Question about a dedicated graphics card in a laptop

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 07:06 AM PST

I'm looking at buying a laptop with a 3060 in it which can run up to 140W. I know that you need it plugged in to use it, however. It supports 100W usb-c charging, however. I'm assuming this isn't enough to run the PC while also using the 3060.

The question is, can I undervolt the GPU somehow to make it accessible while charging through USB-C, or how does this work? This is the first time I would be with a computer with a graphics card, so I don't know how it works.

All i want is to know if there's a way to use the graphics card without using the big clunky charger that it'll come with.

Laptop is this https://www.newegg.com/mecha-gray-asus-tuf-gaming-f15-fx507zm-es74/p/N82E16834236099?Item=N82E16834236099 if you need to know

Looking for a laptop that is useful for video editing

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 07:06 AM PST

I started doing freelance work as a video editor and am looking into investing in a new laptop since the one I have currently isn't powerful enough to handle a lot of the projects that I have been working on. I currently own a Early 2015 MacBook Pro with 8 GB of memory and about 121 GB of storage. I edit off a hard drive which helps, but since I use Adobe Creative Suite products (Premiere, After Effects, Media Encoder, etc.), the process to edit is still very slow and time consuming.

I would like to be able to have a laptop that I can easily edit off of and also do other work since I am a college student without dealing with performance issues.

Any suggestions help and I can provide more details if needed.

I'm looking to play some games on my fairly low-end laptop.

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 06:48 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I got my laptop as a gift from my parents about a year and a half ago. Until now, I've only been using it for school and homework, with a bit of entertainment on the side; apart from that, I haven't really been using my laptop for a lot of heavy work. Recently though, I've been looking to play some games and I was wondering if I would be able to run any games on this laptop at all.

    I'll list the specs...

    - It's an HP Probook 440 G5.

    - Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

    - Processor : Intel Core i7-8550U with 1.8 GHz

    - RAM : 8 GB

    - Graphics : Intel UHD Graphics 620 and NVIDIA GeForce 930MX

    - I also do have an external monitor I connect to sometimes, whenever I need a bigger screen. It's from DELL. It's got a 1920 x 1080 resolution and a 60.000 Hz refresh rate. Also an 8-bit depth if that's important.

I think that's all the important specs? If there's any I haven't listed, please feel free to let me know and I'll update it as soon as I can.

I don't really know much about laptops or PC's. I've looked around on the internet for a while, and I know that my laptop isn't the best at all. Therefore, I'm definitely not looking to run the latest or high-end games at all. Would there be any games I'd be able to play? And would there be anything I could do/adjust to make my laptop run the best it can?

Also, for anyone who might know...I've heard a lot about a game called Skyrim, and since it is a very old game, maybe my laptop will be able to manage it? I've found that the latest version of the game was released last year, and I've also found that you can mod the game. Do you think my laptop will be able to handle all of that?

And aside from games, would there be anything I could do to make my laptop run better in general?

Also, the external display (the DELL monitor) says it's connected to the 'Intel UHD Graphics 620'. Is there a way to connect it to the NVIDIA even though it is a laptop?

We don't really have a lot of money, therefore I don't think I would be able to upgrade my laptop or get a PC or any components/gadgets that might help me out at all. I've only got $50, which I've been saving up to buy a game if I got the chance to.

Thank you so much for reading, I'd be thankful for any help or even any thoughts at all!

Also, if there's anything I haven't mentioned that I should have, please feel free to let me know and I'll update it as soon as I can.

And I was thinking about posting this on more than one subbreddit to get as much feedback as possible, so I apologise if you see my post on more than one subbreddit.

    Thank you!

Alot of the options are greyed out in MSI afterburner, i looked everywhere online but couldnt find a solution to this

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 06:47 AM PST

I just bought an MSI gaming laptop. It’s my first laptop. My issue is when I plug it in to charge the block in the charger gets extremely hot to where it will burn my hand after a couple seconds. Is this normal? Should it be getting this hot or is there something wrong with it?

