If your PC suddenly shuts down or crashes and you don't know the reason, check windows event logs. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:08 PM PST ... or restarts Small story, I bought a new case on black friday but had to wait till yesterday to actually make the move to my new case (due lack of time). It's technically my second build then but with the same parts, it also means it takes double the time to build your pc as you have to disassemble everything out of your old case and build it again in the second case. I said "the same parts", but i actually did add one new part: the corsair commander pro, which replaced my lightning node pro. After all, everything went well. I took around 5 hours and the PC booted immediately on first try in my new case. This was last evening, all i did was set up the corsair commander pro. I didn't remove, install or reinstall anything. Today, something happened. I was just watching some youtube video and suddenly my screens went black and my PC restarted. I was like "huh, thats a first". Upon boot, i came on the desktop, some seconds later it happened again. This happened a few times while i kept trying to find the issue. The first thing i checked were my temps. I mean, I did struggle to install my AIO pump on my CPU cuz the AMD ... socket ... bracket ... install .. whatever is so annoying and well: CPU - 35°C, GPU: 45°C....... ehm nothing wrong here, nothing is overheating. After a while my PC restarted again .. sigh I did not have a bluescreen, which meant my windows didnt crash. So i thought, what does windows log say? Seriously, i've never did this before, it just came up in my mind. I opened it up and looked around. "Summery of administrative events" > critical event type > 4 errors from the "kernel-power" - yeah that does sound critical right? I checked one entry of them and lord behold
You don't say. Although this does confirm it wasnt a crash, i had to dig deeper. Back to the summary of administrative events we go. I only checked the entries with errors from the last hour, most of them had 0 but another entry had 11 errors, from the event type "error" and source "Service Control manager". I clicked on one of the entries and tada! I found a possible cause:
I compared the timestamps when it was logged. The difference between those 2 entries are 10 seconds. So Corsairs service must have to do with it right? Well ... i wanted to prove myself and disabled the service. Yes, the cause was the service. It's been 4 hours without a sudden PC restart. I guess iCue didnt like that i changed devices so suddenly. So lesson learned. (Meanwhile I still didnt enable the service back, dunno if its really needed or if there's a fix) [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:54 AM PST I wanted to share my success with this supportive sub. I successfully built and finished setting up my first pc build as a present to myself after a hard but productive year. I've wanted to build a pc for years and am excited that I was finally able to follow through. Between last year's and this year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, I went bigger than I planned to, but I regret nothing. The building, troubleshooting, and setup took all weekend, but I succeeded. Everything operates correctly and runs beautifully. I wanted to thank this community because of all the useful information on this sub. I made a lot of decisions based on suggestions and conversations I read right here. Even without asking any direct questions, this sub was a fabulous resource. Thank you. I don't have a full battle station set up yet, but the link below is a pic of the final product. Posted: 08 Dec 2019 07:35 PM PST Quite literally, insects in my new build!! Australian summer is setting in and I've discovered that bugs are attracted to the LEDS in my PC (first summer with new PC)!!! I can see the little bastards through the tempered glass!! Haha I have dust filters but there are still plenty of places they can crawl inside and they are tiny. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a problem or am I just being dramatic over my prized new toy? I really don't like the idea of fumigating it!! Hahaha should I install a big zapper Infront of the intake fan perhaps..? I'm just waiting for it... Gaming away then a big blow fly comes bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz thooomp! Splat!!! Flies straight into an intake and guts sprayed all over my motherboard... Hahaha [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 Dec 2019 06:16 AM PST Hey PC Friends, For the last 3 weeks i've been watching over this subreddit, and needless to say I'm still baffled by most of the things that you have to say. I never realised how difficult it actually is to build a PC - and you can't just put things together like legos. There's a lot to consider! I thought it'd be nice to humour you guys with my current setup. Im 19, living at university, using a 2015 macbook pro. I love playing online social games. My favourite is VRChat and obviously I have to use desktop mode. Now you may be wondering how I can even run such titles on such an old laptop... well - I use windows on my macbook, then stream via nvidia GeForce Now. Since my laptop screen is damaged - I then route a HDMI cable from my laptop into an old HP monitor. Ontop of this macbook's don't have an Ethernet adaptor port so I have to use a converter USB. That leaves me with 1 USB port remaning and I need 2 to support a mouse and keyboard. So finally I have a USB extender connecting my wireless mouse and keyboard. Yes... it's been a struggle for me - but as you can see i'm quite resourceful! Now I have £2000 saved up and im ready to build a PC! I can't wait to get involved with the community! Christmas present for best friend, need advice. