I'll mention few laptops with price which is available in my country (converted in usd).I chose these laptops as they are trending currently and have some offer on them

I'm buying a laptop for programming and for other basic stuff (I probably won't play games but if I change my mind in the future I'm sure these laptops are enough for light gaming )so for me multi-tasking , battery life ,build quality , less heating and durability kinda matters .

Please give you're opinions on the laptop and which one will be suitable for programming and also it would be really helpful if you talk about longevity of the laptop as I'm planning to use it for 3-4 years at least

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

This laptop is going to be a christmas gift to me from family, but money's kind of tight and I don't want to waste it on anything too frivolous. Budget is probably under $500, but preferably closer to $300. United States is country of purchase.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not in this case. I really want something new and fresh that I can be confident will work right out of the box.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life is extremely important, as I will be illustrating or writing for several hour stretches at a time, pretty much almost daily, and I don't want to be tethered to the wall outlet. It needs to not overheat too easily while doing that. Performance is also important, my past laptop did nothing but lag, freeze and stutter anytime I opened a program. I've almost forgotten what it was like to just open a browser within a couple of minutes instead of closing automatic app popups and then waiting 30...

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I need it to be fairly lightweight if possible, as I have some chronic illnesses/arthritis that make it uncomfortable to hold heavy things for long. But it needs to be semi-durable (I have clumsy housemates and pets, and while I'll try to keep them away from it, accidents might happen).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I'd like a decently large and clear screen, as it will mostly be for freelance illustration and some gaming.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I create artwork on Medibang, and would enjoy messing around with Blender, Renpy and other visual novel programs, and possibly animate. I will be doing some light gaming on Steam and Epic. I'd very much like to do streams or youtube videos of the art/gaming process (no facecam or rigs, just what's happening onscreen with maybe some music or voice).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'm primarily a console gamer, so I mostly only do some lower end games on a laptop. Spore, Visual Novels/Dating Sims, Shadowrun Trilogy, etc. However, I'd like to upgrade so that things like Slime Rancher or Civ 5 & 6 don't take a literal hour or more to load up and lag for minutes every turn, and if possible to play some games like Nioh, Alien: Isolation, Darksiders, etc. Or just to at least play Minecraft and Skyrim with mods. I don't know what FPS I would need, I've never measured that or cared much when console wars compare them lol. I guess I usually use low or medium settings, or the defaults.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It does have to be a laptop, I don't have room to set up a full desktop pc, and I have no interest in trying to build one/interchange parts. I realize that would allow for a more specialized machine, but it's just not in the cards or my skillset right now.

Needs to hold up for light day-to-day work: General writing documents/sending emails and invoices, etc. My main requirement is that I work as a freelance artist so I need something that will be able to handle being powered on for several hours at a time without overheating/crashing, and will support a drawing tablet (I think mine is the kind that plugs in seperately, not where you draw on the actual screen. It's a Huion tablet). I'd prefer not to be constantly tethered to the wall for power, so long battery life is a must. I use Medibang as an art program and it has pretty much all the features I need. I'd just like something where the colours onscreen will be accurate/avoid serious screenburn. If it could handle very occasional livestreaming, that would be great.

An accurate and durable keyboard. I write a lot, often. Some game controls require a lot of rapid tapping/combos. Also, I have cats that WILL stomp across my lap no matter what's in the way

    Optional features:

A CD/Disc drive. I still have old computer games and physical music I'd really like to use if possible, but I can live without it. I never watch movies/shows on a laptop, nor do I have any programs requiring disc installs, so this isn't required.

A touch screen. I'm not sure how often I would use it compared to a wireless mouse or my tablet's stylus. I wouldn't mind it I guess, but I have no interest in paying extra just for that feature.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm not knowledgeable about pcs or terms for all the tech/specs at all. I don't even really understand what RAM is, or how much I would need. I don't know about CPUs, GPUs, the different types of graphic cards or whatever expensive chip is hard to find now. Trying to look stuff like that up on my own gets confusing, especially when so much of what a 'good' computer is can vary based on who you ask (ex. Some find 'potato' pcs perfectly fine/functional, others consider only the best framerate/speed worthy and despise anything less.)

