Suggest me a laptop under 250$ for school and light programming

    Posted: 04 Oct 2021 12:11 AM PDT

Hi, I need a laptop for school and light programming. I bought a Chromebook but it was really painful to set things up. I am going to return it. I need a windows laptop untill I start university. Found this one: https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-15-6-FHD-Celeron-N4020-4GB-RAM-128GB-SSD-Black-Windows-10-Home-in-S-mode-plus-Microsoft-Office-15-dw1001wm/441818754

It looks fine to me, has FHD display, decent battery life, upgradable ram and, SSD. What do you guys think about my decision? If you have any recommendations I'll be happy to hear them.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    250 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Screen battery and keyboard are 3 most important thing to me

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It would be nice to have a lightweight laptop but it is not mandatory

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

No more than 15.6 but I'd love to get a 13 or 14 inch if the performance is on par with the others

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm planning to write and run C++, Java and Python programs in it. Maybe web design.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Don't wanna play AAA games, just old school stuff like hl1.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and SD card reader if possible

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

AUS ($2kish) Lenovo Legion 5 or Macbook Pro??

    Posted: 04 Oct 2021 12:11 AM PDT

Hey guys, need help deciding between a Macbook Pro or a Lenovo Legion 5.

Looking for a laptop for... well, pretty much everything. Primarily I'll be using it for Uni (Writing degree) and music recording (with some video editing thrown in, guitar covers for youtube). It'll be my only computer too so that means basic everyday uses like Netflix, social media, etc. Based off that I think I'll need something with 16gb RAM? (I think? I don't really know)

Is it worth it to just buy a Macbook Pro? I've always leaned towards windows OS because that's what I grew up on and familiarity means I can hit the ground running.

Really struggling on which way to turn, all help will be appreciated!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Australia, roughly $2k AUD (Unless cheaper alternative)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Sure
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance, Battery Life, Everything else
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Doesn't matter
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some video editing, primarly music recording/production and writing. Unsure of which DAW to use, possibly Studio One.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard, reliable and solid. A few ports would be great too.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm a total tech newbie so I'm a bit out of my depth. I've chosen the two options based off of googling/reddit searching, if there are any alternatives I'm open to suggestions. Price is a consideration but I've accepted I'll have to spend about $2k (Roughly $1500 USD). If something is available for cheaper that would be cool. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

    Please help a brother out

    Posted: 04 Oct 2021 03:48 AM PDT

Turns out choosing a good laptop is going to be the hardest decision of my life yet.

This IdeaPad 5 (14) AMD Laptop | Affordable PC | Lenovo Canada is the one I've currently decided to go with although that one has a 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. Would still appreciate more recommendations if you have any. I just want a capable performance machine. Dedicated gpu is not a requirement. The laptop is going to be used for work (coding/webdev) and daily bowsing.

Have any of you bought this personally ? Anything I need to be concerned about ? would this be good buy ?

ps: this is probably going to be the most i can stretch my budget

Laptop for a Blender (maybe Houdini) beginner, but also good enough for gaming, and music production (Germany, max budget €2000)

    Posted: 04 Oct 2021 05:00 AM PDT

First off, I'm not sure if I should wait for Intel 12 series (and then Nvidia 4000?) or just get a laptop already! This is the biggest dilemma. Second, I can't decide what's overkill and what's not for my use case. I see choices for only €1000 and I think they could really do fine for what I need.

''Current'' setup (already sold it): 12 GB RAM, Nvidia 1050 Ti, i7-7700HQ, Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 2TB. I mean it was a fine setup. Didn't have problems with it for music production. It could be a lot better, but it was not horrible. A lot of the games I liked did run well at 720p and 1080p, but a lot of the new titles I liked such as RDR2 and Cyberpunk were pretty much unplayable at 1080p Medium Settings.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
€2000 (though €1500 would be the sweet spot if possible, I'd prefer not to overpay if the pricing is not justified)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I won't move around much maybe once or twice a year. Performance is #1 priority. Then it's probably build quality. A good screen that's nice to look at is a big plus, specially if it has a good color accuracy. 4K 120 Hz would be an even bigger plus.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Don't care.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Don't care.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    1. Adobe Premier Pro mostly for 4K videos but not every day, just from time to time for fun. I'm starting with Houdini and Blender (and maybe ZBrush, Cinema 4D at some point), but it's mainly for digital arts, not for creating games or animation or anything like that. Just a hobby, I want to learn and create cool stuff.
    2. I also run Ableton and Pro Tools with a lot plugins. So 32GB RAM would be a great addition.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
RDR2 and Cyberpunk at 4K 60 FPS High Settings would be really nice. Half Life Alyx at 4K would be great too, but not necessary, 1440p 50FPS is ok too for Alyx. I have Oculus Quest 2.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
N/A. Just don't want the laptop to stop working after one year. And no HP please. I've had 3 HP devices and all were terrible.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
32GB RAM is a must, but I'm fine with upgrading it myself if the laptop comes with 16GB or 8GB, as it is pretty cheap from what I see online. Could easily buy 2x16GB for less than €160.

