Bad bufferbloat with brand new, wired-only router Posted: 26 Feb 2022 09:04 PM PST Hey everyone, I've been struggling with really bad ping spikes in all games over hardwired to router internet. I replaced the router, given it was a pretty old model... unfortunately no dice. I'm currently waiting on a reply from my ISP. They're a company that essentially borrows a line from a bigger provider, so it takes a while for them to bring someone in. Is there anything else I should try before I have someone come and look at the situation? [link] [comments]

Absolutely flabbergasted - did i cook my ethernet port in my pc somehow? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:43 PM PST So, I've been experiencing some extremely strange behaviour on my PC this evening. Let me try and explain this as thoroughly as possible. I have a basic home network at the moment. I have a 1gbps fiber connection coming out of my wall, which plugs into my TELUS Wi-Fi Hub. I have two PCs in my office. Let's call them my HOME PC and my WORK PC. Most days, my WORK PC is plugged into my TELUS Wi-Fi Hub via a cat6 ethernet cable. My HOME PC is usually connecting via wifi. This configuration resulted in usually about 1gbps for my WORK PC and around 250mbps for my HOME PC, as there is a lot of wifi traffic in my apartment building. Occasionally I would take the ethernet cable out of my WORK PC and swap it into my HOME PC so I could get more speed. Whenever I did this, my HOME PC would also experience about 1gbps from the wired connection. Today, I purchased a Netgear GS308 gigabit switch, so that I could split my ethernet across both PCs. I used cat6 cables for all connections, but noticed after I plugged everything in that my WORK PC was getting 1gbps and my HOME PC was now getting only 100mbps. I figured something was up with the switch so I unplugged everything and plugged my HOME PC directly back into the Wi-fi Hub with a cat6 cable, but my ethernet connection on my HOME PC was staying at 100mbps. I thought, maybe something happened to the cable, so I tested it on other machines and found they all worked fine with 1 gbps. So now, after simply unplugging an ethernet cable from my HOME PC a couple of times, my machine now seems incapable of reaching anything above 100mbps no matter what cable or device I plug into it. I did a full reset on my Wifi Hub. I did a full network reset on my HOME PC. Nothing has helped, and I'm now losing about 90% of the speeds I previously had. I even tried opening my network connection properties and changing the speed negotiation settings, but that hasn't helped either. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them! Can my wifi owner see the things I search up on Google? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 07:31 PM PST If I searched up "How to do a backflip" on google, would my wifi owner be able to see what I specifically searched for or would it show that I searched up google? [link] [comments]

Can't hardwire to the modem with desktop or laptop, but works with a router. Posted: 26 Feb 2022 08:36 PM PST So this is a weird problem. I am paying for 1Gbps, using a Netgear CM2050V modem and a Netgear r6400v2 router. Now I know I am not going to get anything huge, but I was still expecting around 700 to 800 Mbps, but only getting 190 tops with a hardwired set up to my desktop and laptop. I wanted to check out the issues, well I noticed right away when I connect the ethernet cable from my modem directly to my laptop it doesn't connect to the internet and just says identifying. So doing a little moving and with a long cable I tried to connect my desktop directly to my modem and the same thing. However my modem connects to my router no issues, this leaves me with the issue I can't test the speed coming off my modem, and so I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before as I have not. Looking to add firewall to home network Posted: 26 Feb 2022 02:13 PM PST I run a Minecraft server from time to time and I've noticed a lot of unwanted traffic attempting to connect to it (so much that streaming and other services would lag until I disabled the port forwarding), which has lead me to disabling my port forwarding. I'm thinking a firewall needs to be added to my setup and would like some advice/recommendations on non bank busting yet capable firewalls [link] [comments]
Frustrating wifi coverage in apartment Posted: 26 Feb 2022 07:10 PM PST I hope this is the right place to discuss my wifi issue.... We have Shaw internet and Modem. The wifi is so poor for streaming and using my PC in my bedroom in spite of having extenders. I bought some new extenders but suspect I purchased a product that doesn't work as advertised OR I don't know how to install. Either way I haven't been able to get the new gear to work. Alternately would getting a router and connecting to the modem be a better solution? I would have to get someone in (to run cable above the ceiling) if I wanted to hardwire my pc to the modem. However, I don't think that would improve my bedroom wifi reception for streaming on my TV? I can rarely watch an entire movie without losing the wifi. This apartment isn't that large so I'm hoping for some advice on what to do. Note: I live with my Father who is not receptive to making changes without a compelling reason. Thanks for listening XD [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Feb 2022 04:54 PM PST So I just bought the Asus RT-AX86U to replace my orbi rbr50. I'm getting significantly slower speeds. What am I doing wrong here? Both wireless and wired are extremely slow. I have 500mbps on fiber and am only pulling 35mbps wired. I put my phone onto the 5ghz channel and am only pulling 207mbps. I was pulling 370mbps with my orbi. [link] [comments]
