- Alright, Microsoft, listen up. If you're going to go around cramming Windows 11 down my throat, the least you could to is actually ALLOW ME TO USE IT. You can't cut me off and STILL try to drag me along.

Giving Windows 8.1 a second chance 7 years later. I love it Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:02 PM PDT So, like most people I uninstalled Windows 8.1 and decided to stay with 7 until this year. Most of you probably think it's pointless to switch to 8 rather than 10 but for some reason I decided to install it. I've been using 8.1 as my daily driver since July and I've fallen in love with it. Using 8.1 I've come to these conclusions
Overall, the user experience is on par with Win7 it's weird to say this but I actually really like the start screen now and yes, it DOES work on a PC. I kinda wish I could go back in time and give Windows 8 a second chance. I'll enjoy it now while it's still supported. I currently have it installed on 5 of my computers(I have a lot of licenses for it lol) [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:22 PM PDT Hi there, Today I installed a new SSD drive on my PC and moved the OS in it from the old one. To do so, I download the Windows Media Creation Tool and proceeded to install windows on the new SSD from a USB drive (and format the other SSD). All went ok and windows worked perfectly, but, since I never used the Media Creation Tool, I wanted to check the OS installation with SFC /scannow from the Windows Shell, to be sure everything was installed flawlessly: it surprisingly found some corrupted files and successfully replaced them, I then re-entered the command and this time the result was that no actions were required. My question is: how is that possible? Did the Media Creation Tool install a "not perfect" version of the OS? Does the command /scannow could have caused problems since it replaced some files on a newly installed copy of Windows 10? Thank you! [link] [comments]

Difference between Home and Pro version Posted: 03 Oct 2021 07:18 PM PDT I am an engineer. I use CAD for designing. One thing I have noticed is that when I install my professional CAD on windows 10 home version, the software tends to crash more often while doing simple tasks. On the other hand, the same software would work fine on the same pc after installing windows 10 pro. Many of the professional software don't support windows 10 home for installation. It won't install if you are using windows 10 home. So what really goes under the hood that's different in windows 10 pro that makes CAD perform better? [link] [comments]
can i make my own windows language? Posted: 03 Oct 2021 07:16 PM PDT i would just like to make it so when i press A it would type a different symbol, and so on. is there a way for me to set up one of those? [link] [comments]
Why does Windows Update need so much exclusive time? Posted: 03 Oct 2021 10:50 AM PDT I made the plunge to use Ubuntu as my full-time desktop about a decade ago and have only used Windows fairly intermittently since. But recently we needed to test some user scenarios on Windows and a VM wouldn't do, so I bought a bigger SSD, re-installed my Ubuntu system on one half and installed Windows alongside it (£50 for a media kit for a license I already own BTW, but that's HP being dicks, not Microsoft). The Windows install went pretty quickly and smoothly and I thought, "Hey, this isn't so bad." Then it came to installing updates. Four hours of updates. Three and a half of that in a state where I can't use the system because it says "Configuring Windows. Please don't turn off your system" or words to that general effect. Anyway, I did my testing and rebooting into Ubuntu and got on with things. Today I've booted Windows again. Again it wants to install updates. Again it spent about half an hour in a state where the system is unusable. This isn't a volume-of-updates thing. Ubuntu wants to install updates pretty often, in fact it seems to have got quite a lot more so since the 21.04 release. But what on earth is Windows doing that can take three and a half hours that requires exclusive use of the system? Ubuntu occasionally requires a reboot after an update; it's when either the kernel or libc has changed and it is always except never just a reboot. The process of actually installing the updates can always happen in the background while I'm working. It's not an internet connection thing. The machine has a wired connection to a 300Mbps internet connection. In three and a half hours, it should be able to download about 380GB if it so chooses. I'm really hoping Windows updates haven't got that bit while I wasn't looking, and anyway why can't the download happen while I'm working? It's not a disk speed thing. It's an M2 NVMe SSD. So what is Windows doing that it needs so much exclusive time on the system to install updates? [link] [comments]
Are there any tools to bring back some Windows 10 features in 11? Posted: 03 Oct 2021 06:27 AM PDT In example, the right click menu and right click on taskbar from 10. Are there anything out there to bring those back? I want to use 11 but I don't like every changes [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:43 PM PDT Tried adobe bridge, saw these (big enough) problems:
The first problem is a bigger problem that the 2nd, it's a usability problem. Decided any of these ways to find images would be good A) Searching all letters of image name Example:
B) Using and searching tags like in Evernote, blogs, etc D) Possibly other ways I dunno about C) Searching using metadata like the title
This is (re)-ordered by priority. I'm sure not sure which would be best until I test it When you do in incomplete search, would be nice if app has a live preview of all X (things) like Dynalist (and maybe other things) does How does suggested app find images? There are so many free image viewers. No need for Adobe to own this entire app type/category for just good finding and viewing of images. Desktop. Has anyone used nomacs? It's not being updated anymore [link] [comments]
Make Windows 11 Taskbar Look Like Windows 10 - Guide Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:56 PM PDT Making this simple guide, because without it I was extremely frustrated with the "upgrade" to Windows 11. Performance on Windows 11 is great, it just sucks to have to make UX compromises for the latest updates! The biggest issue was the loss of the title on apps and the taller taskbar which are both fixed here.

I'm trying to create a windows desktop from circa mid 2010 - early 2012. Is it good? Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:47 PM PDT I was still a toddler around that time and i saw a lot of people posts their desktop and i think it looks cool so i tried to make it realistic as possible. Any criticisms is welcome. Please tell me what did i miss or did wrong. Click here to see the photo [link] [comments]
Who remembers the Product Red version of Windows Vista? Posted: 03 Oct 2021 03:28 AM PDT I never got it but I've always wanted it, like it looked really good. One guy gave it away with a Product Red branded mouse (is it official though?). I wish Microsoft does something special like this again. [link] [comments]