I only grew up with the big clunky family pc on a desk, and then later, the one family laptop we'd all share that I imagine was a fairly cheap one. My father would just replace those every 5-8 years when they finally kicked the bucket (although tbh, most of them died when he'd manage to physically break them/riddle with viruses in some way or another lol. I'm much more careful on my own so that hopefully won't be an issue). I have no idea what the specs were on any of those and unfortunately can't check now because they're long gone.

So when giving advice, if you're suggesting specific amounts of RAM or whatever, please explain why like I'm five years old. I also don't need the best of the best, just something that will work smoothly and reliably for my art. That's the biggest priority. As long as I can do that I could save for a gaming upgrade later. Though I would really enjoy being able to do those streams or speedpaint videos.

I was recently looking at HP Intel Core i3 Laptop (11th gen, 15.6" HD Display, 8GB RAM, 256GB Storage), for $279. Would that be any good, or is the RAM and Storage too low?

Looking for an Ultraportable, ~1100 USD

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 04:28 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

<1100 USD/1000 EUR. Actual purchase will be in Russia and I will be looking for the best deal available locally.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Build quality=Ultrabook=Battery life>2 in 1.

I would obviously love a 2 in 1 ultrabook with great battery life, but you have to make a few compromises in this price range.

Build quality is extremely important. I tend to run my hardware until it croaks, and I'm not the best at handling it gently, although I have gotten better. My previous laptop was a ~500 USD acer with a plastic shell and, well, 30% of that shell is in pieces, and the rest is held together by duct tape and prayers.

Performance-wise any (modern) quad core with hyperthreading would do, all else being equal I will take a cheaper 3500u machine over a more expensive i5-1135G7 machine.

Memory configuration must be dual channel by default, I don't really care about upgrading memory on my ultraportable. 16 gig is preferred, 8 is pushing it but I might seriously consider it if it saves me a lot of money.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Thinness by itself is relatively unimportant, although I would prefer a thinner laptop to a thicker one if all else is equal.

Weight: anything under 1.5 kilos is fine by me.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-14 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Primary usecase is working with documents, writing and browsing with an unhealthy amount of tabs open.

Secondary usecase is light gaming if the APU allows it (which every modern APU does, so, not an issue).

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Touch screen would be good.

Fingerprint reader would be fantastic, but is probably a tall order.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The current choices I am most likely to settle on if nothing else satisfies me are:

    • ASUS Zenbook UX425
    • Honor Magicbook 14
    • Huawei Matebook 14

If it were not for build quality, I would probably just choose the best available specs, but reliability/build quality complicates things.

Another thing is support. I realize this probably varies heavily, but I would like to not be told to fuck off if my battery swells within 2 years of use.

Surface Pro 8 vs Lenovo Yoga 6 vs Dell Inspiron

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 01:29 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
depends on the features, but ideally under $1500 USD. Would prefer $600-$1000.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
ultrabook/light/thin is very important; prefer touchscreen but doesn't have to be full 2-in-1. Battery life of at least 6 hours but prefer 8-10.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      very important, under 3 lbs
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13.3" preferred, up to 14"; no smaller than 13.3"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
no, mostly Office apps and web browser. Must be Windows, not Chromebook.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      n/a
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
backlit keyboard, touch screen are high priorities.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've been looking at laptops, and keep talking myself into and out of decisions so I'm looking for advice. I like the concept of the Surface Pro 8, but I use my computer on my lap a lot, and I'm worried about the ability to do this with the Surface Pro. I've considered the Surface laptops, but my other top options are the Dell Inspiron 7000 and Lenovo Yoga 6.

I have a Lenovo Flex 5 Chromebook which I like a lot, but I really need a new Windows machine. Since I like the Flex 5, I'm thinking the Yoga might be a good choice since it seems similar.

I'm looking for a minimum i5 (preferably 11th gen) processor or AMD equivalent, 256 gb SSD and I'd prefer 16 gb RAM although my current computers all have 8 gb and I don't have any issues.

I need something easy to take to meetings or traveling, so lightweight and thin is a top priority. I'd also really like touchscreen, but I don't have to have a full 2-in-1 design.

Open to other suggestions too, but I'd rather stay away from MacBooks.

