Suggestions for switching to linux Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:27 AM PDT I have been researching linux for around 2-3 years now and have always wanted to switch but never found the right timing. I did try linux (kde neon) for half a year on my secondary laptop but the user interface and multi-gesture support (libinput and fusuma) was really annoying (not 1 to 1). What's worse was that it did not install my nvidia drivers and I went through many online resources for downloading the drivers but it wouldn't work at all (purge old driver and reinstall, reboot etc.). In the end, I ended up reinstalling windows back on it. Now that gnome 40 supports 1 to 1 multi-gestures, I was thinking of trying the swap again on my main laptop. I tried pop-os and ubuntu (live usb) but they don't enable wayland for nvidia gpu so I can't use the 1 to 1 gestures. With the new driver release by nvidia, will I be able to use 1 to 1 gestures with my config? Which distro should I go for that will be updated to this latest driver or have it available (currently thinking fedora or manjaro gnome)? Or is it still not ready yet and I should wait for some more months for it to be available and stable? No linux distro can find my specific wlan Router. Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:33 PM PDT So im completely new to linux and recently i tried out elementary os via a usb stick. It Booted and worked well. But it couldnt find my wlan router. The routers of my neighbours where displayed but not mine. Then i tried it with ubuntu. Also with the demo via a usb stick. But also Ubuntu cant find my router. Sorry if this is a stupid question. If you need more information let me know. [link] [comments] |
Does software made for Ubuntu work on Ubuntu-based distros? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:40 PM PDT Hi! I want to install the Glasgow Haskell Compiler on my pc. The site lets you choose between a few distros. What happens if i install the Ubuntu one? It should work if I use a Ubuntu-based distro like Pop!_OS right? Or even the Debian one, since Ubuntu is based on Debian, and Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu? Is that correct? [link] [comments] |

Can I have BitLocker encrypted Windows and whatever Linux, also encrypted, on the same drive? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:08 PM PDT Can I have BitLocker encrypted Windows and whatever encryption Debian or Debian based distro? They'd be both installed on the same drive. I don't know how this encryption will co-work, if I can have Debian encrypt whole disk, or Windows, whichever is faster in use, I don't mind long first run. Bulletproof safety, unlocked by password is the only thing I want in this department. If all distros are similar, I don't care if it's Debian, I'm still noob that knows basic commands to add repos, install apps, update etc. Quite frankly I'm open to learning Arch or something Arch based. If someone's were to recommend me a distro, the only requirement is normal Linux look and feel. I don't like them Window-ish, or even worse MacOS alike. Well, nice installer would be nice, I like to shrink Windows partition and then in Linux installer just click "fill remaining space". Or even better if I wouldn't have to do it but I'm not sure if Linux will figure out how to do it the best way, not just install on NTFS partitition. That's just a guess, or maybe very old experience, I don't intend to diss Linux but let's face it, last time I tried it, I got one and only one conclusion - if it's not Ubuntu, it's made by geeks for geeks, who know how to allocate all these weird partitions. I also love, maybe above everything else, installer which will offer to install bloatware rich variant, or bare bones with blob drivers. I want the latter. Many thanks in advance! Don't hate me for what may seem ignorance. It's just raw honesty after trying to switch a couple times. [link] [comments] |
(Noob) Dual-booting, partitions made in Windows 10 not visible in Pop!_OS Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:01 PM PDT Hi all, I'm trying to dual-boot Windows 10 and Pop!_OS. I created a partition for both Windows and Pop!_OS, however when I boot into the USB drive that has Pop!_OS and try to select the partition I created, there isn't one to select. I've attached pictures of my issues, so hopefully that will help. Thanks a bunch! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:39 PM PDT Hey, I just got my new ThinkPad e14. I love it a huge upgrade from my surface pro5. So I decided to install Linux mint and duel boot it. I've noticed sum lack in support for my laptop. For example, when I close the lid it suspends, the screen will not turn back on when I try to wake it up. I tried alt-ctrl-f1 and f8. I'm forced to reboot and get in like that. Also the brightness control does not work. Also when I login for a reboot I get a message that said I need a display driver, but it said I'm up to date. I don't know if there is a way fix this or not. [link] [comments] |

How to set up a window manager? Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:55 PM PDT I'm trying to set up spectrwm. But I didn't find full process for setting up network, bluetooth, polkit agent, etc for any window manager only the customisation part is available. So what application do I need to set up a window manager, like, how to setup wifi (via a terminal , I tried to use nmcli but it didn't work) . How do I do this from status bar like any desktop environment. Also,I have kde plasma installed so I don't know but spetrwm ram usage is around 1.02 gb is it because of kde. What should I do? Edi: I'm using Manjaro 21.16 on a hp envy x360 laptop. [link] [comments] |

