    Looking for a laptop

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 02:46 AM PST

Hi there, so for the last 8 years I've been using my old pc, it was build by a friend and served me well, kind of.

I'm looking for a laptop for mainly 3d modeling and rendering. And some gaming and dabbling in code for a bit. Don't really care about the screen quality or size, hopefully silent ish , will connect it to another display for actual work, tried to look on my own but got confused, thanks!

Budget: not above 2000 dollars, preferably much less but I'm aware of the pricy circumstances.

Looking for a premium laptop for university [Australia, <$3000]

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 04:14 AM PST

Hi there! I'm hunting for a powerful laptop to get me through my postgrad.

    Budget: <3000 AUD

    Non-negotiables:

    • All-day battery life
    • Fairly cool-running and quiet even under some load
    • Decent keyboard

Would also love a glass trackpad w/o separate mouse buttons (à la Surface & Macbook). Discrete graphics would be nice but not necessary - won't be used for video editing or serious gaming.

Really needs to be something that would look at home in an office too. Love my RGB but won't get away with it. Weight and size aren't an issue if it meets the above.

I've looked at most of the usual premium Ultrabook contenders and they all seem to suffer from the same issues - they run too hot, sound like an Apache helicopter under load, and have disappointing battery life.

Help me Reddit! You're my only hope!

Looking for Laptop Replacement after Lenovo yoga 7i 14" broke on me :/

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 06:12 PM PST

I bought a Lenovo yoga 7i two Christmases ago and last night the left hinge broke and shattered the screen. I went to Best Buy today, and they let me know that my warranty expired and it'd be ~$300 to $400 to replace everything. But I don't want to drop that much just to have it break again because other customers have had this issue :////

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
-$700 USD before tax, and I'm willing to go a bitttt higher. I'm purchasing this in US
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
-Yes, as long as I can get a warranty/insurance
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - Being able to rotate it all the way around to turn it into a tablet (I don't want the keyboard to detach) is the most important thing to me, then build quality, battery life, and performance last
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-I'd like it to be light, but I won't complain
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      -N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-I use Premiere Pro, photoshop, and After Effects often. I do lots of digital paintings and video editing in general.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-I LOOOOOVE being able to flip the screen all the way around to make it a tablet, and use the touch screen like the lenovo yoga 7i. I also like the type C charging port since my phone uses the same one and having a separate charger is a pain. I watch lots of movies on my laptop so I'd prefer a nice screen that can go BRIGHT. I'd like a backlit keyboard, but other than that I won't complain.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-I really liked my lenovo yoga 7i, but I want something durable that'll last me for years to come to replace it since it was too flimsy for me :///

Thank you so much in advance :))))

Photo editing, video editing, maybe some gaming. HP 15-eh?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 03:23 AM PST

Hi. Computer specs confuse me. I'm looking for a laptop that can be used for video and photo editing (Adobe suites), while able to have lots of files open at the same time. And obviously be able to run Chrome and basic stuff simultaneously.

I'd also like for it to be able to handle a few games (with mods). Stuff like WoW, Skyrim, Sims4.

This is the laptop I'm considering.

I'm just not sure the processor, ram, video card and storage are adequate for my needs. Open to other suggestions. Touch screen is a must. I'd like to stay under 2k. Is that even possible? I want something that will last, so please let me know if I need to be open to going higher.

Thanks for reading and for taking the time to help me!

Acer Spin 3 or Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 LTE?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 01:23 AM PST

I already have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 LTE that I use for taking notes in class at the university and a laptop that I'm going to replace with a new one. I am considering to buy a 2in1 laptop, in order to replace both the tablet and the laptop I already have: is that a good idea? Is Acer Spin 3 as good as Samsung Tab for taking notes or should I keep my tablet and just buy a new laptop? Thank you for any advice

Looking for a workstation upgrade and open to some suggestions

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 06:34 PM PST

Currently running a thinkpad p72 with the following specs:
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.21 GHz

Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.8 GB usable)

    Windows 10 Workstation

    3 drives, 1 samsung 980evo nvme 1tb, 1 samsung 970 500gb (Linux drive), 1 2tb Crutial Sata SSD

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      2500 CAD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Preferably
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance, Performance, Performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Considering my current laptop is 7lbs... not much. I want something with good cooling
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15-17 inches. No smaller
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Blender, Unity and many IDE's. Also a decent bit of virtualization
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
N/A - I have an external GPU dock which I would use so As long as it has thunderbolt 3 or 4 I am fine with a low spec GPU, CPU is my main concern, I have 6 cores now but I would like 8 or more
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Useable keyboard, preferable 4 ram dim slots and multiple drive bays (nvme and or sata)
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My current PC is good but it struggles with some virtual machines I run where I need more CPU cores. I need a laptop as it is for school and contract work I do. My current pc is more than enough 90% of the time, but I am starting to feel the CPU be a major bottle neck and need more cores. If suggestions have lower ram or storage that is fine as I can easily upgrade them myself. Also no computer with soldered on ram and drives. I regularly upgrade and swap out components when needed.

