RTX 3060ti desktop (Dell XPS 8940) or M1 Pro MacBook Pro ($1999 model)?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:45 PM PDT

    Which one is better?
Some things I can think of right now (+ is positive, - is negative, > is neutral):
RTX 3060ti desktop (CPU is i7-11700):
    + Better GPU
    + More app compatibility
+ My current peripherals are compatible with Windows
+ Can run x86 and x64 apps natively without the need for a compatibility layer
    + USB-A ports
    - Worse OS (personal preference)
    - Manufacturer bloatware
    - Worse CPU
    - Bad cooling system
    MacBook Pro:
    + Better OS (personal preference)
    + No bloatware
    + Better CPU
    + Portable
    + Better cooling system
    > Could theoretically run Windows apps but only through a VM so there is a performance penalty, but it means it could run apps of the two main OSes (other than Linux, but there doesn't really seem to be apps that are Linux-only to my knowledge)
    - Worse GPU (I am not sure how much worse it is)
    - Less app compatibility (but better creative apps)
    - My current peripherals are not really meant to work with macOS
    - At least there is an HDMI and SD card port now, but it still lacks USB-A (so a dongle may be needed)

Where is Windows Photo Viewer located?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:07 PM PDT

Just had to create a new account on my work PC. Now, when I access different image types, I'm noticing:

    • .jpg defaults to Windows 10's "Photos" app.
    • .png is asking me what app I want to use.
    • .tif defaults to Windows 7's legacy "Windows Photo Viewer" app.

That last point is interesting to me. When I cycle through the list of available apps to open a png, "Windows Photo Viewer" isn't an available option. I assume the .exe isn't available by default and I have to navigate to it? I'd like to do that- if anybody can tell me where it's usually located.

    Screenshot Issues

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:26 PM PDT

First, the actual bug: after a certain amount of use, the PrtSc button near the top right of the keyboard ceases to have any effect whatsoever. This is related to its usage, since it bugs out after I've been using it for a certain amount of time, this has eventually occurred on every computer I've had, not to mention that restarting the computer nor uninstalling related apps has any effect. I highly doubt this issue is exclusive to me, as it has come up with all of the different models of computer I've made use of.

Next, lets talk about the Snip-and-Sketch app. It's perfectly functional for its intended purpose (when it functions; see paragraph 1), but as a screenshot function it has a glaring flaw. In case you need to catch an image of what's on your screen quickly, you would need a button or hotkey to use, which was the PrtSc button's original functionality. Being required to hit that button, use the app to crop the selected amount of screen that you want to record, and then select exactly how to save/what to do with it highly limits its usability, since you can't make records of things spontaneously, not to mention certain things that you might need to take an image of are set to close if you actually interact with another app (dropdown menus, for instance). In other situations it will save as many steps as it adds, since the image can already be cropped, but it isn't always necessary.

The way for this to be set up optimally is so simple it's frustrating that it hasn't been changed already. Just make it that when the PrtSc button is tapped, it instantly takes a image of the whole screen and saves it to a screenshots folder in your pictures files, the way it was in an older version. If the button is held, it would open Snip-and-Sketch the way it's made to now, to edit the images normally. Then all that's needed would be a resolution to the bug mentioned in the first paragraph.

What will you use "Windows Subsystem for Android" for? What Android apps (non-game) you want to use on Windows?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:11 AM PDT

Earlier this week I tried the WSA on my Win11 laptop. It was cool to see that I can run Android apps on Windows. But once the novelty wore off, I couldn't figure out what to use it for. So, am wondering what other people will be using it for. Except for Android exclusive games.

    Windows 11 arm full release?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 10:27 AM PDT

So I am currently running the ARM insider preview for Windows 11 in a Virtual machine on an M1 Mac and quickly noticed something; only the insider preview is available to download and not a full publicly available version. I know that windows 10 was only in insider preview as well unless you bought a surface device. Do you all think that it will be ever available as a. full release for people wanting to use it in a virtual machine or will it always be an insider preview?

    Regarding the New MS store

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 10:20 AM PDT

Today I installed VLC throught the new store, and the first that iot make is to trigger an UAC prompt like when you install an app that you have downloaded from the web. After the installation is finished, it added a direct access in the desktop without asking permission.

Isnt exactly the experience that I'm expect installing apps form the store. If each time that one of the apps is auto-updated I'm to be nagged with an UAC prompt and I need to erase direct access created without permission, well, I think that MS need to change the conditions of the new store to make the install/update more transparent for the user, and definitively, not allow that the installers can create direct access links in the desktop.

Can you convert windows laptops from Chinese to English?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:49 AM PDT

I am trying to buy a laptop and the seller has informed me that the entire windows 10 for the laptop is in chinese (they must have bought it in china), and that it is possible to convert the laptop to english by buying a license for windows 10 pro and selecting english as the language for that license registration. does anyone know if this is correct? by doing this, will this ensure that EVERYTHING from the laptop will be in english (essentially the same thing as if I bought the same laptop from any english speaking country)? thanks all