Engineering student in need of a computer

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 12:16 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
700 USD but I'm flexible; USA
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
No, I would like to buy a new laptop
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Preferably 2-1 with a battery life of 8+ hours; I'd like something sturdy and well-built
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very, I would prefer it to be as light as possible as I'm going to carry it around all the time
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13+ inches, ideally 15
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm buying it mostly for engineering software that I can't run on my main MacBook. I also like to dabble in a lot of stuff, so it needs to be able to handle Blender, Fusion 360, Adobe, Vivado, music production software and video editing, too. I also plan to use it for light streaming, but nothing too crazy on that part
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/a
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality and touch screen are preferred. I am hoping to use it throughout all of my undergrad so something sturdy is a must, as it will get used and abused in my bag
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I was looking at Microsoft Surface as it seems to fit my needs but I'm unsure as to which one would be the best fit. I have also been eyeing Lenovo Yoga. I'm open to any suggestions though! Thank you in advance for your help!

Something I can play the Sims on... but that will also hold up long-term.

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 08:01 PM PST

Maybe a dumb reason to consider buying a new laptop, but I've pretty much always wanted to play the Sims but I have a Chromebook laptop that won't run the software. My current laptop has some issues (including a broken webcam, which has made Zoom classes exceedingly difficult) so this isn't purely Sims-motivated, haha.

I'm basically looking for the cheapest laptop that will run the Sims, but that will also hold up and be worth buying. So, nothing so cheap that it's trashy.

Also I have 0 knowledge of computer/tech lingo, so please define any non-basic computer words if you can. Thanks!

I'll be carrying it a lot so weight and thinned is quite important to me.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 or 15.6inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. casual gaming If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build quality, a place for optical disk drive

Decent keyboard would be nice, good build quality since it'll be visiting a shop environment place a lot.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was suggested a Lenovo workstation laptop for my needs. The P15s sounds decent also the P14s is quite nice too but the integrated graphics might be a problem for some CAD softwares and Mastercam.

Also the Dell precision but that seems over my budget.

The laptop will be visiting a shop environment often if that will help you guys find the right laptop.

Should I buy a laptop with dedicated graphics or integrated graphics for light to moderate gaming?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 02:54 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**$1000 -$1500
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**No
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**15" preferrably with a keyboard that has a 10-key built into it. Desired specs: 11th gen intel or ryzen 5 series, 16 GB of ram, 512 GB SSD.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**Not super important
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**15"
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Moderately taxing games like League of Legends, and retro/budget games (Darkest Dungeon, the recent Final Fantasy IV pixel remaster, stuff like that). Emulated games too but they aren't too taxing
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**See above. But I also want to somewhat future proof the computer so that I can play budget or moderate games for the next few years.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**No touch screen. 10-key keyboard
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**See below.

I'm in the market for a new laptop. My current laptop is the 5 years ago model of what is now called the Dell G series, basically it's a budget gaming laptop.

i5-6300 CPU, 8 GB of LPDDR3, 256 GB SSD, Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M discrete graphics card

What I'm looking for in my next laptop is 15" screen with a keyboard with a 10-key. Specs I want are 11th gen intel or ryzen 5 series, 16 GB of ram, 512 GB SSD.

So the default option would be to just buy the latest version of the laptop I currently have: The Dell G series. However, I was also thinking of getting an Inspiron laptop instead. The differences between these two are that the Inspiron doesn't have a discrete graphics card, and it's thinner and lighter. It's cheaper too.

The Inspiron has "Iris Xe Graphics with shared graphics memory" on the Intel version and "AMD Radeon graphics with shared graphics memory" on the Ryzen version. The Dell G series has NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 4GB or 3060 6GB.

I do some light to moderate gaming on my computer. MOBAs, retro games, budget games mostly. Nothing new or state of the art. I don't do heavy video editing either. But I want it to be somewhat future proofed so I can play light to moderate games for the next few years too. And I want it to be reasonably specced in case I do decide to do video or audio editing.

So would I be better served by going for the G series or the Inspiron? Basically if the discrete video card wouldn't be of much use, it seems like it's better to save the money and size/weight and go for the Insprion. How good or bad are integrated graphics in 2021?

A maxed-out Inspiron is about $1k and a maxed out G series is about $1.5k.

Or is there another company or model of laptop I should be looking at? I've been pretty happy with Dell so my instinct was just to get another Dell but if there's something else out there that would be suitable I'd be more than willing to consider it.

Edit: I edited my post and it ruined the formatting of the questionnaire, but you can ignore the questionnaire. Everything in the text below sums up my issue much better anyway.

    Looking for a budget 2-in-1!

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 09:28 PM PST

I'm in the market for a new windows 2-in-1 laptop. Perfect timing for black friday/cyber monday. Let me know what I should be watching for a deal!

