Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:48 AM PST I know nothing about IT yet and I'm currently doing my AAS degree I just started, I'm feeling hopeless as I heard it's oversaturated and hard to find a job after, what course can I buy now to get me a job as soon as possible while I study for my associates, so when I get my associates I can get a raise already and get more opportunity. I want to make 50k by the time I get an associates, is that possible? [link] [comments] |

Any Canadians know if there are colleges that offer two year online associates degrees? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 12:03 PM PST The college in the city i live in is not online. I'd rather not commute if i don't have to and most stuff can be virtualized anyways. Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
I need help defining my roll for negotiating my salary Posted: 27 Nov 2021 08:55 AM PST Hello I work for a medium-sized company I get paid 30k euro a year, I work on a small team and we all have the same title but our tasks are very different. I pretty much handle the support for our end users by myself from the moment they start to when they leave the company and everything in between. I do a lot of work in active directory and SharePoint, Creating groups, assigning out permissions, I often have to fix issues by editing the attribute editor or running some light PowerShell on the tenant. I work with power automate and have rolled out about 40 processes of them in the 2 years I have worked here. Nothing too completed though. I look after the printing, Purchasing of equipment, asset registry, and a lot of our SAAS services such as dousign and a few other specialized ones. I do most of the cable patching in the business, Doing drops and changing Vlans and policing on our cisco switches. I also have to roll out small projects a few times a year, I am currently working on installing some video conferencing equipment in a few of our rooms. I am currently been trained to roll out updates to our servers and devices using WSUS I do a lot of data analysis, I have very good with excel and I am able to pull in data from pretty much any system we have and create reports and graphs. This varies from very basic stuff like how many people have a certain version of software on our domain to pretty advanced stuff like importing logs from our wireless controllers and creating a report that can track issues that occur on individual devices throughout the building and give a breakdown of when, where, how often they happened. 30k a year would be on the low end for a help desk position in my city, I am early on in my career but I believe my duties and skills have gone beyond helpdesk and my job would be a mix of Help desk, SYS admin, and IT analyst. I would love some help defining my roll , thanks [link] [comments] |
Cybersecurity interview! Very hard! Any suggestions Posted: 27 Nov 2021 02:03 PM PST Cybersecurity interviews are annoying. I was asked to explain how does a SIEM TOOL work and to provide an example of how I use a SIEM tool on a daily basis. Also, how to add a powershell script in splunk . Any suggestions?? New graduate. [Resume Review] Is this resume good enough for Jr. DevOps/SRE? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 01:34 PM PST Resume here: Imgur: The magic of the Internet So I recently obtained my RHCSA and wanted to make a shift towards DevOps since that's where Infrastructure-as-Code seems to be. As far as jobs go I was going to just look for "Linux Remote" and apply to those. In my original I do have a QR code that points to my web portfolio in the top left side. In my day job I actually have a much longer list of achievements since a lot of things do break with heavy impact (i.e. complete show-stoppers in production), but I figured I should tailor my resume to appeal to the automation stuff. My own thoughts:
As far as what to have I was looking at 3 things:
I don't know for certain whether 1 or 2 page resumes are better with my background (less than 5 years of working exp in IT), so I figured it's better to have both and try see which one gets more bites. Is what I have enough substance to get me in? I don't have proper CM/CI experience, but I don't think I can get that where I am (government, which largely doesn't automate anything). Junior Network Engineer Interview this week - need advice Posted: 27 Nov 2021 03:42 PM PST So I managed to get an interview coming up this week and I was wondering what sort of questions I need to ask the hiring manager that are not too dumb or intrusive besides the role and responsibilities. I would appreciate if anyone has been through a similar role. [link] [comments] |
Is there a recommended school for learning I.T online, or should I just look for certificates? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 02:07 AM PST I'm curious what school is best for earning a degree online for I.T. Lots of people say certifications are best but others want a college degree before applying. Which school is best to earn a degree while also earning certifications? [link] [comments] |