503 Service Unavailable Apache2/Wordpress Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:43 PM PDT Hi all i host a few websites on Ubuntu 16.04.7 and apache version Apache/2.4.46, some static sites, some wordpress, all of them work fine except 1 site, its no longer working and shows 503 service unavailable. There are no errors in the apache access or error log, i enabled WP debug on the website and it shows no errors or will even write to debug.log file for wordpress - anyone have a clue what i can do to troubleshoot this? I tried some wordpress specific things like renaming the plugin folder, resetting to a wordpress default theme, making sure the database username/password are correct. Pulling my hair out! How do I install the Fedora LXQt operating system on another PC? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:20 PM PDT So, I'm familiar with installing the Windows 10 operating system. You just save the Windows 10 installer on a USB stick, plug the USB stick into the new PC, boot from that USB stick, and then just let the Windows 10 installer run. I'm guessing the process isn't that simple for Linux/Fedora, so I've tried looking around on the web for guides on how to install the operating system, but I haven't found anything that explains the process clearly. So I'm asking here. How do I install the Fedora LXQt operating system on another PC? The PC in question is a 2-in-1 Tablet that already has Windows 10 installed on it. My plan was to use a 32Gb micro SD card as the boot installer, that way I can use the Tablet's micro SD slot instead of using the USB port on the Tablet. [link] [comments] |
Terrible video performance on Arch/KDE Plasma/NVIDIA 2070 Super Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:13 PM PDT The other day I officially formatted Windows and made the switch to Arch with KDE Plasma. I have been running Arch with AwesomeWM for about a year now on a dev box, so Arch is nothing new to me. Here is what I am trying to troubleshoot: window animations in Plasma (like pinning to the side), games like minecraft, and others like the not-so-demanding Black Mesa on Steam are unplayable. YouTube runs fine, but stutters when I open another app, like the terminal. Something is off and I'm sure I can fix it. These all run fine on my AMD based APU dev box and this one is beefier. Same hardware as when I ran Windows and I play Doom Eternal and Death Stranding on Steam. I am running: Intel i9820X 10-core 4.29Mhz 64GB RAM NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super 970 Evo Plus M.2 2GB I have verified that the PCI card is using the nvidia driver in lspci -v and also it's the latest version (470, I believe). What am I missing? [link] [comments] |
How do I begin to troubleshoot problem playing videos? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:42 AM PDT I'm having problems playing videos from a NAS. Most video play fine until they don't, it seems a bit random. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:30 AM PDT Similar to the this script which turns CentOS into Alma Linux, is there a script which turns Ubuntu into Linux Mint? Please help, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Linux equivalent of Windows logout and login? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:11 AM PDT I am hoping for an answer that works universal for all flavours of Linux and DEs. As well know when a computer is behaving badly you turn it off and on again but sometimes you dont want to reboot. Maybe that is because of some BIOs thing or maybe you have a root level process you dont want to restart. On windows there is the intermediate step of logging out and logging back in (not "switch user") and this will restart all of that users processes What is the Linux equivalent. I have found that just exiting a Linux DE doesn't stop all processes owned/started by that user. [link] [comments] |

Should I give up arch based distros Posted: 28 Oct 2021 09:15 PM PDT I'm completely new at Linux and wanted to install archcraft since it looked good, but when I try to boot with the usb it just restarts my laptop. Then I tried endeavor, which booted successfully but it doesn't connect to my Ethernet or see any wifi. I saw that I have to do something in terminal but for some reason I can't even type in the terminal. The problem is I can't even find others with similar problem, so I'm wondering should I just not use arch. [link] [comments] |
MusicBee on Linux - No Drag&Drop feature? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 09:58 AM PDT I've installed MusicBee through this guide And everything works pretty fine. But I lack one quite useful feature. I can create folders through MusicBee, but I can't drop files into it. Is there some fix to this? [link] [comments] |
my home internet was shut off. Posted: 28 Oct 2021 11:12 PM PDT my home internet was shut off and i'm having a tough time. i've tried to use my mobile internet on the desktop but cannot do wifi or usb tethering due to carrier restrictions. i think i can download updates/programs with the phone, then transfer and install on desktop. the process is a bit daunting. appimages are no problem. smartphones are new to me, i got my first one in january 2020. i do not have permission to change anything on the account. the phone is not rooted. i attach a usb cable from phone to computer to transfer files. it doesn't always connect. i'm not sure why. I search for answers and get lost in the man pages or i'll try learning from an adb shell but that's like another language. i started using linux july 2020. a brief rundown of my equipment, it's pretty dated. desktop: motherboard m5a99fx; CPU Phenom x4 970; 32gb ram; 2tb mix of hdd and ssd; 5.14 manjaro kde on an ssd with bios//mbr mobile: samsung android galaxy a10e on a verizon family plan with 'unlimited' mobile data but i cannot create hotspots nor tether usb, the option is greyed out. connecting the phone and desktop locally with wifi for file transfers would be useful but there's something i'm not understanding. my desktop and phone connect to the wifi but i don't know what to do from there. searching online only gives results for connecting to the internet, not transferring through a local connection without internet. hoping someone might be able to point me to a guide that could help make my life easier. or perhaps suggest something i haven't thought of or don't know about. i've tried playing with adb, termux, an ftp server, scrcpy and other things but networking messes me up, as if i have number dyslexia. i don't care about videogames, tv or movies. i'm just trying to update, learn and most importantly, find a job. thanks for reading, any suggestion is welcome but bear in mind I already have 100's of generic bookmarks for learning Linux/programming/etc and also, spending money is not an option. PLEASE HELP!!! RANDOM REBOOTS! Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:42 AM PDT Yesterday my PC just reboot without a reason and didn't boot back. Today it happened to me 5 times every 3 minutes! If it helps: - Yesterday I started to mine crypto with my GPU, - Yesterday I installed GLava - OpenGL video visualizer, - Today while it crashed 5 times (maybe also yesterday) I was playing Minecraft (Lunar 1.8) - I have cats that sometimes bite cables of my PC but they are looking good. Where are the logs for that kind of stuff? [link] [comments] |
