How can I compare Linux vs Windows performance?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:07 AM PDT

I play some games and thanks to steam I'm thinking of migrating full time to linux.

But before that, I'd like to compare it's performance against Windows and see if I will lose much.

Is there a good, fast and easy way to benchmark windows vs linux?

Trying to install linux on a new laptop... black screen

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:50 AM PDT

Hello! I've been trying ALL the day to install linux in this new laptop I have, it's a medion, comes with nvidia. The website is in Spanish but you can understand it easily.

The thing is, after selecting the boot on the grub menu, the screen appears black. And that's it. Nothing more.

First I tried to install manjaro and now I'm trying to install linux mint but, nothing. Same on both.

I tried to do the nomodeset and some more things but without result. I really need to install linux.

just FYI I installed windows first so I could have both, but now I changed ideas and just wanted linux. Windows works perfectly. I doubt it is the thing troubling it.

Sorry for my English, and thanks if you reply. I'm a noob with linux yet.

sudo apt autoremove wants to remove way too many packages.

When I try to install or remove something using terminal, list of packages, which are "automatically installed and no longer needed". Now, this list looks pretty long to me, so I am going to ask:

    1. is it safe for me to remove them?

    Problem with installing

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 05:44 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm having trouble trying to install Kubuntu onto my hard-drive. I'm using a bootable USB to install but when I try to install on my SSD, its not found. I've tried "powercfg -h off" in Windows, but it still doesn't show. Any ideas?

Is there any reason I should keep Windows installed?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 11:14 PM PDT

I'm about to install Manjaro on my new thinpad and was wondering whether there would be any upsides to dual booting with Windows alongside. I don't see myself gaming nor will I be needing any windows specific software.

My only concern would be things like updating the bios and things of those nature. My gut is telling me to just do a clean install. Just wanted to confirm with others if my gut feeling is right. Thanks in advance

Possible ways to make Proton work on Debian Stable?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:59 AM PDT

Is there any way to make the prerequisites for Proton work on Debian Stable?

Let's just forget the fact that I have an AMD Radeon card that doesn't work well with 'amdgpu' driver (It is a Southern Island GCN 1.0 card which amdgpu only has 'experimental support'), I could get the latest kernel and mesa version from the backports, but I don't see LLVM7 in the backports.

This is the lastest version that I could find:

     llvm-6.0/stretch-backports 1:6.0-1~bpo9+1 amd64

I don't know why but I just really love Debian despite the fact that I have horizontal screen tearing occasionally, (probably a driver issue) and I recently had to make a clean install because my x11 gave up on me (I tried the 4.16 kernel for the amdgpu fix for my card, don't know if that was the cause, couldn't figure it out).

My point being, I would like to be able to run games via Proton on Debian than any other distro.

I already have a win10 LTSB dual booted so I'm not desperate, but It'd be great anyhow.

    Completely removing DE's

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 05:29 AM PDT

I have installed xfce4 and Gnome to try them out. I didn't like them so I tried to remove them. I removed them. and their dependencies. But I can still log into them. Logging in is like a trap, because you can't get out. Why won't they disappear?

Can somebody help me install Windows alongside Linux Mint on my laptop?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:55 PM PDT

Hello guys, so I know how to dual boot when Windows is already installed on your laptop and you want to add Linux alongside; that is easy peasy, but what I want to do is the complete opposite. So when I first bought this laptop, I erased Windows completely and installed Linux Mint as my only OS. I just started school and I am going to need Windows to access Visual Studio for some of my classes. Soooo I need Windows back... how can I go about dual booting Windows on my Linux laptop?

Help with a username and password WiFi connection

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:33 PM PDT

I am at a university that has a secure WiFi network, that requires a username and password.

I simply don't know what all the fields in the "add network connection" tool thing. Especially the "domain", "ca certificate", and "anonymous identity".

Here are some pictures of the editor.

I know the SSID, Username, and password. I think it uses PEAP, but TLS is the default on the editor.

I tried to configure it manually via the command line, but all the instructions I followed eventually gave an instruction like "create a certification file..." that I don't know how to do. I'm a big ole noob.

Also, is there any documentation on the GUI out there? I couldn't find any.

    Linux Mint 19, cinnamon.

    External SSD Install

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:28 PM PDT

    Hey all!

I have a 1TB SSD (External USB) and was wondering if it would be possible to have it as my Ubuntu install & hard drive. Would I just make two partitions and use Rufus to create a bootable ISO on one of the partitions?