Would it be a bad idea to apply for a job at a company I previously turned down? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 09:21 AM PST I interviewed at a place a few months back for a Systems Analyst position. The company is only five minutes from my home, which is rare to find an opportunity so close to home. They later called and there was apparently a second departure in the department. They offered me a different job (IT Generalist), which seemed to be a combination of the SA position as well as a DBA position. I turned it down as it paid LESS than my current position and there were a few red flags. Several months went by and now the DBA job is opened and it pays MORE (possibly significantly more) than my current position (a wide range from 10% more to twice as much - could have been an error tho). For that money, I'd be willing to take the job. There may be some bad feelings since I already turned them down. They did try to get me to do two jobs for the price of one though, before market realities caught up to them. Should I reach ou tto them? If so, how do I go about it? Debating whether to re-send my resume, contact the HR guy, or contact the IT manager directly as I have his email and phone number. [link] [comments] |

I'm a Mexican, is it possible to learn to program and enter the field working online only?? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 04:57 PM PST I'm a Mexican citizen. I already know some programming. Is it possible to get to a level where I can make money online and be good at it? Would any companies out there be interested in a part time or full time offer for someone like me? What should one learn to work remotely in 21/22? (Entry level, anything) Posted: 26 Nov 2021 02:05 PM PST Hey guys Thanks for taking the time out of your day to read my post and contribute. This isn't a halp guyz how do I make money 0nline post. Moreso a simple what's in demand, and what should one learn to start working remote, asap? All things worth doing take time. Researched on certs, currently have a Help Desk position. Just looking to transition from that to something remote. Anything. Not concerned about initial pay because this is the wonderful world of IT so you can move up in anything. Just a bit overwhelming. We have DevOps, Cloud, Cyber Sec, back end, mobile...I was looking big into cloud. Afaik cloud certs and just shotgun resume? Also been learning to build sites via HTML/CSS/Webflow. Is it normal for employers to ask for a credit score before bien hired? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 04:27 PM PST I applied for a Entry Level Apprenticeship for Accenture USA and i got an email saying that the company requires to have the credit score for potential employees on file. To College or Not to College..that is the question Posted: 27 Nov 2021 04:21 PM PST Its a long story, so I'll be concise. I graduated with an AAS is web programming in 2018. Since I've graduated, I haven't kept my skills up at all but when I was in school I enjoyed my course work. Fast forward to now I work at a service desk for a hospital system in my area. I studied for and received the A+ certification at this job. No web development jobs or coding at all in that time. I want to work towards being a web developer and I have a pretty good idea of what that would look like. I have about two years left away from a bachelor's degree in web development. Would it be a better idea to start training myself and try to get a front end job as soon as possible or to finish my degree and then hit the job hunt? I'm twenty-eight. [link] [comments] |
Could I be successful in a Software Engineering Program? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 04:20 PM PST Hey guys! Just wanted a couple opinions from those of you actually in the field and/or studying to become a software developer. Would someone with little to no experience in tech be able to become a software engineer? I'm someone who is willing to learn and I want to apply to this program, but I'm worried I won't be successful due to my lack of knowledge. What do you guys think? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Nov 2021 12:18 PM PST As a University student in the UK (Foundation Degree in Computing) I always wondered whats more important. Because when I tried to applying for an IT job I was declined as I didn't have any work experience even though I spent 4 years studying IT course in college and now I started IT University course. Luckily I managed to secure decent part time job with large variety of IT roles which will be worth adding to my CV. Am I wasting my time in the University??? [link] [comments] |
How to get started with AppSec Vulnerability Scans (SAST/Fortify/Checkmarx) Posted: 27 Nov 2021 03:48 PM PST Currently just landed a new job as a college hire in my company's Application Security team. They don't expect me to know how to learn how to perform a SAST scan anytime soon because I'm currently doing more administrative tasks and the analysts in my team have been in their position for many many years. However, one of my team members suggested taking a course in SAST Fortify/Checkmarx and also learning how to read Java. I would really like to do what he suggests however I can't seem to find any courses to help get started. Does anyone have any advice/suggestions in how I could get started? Perhaps there is a certificate out there I could work towards? My company uses a higher education assistance so I am open to taking courses that I might have to pay for. [link] [comments] |
Which IT job lets you find a traveling position easily? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 02:07 PM PST Parents guilt trip me into finding a job close by them when I get my degree etc. to counter that I wanna find a job where I can travel , I would like to travel around as I hate being in the same state all my life [link] [comments] |
