Pointers for NAS (Nvidia Shield setup) Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:32 PM PDT Hello, I'd like some advices for my futur expenses! I'm looking into buying a NAS for storage purpose first (the main purpose is the "database" of a media center basically). I currently have a setup with nvidia shield with multiple sources (HDDs, EDDs,...) which is not really practical and I'm running out of space. My needs are: - lots of potential storage space (I'm thinking 4 baies, even if at first 2 of them will be empty) Do you have any advice? Which NAS should I look for? Any general advice? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:11 PM PDT Hi I'm looking to replace the eero router my isp provides because i don't want to pay $10 a month and been having some connectivity issues that come and go. What router should i get for a 4200 sq ft two story house. 6 people with probably 20-30 devices. $200-$300 budget [link] [comments] |
Why is the 5Ghz channel of my Wifi 6 Mesh system capped at 867mbps? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:21 AM PDT Hello, I recently moved into a new place and had 1gig fibre internet installed. The modem/router provided by the ISP is located in the electronics closet on the 2nd floor, and all the ethernet cables through the home stem from there. The speeds through the wall are obviously great, but the wifi coverage was hit and miss on the 1st and 3rd floor, dropping to 150-200mbps in some areas. A friend of mine offered me a good deal on the Asus Zenwifi AX6600, so I bought them and installed them, using the ethernet in the house as a wired backhaul, allowing me to use the wireless backhaul as a 2nd 5ghz network. Both 5Ghz networks give me about 500mbps around the house, which is a great improvement. My question is that the non-backhaul channel, I'll call it 5G, is shown as capped at 867mbps in the Wifi-Explorer app. Meanwhile, the backhaul channel, I'll call it 5G2, is shown capped at the expected 1733mbps. I'm just wondering why the difference? Since I have the ethernet running through the house, would I be better off setting up the mesh routers as access points with the same SSID, but locked to specific channels? Based on Wifi-Explorer, it seems my neighbor (also on fibre) is doing that, and all of his 4 networks (all with the same name) are capped at 1733mbps. Thank you [link] [comments] |
A strange case of internet problems Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:20 PM PDT Something strange is happening. Some sites temporarily stop loading normally but work good when I use a VPN. Examples of sites: reddit, deepl, bing. Also, Telegram doesn't work. It often starts like this: I go to Reddit, the first post loads, at which point loading freezes (for 5 min for example). Google works fine. Twitch works fine. YouTube works fine but loads a little bit slower when you just open it. Change of browser has no effect, change of device has no effect, change of router has no effect. I thought it was a problem with my ISP. Changed the ISP, but the problem remains. Sounds like some kind of nonsense. What could it be? I'm not tech savvy and internet savvy but I'm starting to think that it's either something with CDN miss-location or something (but why not fixed for months? surely others would have noticed it too) or it's something done by government traffic analyzers (I live in Republic of Tatarstan, it's part of the RF). How can I check exactly what the problem is? Thanks for the answer. [link] [comments] |
Home Building Networking tips needed Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:32 AM PDT I'm having my house built and the walls will be up in the first floor by next week. Its a concrete home so there's not much room for adjustments and I would really want to get it right and have a good available wired network connection all over the house. I will be getting a fiber optic cable connection from our ISP, and target to have one LAN port at each floor connected by CAT7 cables, I'm thinking just having them on one side of the house going up to the roof deck would be easiest (3 floors + roof deck) . Any tips on how I can do this safely and futureproof it as well? Any help will be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Some Trouble with NixOS Home Router Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:08 PM PDT Recently, I installed a raspberry pi 4 to use as my home router using the openwrt firmware. That worked excellently. However, I'm also in the mood to tinker so I decided to install a linux distro (nixos) on my raspberry pi so that I can configure the entire network (firewall, nat, etc) from scratch. It is more hassle this way but it's a good opportuntiy to learn so I figured why not? Long story short, I configured nixos to operate as my home router and while 99% of websites work, 3 internet services started to bug out: 1) Google Cloud Platform started timing out, 2) League of Legends Launcher would refuse to connect and 3) mapgenie.io would refuse to load a map. After swapping to an openwrt router, all 3 services worked so I know there is something wrong with my nixos config. Before I start debugging this on my own, could I ask if some linux/network pro could look at my config to double check I didn't missing something obvious? It's mostly the nftables config that I'm unsure about. Here is the networking config: And here is the rest of the config which is not really relevant but I figured I'd post for