In Linux, what would cause a 10Gbps connection to be able to send at 10Gbps but only receive at 2Gbps?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:54 PM PST

I ruled out local disks as the cause and did all my testing with RAM disks and 5, 10, 15, 20 gig files.

Using Mellanox X3 cards, latest firmware and drivers, DAC cable directly connecting them, Linux Mint 19.2 on both PCs. At first, I thought it was the hardware. I moved everything into Windows 10 boxes and using RAM drives, I maxed out the connection. Switching to SSDs, I maxed out the read/write of the drives on each side (500MB/s) both ways.

I moved the cards back into the Linux boxes and installed a fresh copy of Mint on one of the boxes and where as before, I wasn't able to send or receive beyond 2-3Gbps, now, I was able to receive at 500MB/s (max write speed of my SSD) but sending is stuck at around 2Gbps. This was even when writing to a RAM drive.

I guess a good test would be to just reinstall Mint on the other box but since that is a media server, that's a delicate task and I'm going to wait for Mint 19.3 (due in a couple of weeks) before going that route. But in the mean time, what are some things I could check? I've tried allllllllllllllllllllllllll sorts of sysctl -w tcp settings with no luck. MTU 9000/jumbo frames.....nothing helps.

Wi-Fi slow on desktop, works fine on laptop

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:34 PM PST

    Background:

    • Due to my renting arrangements, I get wi-fi from my landlord. So I don't have the possibility of a wired connection.

    • The installed connection has 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks. There is also a range extender for the 2.4Ghz network located between the AP and me.

Now, from both my laptop and my phone I detect all three networks (2.4Ghz, extended and 5Ghz). I get good speeds.

From my desktop the situation changes. Depending on which network I connect:

    • I don't even see the 5Ghz connection normally (I've seen it sometimes, but it's always really faint and I've never managed to establish a connection). Placing my laptop in the same place as my PC it gets the 5Ghz connection, with really good speed, even if the signal isn't amazing.

    • If I connect to the extender network, I get decent speeds (albeit still lower than on my phone/laptop). The problem is that the extender drops some packets, so this makes it a pain in the ass for gaming, since it causes some weird constant lagspikes. This also happens on my laptop.

    • If I connect to the main network, I get terrible speeds (<1Mbps, laptop is usually around 9Mbps for reference). If I try running a constant ping 1.1.1.1 command I see timeouts or really slow responses, over 1 or 2 sec sometimes.

This is the wifi card, it's brand new:

    https://www.amazon.es/gp/aw/d/B07LFBQ6CM/

Do I just get a new one? Could it be some misconfiguration problem somehow?

I have both Windows and Linux. I'm running most of the tests on Windows to discard possible driver/OS compatibility issues.

    Thanks.

The concept of VLANs for a novice

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:41 PM PST

Hey all.. I have always had a router with a plain setup: UPNP enabled and a handful of port forwards to some of the services that my Synology requires.

When I get my new router, I'm going to make this more secure with the help of VLANs; one for my computers, phones and NAS and one for the IoT devices.

I know that the IoT VLAN will have very restricted access back into my "main" VLAN, but what about in/out of the internet? Is everything just open to the IoT devices because I couldn't care less, or do I need to investigate which ports are needed both back into the main VLAN and also in/out of the internet? I'm picturing a pretty complex set of rules - or am I exaggerating?

Fanless switch thresholds – port count and POE

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:18 AM PST

Hi all – What's the upper limit for fanless 1GbE switches in 2019? I mean the highest port count and POE capacity (well, are there any fanless POE switches?)

I'm having a hard time knowing if certain switches are fanless. Like this UniFi 8-port switch with 150W POE says it's "quiet". Is it fanless? (Yes, it's vented, but I have no idea what that implies re: fans, and it doesn't have the circular obvious fan vents seen in larger Ubiquiti switches.)

    Thanks.

    Router with device schedules

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:52 PM PST

Looking for new router, one that can turn off specific devices on a schedule. Originally thought orbi looked good but I don't want to pay monthly for the circle thing that does this. Any suggestions?

I currently have the T-Mobile router (which is rebranded Asus) that doesnt have the full Asus software.

Help analyzing Pingplotter for game latency?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:06 PM PST

Hey guys. I've been experiencing big latency spikes lately in Rocket League, and I've downloaded Pingplotter and tried my best to see what is going on, but I think I need some help. The spikes are intermittent, and while I almost never drop completely out, it becomes horribly unplayable for a good 10 seconds sometimes, and it can happen every couple of minutes. From the pingplotter data I see so far it seems it's a ISP issue but I really am not sure?