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 03:14 PM PST Hey guys, how are you today? I am currently trying to build a computer for my best friend of 7 years who has voiced that he wants to get into the pc world but feels it's far too expensive and doesn't really know where to start. I told him I would help him out with choosing a good computer to buy but in reality I'm going to surprise him with a computer for his birthday/christmas (His birthday is the 24th, sucks for him lol) I am wanting to keep the build under $500, without periphreals as I already have extra periphreals to give him. I have achieved this so far, however I am wanting a second opinion as I'm not sure if I am spending too much money in one place or another for a budget build. I want him to be able to realistically push 50-60fps on medium settings on recent AAA games at 1080p without too much fiddling with settings and I think I have a build that will be able to do the pretty easily, but again would love a second opinion. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for providing your opinion if you do <3 Tl:dr Want to build computer for under $500 for my best friend, 50-60fps on recent games at low-medium settings 1080p any advice appreciated

A short story of how I wasted my entire weekend Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:35 AM PST TLDR below the build. Grab some popcorn, because it's gonna be a long ride. Everything began about 2-3 weeks ago when I ordered the components for my new PC build. I waited for what seemed like a whole eternity to finally be able to ascend my gaming experience. I got a Ryzen 5 3600, paired with AsRock Steel Legend B450 and Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 2x8 @ 3200 MHz (full build at the bottom). I know that the GTX 1060 is not that good, but that's the only thing from my last build I will reuse for now, exept the Samsung 860 EVO, that has a gaming impact. I need to save a bit for a 2070S-2080S (that's why is the 750W PSU, duh). I don't mind waiting 1-2 months for that to happen. Anyway, everything was delivered by this Friday. After work I went home and the fun began. I was prepared for a whole gaming weekend (oh you sweet summer child). I had a lot of fun building it. Everything went smoothly and the PC booted from the first time. I installed Windows 10 and I began to configure my PC. Everything seemed fine, except my RAM, that was running at 2133 MHz by default. Without hesitation I went to BIOS and I enabled XMP profile (this is where everything started going to shit). So here am I, installing some games to finally play on my new gaming PC. I was on my phone when with the edge of my peripheral eyesight I saw IT. It was one of those things that every PC user feared, one of those moments I knew I was screwed, the BIG OOF, the Endgame.............. a blue screen of death. I panicked big time. The PC restarted itself without much trouble. Then I started to get some really weird errors all over the place. The event log in Windows was cursing my entire family in a forbidden language. Critical errors everywhere. Task manager won't open. Graphics driver can't update. BSOD every 20-30 minutes with different errors each. Can't even install a fucking benchmark program. "Now what" I thought. I reinstalled Windows. What I did seems the most logical thing, right? WRONG! If you read carefully you already know what's going on. But for me it was like the mist from Silent Hill. I had a long working week, okay? I was really tired. It was already past midnight, so I went to bed with the mindset to troubleshoot in the morning. So, I woke up and began to search in google what may causes the issues I'm getting. Outdated drivers seemed like the best bet. I wasted my entire Saturday doing everything I could think of. Updating drivers/reinstalling them, reseting/reinstalling Windows, monitoring my PC with various programs. My head exploded. Nothing seemed to fix the BSODs. But then, like some kind of an enlightenment, I knew what was going on. Once again I got another BSOD. At this point I was so used to it, that I almost missed the most important detail - the error itself saying "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT". It hit me out of the blue (see what I did here?)- everything began after I enabled the fucking XMP profile. This is when my best friend called and asked me if I'm free to go out and do some shit. I just had my lunch and I was so tired of this PC bullshit, so I went out. When I got back home way past midnight, without even thinking of the PC problem, I went to bed. I woke up in a lovely Sunday morning and I began the troubleshooting. The first thing I did was to disable XMP. No errors. No nothing. No shit. Everything was smooth as fuck. "Weird" I thought. I went back to BIOS and I set the DRAM frequency, timings and voltage manually, without enabling XMP. 3200 MHz, 16-18-18-18-36 and 1.350V. Everything was even more smoother than before. My CPU was feeding with the memory speed like a gorilla on ecstasy. The benchmarks were phenomenal. I tested my RAM with MemTest64. 0 errors. NICE. Went back to BIOS to enable XMP with the same settings. 231 errors. Not nice at all. Back to the BIOS. I thought that my RAM starves, so without disabling XMP I pumped up the voltages to 1.400. 5-10 errors. I went back, disabled XMP, set the default values (3200 MHz, 16-18-18-18-36 and 1.350V) manually and ran the MemTest64 for 2 hours. 0 FUCKING ERRORS. This also tested my CPU, which was nice. The Ryzen 3600 was above 4.0GHz all that time and below 80°C. Everything was now fixed. Everything worked smooth as fuck. IT WAS DONE. But so was my fucking "gaming" weekend. BTW, here is my build ATM (soon to replace the 1060 with 2070S/2080S): PCPartPicker Part List
