Change user profile without breaking PC

Change user profile without breaking PC

so when i bought my computer it was a refurbished dell inspiron and they made the username user. I did the thing where you search the username and then click rename but the location for the user folder and anything that goes into it is still user. I tried doing the thing where you change the profile image path and that broke the registry. I did a restore but there is no way i can rename everything in the registry to my new name since it is literally user and there are many things user. So any ideas since I cant just clone everything to a new user.

Laptop Attempts to Go to Sleep While in Use

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 04:50 PM PST

A while ago my laptop kept going to sleep while I was using it. Sometimes it would do it multiple times in a row after I woke up my laptop. I went to the power and sleep settings and set it so that when I close the lid, my laptop does not go to sleep (now when I close the lid, the screen goes black but doesn't actually fall asleep). This kind of fixed the issue, except now my laptop screen flashes off and on when it tries to go to sleep, but can't. I guess my laptop keeps thinking I'm closing the lid. Does this mean there is something physically wrong with my laptop, or could it possibly be a software related thing? If it was hardware related wouldn't it happen more often? (I can go a whole day with it rarely happening)

Hi everyone, Since the 1909 update my internet wifi loses connection every few minutes even though I'm near the wifi modem. Saw some people in the feedback hub have the same error. Is there a temporary fix for this while waiting for an update?

Windows 7 factory settings reboot loop

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:17 PM PST

I just reset my Asus K53TA laptop (yes, I know it's an almost 10 year old computer but bear with me) to it's factory settings, but now, whenever I turn it on, as soon as it's done it immediately reboots, and when that is done it reboots again, in an infinite loop that I don't know if I can do anything with, and I'm worried that I'll be left without a computer and with a very expensive bludgeoning tool. Does anyone know what exactly happened and how to fix it?

Why is my transfer rate so slow between internal SATA3 SSD and external USB 3.0 SSD?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:02 AM PST

I can't seem to figure this out after a few hours of Googling and troubleshooting. I'm running Windows 10 on a machine that I built about 3 years ago primarily for photo editing and general office use (not gaming). It has an ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac board with an internal Samsung EVO 850 1TB SSD connected via SATA3 for my photo library. There's an i7 processor in there, but I don't remember which one. I'm upgrading to a Samsung 860 EVO 2TB SSD and copying the files over (about 100,000 of them) via USB by using a Sabrent USB 3.0 to SSD adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-2-5-Inch-Adapter-Optimized-EC-SSHD/dp/B011M8YACM/).

The adapter is directly plugged into a USB 3.0 port on my board. It's 100% a USB 3.0 port. When initiated the copy by just drag and drop in Windows 10, the process stabilizes around 20 MB/s (only 160 Mbit/s). The 850 and 860 EVO SSDs are supposed to read and write at around 500 MB/s (4000 Mbit/s). USB 3.0 is supposed to support around 625 MB/s (5000 Mbit/s). The Sabrent adapter is supposed to be capable of 5000 Mbit/s.

It's like I'm getting USB 2.0 speeds instead of 3.0 speeds. The obvious problem would be the adapter and the USB 3.0 connection. But here's the thing--when I run CrystalDiskMark on the externally connected 860 EVO, it reports back that's it does around 450 MB/s (3600+ Mbit/s) read and write, which is definitely in the USB 3.0 realm. That leads me to believe both the adapter and drive are fine and something about the copy process in Windows is the bottleneck.

I have other conventional external USB 3.0 HDDs that transfer much faster than the 860 EVO hooked up via the adapter. I've already deleted all the USB controllers and let Windows reinstall them. All the drivers are updated and report back as the best available. I'm at a loss for what to do next. The solutions in forum posts I've Googled haven't helped (or the OP has just disappeared without any resolution), so any advice would be appreciated.

Why is my laptop dimming automatically when I have my charger plugged in while playing PC games? (MacBook Pro 2017: bootcamp)

Trying to install windows xp on a nostalgic 2002 a7n8x build. Damn thing keeps trying to boot from hdd instead of the installation disk. Any help here would be hot.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:50 PM PST

As the title states, I'm trying to install a copy of xp pro on this machine I found. Just a mild passion project I would like to use (strictly offline) for retro gaming and running some old programs.

I've set the boot priority to boot from disk drive first. It still jumps right to the hdd, which of course won't boot, as it has no OS on it.

I've tried several boot priority configurations. The only way I can get the installation disk to run is by unplugging the harddrive completely. At that point everything goes swimminglyuntil I have to select a partition to install to. I've tried a few different hdds. The furthest I've gotten was trying to trick it into installing to a usb thumb drive. When I select the usb drive it says "Your computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free space you chose..." and so on.

If anyone has any guidance or tips on how I can install to any of these locations, please share your ideas.

    Suggestions for backup

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:45 AM PST

I'm going to help someone update their computer soon to Windows 10. I want to do a local backup before beginning so that if there's a problem I can just restore from backup.

If I were on a Mac, I'd use Time Machine, but that's not the case. What's the best backup option for this use case?

    TIA!

Line of green pixels across my screen

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:28 AM PST

    Over the last week or so, i have encountered a line of green pixels down my screen. I tried testing my hardware by using different ports and cables however i didn't find anything wrong. I just thought it was a problem with my monitor. However i now believe its a software issue as the line has moved across my screen by about 2 inches and where the line was is completely fine. There also has been points where the line disappears. Can anyone help? {thanks in advance}

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:11 PM PST

So I'm trying to reset my pc and for some reason I can't. When I click reset my pc it takes like 45 minutes to go through everything then the pc restarts and tells me no changes have been made. I then tried to update windows and the same thing happened, It installed the update for 10-15 minutes, restarted the pc and then said undoing changes. I've got roughly 2TB of used space on my drive and I don't want to manually delete everything i'm just trying to have the essentials

    Update SSD Firmware ??

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:34 AM PST

I have an ADATA SSD and i want to update the firmware, looked on official support page and i can't find a dedicated tool (SSD Toolbox isn't supported). After a while, i found a tool and when i tried the update it says that i can't update when the OS is installed on the SSD. Do i really need to install Windows on the external drive just to update my SSD ?