Support Engineer at Amazon or Software engineer in a smaller company? Posted: 27 Nov 2021 01:59 PM PST Hello, I have been applying for the first engineering job for over 1,5 years and finally, I was given job offers in two companies one is Amazon (Support Engineer) and the second company is unknown but the position is Software Engineer. I can't decide where to go. Does it make sense to go to Amazon and in the future become a software engineer or would it be better to get a Software Engineer title first in a smaller company and apply to Amazon again but as a Software engineer? Major Mistake (In my mind). How to cope with it and how to prepare for the worst? Posted: 26 Nov 2021 08:15 AM PST Hello everyone, So I believe I've made quite a huge error. I was troubleshooting someone's printer at my job, I wanted to try and connect it to another power source which involved me moving it. I forgot to remove one of the cables in the back which resulted in me tearing out a connection from the printer itself, rendering it useless. I'm only a couple months in to this job and I am so incredibly nervous about the repercussions, the person was so nice to me and said "it was broken before you got here!". I think she may have seen how flustered I was about it, which looking back, is not a good look either. I don't have the power to get them a new one, they themselves would have to reach out and report that the printer is broken to get a new one given to them. Main point here is I feel very foolish and my self esteem has hit rock bottom over this. I wanted to see if anybody had any tips regarding maybe staying calm and collected after making an error like that? or if I should start applying to other jobs? lol I am freaking out a little bit considering this happened an hour ago. Edit: the printer was one of the smaller, personal ones as well, not the main office one. Edit2: After all these responses, I actually feel more foolish about making it such a big deal. I'm quite grateful for this community. I hope you all continue to move forward in your careers. Thank you once again all. [link] [comments] |
Looking to Start a Career in I.T/Digital Forensics Posted: 27 Nov 2021 11:38 AM PST Hello, I'm interested in starting a career in digital forensics. I've worked in I.T for about 5 years now and I'm finally ready to pick a field. I do have some questions that I was hoping the Reddit community would be able to answer or provide some commentary on. 1. Personally - I use MacOS. I had a short stint where I edited drone footage and I liked the work flow using my MacBook. I've been fine with doing the work I currently do in I.T on my Mac. I use a MacBook that runs on Apple's M1 chip. I understand that I'm utilizing an ARM instead of x86 instruction set with this SoC. I'm just beginning to learn about the world of Digital Forensics. I figure it's setup mainly using the x86 architecture. However, I was wondering if it was still feasible to continue down this path with the system/setup I have now using Rosetta 2 to translate? 2. I don't have any certifications. I know it's very very unlikely to get a job without having at least one. From what I've read online. A non-specific vendor cert is ideal as a first one. I think I'd work on getting the CCE cert first. Is this an appropriate one for the first? This also plays into my concern with using ARM infrastructure and a MacBook as my main work station. I'm not sure if I'd be able to meet the system requirements for the CCE Boot-Camp. (If anyone had any knowledge or previous experience that would be great). If I wouldn't be able to do this cert are there any known ones that would work with my system or is it all the same because of the software that they utilize? 3. Besides certifications, what other computer specific skills could I spend some time focusing on to make myself look more appealing. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Cert requirements for associate cybersecurity analyst Posted: 27 Nov 2021 06:11 AM PST I was looking at a job description and it mentioned that the job required a fundamental understanding of server operating systems and a general understanding of data center infrastructure. It also talked about about scripting and automation. But it left out certifications or details. Would a Sec + be enough to cover this? Does this sound more computer science heavy? [link] [comments] |
2 years in help desk and I want to move on to cyber security or software dev Posted: 26 Nov 2021 11:27 PM PST Hi all, I'm currently 24 and have spent 2 years working in helpdesk/support. The first year was at an MSP where I would answer phones and resolve client issues, watch a monitoring system of all the client servers and sometimes go onsite to assist with issues that couldn't be handled over the phone. The second year was internal support at a big company assisting with desktop issues and their proprietary application issues. I am now really disliking support and having to constantly deal with end users and their issues all day. I have learnt quite a bit and I think it's time for me to move on as support is getting quite repetitive and I am not too happy constantly answering phones and work better on tasks where I can dial in and be left alone. I currently just have a diploma in IT Networking which landed me my first helpdesk position. I learnt the CCNA content so I could probably brush up on that and do the test if it helps me with the plan below. I have an interest to transition/move up to either cyber security or programming/software development.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2021 05:31 PM PST Really just looking for a resume point, as I'm trying to move into gov sector following my BSc in Cybersecurity. Military.com says, "Doubles your worth and ability to get jobs in certain sectors that non-cleared personnel could not get. Since employers do not have to pay for your clearance application, the money saved often goes back into the employee's salary." If any of you have seen this or experienced this, can you speak of your experience? [link] [comments] |