    Thanks in advance ;)

    Advice on Purchasing First Macbook

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 06:13 AM PST

    Hello

I am a Medicine Student about to start University within the coming few weeks, and am interested in purchasing a Macbook, but am quite stuck between the various choices (especially considering the number of options there are)

Currently I have narrowed down my potential options to the M1 Macbook Air ($1349 in Australia), or the 14" Macbook Pro ($2760 in Australia).

I would like this device to last me (hopefully) until I finish medical school, which will take approximately 6 years, so the specifications of the device must be able to last until then. To be honest, I'm not too sure how intensive studying as a medical student will actually be, as I am currently under the impression that I will just have a LOT of chrome and word tabs open to take notes and do research. However, I am aware that I may also pick up some hobbies along the way, which may require stronger hardware. I am also planning on using this Macbook with an external monitor, if that may help in narrowing down my options. Can someone please provide me some input?

Also, I have only used windows computers for the vast majority of my life. Will the transition into MacOS be difficult?

    Thanks

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 04:28 AM PST

I found a gateway laptop. It's name is gateway nv55c, ram 3gb DDR3L, cpu arrendale p6100, 320gb 5400 rpm sata drive. What options do I have with it? Would mostly be using it for retro gaming such as the original nes to ps1 games. PC games may not play on it. Came with windows 7 home. Will be upgrading it to windows 10. Any ideas for it?

What is better for a college student, a 2-in-1 laptop, or a tablet and a traditional laptop?

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 04:10 AM PST

Hi. So I am graduating in about 4 months, and I was planning on selling my stationary PC and buying a laptop for college, mainly because it is way handier than having to wait until you get home to do assignments. Now, I have no idea about laptops at all. I have been asking friends and some are like "No don't get this brand" or "Just get this instead" and it just made me more confused. My mother suggested that I should get a MacBook air and add a Wacom drawing tablet since the iPads are expensive. But then some of my friends are suggesting to get a Xiaomi Pad 5 and like an HP Envy 13, or they just said go with a 2-in-1 laptop. Essentially I just want to take digital notes but also have the comfortability of being able to write assignments on a laptop and maybe play some games from time to time.

Resale value of Surface Book 2 + Surface Pen

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 03:21 AM PST

I was wondering about the resale value (in the US - particularly NY or CT but will sell online) of my used 13.5" Surface Book 2 with these specs: I7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GTX 1050 (Model: HN4-00001, SKU:6145605).

I am selling it with a Surface pen and an official 127W Charger (a brand new version comes with a 102W Charger). It works perfectly, the only flaw is a dent on the back (just above the pen in the photos).

    Secondary Laptop for note-taking/entertainment

    Posted: 22 Feb 2022 12:19 AM PST

I am currently using an ipad for note taking for schooland watching videos, reading, etc. While I always like the iPad, the OS sometimes drives me crazy especially when typing up essays on the google docs app.

I want a secondary device that is portable/light so I don't have to bring it around, <$500 since it's mostly a secondary laptop, has a stylus & touch screen & keyboard, can use microsoft office (particularly one note).

Budget gaming laptop with good sharp display fhd

    Posted: 21 Feb 2022 11:10 PM PST

1080p, 14' or 15' panel. Even older model is fine as long as it has at least 1060. I used to have msi gt62vr and the screen is so grainy or pixelated. Sorry if I described it wrong. I saw one at the mall it looks sharper than my screen even tho it has same specs. I'm not sure what brand it was cuz we were rushing.

Please recommend entry level gaming laptop with good sharp and bright display. Im ok with 40-50fps for gaming since i don't really play fast paced fos games.

    Help, spilled tea

    Posted: 21 Feb 2022 07:23 PM PST

So my cousin spilled sweet tea on my laptop. Not too much but still spilled some on the keyboard. He turned it off immediately and actually took the laptop apart. (He builds pc) he let it dry for 2 days and the laptop works. But should I still take it to a place to see if the inside is okay? He couldn't get into the do inside because of small screws. Please let me know. Also do fixing places have a free estimate to check my laptop? Thanks.