My main issues is all the machines I find that would be suitable either have bad cooling solutions or are way overkill on the GPU which eats up the budget. I do not need an amazing GPU - low end is fine for this.

For a CS student: Mac air M1 vs Dell XPS 15 vs Yoga slim 7 pro

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 12:21 AM PST

I'll be attending college as a computer science major this fall. I've been searching up laptop recs for 4 days on my 8 years old Samsung laptop, but still am not sure what to buy as a CS student.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      -$1000 USD ± $200
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      -No, unless with warranty/insurance
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      - primed for programming (keyboard, screen & screen ratio, battery) and taking general CS courses. (If anyone majored in CS, I'd really appreciate your input!).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
-As a college student, extremely important since I'll be carrying it around everywhere.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
-13 in to 15 in (portability & weight > screen size)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
-Premium Pro, Photoshop, Krita. The only game I play is slither.io.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      -N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-good keyboard(disliked ASUS Zenbook 13), backlit keyboard, having both USB C & USB port highly preferred, bright screen and great audio for streaming, SLIM and aesthetic (disliked ThinkPad laptops)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My top choices are Macbook air M1, Dell XPS 15, and Yoga slim 7 pro: the three most reoccurring recs I've found online... If there are better or 'more fit' ones, please tell me!

-Major use: take CS course, Youtube & Netflix, use during potential internships, personal mid-scale web development, mid-scale digital art and video editing as hobby (photoshop, premium pro, and other lighter editing software)

-Major fear: choosing the wrong OS and having to miss out on a good CS course--or even worse, buying another laptop. I read so much about partition and boot camps, but I would love to just play it safe? Will be buying either a galaxy tab or an iPad depending on my laptop's OS, if that's any relevant.

-Major goal: to not stand out and buy a good generic student laptop. AKA if my computer has a problem(Ex. downloading a course-specific software), several others have the same one so I'm not alone.

Thank you so much for reading such a long post, and thank you again in advance!

Upgrading from 2016 Dell 13 inch laptop which is painful to use for photo editing

    Posted: 06 Feb 2022 12:19 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    100,000 JP / 700+ GBP / Maybe 1k USd or a little more

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Very open to used or refurb but need some sort of payment plan option and probably insurance plan?

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance, screen size

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't care but low weight will be useful as I take to work every day

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

17 with 120hz preferred. My current 13 incher is giving me pain

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

My hobby is Photoshop and lightroom 1000s of photos. I also want to do 1080 video editing

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Sometimes/rarely Dota 2 and indie adventure games like Soma. 120hz is for Dota

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Yes I want to pay by some payment scheme like over 12 months . I live in Japan but I have a UK card I can make payments with. I'm also open to used/refirb with this option. I don't know if breakage insurance is important but I think I want it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Tldr

Location Japan but can use UK card online.

    17 inch with 120hz preferred.

Light gaming, enthusiast photo editing, 1080p non-enthusiast video editing.

    Windows preferred.

Refirb/used OK if I can still pay monthly plan.

Budget 1000 USD on monthly payment plan.

Urgency low, I can wait a few months.

    Therefore, any comment is welcome.

Specifically are there some older like 2020 machines I should look for in refirb or used? If so where, given that I need shipping to Japan and want payment plan and some form of breakage insurance/etc?

    Thank you

Edit: seems like there will be a large price jump if I want 17 inch instead of 15.5

    Laptop for Business Major

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 09:59 PM PST

I really need to buy a laptop in the next few days.

Purpose: College/university business major; business classes.

Budget: under $1,100 CAD (but will still consider up to $1,500).

    Software: Windows OS or iOS

Memory: 8GB RAM minimum, better if 16GB RAM. Storage: 256-512GB SSD.

Size: 14" max and smaller is ok.

Other: Mainly looking for a good lasting battery life and strong hardware that won't break after a year; won't be gaming too much but I still want it to handle some games.

Considerations so far: Surface Laptop Go 12.4" Intel i5; Lenovo Yoga 7I Intel i5; MacBook Pro 13.3" (over my budget but if it's really that good I might splurge).

    Cheap Rocket League Laptop

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 12:24 PM PST

Hey all, my XPS 15 bricked recently, and the time has come for me to buy a new laptop. In reality, i only need one for doing a bit of paperwork, Netflix, and Rocket League. Of course, the only thing that really matters there specs-wise is RL requirements:

    Rocket League Recommended Requirements

    CPU: Info

CPU SPEED: 3.0+ GHz Quad core

    RAM: 8 GB

OS: Windows 7 (64 bit) or Newer (64 bit) Windows OS

VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, AMD Radeon RX 470, or better

    PIXEL SHADER: 5.1

    VERTEX SHADER: 5.1

    FREE DISK SPACE: 20 GB

    DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 3072 MB

I really don't want to spend a lot of money just for playing it a few hours a week, but I do enjoy it quite a bit and play competitively, so, i figured I'd see if it's possible to keep it on the low end.

That being said, i don't mind if it's new or not as long as it's functioning properly and makes for an enjoyable experience when I go to play.

