSL Should I Change my Cable to CAT6 in order to Increase SNR?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 05:47 AM PST

I have 2 different internet provider options. One provides FTTB/ETH but HIGHLY censoring internet and you need to use it for 12 or 24 months. The second one is FTTB/DSL but not censoring anything.

I have both at my home. I am using Asus DSL-AC750 for DSL one. Without changing SNR, it is 12-12.5 dB with 0.9-2.0 dB Line Attenuation. But it creates CRC errors, 400+ for 6 hours. If I change SNR to 20 dB, i still get 0.9-2.0 dB Line Attenuation but my speed decreases as expected to 75 from 100. It also creates CRC but 30-50~ for 3 hours.

Distance between cabinet and modem is around 40m. I am now using wall socket.

Will changing the DSL cable with CAT6 cable, directly from the cabinet to the modem improve the SNR margin (default), with having less or 0 CRC? Or should I use my internet without changing anything (default SNR and default cable) with having 1000-2000 CRC per day?

One last option may be the modem. Also, DSLAM is Broadcom which I have no other option.

I don't want to use FTTB/ETH one because I think it is worse than DSL one, I get only 1/4 speed they provided from different locations.

Add specific route to a particular device in home network from a PC with 2 nICs

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 05:01 AM PST

My desktop PC in home network has 2 Ethernet adapter(mobo inbuilt & a pcie Ethernet card). I have a NAS in my home network which is currently connected to a secondary router acting as wireless extender via wds. I want to connect this NAS directly to my desktop PC in such a way that when I access this NAS then traffic to/from it should flow through the pci Ethernet adapter only while the rest of the traffic from/to my desktop PC should go via the inbuilt mobo Ethernet adapter only. This NAS should also be accessible from rest of the devices within home network.

I have tried some options but with no success. The closest solution I can think of is connecting NAS to PC via pcie Ethernet adapter & manually configure both on default windows internal ip range of 169.x.x.x & then add a route like 169.154.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 169.254.0.1 but that will result in no lan/internet access on NAS except for direct access from desktop PC.

Mesh Wifi recommendations and Pi Hole

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 03:40 AM PST

Hi all, I have recently moved to a new apartment and right now my MoCA router is in one room, and the signal strength in the room, where I work from time to time is not very good, I have big jitter and sometimes the Teams calls get disconnected. I had from my previous flat a Netgear Rx8000 router and used to run OpenWRT on it, so I have decided to try to improve the WiFi signal strength with it, but it didn't work so well, I have a bit better connection, but still a bit shaky. I have moved the router location, put it higher, changed the channel, reduced the channel bandwidth, etc. but nothing helped. I have even tried to install Voxell fw, to no avail. I think that's pretty

So right now I am thinking of switching to Mesh WiFi and I am mostly tending towards Nest Wifi and eero 6. I read a lot of articles and the opinions seem to be diametrically opposite. Some are saying that error is better, while others tend to prefer Nest WiFi. I have a couple of smart devices, like Google Home, Philips Hue, etc. and initially was more inclined to get the hero because of their ZigBee support until I read that their implementation is limited to the Amazon ecosystem. I am also interested in the new Matter standard, but I think both Amazon and Google are planning to support it in their current lineups.

I am also having a Raspberry Pi, on which I am running a PiHole and planning to use it as a DNS provider to all connected devices.

My flat is relatively small, 80sq.m. that's why I need only one router and one satellite unit. I am planning to disable the WiFi network on the MoCa router and use the WiFi network from the Mesh WiFi only. I am interested in the error 6 pro, but unfortunately here in Germany they only offer it with two satellite units and that's definitely going to be an overkill.

Omada Controller and Wired Client problems

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 01:42 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm new to the omada system and currently have an oc200 v1 setup with 1 eap235, 1 eap225 and 1 eap225 outdoor. All are working nicely and talking to each other, but my controller is only showing wireless clients that are connected to one of the eaps. I have a rather large home network that comprises of hard wired pcs and smart home controllers as well as 2 other routers (slowly getting there on upgrading to omada). Everything is running on the same ip address setup. I've even tried connecting my hive hub directly to the ethernet on both the oc200 and the eap235, but my client list in the omada android app and the Web interface still on show wireless clients connected only to an eap.

Is there something I need to do to get omada to show my wired clients/clients on other routers?

    For reference this is my network structure;

Virgin home hub; -dumb tp link switch -cctv dvr -ps4 -switch (wireless) -switch (wireless)

Tp link switch; -Asus dark Knight router -work laptop - dumb mokerlink 16 port poe switch

Mokerlink switch; -eap225 -eap235 -oc200 -home pc -lightwave rf hub -hive hub - 4 cctv cameras - NAS

Asus dark Knight router; -dumb tp link poe switch -fire stick HD -broadlink hub (wireless) - 1 cctv camera (wireless)

Tp link poe switch; -outdoor eap 225 -3 cctv cameras

I see none of the wired devices and only wireless devices connected to 1 of the 3 EAPs