ER7206 Router or OPNSense for Firewall? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 12:52 PM PST Hello, I'm trying to figure out how I should configure my router and my dedicated OPNSense firewall/VPN box. Part of my confusion is physical network topology, then the configuration part next... Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've apparently forgotten most of my routing and network configuration class from a decade ago. I have these two devices. Protectli VP2410 Firewall/VPN Connection
Config Guides https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/er7206/ My confusion is how do I setup the chain? Should it be ISP <-> Protectli Box <-> ER7206 Router <-> Network Switches Or ISP <-> ER7206 Router <-> Network Switches & Protectli VPN I want to keep my internal network DHCP server on the ER7206 Router (for Vlan and also ease of visibility/configuration with Omada SDN). I would also like to be able to log into my VPN box from computers on the network to make adjustments, pull logs, detect issues if suddenly network goes down of is it me or my ISP (again.....). I thought it I connect my router WAN to the Protectli box LAN, and Protectli WAN to ISP, that I wouldn't be able to log into the Protectli box from devices on my network. But if there is a massive advantage to the Protectli Box having better firewall and security than I guess I may have to do that option. I also don't want to route all of my network traffic through the VPN connection (as some devices fail to work well when your location keeps jumping around). Lastly... Later I will also have a 2nd ISP for my house (Hurry up Starlink!), and I know my er7206 router can easily handle that if it's the last device. And I want to configure my Raspberry Pi as a Pi Hole later as well. (not part of this, but thought I'd mention it in case it affects the network design) So any suggestions would be amazing, and please ask if I didn't explain something enough! . [link] [comments]
Posted: 26 Feb 2022 06:14 PM PST Hi, Currently I have 3 Nest Wifi routers in my house. One has the internet hardwired to it, and the other Nest Wifi routers are effectively acting as extenders. I want to have a hard wired solution for my computer in the basement. So I'm thinking of dusting off my Linksys EA4500 router. I would connect the internet to that, and also connect my Nest Wifi router so it can connect to my other Nest Wifi Routers. But I will also hardwire from my Linksys Router and drag that wire into my basement so my computer can get direct access to the internet. I'm doing this so my internet connectivity for my basement computer is always prioritized over other devices in my house. Any thoughts on this? Good idea? Any problems with that? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 02:40 PM PST I think I will be adding more wired ethernet to attic of my two-story house. Networking home runs are in basement. Switches, Router, Cable Modem. 2 CAT5s are up in Attic but no way to add more to my knowledge. Basement has open 1G Ethernet ports, 10G Switch interconnects. Likely going Attic top sill > 2nd Floor wall sill > Garage ceiling > lower 1ft of Garage wall poke it into Basement. I think I'd add at least 4 CAT6 drops, maybe more for overkill. So, I am thinking maybe adding adding a switch upstairs with 10G fiber uplink might just be easiest? Thoughts? [link] [comments]
How do you test your ethernet cables? Posted: 26 Feb 2022 06:42 AM PST Hello there! I'm trying to build my first home network. Any recommendations on units to test ethernet cables and wall sockets particularly the quality of the cable and if possible the type and quality, etc.? I never been into cabling and any advice and/or feedback would be helpful. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Trying to get into a 726GE-I Calix Router/modem Posted: 26 Feb 2022 04:16 PM PST I'm a consumer and not sure if I can. I need to be able to. I tried 192.168.1.1 and a few others but it just hangs. I don't want to connect directly. Admittedly, I am trying this on Android. I tried to post this in /r/networking but the mods removed the thread even if the users were being helpful. Things I tried: -The stupid Command IQ app. Didn't work. Just says 'we are unable to connect at this time.' And it says 'please onboard your router' so I could be doing something wrong. But I scan the QR code which says 'we are unable to connect at this time.' -Trying from browser which just hangs the whole time with the 192 address. [link] [comments]
Having issues with SSH, please help Posted: 26 Feb 2022 07:24 PM PST I'm getting this error, idk how to resolve it. I'm trying to set up SSH from my laptop to my NUC. I have set up SSH on my NUC following this guide: https://devconnected.com/how-to-install-and-enable-ssh-server-on-ubuntu-20-04/ I then followed this guide to set up SSH keygen: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-ssh-keys-on-ubuntu-20-04 [almost. the only thing different was I included -t ed25519] However, I found I was having some weird troubles with SSH keygen-pair-matching. I'm not quite sure what exactly happened but I was able to log in not only from my personal laptop, but I also was able to log in from a third unrelated laptop when I was testing this. I'm not sure why or how I kept being able to log in. I tried to create a new keygen pair, so I did and deleted the administrative_keys and administrative_keys2 from the document. This did not rectify the problem. So then I did what I think is the dumbest thing ever. I uninstalled SSH on my nuc, and then reinstalled it following the above guide. I then tried to create a new keygen pair which is leading to the error I'm getting above. Can somebody help troubleshoot me through this? I'm not sure how to fix this but I hope it is fixable... Thank you edit: I think I fixed it by doing ssh-keygen -R ip_address_or_hostname. But when I go to login to the server from terminal, I am not asked for a password?? [link] [comments] |
