Posted: 27 Nov 2021 10:46 AM PST I teach about the command line and Linux in general on discord anyone interested can pm me to get the discord link. Apart from this on the discord, I post resources, and you can ask anything related and meet people also interested in computer science in general. [link] [comments] |
Why are Arch-based distros (and rolling release distros) not recommended to beginners? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:41 PM PST I mean sure you have the CLI installer but this won't explain why stuff such as Arco, Garuda, and Endeavour (which use GUI ones) also aren't recommended either. And from what I've read the "unstable" part of rolling release is that a distro with a release schedule like that just changes quickly instead of breaking a lot of times. And speaking of breaking, they do also happen in point release distros, and the breaking might be even more catastrophic in said distros compared to rolling release ones considering that you have to update more things. P.S Take the whole post with a grain of salt since I still use Windows 10 and all of my Linux experience as of writing this post was temporarily testing distros in VMs. Free to debunk all of my claims! Can I start a graphical program from ssh? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 11:37 AM PST What I really want is to give my NAS sever (Ubuntu PC) a HDMI cable to my television - and then be able to ssh into it and start up a video. Can I do that? A VNC connection might work. But I would prefer if only the video is shown on screen (i.e. not me using the terminal). Also I would prefer to ssh in, with just a terminal. And perhaps even have it start on something (CGI-bin web-server, IoT-devices, cron-job, ..., so a way to do it from command line would be preferred). [link] [comments] |
Is it a good idea to set a Symbolic Link for the home & installation folders? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 07:12 PM PST I am doing some research because I have been wanting to switch to Linux for some time now, but I am not able to do so because of a couple of things, and in this case, I am referring to the File System. It's a little confusing at first, yeah, but I could get used to it. The real issue comes when I learned that there is no really an easy way of setting where I want my home and installation folders to be. For example, in Windows I can decide where every program is installed. In Linux, I can't (as far as I know). That is pretty useful because I have a main SSD where I store the system and some essential programs and I also have a second HDD to store files and programs with less importance. I saw that there was a way to do this via a GUI with Ubuntu, but the feature is gone. For now, I am using symbolic links to sync my files from /home/ to /folder/home in my second drive. However, this makes me wonder some questions like: Is this the best approach? Where are the files actually stored? Because if I open a text file, it says that it is stored in the location where I opened it from (sometimes /home/ and other times /folder/home) Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
What’s flattened mean in flattened device tree Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:54 PM PST Hi team, as title. I can understand what device tree is. But why call it flattened? [link] [comments] |
KDE Neon is sometimes a bit too unstable for me, what alternative would you recommend me? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:34 AM PST Hey, I am completely into linux after half a year or so of trying it. Already tried Mint (crashed two times so quitted it), Manjaro (bad reputation of the Company?), MXLinux (pretty old but nicely running and Conky manager) and now KDE Neon because of newer KDE features. I like it very much, but sometimes experience hard crashes (Of the KDE Environment, all apps working), where I have to reboot (or figure out how to reboot only the KDE desktop? All commands I found didnt work...) to get it working again. I thought about OpenSUSE tumbleweed KDE or Kubuntu, maybe Arch (using Archfi?) or Fedora? Something with good and relatively new KDE, one of the main distros for best support probably. I like the big range of available packages and I think I would want to stay with debian, as many Windows-Mac-Linux apps I know only share .deb files right? But I am open to alternatives, just dont want to switch around so much. I am already using two partitions, so that I should be able to easily switch the distro. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
CrossPosting: Ubuntu 20.04 on Macbook Pro 2012 Posted: 27 Nov 2021 04:32 PM PST Hi, I just posted this on /r/ubuntu, but maybe I should have posted it here instead: I finally installed Ubuntu on an old 2012 Macbook pro 13 (Retina) To the point, things that worked out of the box:
Need to properly configure
Questions
I see a lot of documentation online that seems super helpful but I'm not sure which ones to follow, as some of them are from 2009 (as an example). [link] [comments] |
Need help with disabling RST to install Linux Mint Posted: 27 Nov 2021 12:31 PM PST Hey guys. I am finally switching to Linux on an older computer (HP Pavilion 15 cs). The hard drive died on me a few days ago and now that I have a new ssd installed I wanted to put Linux mint on it. The live boot works fine but when I go to install it, the installer tells me I have RST enabled and I need to disable it. The problem is I don't have an option on the bios to disable it and I don't have Windows on it to do command prompt things. I could really use some help with disabling it. [link] [comments] |