completion: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:04 PM PDT I've recently purchased a house, and don't intend on moving for a long time, so I'm wanting to get the networking done well early on. Tech wise, I'm an experienced embedded software developer, with a few network programming chops, run a linux as my primary machine, but never really thought too much about designing networks. What I have at the moment is a VDSL internet connection (hoping it might turn into fiber one year) and the ISP supplied modem/router. I have disabled the wifi on that, and am using a ubiquiti AP-AC-PRO (controller is running on my server that is always running). I am getting an electrician to run cables through the house, but I haven't figured out the best way to do this. I have a 16 port managed switch (ubiquiti USW-Lite-16-PoE) which I am planning to use for powering the AP. My rough plan is to run at least two cables to each room that needs them (my office probably wants more). I am considering getting a UDM, and putting the ISP router into bridge mode, so then I would have 2 access points. I can imagine also getting one for outside (where I have an entertaining area with a TV). Obviously, without measuring, no one really knows how many APs is enough, but based on my measurements, I can cover the whole house with connectivity with just the AC-PRO, but the speeds aren't great far away from it. I could also hold off on the UDM, and wait for the UDR... I'm not particularly attached to ubiquiti, but so far I have found their stuff to work well. I'm going to run CAT6 everywhere - I can't imagine needing any super long cable runs, so it doesn't seem like 6E provides any benefit. Does anything in here stand out as being silly, or any advice on how to choose the location for the switch (current hope is under the stairs - but will chat to electrician first to see how annoying cabling will be). Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:03 PM PDT (Reposted, still having the same issue) For the past 3 weeks, my internet has been going haywire whenever I load up any video game on my PC. I would usually get 230-240 Mbps down and 5-6 up through a hard-wired Xfinity connection, directly into the modem; haven't really had any serious issues up until the other week. I even upgraded my internet to 600 Mbps down, 20 up (no difference). When loading up any game (let alone actually playing it) that is online-based, it becomes unplayable/extremely laggy. My download speeds falter down to an uneven 3-10 Mbps and upload speeds are practically nonexistent. The weirdest part about all of this is that the internet speeds only reflect on the device running the game itself. I had my friend run a speed test on his laptop whilst I was running the game, and his results came back completely normal. Did the same with my phone. I also tested running a game and speed testing on a laptop, which showed the same results as my PC (only the device running the games had a severe decrease in internet speeds and in-game lag). Hard-wired or on wifi, the same results kept coming in. I have tested this while directly connected to the modem (the only device on the network), through wifi, and connected to the router. This is not an issue of QOS or lack thereof; 3 techs have come out and tested the COAX cable connection, which was completely nominal. When connected to the game, my bufferbloat jumps up and down, from 0 all the way to 500 then back down to 0. I have reset/replaced the router and modem, and reset everything. I am losing my mind. Could this be some weird ISP issue? Thank you. [link] [comments] |
My internet provider gives me an internal IP, what is this type of connection called? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 10:17 AM PDT I'm a newbie in networking, so I gonna try my best to explain: My internet provider gives me an IP that is not accessible externally, when I see what my IP is on some website it gives me the IP of the provider, not mine. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:18 PM PDT Hi all, I just moved into a new apartment recently and got xfinity gigabit with the xfi-gateway. I play video games on my Xbox quite a bit and have my set up in my bedroom. Currently the modem is setup in the living room (by coax connection)which gives good WiFi connectivity throughout the 3 bedroom apartment, however as most know WiFi doesn't give the full extent of the speeds. I discovered a switch panel in the closet in the master bedroom that is labeled for each room, the living room and also the unit number. My the closet doesn't have a coax connection in it. My main question is will the cat5 connection with the apartment number supply the internet? TIA for any help or insight I'm sure this is a common question for the subreddit. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:13 PM PDT Just moved into a new apartment, I've spent some time trying to identify what kind of outlet this is. Would I ever be able to hook my laptop up through this outlet or am I going to have to do WiFi only? There's no coax in my room either, sadly. Pictures: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:53 PM PDT Hi guys so i'm paying for gigabit internet with at&t fiber and i have a somewhat advanced setup in place for my network (if need be i can go into detail) and normally nothing is slowing it down but i got home from work today excited to play the new season of apex but it was downloading super slow so i kept pausing and resuming the download to try and keep my speeds faster because it was going between 5 and 25 mb/s and apparently that corrupted the download so i deleted it and figured it would be faster to just redownload the whole game than wait for the files to fix themselves so i did that and i was only getting 10mb/s when i should be getting somewhere in the high 80s-90s so i paused it and did a speed test and it was only at 100mbps when i normally get ~900mbps. i haven't changed anything in my network(hardware or software). anyone know a way to diagnose what's going on? edit: after restarting everything in between my computer and the internet(switch, router, local dns/dhcp server, modem) the speeds went back to normal. this happens once or twice a month so i'm still looking for a way to diagnose this [link] [comments] |
Need help with UPnP and NAT type on router Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:45 PM PDT So basically I have my Xbox is connected to my router, I enabled UPnP on my router so my Xbox can benefit with an open connection to the router. But the problem is that my Xbox keeps reporting that it detects 2 NAT types on the router which is preventing it from having an open connected I tried to look up for information and solutions online like setting up my router as an access point but I'm unable to do so since that option is not available. I have a huawei b315s-22 that has both a WiFi and LAN connections and it connects to my ISP via a SIM card in it, doesn't have any kind of Ethernet cable or anything. Only the electricity and a LAN cable going out of it into my Xbox Any help figuring out how this works and why there's 2 NAT types detected and how to possibly disable one of them would be appreciated. I don't know much about how any of this works [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:41 PM PDT Does anyone know why 711GE ont calix box isn't getting power? We've tried breakers unplugging and resetting the ont and nothing works. The only light lit up on the box outside is the "power" led and it is orange. Is this a issue on our end or a connectivity issue? [link] [comments] |
30AWG flat cable for POE+ Access Point? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:53 PM PDT Simple question, should I be afraid of burning my house down using a 5ft 30AWG flat Cat6 cable (from monoprice) to power a POE+ AP (TP-Link EAP610)? Just trying to save some space slipping it through a cabinet door is all. Fwiw, the ac adapter for the AP says its 12v 1a, so I'd guess it doesn't even get close to pulling the full 30w through POE+. Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:44 PM PDT Hello, my daughter is in high school and has an iPhone. She is running into issues trying to login to a website on school property (Spencers website). I explained firewalls and blocked websites and why she should never put her phone on the schools wifi. She said she wasn't on wifi. I figured she was logged in and didn't realize it so told her to try again and make sure she was not on wifi. She did and sent me screenshots and is still getting the "this site is blocked due to content filtering" message. She also sent a screenshot showing wifi was off. My networking knowledge doesn't go beyond an intro class in college so I jumped on Google and I'm not really liking the conspiracy theories I'm reading so I popped in here to ask the experts. She said she has been very careful not to use the schools wifi, this is a phone and service I pay for and obviously did not set any kind of parental controls. She can access the website at home, just not on school property. I'm just wondering why this is happening and I'm not overly thrilled that a high school is monitoring my daughter's cell phone usage so I would like to know how to avoid it in the future. Huge thank you to whomever can throw some advice my way. [link] [comments] |
Possible to get rid of ISP's ONT? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:41 AM PDT We have Fiber to the home internet and the ISP (Valley FiberCom) has installed a Calix GigaHub 812G-1 ONT. I was able to get them to put the ONT into "bridge" mode allowing us to bypass their Calix GigaSpire Router and use our UDM Pro. We only have internet through them, no IPTV or phone. They use PON and the UDM Pro authenticates to the network with PPPoE with the WAN ethernet port plugged into the ONT. My question is would it be possible to purchase the Unifi GPON SFP or a different GPON SFP and connect the fiber directly to the UDM pro and bypass the ONT all together? Contacting L1 Support for the ISP is proving to be no help. Pictures of the ONT: https://imgur.com/a/Gm2KvNo [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:32 PM PDT Security camera occasionally goes offline and announces its lost the internet. This only lasts for a few seconds and then it comes back sometimes offline only one or two seconds. I'm wondering if there is a way to find out if the problem is a motive or the router or my provider. Computer is on a good 18 hours a day 7 days a week. So I bought a new router didn't help. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Phone extension cable (carrying vdsl signal) next to cat5 (carrying gigabit ethernet) Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:33 PM PDT Due to a decorating snafu, my phone extension cable that goes to my vdsl modem that's buried in my wall is no longer viable ( was too short, no slack available, and a when I took it off to decorate, I broke one of the conductors!) The option I have thought of to minimise making more holes in my house involves running a new phone cable alongside existing cat5 for around 10m. Will this give me any crosstalk issues? Hopefully not, since they are both twisted pair, but thought I'd ask before I invest any time in trying to pull cable through the existing route. Captain Google mainly talks about ethernet or phone alongside power cables, not each other Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