But do I really need Ryzen 9? Do I really need RTX 3070 or would 3060 or even 3050 Ti be good enough?

I would LOVE to have an Alienware, but is the pricing justified? You can easily get an Acer or Lenovo with the same spec for almost €500 cheaper usually.

For example, is the 2230 euro price tag for Dell Alienware m15 R5, Ryzen 9 5900HX, RTX 3070, 16 GB RAM really justified? How about DELL Alienware m15 R6 i7-11800H, 32GB, RTX3070 Win10 for 2300 euros? Specially when Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ACH6H, Ryzen 7 5800H, 32GB RAM, RTX 3070 costs only 1800 euros?

It's even more complicated when ACER Nitro 5 with RTX 3080 costs 1920 euros!!

Or this Acer with RTX 3060, Ryzen 5 only costs 900 euros!

And here are 3 more options that are making me really confused as to whether a Dell is really worth it and whether I must really spend 2000 euros, also whether I REALLY need to have a RTX 3070.

    ASUS Ryzen 9, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM at €1500 (but do I REALLY need a Ryzen 9 5900HX?)

Lenovo Legion 5 Ryzen 5, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM at €1100 (but isn't Ryzen 5 too weak for my use case?)

    DELL G15 5510 F7PKR, i7-10870H, RTX3060, 16GB at €1200

Finally these two Gigabyte AERO models are really tempting because of their nice screen (according to reviews!). However one has 1080p 144Hz with RTX 3070 and the other has 2160p 60 Hz with RTX 3060

2 in 1 Laptop for drawing.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:46 PM PDT

Hi all, thanks for reading this. I'm just in the situation of needing a new laptop, and who better to ask than the good people of Reddit? :P

My situation: new to digital art, but would like to try it out. This would be the primary use of this laptop. The laptop would also be used for some light document work (working on documents on MS Teams, etc) due to my work, but nothing notable, as I have a PC for heavy work.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.£350, buying in the UK
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?- Nope
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?- Except for it being 2 in 1 and having good sensitivity for light digital art, I'm not too bothered.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?-Not at all important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.- N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.- Krita
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?- None, I have a PC for gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?- Preferably supports a good stylus.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.- I'm also open to Tablet suggestions, though please keep in mind my budget; the cost for a keyboard and stylus for the tablet and the tablet itself would preferably still be under £350

    Legion 7 r7-5800H RTX 3070 or r9-5900HX

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 02:17 PM PDT

Hi guys, I was looking to buy a laptop (in Argentina) and I found a deal with Lenovo that´s too good to not take it but I have this dilemma, I can´t decide between this 2 models. All other specs are the same but the CPU (Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX) and the GPU (RTX 3070 with the R7 and RTX 3080 with the R9). There is a difference of around 500 USD. I will mostly use it for light simulation, daily drive it and gaming. Thanks in advance

Most secure laptop. No spy ware, no calling home to servers in countries outside the USA.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 02:00 PM PDT

Least nosy companies with servers located in the US. This is for legal work but sensitive IP, and financial transactions. I'm thinking the cleanest machines might come from Microsoft or Dell Precision, but I don't know. A gaming laptop would be fine. Price not an issue. Needs to be a windows machine for certain software.

Hey, I'm gifting a close one a laptop.. she's a student and will use it mostly for school things, and video editing like YouTube and other basic video editing software... It needs to be something really reliable as she always complains about her old laptop crashing...

What can you suggest me? The cheaper the better ofc but i really want something reliable, size doesn't matter much, weight too..