I screenshotted from two different instances, let me know if you need any more data or something!

The server I used was what I could find from analyzing Resource Manager, I think Rocket League uses some Amazon servers.

Which RJ45 Networkcontroller for 10gbit/s Internet at home?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 09:06 AM PST

    Hello everyone

I am moving to a new appartment (Lucern / Switzerland) where 10Gbit/s Internet is availble and I would like to upgrade my Media Server (80TB Plex Media Server with UnRaid OS) with a 10Gbit/s RJ45 Networkcontroller.

Do I have to consider anything special? Someone told me following: (Translated from Swissgerman to English):
Make sure that the controller is compatible with the router. It could be that Intel implementation with aquantia is not compatible, and the controller would re-calculate the trafic, which would cause higer latency and heat.

This is the Router which I would get "for free" https://fiber.salt.ch/en/fiber/equipment/fiber-box
Could I basicly just buy one of these?: https://www.digitec.ch/en/s1/product/asus-xg-c100c-pci-e-x4-network-adapters-6421423?tagIds=76-525

    Thank you for your recommendations.

How to block roommate’s P2P activity on my home network

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:52 PM PST

Hello, my roommate uses peer to peer software to download huge torrent files, killing my bandwidth and also causing anxiety to me because I already received a warning email from my ISP reprimanding me for a device on my network illegally downloading a movie. I confronted my roommate and found out she didn't use a VPN, now she is using one. New issue now is that I can tell when my roommate is downloading torrents because my bandwidth goes down the toilet. I own my own Netgear router and modem, and am wondering if I can do something nifty with these options. Any insight is welcomed! I am not interested in kicking her off the internet here, I just want to make it a huge pain in the ass for her to do P2P Thanks!

Which 4G/LTE Device as Failover WAN for Edgerouter 4?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 03:44 PM PST

Hi, after some reading in this sub and several websites, I'll be going with the Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4 to support dual WANS as it fits my sub-$300 budget. The WAN failover setup can be done using the CLI which I believe I can handle.

Which device will you suggest to use for providing the 2nd WAN for failover if this failover WAN is to be a 4G/LTE cellular one? I'll likely be using Google Fi as my cellular service provider.

Router and Modem - Combo or Separate

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:28 PM PST

I'm getting 500mbps from RCN and want to get my own router / modem. I've read combos are terrible, but have had one and no issues really. If separating is better, i'd like to get separate, but cannot find an all around 'good' one.

I keep seeing SURFboard as the go-to, but not sure how i feel about it based on some reviews..

    Looking for suggestions!

    Thank you

Is there a way to limit devices to only us 2.4GHz wifi?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:22 PM PST

We don't have that good of internet connection at our places and when people come over and connect to our wifi they connect to the 5GHz but i have it connect to things like our tv, laptops and pc's, things that will use the 5GHz. Is there a way make devices only use 2.4GHz? Im using DumaOS if that makes any difference.

Blufferbloat when connected directly to modem?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:18 PM PST

I have 2 highly recommended docsis 3.1 modems that I purchased from recommendations from this subreddits popular posts. When connected straight from the modem to my PC on the first one , DLSR reports is showing 500+ bufferbloat. I switched out for the second one, and had the same results. Does this mean it is happening further upstream (the ISPs fault)?

    Slow Wifi [ASUS RT-AX92U using Wifi 6 (802.11ax) + Killer Wifi6 AX1650]

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:13 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm using the products in the title, (some more info here: https://www.asus.com/Networking/RT-AX92U/ & here: https://www.killernetworking.com/products/killer-ax1650/) I have the router set up with a 5gh-2 band on AX only. But I'm getting speeds around 300mbps down and up where as wired I have around 700-800mbps. I was under the understanding that this set up would push my wireless speeds up to around the same as my wired.

Am I wrong or am I missing something?

Network name changed and I’m not sure how it changed

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:38 PM PST

Hi! I currently have internet via cable, and it has been terribly slow recently. To try and speed things up, I tightened the cable cord a little bit into the back of my modem and also pressed the WPS button without knowing what it did. After the network restarted, it came up, but instead the front letter was capitalized after not being previously, and a dash was removed. Other than that, the name is the same. It's not a custom name, just a default name from the company. Anyone know why this happened and how I might fix it? Also the network required me to re-enter my password on all of my devices

    Home network setup help

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:18 PM PST

My current setup: all devices connect thru wifi to router. No devices connected thru ethernet.

I got an NVR(network video rec) which connects only thru ethernet, and 4 IP chinese cameras that connect wirelessly to the NVR (devices have to be on the same netwotk).