It would be mostly plugged in, so, battery is less important. I'm flexible on other specs. I can deal with low quality speakers or fan noise...I just want to be able to have a drink and play the game.

Thanks in advance for reading and for input. Cheers.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
A usual laptop (non 2-in-1, touch screen, etc.) would be perfectly fine. I don't need too much performance other than to compile some lines of code. I do plan on doing some front-end stuff, but no video editing or the like.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The lighter the thinner, the better..but not sacrificing that for power.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      greater than 15 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No. Mostly compiling code and doing front-end web development work.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Nothing extremely graphic intensive; not a selling point.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-Keyboard preferable with the numpad..but not a dealbreaker at all. No touchpad preferable (don't really care). No touch-screen.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
If possible, would like to purchase from Best Buy as I have a $100 gift card for them that I won in a raffle. Not a deal breaker at all if not from Best Buy. I don't want to spend a ton of money, but to get the most bang-for-buck with my $500-$600 range. I plan on doing some front-end coding and casual internet browsing.

Asus Vivobook 16x Oled vs Lenovo Thinkbook 16P, which one should I get?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 10:57 AM PST

I'm torn between these 2. My purposes are mainly for school stuff, coding, video editing, movies, and gaming (I play every kind of games from oldschool to modern AAA)

Asus Vivobook 16x Oled: - $1550 total - Oled screen, 4k 16" - Ryzen 7 5800H - RTX 3050 Ti - 16gb Ram (cannot upgrade) - 1TB SSD (1 more slot) - Touchpad is placed in the center - only 1 USB C port and cannot be used to charge - Heat exhaust below the lid, blows at the screen

    Lenovo Thinkbook 16P G2: - $1300 total - IPS 2k 16" screen - Ryzen 5 5600H - RTX 3060 - 16gb Ram (upgradeable) - 512gb SSD (1 more slot) - RTX 3060 - 2 USB C ports, can be charged - Can open lid 180 degrees - No HDMI - Heat exhaust in the back

Getting a laptop and I could use a little advice

    Posted: 05 Feb 2022 10:26 AM PST

In a couple of weeks, I'm getting a new laptop and I'm not as tech savvy as I'd like to be. I should be looking at a $1200-$1500 range. I'm open to refurbs but reluctant since I feel like a new computer is more future resistant, but I'm open to getting something slightly below the listed requirements that can be upgraded without too much difficulty.

It needs to have at least a 15.6 screen. I'm going to be using it for websurfing, casual photoshopping (like meme stuff, nothing professional) and gaming. Most of the gaming will be older games but I'd like to try out more modern games, too, with the graphics turned down. Games like Final Fantasy 14 and Cyberpunk 2077.

    Any suggestions?

Suggest me a laptop to break into the world of cybersecurity!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1,000 ideally, but possibly a few hundred bucks more, say, to ~$1,300?
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality, performance, and battery life > form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important. It'll be stationary most of the time, so I'm cool with occasionally lugging it around.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I think I'm indifferent? I eventually want to run multiple VMs once I reach that learning curve. I don't know if running multiple VMs requires more screen estate, or if it's just a preference.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No CAD, video editing, or photo editing. But maybe gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
If I decide to game, I'll only play Overwatch and CSGO on the lowest settings—and I wouldn't be playing everyday (as much as I'd like to). I mean, 100FPS would be awesome but, again, gaming won't be a priority.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
For reference, I currently have an ASUS C302 and really, really love its keyboard. Feel-wise, that's my only frame of reference. In terms of functionality, I've read certain keyboard layouts are more conducive to cybersecurity/programming (i.e., limiting the need to bind and set up hotkeys), but I really don't know. I definitely want reliable build quality. Don't give a rat's ass about touch-screen or a finger-print reader. I don't think I'll need an optical drive or good input devices, but maybe? (See my response below.)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This is actually more of a preface, but you should know I'm purchasing this device to break into the world of cybersecurity. I'm self-studying for CompTIA A+, Net+, and Sec+. I eventually want to continue on to CySA+, CCNA, RedHat RHCSA, Microsoft Azure AZ-500 Security or AWS Certified Security, one of the GIAC certs (whichever's most applicable to my interest area when I reach this stage), OCSP, CEH, CompTIA PenTest+, and finally the CISSP.—all in that order I know this'll take me a very long time to accomplish—upwards of a decade—especially since I'm self-studying. At a certain point, I'll build my own PC and start expanding my homelab. So, I'm looking for a laptop that'll take me to the furthest point of this cybersecurity journey. I'd love to dabble in coding and programming, too, and I'd love for the device to be as Linux-friendly as possible. I know it's recommended to separate cybersecurity from personal, and have a dedicated device for each one. My ASUS C302's still running strong after 5 years, and I intend to run it to the ground. When that happens, I'll have to use the device you're suggesting as my personal device as well. Personally, I don't do much: just surf Reddit, read and respond to work emails, Google Suite, and stream on platforms like HBO Max and Hulu. I Zoom on my work laptop (ThinkPad X390), so I don't think a webcam's necessary. Speaking of which, should I just use my work laptop for all this? Lol. I literally only use it for a few Zoom meetings Mon–Fri...
