Simple Questions and Help Thread - Week of October 3rd 2021

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 06:34 AM PDT

Welcome to the Simple Questions thread, for questions that don't need their own thread, or to stand in for "Help" submissions. We still recommend you use the search, FAQ/Wiki on the sidebar, or even a Bing search before asking. Also please post general tech support related questions on /r/techsupport. Be sure to check out our new help subreddit, /r/WindowsHelp

Some examples of questions to ask:

    • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

    • How can I install Windows 11?

    • Can you recommend a program to play music?

    • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

Alright, Microsoft, listen up. If you're going to go around cramming Windows 11 down my throat, the least you could to is actually ALLOW ME TO USE IT. You can't cut me off and STILL try to drag me along.

I legit sat down and thought to myself, "What would it be like if I was the same as I am now, but in 2006?" And thus, this screenshot I just made was born:

Giving Windows 8.1 a second chance 7 years later. I love it

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:02 PM PDT

So, like most people I uninstalled Windows 8.1 and decided to stay with 7 until this year. Most of you probably think it's pointless to switch to 8 rather than 10 but for some reason I decided to install it. I've been using 8.1 as my daily driver since July and I've fallen in love with it. Using 8.1 I've come to these conclusions

    1. Windows 8.1 isn't bad, it's just different and I along with a lot of users were too stubborn to give it a chance. The start screen isn't the worst thing in the world. With my experience with server 2012R2 I've become much more proficient in using Windows. Right clicking on the start button is almost second nature to me now. Sure, the start menu is still superior but the start screen isn't as horrible as we made it out to be.
    2. Windows 8.1 is very snappy, boot times are amazing.
    3. If you install the aero glass mod it's truly the most beautiful OS I've ever seen. Plus I love the addition of a lock screen.

Overall, the user experience is on par with Win7 it's weird to say this but I actually really like the start screen now and yes, it DOES work on a PC. I kinda wish I could go back in time and give Windows 8 a second chance. I'll enjoy it now while it's still supported. I currently have it installed on 5 of my computers(I have a lot of licenses for it lol)

System File Checker (SFC) /scannow command found corrupted files on a newly installed copy of Windows 10, how is that possible?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 04:22 PM PDT

    Hi there,

Today I installed a new SSD drive on my PC and moved the OS in it from the old one. To do so, I download the Windows Media Creation Tool and proceeded to install windows on the new SSD from a USB drive (and format the other SSD).

All went ok and windows worked perfectly, but, since I never used the Media Creation Tool, I wanted to check the OS installation with SFC /scannow from the Windows Shell, to be sure everything was installed flawlessly: it surprisingly found some corrupted files and successfully replaced them, I then re-entered the command and this time the result was that no actions were required.

My question is: how is that possible? Did the Media Creation Tool install a "not perfect" version of the OS? Does the command /scannow could have caused problems since it replaced some files on a newly installed copy of Windows 10?

    Thank you!

Difference between Home and Pro version

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 07:18 PM PDT

I am an engineer. I use CAD for designing. One thing I have noticed is that when I install my professional CAD on windows 10 home version, the software tends to crash more often while doing simple tasks. On the other hand, the same software would work fine on the same pc after installing windows 10 pro. Many of the professional software don't support windows 10 home for installation. It won't install if you are using windows 10 home. So what really goes under the hood that's different in windows 10 pro that makes CAD perform better?

Why does Windows Update need so much exclusive time?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 10:50 AM PDT

I made the plunge to use Ubuntu as my full-time desktop about a decade ago and have only used Windows fairly intermittently since. But recently we needed to test some user scenarios on Windows and a VM wouldn't do, so I bought a bigger SSD, re-installed my Ubuntu system on one half and installed Windows alongside it (£50 for a media kit for a license I already own BTW, but that's HP being dicks, not Microsoft). The Windows install went pretty quickly and smoothly and I thought, "Hey, this isn't so bad."

Then it came to installing updates. Four hours of updates. Three and a half of that in a state where I can't use the system because it says "Configuring Windows. Please don't turn off your system" or words to that general effect. Anyway, I did my testing and rebooting into Ubuntu and got on with things.

Today I've booted Windows again. Again it wants to install updates. Again it spent about half an hour in a state where the system is unusable.

This isn't a volume-of-updates thing. Ubuntu wants to install updates pretty often, in fact it seems to have got quite a lot more so since the 21.04 release. But what on earth is Windows doing that can take three and a half hours that requires exclusive use of the system? Ubuntu occasionally requires a reboot after an update; it's when either the kernel or libc has changed and it is always except never just a reboot. The process of actually installing the updates can always happen in the background while I'm working.

It's not an internet connection thing. The machine has a wired connection to a 300Mbps internet connection. In three and a half hours, it should be able to download about 380GB if it so chooses. I'm really hoping Windows updates haven't got that bit while I wasn't looking, and anyway why can't the download happen while I'm working?

It's not a disk speed thing. It's an M2 NVMe SSD.

So what is Windows doing that it needs so much exclusive time on the system to install updates?

    Best Free image viewer

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:43 PM PDT

Tried adobe bridge, saw these (big enough) problems:

    • Cannot set default folder/directory (or I dont know how to)
    • Adobe requires sign in and someone said this was so Adobe could spam you with marketing and sell data. Or to make you buy their other apps
      • Login is always a risk that you lose everything if you don't remember your account info, computer explodes, etc)

The first problem is a bigger problem that the 2nd, it's a usability problem.

Decided any of these ways to find images would be good

    A) Searching all letters of image name

    Example:

If (in Dynalist for example) you searched for "rem" .. it would show you all content that contains "rem." One of those pieces of content (a paragraph) would highlight the word "remember."

You said "remember" in one of your paragraphs.

Summary: A program like that can help you find anything if you type a few letters of a word. And these programs allow you to perform more complex searches. -/president_josh

    • Upnote does this
    • Onenote doesnt
    • Maybe other things, know of any others? send me wanna know

    B) Using and searching tags like in Evernote, blogs, etc

    D) Possibly other ways I dunno about

    C) Searching using metadata like the title

    • Edit; Figured out how to use "metadata" search in Bridge. It's a very generic search, and definitely not like #1 - looking for apps that does finding better than this (if there arent any, just gonna have to go with Bridge)
    • Bridge also has tags I maybe... have to figure that out now

This is (re)-ordered by priority. I'm sure not sure which would be best until I test it

When you do in incomplete search, would be nice if app has a live preview of all X (things) like Dynalist (and maybe other things) does

How does suggested app find images?

There are so many free image viewers. No need for Adobe to own this entire app type/category for just good finding and viewing of images. Desktop.

Has anyone used nomacs? It's not being updated anymore

Make Windows 11 Taskbar Look Like Windows 10 - Guide

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:56 PM PDT

Making this simple guide, because without it I was extremely frustrated with the "upgrade" to Windows 11. Performance on Windows 11 is great, it just sucks to have to make UX compromises for the latest updates! The biggest issue was the loss of the title on apps and the taller taskbar which are both fixed here.

    1. Install Windows 11
    2. Install ExplorerPatcher
    3. Open regedit and navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
    4. Add DWord32 entry "TaskbarSi" Value = 2
    5. Edit Value of "TaskbarSmallIcons" = 1

    The Result

Who remembers the Product Red version of Windows Vista?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 03:28 AM PDT

I never got it but I've always wanted it, like it looked really good. One guy gave it away with a Product Red branded mouse (is it official though?).

I wish Microsoft does something special like this again.