Problem: How do I isolate the NVR and Ip cameras network to the "regular" wifi network that my IoT use? 1) if I use a switch, the nvr will be isolated from rhe wifi IoT but will the wifi devices be "secured" in this setup? 2) Should I use a switch for nvr to connect to and maybe access points that support vlan for the wifi IoT?

In the end, using the cheapest home setup, i'm hoping my wifi devices will be secured from these china-branded ip cams. Thank you

How to disable router in Mg7550?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:52 PM PST

I have this router/modem combo from motorola and I'm having some issues connecting to a video game that I believe is caused by the router. I'd like to connect a different router to it and just use the modem. Is there a way to disable the router and use a separate one?

    Netgear A6100 not installing

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:17 PM PST

I wiped my PC and I freshly installed Windows 7.

I then installed the drivers for my motherboard and video card from the factory supplied disks.

Next I tried to plug in my Netgear A6100 Wi-Fi adapter. Windows detected it and it populated on the device manager, but there were o drivers available. I used my cell phone to download the most recent drivers from Netgears website and then connected my phone to my PC and uploaded the files. After installing the drivers, nothing changed. Windows still says there aren't any available drivers. I also repeated the process with the "Stand alone" software as well as the full software package available on their website. Nothing has worked.

This specific computer is ~120ft-140ft from the nearest hub. I don't have a good way to connect it through a wired connection.

As far as using a Wi-Fi hotspot with my cellphone, my cell service is very poor where I live. I have to rely on Wi-Fi for any data connection.

Has anyone had a similar experience with the Netgear A6100 that could offer some advice? I've been reading up on different things but I am lost. I used trial and error to attempt to fix the problem for several hours last night and I didn't gain any ground.

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168 doesn't play nice with new WiFi 6 router

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:09 PM PST

Upgraded to WiFi 6 with this TP-Link AX6000 router but now one of my PCs with an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168 can't get a WiFi connection unless one of two things happens.

    1. I turn off Smart Connect* on the router and connect the PC directly to the 2.4GHz band.
    2. I turn off 802.11n/ac Wireless Mode in network adapter properties.

Problem is that both of these options make the connection to this PC a lot slower than it should be. All my drivers are up to date and so is Windows.

*Smart Connect is a feature that broadcasts one SSID and automatically assigns devices that connect to it to either the 2.4GHz band or 5.0GHz band based on what it determines is better for said device.

Chromecast issues when using second router as an AP

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:56 AM PST

My Netgear X4S R7800 seems to be working better by itself. When I had a tp-link archer c3150v2 router and a tp-link Archer c2300 as an AP with identicle SSID for both 2.4 and 5ghz, I would often have missing devices and static (music dropping in and out of random speakers at different time) coming out when playing music in chromecast groups. I then switched to just my main router, and it still want 100% stable. Now running just the Netgear, it seems really smooth. Any tips or warnings for having an AP in the mix? I shut off DHCP in the AP and put it outside my dhcp range. Also had stability issues with iot WiFi switches until using just one router. (edited for clarity since I originally posted on my phone and didn't proof)

Is Ubiquiti AP AC lite ideal for my scenario?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:55 PM PST

So I have a basic need. Two storey home, not too big, basically need improved WiFi downstairs. I have a TP link wifi router in one of the rooms upstairs connected to the Pc and ethernet cabling running from this area down to the living downstairs. My questions are: 1. Can I connect a ubiquiti AP lite downstairs, AND keep my existing WiFi router active upstairs? Will this create issues with roaming? If I were to switch of the WiFi antennas, that would mean decreasing aseing WiFi upstairs this time. 2. I cant leave my PC with the controller on all the time, will this be an issue? Honestly this is a basic home setup and the only features other than improved WiFi I might use is maybe parental controls. I don't know enough to mess about with any other fancy settings.

I had thought about the TP link deco m5 but if I were to utilise the Ethernet, I think they'd have to work in AP mode, and if that's the case why not just buy a proper AP like the ubiquiti I thought instead of a mesh in AP mode

Animals chomping on Cat5e out in the yard...twice!

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:41 PM PST

So twice now, I have laid some Unshielded direct bury cat5e cable on the ground, terminated the ends and made it live at my house. I do intend to bury it eventually, but was just making it live for now.

It seems to have been chewed through twice. Once was perhaps within a day when the connection dropped. The 2nd time was last night when I made it live last evening.

We are going to get some sheathing or tubing to put it in this time around. :)

I'm just rather puzzled by it so I thought it would ask. :) Are we annoying the critters out there? Is there ways to get them to not pay attention to that stuff?