I would be running this on a Dell Latitude 7280, that has (and needs) Windows 10 installed, and does not have enough RAM to just run a VM.

    Thanks in advance.

Ubuntu/Lubuntu: PC not displaying on my tv

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:11 AM PDT

Hello Friends, I have issues with the display resolution. I have built a pc for a tv in my rumpus room. My PC tends to boot in 1920x1080 resolution however the tv it is connected to doesnt support that resolution, supports i believe 1366x768p, this results in the tv display displaying just blackness...since it cant handle that high of a resolution...

I tried using another tv that does support 1080p and it works perfectly fine and I even tried downgrading the resolution to 768p on that tv... again that works perfectly fine. I saved the 768p settings and I moved the pc back to the rumpus room and BOOM still gives me that black screen... bring the pc back to that 1080p tv and boom again its back to its normal fullhd resolution. Is there anyway I can force a resolution?... it has nvidia display drivers installed but I still use the ubuntu display settings as a way to change them... same thing in Lubuntu... is there any way to cycle through resolutions via a keyboard shortcut.

Please Help me figure out a way to force a damn resolution. Thanks Xx

    [Manjaro] Proton Prerequisites

    Posted: 28 Aug 2018 10:22 PM PDT

I'm having a bitch of a time getting steamplay games to work, and looking at the Proton prerequisites, I find myself in an inadequate position for my Vega64 gpu.

Namely, I need Mesa 18.2 minimum and also LLVM7. Now, Mesa 18.3 is available in the AUR under mesa-git, but LLVM7 is nowhere to be found, only version 6.

I'm half tempted to just install Ubuntu at this point and be done with it, but before I make that rash decision, I thought I'd see if the cooler heads here could prevail and give me some guidance.

    Same DE but different looking?!

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:05 AM PDT

The budgie DE is one my favourites.

But I've seen some big differences with Ubuntu budgie & Solus 3 Budgie or most other Budgie build distros!

Why do they look different even though they are build on same DE.

Are they customized or, different versions of budgie?

Extra: Is it possible to install replica of Solus 3 Budgie DE in other Distros like Ubuntu?

Embedded Dock in Bar (Ubuntu Budgie 18.04LTS)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:01 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I recently installed Ubuntu Budgie 18.04LTS and so far, I'm loving it aside from one configuration want that I can't seem to figure out. This distro comes preconfigured to use Plank as it's applications dock, but I'd rather have the applications dock embedded in the task bar similar to Windows or this screenshot on the budgie-desktop github repo. I can't seem to figure out how to pull off this setup. Please help!

How to make a bootable ISO from my Linux, conserving programs and settings?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:23 AM PDT

    Hello guys

I would like to make an ISO of my Note, keeping the programs and settings (visual customizations, keyboard shortcuts, etc ...) is this possible?

I'm using Lubuntu; The description of the Distro is: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS

I have already tried the procedure for Pinguy Builder [1], but I had problems installing it on the other computer. the login screen appeared but the username and password did not correspond to that of the source computer, (nor other combinations like admin, custom, etc ...)

searching I found Systemback [2], which seems to do everything I need in a simple way, though it is not available for Ubunutu 18 (the latest is only up to 16) ... it seems that they have created a version compatible with Ubunutu 18.04 [ 3], but since it is not from the original distributor I have doubts if it is safe (if you tested this version, is it safe / worth it?) - there is also this comment [4] that I have seen, but since I am a layman I do not know if this script can be harmful to the computer ...

would there be some other alternative that you know and have tested?

I am a new user of Linux, I do not have much technical knowledge yet, so I am avoiding options that are operated only by the terminal (but if this is the best option, would there be any 'tutorial' or something?)

thank you for your attention in advance

AMD or NVIDIA: I have a 4k display and Wayland and Xorg kinda suck on NVIDIA, is it worth switching?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:18 AM PDT

Howdy. I need to use a distro for school, I usually just run macOS on my desktop as a hackintosh, but some of the tools we require are linux only and the conditions for running macOS include disabling all hardware virtualisation....

    Anywhooo..................................................

xorg and nvidia give me constant screen tearing and choppiness on most distros. The smoothest ive had is fedora 28 with gnome and xubuntu, it just becomes a bit... shitty... to use if everything chops around.

So tldr: Is it a better option to grab an AMD card? I wouldnt be loosing money with buy/sell pages and what not assuming we move to a similar card.

After rebooting my laptop I was greeted by 'Minimal BASH-like line editing'. I tried googling this issue and trying to resolve it by myself but I couldn't do it. Please help