Need GUI program to encrypt folders (already have full disk encryption) Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:42 PM PST I often need to backup files either to cloud or portable drives. For this I used to use encrypted disk images on mac, which had a really easy and quick GUI to mount / unmount / create a disk. I'm looking for something similar, don't want to use the command line. Something that would allow me to mount / unmount / create an encrypted folder in a few clicks without having to remember commands. [link] [comments] |
can Mplayer display subtitles in a separate window or in the console? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:34 PM PST I sometimes watch videos that have much more subtitles than standard movies. I would like to be able to display the subtitles in a separate window or in the console. is that possible? [link] [comments] |
Operation: Enter BIOS on old computer Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:28 PM PST I have a Lenovo desktop from 2012. Perfect for Linux install. Only problem is when I enter the BIOS, it is a completely black screen. Windows boots properly with no display issues. Have been looking everywhere online for about a week and a half and am about ready to give up. Anyone have any suggestions/ tricks? [link] [comments] |
Downloading Linux distro on a bloated to hell Dell laptop Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:26 PM PST So I'm trying to boot up Arch Linux on my Dell Vostro 5402 laptop. I've uninstalled all of the Windows programs associated with Dell. When I put in the flash with the arch iso and went to boot with it, I got some SupportAssist On-board Diagnostics thing, and it says "Operating System Loader has no signature. Incompatible with SecureBoot." After that I just hit continue and it goes back to Windows. So I'm wondering if y'all see something I'm doing wrong here, and if it's even possible to get Arch Linux up and running with these on-board programs. [link] [comments] |
How do I install gentoo from a script? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 02:23 PM PST I just fininished an hour's install of gentoo just for it to not boot properly and have to start all over. I installed unscripted to learn how the system works so now I'm happy to use a script from github (https://github.com/nathanshearer/gentooinstall) but there are no instructions besides "clone it". How do I use this script for install? [link] [comments] |

Struggling to mount Samba share Posted: 27 Nov 2021 10:09 AM PST I've got 2 machines (both VMs in this case but the share will be used on a couple other machines): Ubuntu Server 20.04.3 LTS and Mint 20.2. The server has Samba running but it is refusing to mount on the Mint machine. I'm mounting as normal with This would make me think that I'm using the wrong name for the share but looking in /etc/samba/smb.conf I have called it public, and it allows guest so won't need a password. Folder has full rwx and is set to nogroups and noowners. I've tried both Firewall is allowing Samba through fine, and the error doesn't look like it's failing to communicate mine you. Below is the bit I've added to smb.conf for the new folder: [link] [comments] |
Are there any linux tools to help reduce tracking and improve privacy? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:15 AM PST I know I can't entirely avoid it without extreme measures. But I seriously want to learn if there are ways to make the lives of advertisers and trackers a bit harder. Any help/suggestions? Please share even platform independent tools like browser extensions or whatever if they will help. [link] [comments] |
How to append flags to aliases? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:01 AM PST I have set up the following alias of So when I code, I will write something like But it doesn't work. If I remove the -m flag and add it on invocation, then it works. But i'm lazy and I want to save myself 2 keystrokes. What am I missing here? [link] [comments] |
Specific need, numpad on zenbook Posted: 27 Nov 2021 02:19 PM PST I'm getting my ASUS ZenBook 13 OLED UM325UA 13,3" FHD 4 next week. R7 5700u, 16gb ram etc. Thing is, it has a numpad option on the touch pad which was a selling point for me. I'm wondering if it's possible to keep that functionality with Linux? I don't have any experience relevant experience with Linux or tinkering with drivers and given my current life situation I don't have the time to learn much, so I need any solution to be straightforward. I'm leaning towards mint as my distro but am willing to go with something else if that's what it takes (as long as it's still "beginner friendly" [link] [comments] |
Need help with wifi driver (Socket I/O timed out) Posted: 27 Nov 2021 02:07 PM PST Need help with wifi driver (Socket I/O timed out) I'm trying to install the wifi driver for my laptop "pamac build rtl8821ce-dkms-git" But get the message "Failed to query https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc/?v=5&type=info&arg[]=rtl8821ce-dkms-git from AUR: Socket I/O timed out" "Error: target not found: rtl8821ce-dkms-git" [link] [comments] |

Fingerprint sensor on Lenovo IdeaPad 14ALC05 Posted: 27 Nov 2021 01:38 PM PST So...I really wanna move from Windows to Linux but I just got so used to fingerprint sensor on my laptop. From what I found out it uses Goodix fingerprint sensor but from all my experiments I just couldn't make it work. I wanna use some Debian-based distro...probably Ubuntu because I really like GNOME and it seems very friendly to use to me. I installed the distro and from fprint site it says "The GNOME desktop supports fingerprint management through its Users Settings panel. Most Linux distributions support fingerprint login through fprintd." but I'm too stupid and unexperienced to make it work :( Edit: on some Dell site I found out that there is Linux driver for Goodix fingerprint [link] [comments] |
f.lux on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS no longer working Posted: 27 Nov 2021 01:25 PM PST I don't know what happened but quite recently the program f.lux as a blue light filter is no longer making my screen orange. The program still launches and successfully displays the appindicator in the top bar but it isn't doing anything. I use Ubuntu 20.04.3 and my Laptop Display. It worked before and I don't have any Nvidia cards in my Laptop. Edit: It might be because I'm using Wayland now but I'm not sure. [link] [comments] |