What I will be using the laptop for - mainly just writing docs and viewing powerpoints. Will be used for a lot of netflix too

    Budget - 750-1000 CAD

MUST be "easily" upgradable (RAM, SSD)

    RAM - at least 8

SSD - more than or equal to 256

Processor - no preference, just want it to be usable in the next 5 years

    Display - must be good-decent

Pen - does not have to be top notch, I won't be doing any art, maybe some note-taking

    Gaming - minimal

Editing - just a little, no crazy 4k editing at all

Looks - I want it to be as sleek as possible for this price range

    Sound - don't care

Need Reliable Laptop for Grad School (STEM)

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 08:06 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $500-1000 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Solid performance and build quality are priority. Battery life is important but doesn't have to be super long.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Would prefer lighter but not at the cost of reliable build
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Standard 13 to 15 inch
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Various data offloading/processing and spatial programs used in science research (R, ArcGIS, Hoboware, etc)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Plenty of storage, reliable build quality, good speaker/sound system, a decent camera is preferred but not a priority
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm about to go to grad school soon (MS first, then hopefully PhD) and I need a new laptop since my current one is dying on me. I'm going into ecology/biology research so I'll need to store and process a fair amount of data. Other than that, the laptop will mainly be used for regular student functions (writing, web browsing, streaming videos, etc.).
I currently have a 15' HP with an i5 Intel Core, 12GB RAM, and 2TB hard drive. I thought the specs sounded good but I've had issues since day one for 3ish years now. I'd like to avoid issues like the disk running at 100% despite regular cleaning, quickly degrading battery life, and start up/performance being too slow.
I need a reliable laptop that will last me 4-5 yrs with plenty of storage and good processing power. Hoping to buy during black friday/cyber monday sales.

    Laptop for using Creative Cloud

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 07:59 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1,000-1,200 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-n-1 nice but not necessary as I also use a Wacom PTK-640 drawing tablet. Most important would be performance and then battery life. Currently using Windows, not opposed to Mac.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Meh

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14" and up

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Primary use is Adobe Creative Cloud: Photoshop, Illustrator, Fresco, sometimes Premiere pro and Audition. Also general student use which includes watching video assignments

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Be able to reliably run the above mentioned apps without bogging down

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Current laptop is on it's death bed, I'm trying to find a suitable replacement. I was under the impression that a gaming laptop would be a good choice due to dedicated/superior graphics cards but I'm lost as to which card would be better than which, I'm not super computer hardware literate. If indifferent, put N/A.N/a • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some gaming, and learning coding. • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?Nothing needs to run perfect but I'd like to play anything if that makes sense. • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope. • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.i just want a laptop that can last for many years and won't die

I've narrowed it down to these two laptops I think. The two seem very similar and I don't know how to compare the two. I'm open to other options also, I just want to know what to look for around Black Friday

Laptop for University student, £1000, UK

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 03:52 PM PST

Hi, I'm looking for a laptop that I can use for university. I often need to run multiple programmes (Microsoft Office programmes, Spotify etc) and have tons of tabs open at the same time. My last laptop couldn't handle this type of multitasking very well.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: £1000, UK. Could stretch to £1200 if it's really worth the extra money.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, battery life, build quality, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Needs to be light so that I can carry it around all day. Not so worried about thinness.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ideally 14", 13" is also okay.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Occasional graphic design tasks - Canva, Photoshop. Occasional gaming but nothing particularly intense - I don't think I need a gaming laptop.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Maybe things like Minecraft and LotRO. Not worried about settings/fps as long as they'll run. As I understand it, both of those should be okay with integrated graphics like Intel Iris Xe?
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really, proper USB ports would be great but I can live with USB C only if needed. Must have a HDMI port so I can connect to a 2nd screen, but I assume all laptops still have those. A colour accurate screen would be a bonus but isn't essential.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Really don't know what I should be looking for, so need all the help I can get! I'll insert a picture of my list so far, but honestly I'm just going by the prices on the Curry's website, and I don't know what's actually good. Would be great to hear your top choices, which can include models not on the list, and also any that you'd rule out!

Laptop comparison - prices in brackets are the regular prices for those that are currently on sale.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      16 inches and up

any kind of games, let's say Forza Horizon 4 with high quality and max fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Reliable build quality sounds good.