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$600 but would prefer using 500 and under, but give me all suggestions under 600 please

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance first, battery life, build quality

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Kinda important, I'm open to all suggestions, of course lighter would be better, but if a laptop is great then doesn't matter that much

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I Don't know which program she'll use, but probably video editing programs, and also some programs to edit YouTube videos. No gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    None

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Reliable build quality

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion

Computer Engineer Looking to Replace Dell XPS 9370 (Budget $1000-$1500 USD)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 09:53 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1000-$1500 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don't really care about form factor. I would like a laptop that maximizes performance and battery life but doesn't skimp on build quality.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight and thinness are not the most important factors, but they do play a role as I will be transporting this laptop around campus.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Either 14" or 15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I am doing some CAD currently and running a VM using VMware Workstation. I will also use this laptop for programming tasks and running other Computer Engineering software.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Looking for a good keyboard as this will be the main device I use for programming. Also really big on reliable build quality as I want this thing to last. Preferably looking for something with a decent webcam for Zoom calls for class and job interviews.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Replacing my Dell XPS 13 9370 due to performance issues. Webcam doesn't work, trackpad becomes unresponsive at times, and it runs a lot slower than it used to. Because of this, I would prefer to avoid taking the Dell route again and try something new. Also began to find the lack of ports and small screen size inconvenient. Want to upgrade from 8GB of RAM to at least 16GB; upgradable RAM would also be nice but seems to be rare. I've been considering the ThinkPad range of laptops, but I have never used one and do not know which model to target. I am open to all suggestions except for MacBooks as I prefer to run Windows/Linux.

Looking for a not over the top gaming laptop

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 09:29 PM PDT

I honestly not a fan of the over the top flashy gaming laptops with gamer plastered all over the damn thing. I'll use this for mostly school and gaming. I would rather have a laptop with these sort of specs-https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/gaming-laptops/alienware-m15-r6-gaming-laptop/spd/alienware-m15-r6-laptop/wnm15r6exkgs but I'm willing to go a little bit up or lower in price. Battery life is important but I don't mind size or if it's a bit heavy.

I want to buy a laptop for my little brother (USA, ~$500)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:39 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    500 USD, USA

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    absolutely

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance> build quality>battery life>form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming! I know he loves Roblox, so it's most important. I understand the cheaper laptop is the harder to run games.. so these aren't a deal breaker if they can't run : Fortnite, Dark Souls 3, Borderlands, MHOJ2, Minecraft

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't think setting are important; as long as its not super laggy. Games listed above are ones he enjoys 🙂

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    N/A

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My little brother is pretty humble & not picky. While I'm not super wealthy I'd like to get him a laptop for his birthday, I know he's appreciate it dearly. He's expressed he's okay with a cheaper laptop. My budget COULD go up to 700 but he's IN LOVE with scary stuff, so I'm taking him to Hollywood Horror Nights… if it's absolutely necessary I can allocate the money from HHN to the laptop..however $500 would be best! Thanks !!!

MSI GP66 Leopard VS GIGABYTE AORUS 15P YD

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:27 PM PDT

Hi guys, im looking to buy a laptop for modeling and rendering softwares (Im an architect and im also a bit of a gamer) Im having a trouble trying to decide between these 2 monsters, any comment would help

1- MSI GP66 Leopard, this one has an Intel i7 11th gen processor (11800H) and a RTX 3070 (130 watts) with 8 gb of Vram, one of the big cons on this one is the screen, it has a IPS FHD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz Display which is kinda poor for its segment, it has 16GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM and 1 TB SSD for the incredible price of 1,499 usd.

2- GIGABYTE AORUS 15P YD, Ok this monster its equipped with the same processor, an 11800H intel processor, but on the graphics side, its loaded with a RTX 3080 (130w) witg 16 gb of Vram F*CK!..... This one also has a better screen, its an LCD antiglare 15.6 Inch FHD 1920 x 1080 IPS (240 Hz, 72% NTSC), it has 32 GB of DDR 3200MHz RAM (2x16), and the cherry on the pie is that the 1 TB SSD thats equipped with is a PCIE Gen 4.... the price es 2,199 usd.

700 Bucks between one another, but i think those are well justified with the specs of the gigabyte aorus..... what would you guys do? Tbh i think that the MSI $1,499 would do it just fine for my needs by only upgrading the ram. On the other hand, buying a laptop its a big deal for me, since its once every 4-5 years, so i kinda think that since im spending that ammount of money i should go for the highest option but still not sure what to do, those 700 bucks kinda hurt my wallet :( Wwyd?