TLDR: After I enabled XMP my whole system fucked up. Turns out XMP makes my RAM unstable and I got constant BSODs. I fixed it by setting the values, like XMP does, manually. Can someone please tell me why the fuck XMP makes your RAM so unstable? And why if I set manually the values, the same like XMP does, I get no errors at all? Cheers! Can I start my build without all the parts? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 03:38 PM PST Title seems pretty self-explanatory, but i'm just wondering if anyone would advise against it. I just got my case in the mail today and I'm itching to start. Psu coming later this week, and graphics card coming early next week. I have all of the other components. Video card covering SATA ports, what can I do? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:17 PM PST So I just upgraded to a ryzen 3600 and a Gygabyte B450m DS3H mobo. I installed everything and its working correctly as of now, but I have one big problem. My video card, an Xtreme Gtx 1060 6gb is blocking 3 out of 4 sata ports. I only managed to connect my main 120GB SSD to the last sata port which is very, very tight with the video card. What are my options? Change video card? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 02:48 PM PST But first, one more double check here to make sure I didn't make any huge mistakes. This will be my first build, and I would like it to play games at 1080p, 60 fps. I'd like to use a micro atx board to keep the build smaller. I don't have access to a microcenter and my budget is < $700. Posted: 09 Dec 2019 12:59 PM PST so i did know beforehand that the x470f's bios does not support 3rd gens by default, though i have seen an official asus article stating that thay updated a few motherboards, including the x470f. so i thought it would be fine... well, of course, now when i want to boot up all the lights go on, GPU and fans all running, the onboard LEDs tell be there's a problem with my DRAM. i tried the common RAM troubleshooting, slotting single and dual sticks into every possible combination. didnt work so far... my qustion is: my brother has a 5 1600x, that should be compatible and boot up for a bios update, or is the DRAM problem somewhere else? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 05:27 AM PST Im only going to br playing comp games, i prefer AAA games on my console. And plus everything is about 50$ more because where i live almost everyone buys prebuilts so the few shops that exists take advantage. As for the rx 5500, i would have to wait about 2 months and would have to pay about 200$ for the cheapest versions and the 1650 super costs 205$. So is the rx 580 worth it for 170$? Why do people recommend overbuilding your power supply so immensely? Posted: 08 Dec 2019 11:52 PM PST For instance one of the top articles on this sub specifically recommends at least a 650w as a bare minimum, and that everyone should at least consider a 1200w. What. 650w is more than enough for even the higher end pcs. Most people in the mid range would be over building by 300 watts. It being as utilized as it should being out of the realm of possibility for most of us. Entirely unnecessary. You work hard for your money. Spend it where it actually matters. Now some overbuilding is necessary. You have your eye on a future cpu, gfx card, maybe a cpu cooler. You'll want to pick a power supply for what your computer is actually going to be. On top of that your power supplies max output is effected by temperature. It changes by less than 100 watts so I recommend a power supply that is 100 watts over built to the computer you have envisioned. A 400-450w power supply meets this criteria for most mid range builds. If your envisioned pc uses 297w get a 400w power supply. Want to leave some room for unforeseen upgrades (that you're going to actually get) Add another 50. My point is overbuilding by 100-150 watts is necessary. Overbuilding by any more than that is unnecessary and just an excuse to burn the money you worked for. 1200w power supplies may have a place in absolute monster, larger than life, pedal to the metal computers but not for 99 percent of the computers that most of us are actually building. Companies want you to spend as much money as possible by influencing you and others to buy things you don't need. They don't mind financing our favorite YouTubers if they make a 20 second plug recommending something you don't need. Reddit isn't impervious to marketing biased opinions either. A lot of people even regurgitate what companies want you to believe. Think twice before dropping 200 dollars on a power supply there are better investment opportunities for that money. Pc sleep issues? Ryzen 5 3600x 5700xt Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:49 AM PST Hello everybody, I just finished building my rig yesterday. Everything seems to be going okay with the exception that when my PC goes to sleep it wont turn back on unless I completely power it off and power back on. I've tried tinkering with the display settings to never turn the display off but its done no good. What's the next place to start looking? Sorry, not very good with this stuff so any help I can get would be great. Also, something unrelated. Whenever my PC boots up and I'm on the desktop, my mouse movements have extreme stutter until I open up a chrome page than it stops. Could this be faulty ram or something else. Thanks. I just got a second moniter and it doesn't work. Any ideas on what to do? Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:41 PM PST My parts are: ASRock B360 Pro4 ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6gb Intel i5-8600K I built my PC a little while ago, and recently decided to get a second monitor to keep discord open on and stuff. My parents had three old monitors with DVI and VGA ports on them, so I got one of those to save money. My GPU doesn't have a VGA port so I plugged it into the DVI port it has. (My main monitor is plugged into my GPU's display port if that's helpful.) The old monitor isn't detected while in windows, but when booting my PC the boot information and BIOS show up on the old monitor. I have tried restarting my PC. When I do, it boots on the second monitor but when windows actually starts up it goes back to my main monitor. I have also tried going into my display settings and clicking on detect under multiple displays, but it just says "Didn't detect another display." The last thing I have tried doing is going into the project settings and changing it to extend. That didn't do anything, and it seems like it resets to PC screen only whenever I click out of the project settings. [link] [comments]