ISP Router (Verizon Fios G1100/Arris nvg468mq) Verizon Fios Verses Asus AC3100/RT-AC88U Posted: 02 Nov 2021 03:20 PM PDT Hello, would me buying an Asus AC 3100 ($50) be better than my ISP provider router(s) G1100 or nvg468mq? My ISP provided routers get me like 275-350 down, depending on the speedtest site I use, for my 500/500 connection. Ethernet gives me the full 500 connection just fine. The documentation for my ISP routers ain't that great but here they are: G1100 2014, Actiontec Arris nvg468mq 2016, Arris RT-AC88U 2015, Asus Would my speeds or latency be better? Security/firmware updates? Or maybe the range? Is it even worth it? The area is 2 stories with concrete walls I think. Would spending the $50 net me any noticeable benefits? Or should I even spend $100 for a newer AC86U 2017? I also plan on using merlin if that means anything. And if I should buy it, then are there any specific settings I should turn on/off? Thank you. Both MAC's are set up as static in pfSense under their own DHCP server-->DHCP Static Mappings. Personal is at 192.168.20.10, work is at 192.168.30.10. i want to make sure they get the correct IP when i swap them. current issue: Created a port profile in Unifi as vlan 20+vlan 30 and assigned the port profile to port 15 where i connect the laptop. the setup did not get me the desired ip address as the static ones in pfsense. i tried use differnt Native Network(tried None, vlan 20, vlan 30) for the vlan20+vlan 30 profile in Unifi but none of them get where i want. Not sure where i shall tweak to get to the goal. [link] [comments] |
Short Guide to TP Link Switch Suffixes Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:20 AM PDT Hi, since I am currently planning my own home network, I wanted to gather some information on what switch to buy and TP Link seems to have some nice options for a fair price. While I looked into their products, I discovered that the difference between a TP-Link TL-SG1016 and a TP-Link TL-SG1016D weren't all that clear to me. I looked for a full guide to the naming conventions (should someone from TP Link ever read this, here's a tipp from Captain Obvious: If your customers need a guide for your naming scheme, it isn't very good.) but couldn't find anything on the entire internet. So I made my own (by aggressively ctrl+tabbing through the different variations of the TL-SG1016 line). Here it is, in alphabetical order: D = No QoS E = Managed P = PoE S = small (no full 19" width) I am super not sure if I got the D part right, but that's the only spec that differed between these two. If you have any further information that you want to add, feel free to comment. [link] [comments] |
I need help with 100mbps router and 1000mbps switch only 100mbs lan speed Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:26 AM PDT So I wanted to setup a home NAS and I have some problems. My internet is slow so my ISP gave me a 100 mbps router so I bought a 1000mbps switch thinking that my NAS and PC will be able to use the gigabit speed between them. So the setup is that the switch is connected to the router and the NAS and PC is connected to the switch but I still only get 100mbps speed on file transfers. Am I missing something or how can I get faster speed between the nas and PC? The nas uses open media vault if that matters. [link] [comments] |
would the TP-Link Deco X20 3 pack work for this situation? Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:57 AM PDT I am thinking of keeping my existing Linksys WRT3200 AC router and connecting a wifi mesh network to this to get wifi downstairs. the parts in red is what I want to add. do all 3 of the units in the TP-link Deco X20 come with LAN ports? the reason I ask is because I was originally checking out the Eero but notice that only one has a LANport and the other 2 are wi-fi extenders which would not work in my situation. I was also looking into the Netgear Mk63 and the Asus Zenwifi XD4. but based on other posts on reddit I have seen reliability issues with high latency. Since the downstairs TV will be used for streaming movies / playing PS5 there cant be any reliability issues. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Nov 2021 02:54 PM PDT tl;dr - cannot connect to nordVPN with new netgear router; need a long term solution.
I really only have the need for one of my computers to connect to a VPN. Everything else can (and is) wifi. My question is - is there some type of work around for this? One possible thought based on my extremely limited understanding of networking (i.e. none): Put a managed switch between the modem and my router; then wire my desktop directly to the managed switch, circumventing the router for an access point, all other traffic flows through the router. I will say I'm not totally opposed to replacing the router if absolutely necessary. Other than this issue it has been really great and resolved some of the issue from the old one (speed and range).
